PREFACE

Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)

20 Woe to those who call evil good

and good evil,

who put darkness for light

and light for darkness,

who put bitter for sweet

and sweet for bitter.

Matthew 5:29-30 (NIV)

29 If your right eye causes you to

stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is

better for you to lose one part of your body

than for your whole body to be thrown into

hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to

stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better

for you to lose one part of your body than for

your whole body to go into hell.

Romans 12:21 (NIV)

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome

evil with good.

CHAPTER 1

Revelation 14:10-11 (NIV)

10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s

fury, which has been poured full strength into

the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented

with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy

angels and of the Lamb.11 And the smoke of

their torment will rise for ever and ever. There

will be no rest day or night for those who

worship the beast and its image, or for anyone

who receives the mark of its name.”

2 Thessalonians 1:9 (NIV)

9 They will be punished with everlasting

destruction and shut out from the presence of

the Lord and from the glory of his might

Revelation 21:8 (NIV)

8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile,

the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who

practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—

they will be consigned to the fiery lake of

burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Matthew 25:41 (NIV)

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart

from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal

fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

Mark 9:47-48 (NIV)

47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck

it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom

of God with one eye than to have two eyes and

be thrown into hell, 48 where “‘the worms that

eat them do not die, and the fire is not

quenched.’

Revelation 20:10 (NIV)

10 And the devil, who deceived them, was

thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where

the beast and the false prophet had been

thrown. They will be tormented day and night

for ever and ever.

Matthew 13:41-42 (NIV)

41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and

they will weed out of his kingdom everything

that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will

throw them into the blazing furnace, where

there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 3:12 (NIV)

12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will

clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat

into the barn and burning up the chaff with

unquenchable fire.”

Daniel 12:2 (NIV)

2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth

will awake: some to everlasting life, others to

shame and everlasting contempt.

Luke 16:23-24 (NIV)

23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he

looked up and saw Abraham far away, with

Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him,

‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send

Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and

cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this

fire.’

1 Corinthians 2:14 (NIV)

14 The person without the Spirit does not

accept the things that come from the Spirit of

God but considers them foolishness, and cannot

understand them because they are discerned

only through the Spirit.

1 John 1:8 (NIV)

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive

ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Romans 12:9 (NIV)

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling

to what is good.

Chapter 2

John 5:5-9 (NIV)

5 One who was there had been an invalid for

thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying

there and learned that he had been in this

condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do

you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid

replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool

when the water is stirred. While I am trying to

get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your

mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured;

he picked up his mat and walked.

Hebrews 12:1 (NIV)

12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such

a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off

everything that hinders and the sin that so

easily entangles. And let us run with

perseverance the race marked out for us,

Matthew 19:16-22 (NIV)

16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked,

“Teacher, what good thing must I do to get

eternal life?”

17 “Why do you ask me about what is

good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is

good. If you want to enter life, keep the

commandments.”

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall

not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you

shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your

father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as

yourself.’”

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said.

“What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be

perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the

poor, and you will have treasure in

heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went

away sad, because he had great wealth.

1 Corinthians 13:12 (NIV)

12 For now we see only a reflection as in a

mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I

know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I

am fully known.

Chapter 3

Matthew 6:20 (NIV)

20 But store up for yourselves treasures in

heaven, where moths and vermin do not

destroy, and where thieves do not break in and

steal.

Luke 23:43 (NIV)

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today

you will be with me in paradise.”

John 14:2 (NIV)

2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that

were not so, would I have told you that I am

going there to prepare a place for you?

1 Corinthians 2:9 (NIV)

9 However, as it is written: “What no eye has

seen, what no ear has heard, and what no

human mind has conceived”—the things God

has prepared for those who love him.

Hebrews 11:16 (NIV)

16 Instead, they were longing for a better

country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not

ashamed to be called their God, for he has

prepared a city for them.

Revelation 21:1 (NIV)

21 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new

earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth

had passed away, and there was no longer any

sea.

Revelation 21:4 (NIV)

4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There

will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or

pain, for the old order of things has passed

away.”

Revelation 22:1-5 (NIV)

22 Then the angel showed me the river of the

water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from

the throne of God and of the Lamb2 down the

middle of the great street of the city. On each

side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing

twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every

month. And the leaves of the tree are for the

healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be

any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb

will be in the city, and his servants will serve

him.4 They will see his face, and his name will

be on their foreheads.5 There will be no more

night. They will not need the light of a lamp or

the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give

them light. And they will reign for ever and

ever.

Revelation 21:15-27 (NIV)

15 The angel who talked with me had a

measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its

gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like

a square, as long as it was wide. He measured

the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000

stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is

long. 17 The angel measured the wall using

human measurement, and it was 144

cubits thick. 18 The wall was made of

jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as

glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were

decorated with every kind of precious

stone. The first foundation was jasper, the

second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth

emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the

seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth

topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth,

and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve

gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a

single pearl. The great street of the city was of

gold, as pure as transparent glass.

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because

the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its

temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or

the moon to shine on it, for the glory of

God gives it light, and the Lamb is its

lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and

the kings of the earth will bring their splendor

into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be

shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The

glory and honor of the nations will be brought

into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor

will anyone who does what is shameful or

deceitful, but only those whose names are

written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Genesis 12:1 (NIV)

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your

country, your people and your father’s

household to the land I will show you.

Luke 15: 1-7 (NIV)

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all

gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the

Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,

“This man welcomes sinners and eats with

them.”

3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose

one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one

of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the

open country and go after the lost sheep until

he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully

puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then

he calls his friends and neighbors together and

says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost

sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there

will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner

who repents than over ninety-nine righteous

persons who do not need to repent.

Matthew 25:1-13 (NIV)

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be

like ten virgins who took their lamps and went

out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them

were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish

ones took their lamps but did not take any oil

with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil

in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom

was a long time in coming, and they all became

drowsy and fell asleep.

6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the

bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed

their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise,

‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going

out.’

9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough

for both us and you. Instead, go to those who

sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the

oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who

were ready went in with him to the wedding

banquet. And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’

they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know

you.’

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not

know the day or the hour.

Philippians 3:20-21 (NIV)

20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we

eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord

Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables

him to bring everything under his control, will

transform our lowly bodies so that they will be

like his glorious body.

Chapter 4

Mark 3:28-29 (NIV)

28 Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all

their sins and every slander they utter, 29 but

whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will

never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal

sin.”

Hebrews 10:26-29 (NIV)

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we

have received the knowledge of the truth, no

sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful

expectation of judgment and of raging fire that

will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone

who rejected the law of Moses died without

mercy on the testimony of two or three

witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you

think someone deserves to be punished who

has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who

has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the

covenant that sanctified them, and who has

insulted the Spirit of grace?

Isaiah 5:20 (NIV)

20 Woe to those who call evil good

and good evil, who put darkness for light

and light for darkness, who put bitter for

sweet and sweet for bitter.

Acts 8:3 (NIV)

3 But Saul began to destroy the church. Going

from house to house, he dragged off both men

and women and put them in prison.

Acts 9:1 (NIV)

9 Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out

murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples.

1 Corinthians 15:9 (NIV)

9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not

even deserve to be called an apostle, because I

persecuted the church of God.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no

longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now

live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God,

who loved me and gave himself for me.

Luke 9:62 (NIV)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to

the plow and looks back is fit for service in the

kingdom of God.”

1 John 1:8-10 (NIV)

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive

ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we

confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will

forgive us our sins and purify us from all

unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not

sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his

word is not in us.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

8 For it is by grace you have been

saved, through faith—and this is not from

yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by

works, so that no one can boast.

Matthew 5:11-12 (NIV)

11 “Blessed are you when people insult

you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of

evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and

be glad, because great is your reward in heaven,

for in the same way they persecuted the

prophets who were before you.

Jude 3-4 (NIV)

3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to

write to you about the salvation we share, I felt

compelled to write and urge you to contend for

the faith that was once for all entrusted to

God’s holy people. 4 For certain individuals

whose condemnation was written about long

ago have secretly slipped in among you. They

are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of

our God into a license for immorality and deny

Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Romans 13:11 (NIV)

The hour has already come for you to wake up

from your slumber, because our salvation is

Matthew 16:15 (NIV)

you say I am?”

John 11:26 (NIV)

Chapter 6

Genesis 2:9 (NIV)

9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out

of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the

eye and good for food. In the middle of the

garden were the tree of life and the tree of the

knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 3:24 (NIV)

24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the

east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a

flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard

the way to the tree of life.

Revelation 2:7 (NIV)

7 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the

Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is

victorious, I will give the right to eat from the

tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

Psalm 14:1 (NIV)

1 The fool says in his heart,

“There is no God.”

They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;

there is no one who does good.

John 3:16 (NIV)

nations, baptizing them in the name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything

I have commanded you. And surely I am with

you always, to the very end of the age.”

Luke 12:16-21 (NIV)

16 And he told them this parable: “The ground

of a certain rich man yielded an abundant

harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I

do? I have no place to store my crops.’

18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear

down my barns and build bigger ones, and

there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll

say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up

for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be

merry.”’

20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very

night your life will be demanded from you. Then

who will get what you have prepared for

yourself?’

21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up

things for themselves but is not rich toward

God.”

Proverbs 26:11 (NIV)

11 As a dog returns to its vomit,

so fools repeat their folly.

1 Timothy 6:10 (NIV)

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of

evil. Some people, eager for money, have

wandered from the faith and pierced

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV)

1 Peter 3:3-4 (NIV)

Chapter 9

John 5:28-29 (HCSB)

28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is

coming when all who are in the graves will hear

His voice 29 and come out—those who have

done good things, to the resurrection of life, but

those who have done wicked things, to the

resurrection of judgment.

Luke 16:19-31 (NIV)

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in

purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every

day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named

Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to

eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the

dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and

the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The

rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades,

where he was in torment, he looked up and saw

Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his

side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father

Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to

dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my

tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that

in your lifetime you received your good things,

while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is

comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And

besides all this, between us and you a great

chasm has been set in place, so that those who

want to go from here to you cannot, nor can

anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send

Lazarus to my family,28 for I have five brothers.

Let him warn them, so that they will not also

come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the

Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if

someone from the dead goes to them, they will

repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to

Moses and the Prophets, they will not be

dead.’”

John 3:19-21 (NIV)

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the

world, but people loved darkness instead of

light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone

who does evil hates the light, and will not come

into the light for fear that their deeds will be

exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth

comes into the light, so that it may be seen

plainly that what they have done has been done

in the sight of God.

Matthew 18:3 (NIV)

3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you

change and become like little children, you will

never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Mark 10:15 (NIV)

15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive

the kingdom of God like a little child will never

enter it.”

Romans 8:29-30 (NIV)

29 For those God foreknew he also

predestined to be conformed to the image of

his Son, that he might be the firstborn among

many brothers and sisters. 30 And those he

predestined, he also called; those he called, he

also justified; those he justified, he also

glorified.

John 15:16 (NIV)

16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and

appointed you so that you might go and bear

fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever

you ask in my name the Father will give you.

Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)

Revelation 2:4-5 (NIV)

4 Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken

Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy,

it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not

dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not

easily angered, it keeps no record of

wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but

rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects,

always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8 Love never fails

Matthew 22:36-39 (NIV)

commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with

all your heart and with all your soul and with all

commandment. 39 And the second is like it:

‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Chapter 11

John 6:26-27 (NIV)

26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you

are looking for me, not because you saw the

signs I performed but because you ate the

loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for

food that spoils, but for food that endures to

Exodus 20:3-6 (NIV)

3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in

the form of anything in heaven above or on the

earth beneath or in the waters below.5 You

shall not bow down to them or worship them;

for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous

God, punishing the children for the sin of the

parents to the third and fourth generation of

those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a

thousand generations of those who love me

and keep my commandments.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57 (NIV)

54 When the perishable has been clothed with

the imperishable, and the mortal with

immortality, then the saying that is written will

come true: “Death has been swallowed up in

victory.”

55 “Where, O death, is your victory?

Where, O death, is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of

sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives

us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:21 (NIV)

21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

Luke 18:19 (NIV)

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus

more will your Father in heaven give the Holy

Spirit to those who ask him!”

John 14:14 (NIV)

14 You may ask me for anything in my name,

and I will do it.

Psalm 51:7 (NIV)

7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;

wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Matthew 18:8-9 (NIV)

8 If your hand or your foot causes you to

stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better

for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to

have two hands or two feet and be thrown into

eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to

stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is

better for you to enter life with one eye than to

do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do

what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is

good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do

it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that

good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my

sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is

good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not

do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not

want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do

what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who

do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

Romans 7:24-25 (NIV)

24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue

me from this body that is subject to

death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me

through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s

law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of

sin.

Hebrews 3:13 (NIV)

13 But encourage one another daily, as long as

it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be

hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Romans 10:13 (NIV)

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the

Lord will be saved.”

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV)

contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being

transformed into his image with ever-increasing

glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the

Spirit.

Galatians 2:20 (NIV)

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no

live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of

God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)

James 1:2-4 (NIV)

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,

whenever you face trials of many

kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of

your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let

perseverance finish its work so that you may be

mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Spirit.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV)

thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will

for you in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 10:34 (NIV)

Luke 10:33 (NIV)

33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where

the man was; and when he saw him, he took

pity on him.

1 Peter 3:18-20 (NIV)

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the

righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to

God. He was put to death in the body but made

alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he

went and made proclamation to the imprisoned

spirits— 20 to those who were disobedient long

ago when God waited patiently in the days of

Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a

few people, eight in all, were saved through

water,

Ephesians 4:8-10 (NIV)

8 This is why it says:

“When he ascended on high,

he took many captives

and gave gifts to his people.”

9 (What does “he ascended” mean except that

he also descended to the lower, earthly

regions? 10 He who descended is the very one

who ascended higher than all the heavens, in

order to fill the whole universe.)

Screwtape Proposes a Toast Study Guide A Bible Study on the C.S. Lewis Essay Screwtape Proposes a Toast

By Alan Vermilye

Only the imaginative mind of C.S. Lewis could create a short story about a demon

offering the after-dinner speech at the graduation ceremony at the Tempters’ Training

College for young demons.

Nearly two decades after the release of The Screwtape Letters and to the delight of his

fans, Lewis wrote a sequel that he never intended to create. In fact, he never imagined

the original book would become a classic and that his readers would continue to enjoy

it so many years later.

Screwtape Proposes a Toast Study Guide digs deep into this classic and provides a Bible

study for individual use or small groups. This flexible study can be used in one long

setting or divided up over several sessions.
