The great thing about Hinekaha is the fact that we get to express both the creative and technical sides of our brains. We use S.M.L to get both left and right sides of our brain up and running by doing – poems, defining the meanings of new words, adding new words to our vocabulary, problem solving, expressing our passion for what we love, all while completing our main subjects Math, Reading & Writing.

ReadingReading isn’t all about reading a bunch of words in paragraphs, it is also about discovering a variety of

meanings and new words to use in our stories we write, to read between the lines, discover the morals or meanings, to

find the main message in stories, and to create a clear image in our head of what has and is going on. Reading is a main subject of our daily routine and with S.M.L you have to challenge your self to complete a different variety of tasks. The students find S.M.L less boring because you don’t have the teacher ordering instructions, it allows you to lead and manage yourself to become an independent learner for the

future.

Maths

Maths is a very important subject hence why we do quite an amount. Recently we have been learning about fractions such as – proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed fractions, and how to add and subtract fractions. We have used our knowledge of fractions to transform the fractions into decimals. E.g. 1 20/100 = 1.2. We really focus on Math’s because it is a really important subject for in the future. We have a new WALT ( We Are Learning To) every week to relate to the work in the task boxes for SML.  Our teacher ( Whaea Billie ) also has time for one-to-one time with any of us who need help . We also get to mark our own work so that helps us manage our selves and take control in right and wrong answers. We use the computers a lot during math.

WritingWhen learning to write we get taught the importance of the 5 W’s: who, what, when, where, why. We also learn to add specific language and information to stories or reports depending on the subject. We found that it is best to be original and very creative when it comes to narrative writing and to do that we add metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia and personification to our writing. We learn a lot of our writing during our reading time as the text we read are generally used to help us write using a particular genre.

This is where all of the tasks are kept and what we use to keep track of what has and hasn’t been completed. This is a good way of learning as you don’t have to get Math, you can get Writing or Reading first to focus on. But we occasionally have class lessons on a task like Math #1 etc. S.M.L is a great way to manage our selves and our time and so we get to be creative in our own way. S.M.L is our daily routine and is a good way to get things done, especially if we have relievers.
