T his issue . . .It’s been a lovely Easter in Eumundi with crisp blue days, busy markets and most locals choosing to stay home over the holidays this year and enjoy this perfect spot of Coast. Every school holiday’s I break up the long, long days with a walk and a play in a park and I’m always disappointed that our Dick Caplick Park remains unchanged. It’s without a doubt the busiest playground on the Coast on market days (or after school) but it is way too small and if you’re over six there’s nothing there for you – BYO ball. I know it’s on the ‘agenda’, but I wish it was a priority. People travel a long way for a good park!
Fiona’s Fancies is back in Eumundi – sort of. Lots of people are staying home this Easter. If the Sunshine Coast airport can’t upgrade it will close down. The Eumundi SS spellathon raised $21,925 which will be used to for a cooling system in the hall.

Business
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTTHE CREATIVE FROG Heidi Jenkins
Q. What and where is your business?
The Creative Frog is a graphic design company based in Verrierdale, which provides intelligent design, coupled with a quality customer service. I often get asked about my business name. One of my favourite childhood memories was running around the garden catching frogs – and I then played a frog in L’enfant et les sortilèges at The Royal Opera House in London (something I’m incredibly proud of!). It’s great to be able to combine wonderful memories with my adult passion.
How long have you been in business in Eumundi?
The Creative Frog was launched in 2013 and since then we’ve been steadily growing.
What made you choose this region to base your business?
We moved to the area in 2011 to get away from the city and enjoy the beautiful Sunshine Coast countryside. Eumundi is a great creative hub, full of vibrant, warm and friendly people – why wouldn’t you set up a business here? I love it.
What is the best thing about working here?
That’s a hard question - there are so many great things ... If I had to pick I would say having the opportunity to work with some amazing people and to help them bring their dreams to life.
What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here?
Is there anything? I have a great outlook from my offi ce, I have often seen our resident wallaby hopping by, we have a great community, the internet speed is better than we had in Brisbane. No, sorry I can’t fi nd a downside.
What would you like to see change in our business district?
I think overall we all support each other pretty well, and promote local business, but we can always do more.

NO HO-HUM AT HUMDRUM
NEW CHEF FOR ALFRESCO’S
When Eumundi siblings Keisha and Jack McMullen (pictured) were approached by the Clandestino coffee guys Jaxon and Ryan (from Belmondos in Noosaville), about opening a new café together in the recently vacated butcher shop on Eumundi’s Memorial Dr, they jumped at the opportunity. Along with good coffee, Humdrum Cafe also stocks Fiona’s Fancies (banana bread!), Vanilla food, plus Tanglewood pastries and breads. Jack and Keisha plan to open seven days and have called on their lovely Mum Pam as back up. Jack is keen to also keep the coffee cart Bean Shot in the Park running as well. “We don’t want to lose the spot because it gets lots of business from people ordering a coffee while they fi ll up at the servo,” Keisha explained.
Cook Matt Butler has recently joined sister’s Cass and Shelley in the Alfresco’s Garden Café kitchen. Previously Matt was working at Bohemian Bungalow and he’s come on board for the fab Friday and Saturday nights of pizza and jazz.

RDA RIDING HIGH Leo Wiles
Respect, fresh air, exercise and horses are the perfect recipe for happy, confi dent people with core body strength, according to Riding for the Disabled’s Vice President Julie Templeton. No matter if you are able bodied or have an intellectual or physical disability, you’re welcome at the Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA) Centre of Excellence with its safe, fun and encouraging therapeutic and recreational private and group riding programs. The not-for-profi t group, located on 24 acres of old farmland in North Arm, began life 35 years ago when Palmwoods RDA amalgamated their horses and resources with President Matty Sormani’s group in Doonan to become the fi nely oiled machine it is today.
The modest facilities with its picturesque rural backdrop cater for around 100 clientele. “We provide instant legs to those challenged by muscular or skeletal disabilities,” Julie explained. “There is something wonderful about a person who is normally confi ned to a wheelchair suddenly looking down on the world from 17 hands,” she shared.
“For some of our riders they’re moving under their own steam for the very fi rst time in their lives
and that in itself… well it’s empowering!”
Julie’s countless hours and determination as an RDA coach and mentor for over ten years were recognised recently when she was awarded the Sports and Recreation Australia Day Award for 2015. But Julie shied away from the accolade, instead billing herself as a beef cattle farmer with a small crop of ginger who uses all her spare time to be around horses.
Amidst the bobcats building the eagerly anticipated shade roof to ensure an all seasons service, there is an air of camaraderie between the volunteers of all ages, spritely going about their business. While the majority want to give back to their community or have a personal link with disability, including former RDA students who come back to pitch in, there’s also those openly seeking a horse fi x. The horses and volunteers are only matched in their enthusiasm for the day ahead by the youngsters who arrived eager to be in the saddle. “It’s only Liam’s second lesson and for the past fortnight he’s spoken about nothing else,” beamed Liam’s proud father.
Eumundi’s local lad Wilby couldn’t stop grinning either as he prepared for his session while Tiff, mother to Sam, 8, and Jasper, 10, was full of praise for the organisation that sees students come from far afi eld.
“Riding develops abilities,” enthused Julie explaining there are many physical health benefi ts of riding a horse such as; improved co-ordination, balance, muscle power and tone while lessons also allow for relaxation, socialisation, decision-making, fresh air and at the heart of it increased self-esteem and fun.
Such dedication comes at a cost with long waiting lists and a heavy reliance on local businesses, grants and the
efforts of 80 volunteers who donate around three hours a week each. Julie explained the rewards of volunteering are immeasurable. “I myself used to feel guilty about how much pleasure I got out of it – it’s terribly addictive.” Julie’s own RDA journey began with the birth of her niece Chelsea, who was born with no fi ngers and half a foot. “My husband Rick and I didn’t have children so we taught all our nieces and nephews to ride. Chelsea was no different, we stuck her on a horse at four. Fortunately I heard Matty was starting up a disabled riding school so I went along,” she said.
Julie explained that the freedom of being on a horse and having control of the reins improves a child’s self-esteem and independence. “I’ve never been one for leading kids around on ponies - if they’re safe and capable of steering we let them go.”
Riding program or volunteer enquiries welcome. After school able-bodied children’s lessons are also available. [email protected] or 5472 7280.

The Eumundi School of Arts hall reached its centenary in 2012. After serving our community for over a hundred years, a recent building condition audit identifi ed the need for restumping works. The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA), which is trustee for the hall,
has been awarded an Everyone’s Environment Heritage grant from the State Govt. for $13,500 towards the total cost of $27,700. Restumping has commenced with minimum disruption and with new legs this much loved icon can be enjoyed for many years to come.

Arts in Eumundi
The Foundation for Culture and Arts in Eumundi held a public meeting recently, which I was happy to attend. The meeting highlighted the community’s vision as a place of signifi cance for sculpture and other artistic endeavours. I’m personally all for this idea as it complements our iconic markets and these sculptures will provide a 365, 24/7 attraction for the town. Let’s keep building on that great vibe this town exudes!
Exciting times for butter factory
I recently met with the new owners of the old butter factory garage site at the northern bookend of town (at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Caplick Way). Whilst I’m not in a position to divulge their aspirations for the site, I can tell you that exciting things have certainly been mooted! I believe their proposal will be exceedingly exciting for Eumundi and will add signifi cantly to the business and artistic value of this town. Stay tuned!
Bus shelter update
In my last column I mentioned a shelter on Eumundi Range Road. I didn’t receive
much feedback, however the feedback I did receive questioned the location and function of the shelter as most were perplexed as to its location. The shelter in question was poorly located, rarely if ever used and was in a derelict, unloved state. As such, I have decided to remove it. I did look at alternatives, such as establishing it in other locations, however due to fl ooding constraints and anticipated low usage I have decided not to proceed that way. Just to clarify, I’m not referring to the recently refurbished shelter at the lookout – that one is defi nitely staying where it is!
Easter time
I hope everyone had a happy and safe Easter – and I hope the bunny was good to you! To me, Easter is a time when I remember helping the Easter Bunny place the eggs at the top of our family’s special tree, an old English Elm, some 20 metres high. I always value Easter as a good family event that reinforces Christian values. Whether you’re a practicing Christian or not, it’s a good reminder of what’s important in life – and I think family is at the top of that list for most people.

ROTARY PRESENTS KATIE ROSE WITH CHEQUEKevin Pickford, Eumundi Rotary Club
Eumundi Rotary Club presented a cheque for $20,800 to the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice on 2 April at Katie Rose Hospice in Doonan. The net proceeds from the Eumundi Ochre Summer-All-Over Long Lunch held recently, were substantially higher than in previous years. What a credit to sponsors and volunteers and especially, of course, to the chefs and lunch attendees
for supporting the event. The presentation was preceded by a big thank you from Rotary’s Bob Ward. Co-Chairs of the Rotary Club organising committee, Tania Broadbent and Bronwyn Innes, presented the cheque to Bev Barton Hospice Board Director and Gary Cox, Katie Rose Hospice manager. Bev reaffi rmed what a wonderful contribution this event makes to the Hospice as it receives no government funding.

EUMUNDI’S CENTENARY ANZAC DAYWendy Birrell
Each year the Eumundi community commemorates Anzac Day with a walk up Memorial Dr past the Memorial Trees. Beginning at Caplick Park at 7.45am, the Noosa & District Pipe Band leads what has grown to be a rather large procession of ex-military jeeps, light horsemen, returned servicemen and women, the RSL , community groups and schoolchildren. This is a moving occasion for many where poignant songs are sung and the old church bell at Discover Eumundi tolls 20 times for the Eumundi men who did not return from WW1 and for the seven men of WW2. Wreaths are
laid, speeches given, flags are raised and those who have given service in conflicts throughout the world are remembered.
Originally called Main Street, it was changed in 1977 Memorial Drive as a fitting tribute. The Memorial Trees were planted from 1914 to 1919 and each was originally protected in a white picket fence. Over the almost 100 years some trees were replaced and most outgrew their fences, but the Gridley memorial flame tree near the post office still has a picket fence.

CENTENARY OF ANZAC IN VERRIERDALE Ed Boyd
As part of the Centenary of ANZAC, the Verrierdale Community Group (VCG) has recently upgraded its ANZAC memorial site. An extension was needed to allow the names of local men who enlisted in 1914-18 to be added as part of the Centenary remembrance. Rather than going for an expensive upgrade using commercial sources, it was decided to continue with the unique feel of the existing structure. As a result additional, larger, local rocks have been sourced and added to allow this inclusion. Members of the local community didn’t hesitate in offering labour, equipment and resources to establish additional rocks.
Thanks go to the McKenzie, Fingleton, Butler families, Plants Direct Qld and Doonan Sand and Gravel. Various rock faces will be used to add appropriate, extra plaques to the memorial.
The rocks have been placed in a manner that suggests a
cove, beach and cliffs. This symbolises the images that confronted ANZAC soldiers all those years ago.

DON WATSON’S THE BUSH Duncan Sayers
FLANNERY, GRENVILLE AND KOVAL ALL COMING TO EUMUNDI
Recently I was over in Western Australia in a scarred landscape; a devastated Jarrah forest, too long between fi res with nothing left alive in the black. Nearby was the Collie open cut coalmine - the ultimate insult to the landscape while I sat there typing using electrons shifted by burning what is removed from similar wounds in the geology. Meanwhile a manmade reservoir a short distance from Collie had been disconnected from the potable water supply due to salinity in the catchment caused by over clearing. Of all places to be reading The Bush by Don Watson, this place seemed most poignant.
In a wandering, road trip of a book, Don Watson has produced a vital history of the devastation wrought in the last few centuries on the Australian landscape and people. Culture wars be damned, this is a book that needs to be read.
His eloquence rises above the rhetoric usually employed to convince us that if we turn up at dawn on Anzac day and drunkenly wave fl ags on the 26 of January everything will be just fi ne mate. Frankly, Australia’s history since 1788 has been rather unpleasant to say the least, and the sooner that is acknowledged the sooner the repair can gain momentum.
This is the essence of The Bush. Watson writes of loss, regret, recrimination, unintended consequence – like a counselling session for any failing relationship where hope still exists. Australia’s link to our landscape is full of misunderstanding and denial from a predominantly coastal, urbane population and Watson shatters the mythology. Yet he manages to leave room for optimism, with stories of restoration and reconciliation with plenty of work yet to be done. The optimism comes from the beauty remaining even in altered landscapes; that although mistakes have been made in the past, there are those who have paid attention, learnt to do better; that from our landscape we can feed, clothe and power a growing and increasingly diverse population; that despite the devastation, one of the planet’s most ancient living cultures is still clinging on in places.
If you want to remain content in your comfortable bubble, avoid this book. If you require eloquent, national self-refl ection with slogan patriotism replaced by a mature, nuanced discourse, this book is essential reading!
This year the Sunshine Hinterland Writers Centre (SHWC) who organise the Reality Bites Festival, will be offering a series of events featuring some of Australia’s fi nest writers. So far authors Ramona Koval (Monday 15 June), Kate Grenville (Tuesday 1 September) and Tim Flannery (Tuesday 8 September) are locked in for talks at Eumundi’s School of Arts. The SHWC is
also collaborating with Maleny Outspoken to bring a series of conversations with high calibre authors – local and national – to the region. Collaboration with Noosa District High School is an important part of the SHWC work – and all three confi rmed authors will also be talking to students and staff during their visit. The SHWC shared that this is just a beginning with more to come.

GRANTS ASSIST YOUNG SPORTING CHAMPS
Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, congratulated 24 young sporting representatives from across Wide Bay, who were awarded funding under the latest round of the Australian Government’s Local Sporting Champions program.
The program helps young athletes between 12 and 18 years-old by providing them with grants of $500 to help meet the costs of participating in sporting events.
Applications can be made at any time throughout the year. ausport.gov.au/champions
SWIM CLUB PRESENTATIONAlasdair Scott
The monsoonal rain did not dampen the spirits nor spoil the convivial atmosphere at the Eumundi Swim Club Presentation evening, held at the CWA Hall recently. The whole membership was there to celebrate the swimmer’s
achievements during the 2014/15 season. Kaitlyn Walker and Troy Carlson are still in full training as they prepare to represent the club and themselves at the National Age Championships in Sydney later this month. Lachie Constable only just missed out– but we are backing him to be there next year! For a small club, it is a notable achievement to have swimmers competing at the Nationals and is in no small part due to the outstanding coaching and support of Lachie McLean.
Leadership was a theme of the evening’s speeches, with Olivia
Eumundi’s annual pub cricket match this year saw Joe’s play Joe’s on Good Friday at the Showgrounds. Organiser Richard T hurbon said this year the crew played indoor cricket rules so everyone had a bat and bowl . Surprisingly Joe’s won! Best bowler was Sophie with 5-14, best batter was ring-in Joel with 54 runs and Best on Field was Umpire Nev.
Carlson and Jameson Constable’s mentoring and support of the younger swimmers being highlighted. Outgoing President Oddbjorn ‘Lud ‘ Ludvigsen was thanked for his dedication over the last four years and he was awarded life membership in recognition of his contribution.
It was a close run competition in many of the age groups, with the
points for overall Club Champion being particularly close for both the girls and the boys. Pierce Ludvigsen edged it for the boys and Amali Scott for the girls - congratulations to them both. New club President George Brook commented, “It has been a tremendously enjoyable year with so many good young swimmers, next year will be very exciting.”

FOOD FOCUS: PINEAPPLE Liesl Doery
If we think about Sunshine Coast foods, the humble pineapple is one of the fi rst that comes to mind. But did you know that pineapples actually originated in Central and South America? An edible variety of the bromeliad family, pineapples spread around the world because they were kept on ships to ward off scurvy as they are high in vitamin C and hardy travellers. Pineapples also contain an enzyme called bromelain which is reportedly excellent for digestion and also handy as a meat tenderiser, as it breaks down proteins. A good source of manganese (not to be confused with magnesium) an element which aids metabolism, bone development and hastens wound healing – it’s an all-round health elixir.
You can grow a pineapple “fruit”
by planting the spiky head straight into the ground, however you will have to wait at least two years until the delicious fruit arrives. In the meantime , the spectacular looking plant makes a beautiful addition to any garden.
Actually a pineapple is technically not a fruit, but 100/200 fruitlets (berries) all fused together. But that perhaps is getting just a tad too pedantic. Let’s just sit back and enjoy the deliciousness of this spectacular looking, fabulous tasting and extremely healthy morsel.

We had our first working bee at the Eumundi Sunken Garden on Sunday 29 March. Nadia Joyce from the Sunshine Coast Council joined us to tell us about Council’s Community Nature Conservation Program and to give us a safety induction before we all got into it and pulled out some weeds. The invasive Singapore Daisy and Fishbone Fern were on our hit list, and we managed to clear a good sized area. These two weeds are best removed by hand, pulling out all stems and rhizomes. The lovely wet weather we’ve had has been great for pulling out weeds. The kookaburras and butcher birds were very happy that we were disturbing the leaf litter, stirring up the bugs for them.
There are many native seedlings amongst the weeds and we had fun identifying which plants were weeds or natives. There will also be
many seeds stored in the soil waiting to come up. This is called the soil seedbank. Some of these seeds will be weed seeds, so it is important for us to come back later and pull out any newcomers. If you would like to learn more about weeds or natives feel free to come along to our working bees.
Eumundi Bushcare Group working bees will be held once a month on the fourth Sunday of the month 9.30am - 12pm with morning tea provided. So that’s only two hours of weeding a month! The next working bee is Sunday 26 April, 9.30am. New members are always welcome. If you have been thinking about working with the environment this is a great way to get some experience and you can add it to your resume.

The first quarter of 2015 has been slower than usual for the Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade compared to previous years due to the wet weather. Rainfall and TC Marcia hampered efforts to carry out hazard reduction burns in the local area. With vegetation having such perfect conditions for growth this summer just gone, Autumn and Winter are great times to do a yard clean up in preparation for a stack burn in the cooler weather. If you need assistance with a stack burn you can call on your local Rural Fire Brigade. If you have a burn greater than 2m x 2m x 2m, you will need a permit to light a fire from your local fire Warden.
The Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade is currently looking for new members. Joining your local brigade is a great way to learn how to be fire savvy, an important skill when living on acreage. It is also a fun, social and rewarding way to be a part of your community, meet new people and make new friends. If you would like to join your local fire brigade please contact First Officer, Trevor Venning on 0419 778 457 or 5471 0122. Fire Brigade skill days start at 2pm on the fourth Saturday of every month at the Verrierdale Fire Brigade on Dean Rd. 0403 843 528.

ORANGE-EYED TREE FROGS Kon Hepers
The frog observing/surveying season is just about over. Nights are getting cooler and in the last few days there has been too little rain to promote frog activity. So it was fortunate that we were out there on one of those two nights in February when we had approaching 400 mm of rain. Downpours like that are exactly the conditions which bring out the Orange-eyed Tree Frog, our favourite frog by far. This is a middle-sized green frog with large orange (some say red) eyes with the binomial name Litoria chloris, meaning something like “green coastal tree frog”. This species doesn’t mind being photographed and has endearing antics, like hanging from a branch by one hand. That is why they are often depicted in acrobatic positions on paintings and postcards. They are also one of the noisiest of frogs and can be heard some distance away. The night we observed them we could hear them calling about 400 metres away while we were approaching along the road in a vehicle. The call is very different to any other (all frog
calls are species specifi c but some sound alike to the human ear) and consists of a series of very loud “baaaas” like from a mob of sheep, followed by a few very soft “chirrups”. As with all frogs, only males call to attract females and they do so from the edge of road side ditches and ephemeral pools in temporarily fl ooded grasslands. Heavy rain triggers their congregating for spawning in such places. Because many of the pools dry up soon after the rain events pass their cycle from eggs to tadpoles to froglets has to be short. At several times their calls have guided us to shallow pools with many tadpoles, only to fi nd them dried out two days later and all the tadpoles dead.
Orange-eyed Tree Frogs only emerge during and immediately after heavy rain. Even where their usual habitat of Rainforest and Wet Sclerophyl Forest contains a creek or rock pools, they come out into open ground to breed. Their range is from NSW mid-coast to Queensland mid-coast in a coastal strip. Here

Stronger beef prices, summer rains, a drop in the dollar and low interest rates have driven
the Qld’s farmer confi dence to its highest level in fi ve years. Last month’s Rabobank Rural survey found that while good seasonal conditions were not across the board, beef prices had hit record levels. Confi dence was also strong in cotton and prospects for the 2015 sugar crush remain positive.
on the Sunshine Coast we have found them in only a few places. Generally they seem to prefer more elevated areas.
Our native frog looks similar to that well known image of the South American Red-eyed Leaf Frog, Agalychnis callidryas, which is the international symbol of Rainforest Preservation. The two species are in the same family (Hylidae) but in different genera, not really closely related. Note that in the eye of the Orange-eyed Tree Frog, as in all our native tree frogs, the pupil is horizontal. In non-Australian species it is generally vertical.

EUMUNDI’S CENTENARY ANZAC DAYWendy Birrell Cont’d from page 9.
This year for the Centenary of Anzac there will be an addition to the program of a dedication of a Lone Pine seedling which has been planted near the Eumundi Amphitheatre in
a protective cage. It is a descendent of a pine tree from a ridge in Gallipoli known as Plateau 400, which was once covered in this Aleppo pine. All the trees on the ridge were cut down and used to cover and line the trenches the Australian Infantry used to fortify the area - except for one pine which came to be known as the Lone Pine; the area then became known as Lone Pine Ridge. Pine cones from this tree were brought back by two soldiers at the end of WW1 and the seeds propagated. The Duke of Gloucester planted one of these seedlings at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and trees
continue to be propagated from this pine.
Discover Eumundi will have a Centenary of Anzac display called ‘Trees of Tribute’ which will open on Monday 20 April
and tell more of the history of the 20 Memorial Trees and the stories of the men behind the plaques at the foot of each tree. More on this project at eumundihistoricalassn.org
