Kids In Action Kids In Action The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information on volunteer opportunities for young people. GOOD ORGANIZERS are needed to help with preparations for the Houston Public Library’s annual bargain book sale, to be held in the spring at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Lots of volunteers will be needed on Saturdays between now and the weekend of this gigantic sale to sort and box the massive quantities of books that will be involved. Three- hour volunteer shifts will be available at a warehouse near Bingle and Little York. Volunteers should be at least 15 years of age. CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY three days early by joining with other volunteers in a visit to local nursing homes on Saturday, February 11. If you have some time available that morning, plan on coming to any of three meeting places (in Katy, Cypress, or The Woodlands) and teaming up with other volunteers to visit one of several nearby facilities. You’ll be given handmade Valentine’s cards to share with the persons you visit. There’s no minimum age involved as long as you can arrange for transportation to the meeting place and then on to the nursing home you’ll be visiting. ADD A LITTLE WARMTH to your life by making blankets for infants and small children. An all-volunteer organization called Project Linus is looking for persons willing to create blankets for kids in distressed situations, particularly pediatric cancer patients. The blankets may be sewn, woven, crocheted, knitted, or quilted, and size doesn’t matter. You can do the work at home and on your own schedule. There’s no minimum age for this volunteer opportunity. NURTURE A CAT for an all-volunteer agency that manages adoptions for these little felines. If you’re capable of providing temporary room and board to a cat or kitten while other volunteers try to secure a permanent placement, this agency wants to hear from you. Placements are arranged at special “Adopt a Cat” stations set up at a number of cooperating pet supply stores. No minimum age is involved. MAKE OLD FRIENDS with some senior citizens by becoming a in-room visitor at a nursing home in League City. Giving one or more of the residents your individualized attention, you can come by just to chat, read to them, or maybe bring a pet along to brighten their day. Visits can be arranged for weekdays or weekends, during the daytime or early evening. Volunteers can be as young as age 12.

FOR SELF-STARTERS: Start and maintain a garden to produce vegetables for food pantries serving the needy. If you need ideas on what organization to donate the food to, just call VOLUNTEER HOUSTON at the number listed below.

(NAPS) —Three out of four taxpayers received a refund from Uncle Sam last year, averaging $2,805. This year’s amount should be about the same, thanks to a few major tax law changes expiring or added during 2011. Although your bottom line may change little, there are changes you should be aware of for this year’s tax return. “Unless lawmakers extend them, this will be the last year to claim several well-known tax breaks,” according to TaxACT spokesperson Jessi Dolmage. “Take advantage of them while you still can. With 2012 being an election year, it’s anyone’s guess as to what changes could be in store for next year’s return.” Before you do your taxes, read this summary of the more notable changes that may affect your federal return this year. • The filing deadline is Tuesday, April 17, 2012, because April 15 is a Sunday and Washington, D.C., is recognizing Emancipation Day on April 16. Don’t use the later deadline as an excuse to procrastinate, though. When you rush, you’re more likely to make mistakes that could cost you money and time. Furthermore, filing, paying or providing information late will result in IRS penalties that have increased this year. • Your 2011 tax return could be your last chance to claim one of the credits for energy-efficient home improvements as well as deductions for tuition and fees, educator expenses, mortgage insurance premiums, and the option to include your state and local sales taxes paid as an itemized deduction (in lieu of state and local income taxes paid). • The Making Work Pay Tax Credit and Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit (unless it was a new fuel-cell vehicle) that you could claim last year have expired. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit was essentially replaced by the payroll tax holiday for 2011, which employees and the self-employed already received in 2011 paychecks through a reduction in FICA-OASDI Social Security taxes. Unlike the Making Work Pay Tax Credit, employees who benefited from the payroll tax holiday don’t need to claim it on this year’s tax return. • The amount of the Health Coverage Tax Credit decreased to 72.5 percent for qualified health insurance coverage received between March and December 2011. • If you converted a traditional IRA to a designated Roth IRA in 2010 or rolled over a qualified retirement plan to a Roth IRA, but did not report the taxable amount on your 2010 tax return (due April 2011), you must report half the amount on this year’s return and the other half on your 2012 return. Details are available in IRS Publication 575 at www.irs.gov. • Amounts for standard mileage, standard deductions, personal exemptions and the Alternative Minimum Tax have increased. Note that there are different standard mileage rates for miles driven before July 1 and after June 30. Details about all increases and other tax law changes can be found in IRS Publication 17. We at the Better Business Bureau of Greater Houston and South Texas read thousands of complaints every year. As we do this, we work under the assumption that it is reasonable to expect good service. However, it often happens that people receive poor or discourteous service and they have every right to lodge a complaint with that business or with us.

With that being said, we are sometimes perplexed as to the expectations and behaviors of those doing the complaining. Keeping that in mind, we would like to remind the consumer of a couple “reality checks” that might be useful when deciding whether to lodge a complaint or not.

Don’t frequent the business if you don’t like it. We receive complaints in which the consumer had a poor first experience, and then a poor second experience, and the same experience during subsequent visits to the same business. A really good way to send a message to a poorly performing business is to stop giving them your money.

Don’t expect more than what is reasonable. While it is reasonable to expect good service, the level of service that you get at different types of businesses will vary depending on the pool of personnel that they have to choose from to fill positions. I’m not saying that this is the way it should be, I’m just being realistic. If the person at the burger drive- through did not wish you a “nice day”, it still does not entitle you to a year of free burgers (besides, if it bothered you that much why would you want to come back….see previous paragraph).

Now, on to the ten New Year’s resolutions to become a wiser consumer in 2012:

1. Beware of job offers to make easy money. Scammers are targeting job hunters, so beware of offers, work-at- home schemes or business opportunities promising big money for little work and no experience.

2. Look for the BBB seal and always check businesses out before buying. Nearly 400,000 businesses meet your BBB’s Standards for Trust and bear the BBB Accreditation Seal. But, your BBB doesn’t just report on Accredited Businesses. You can review reliability

reports for nearly 4 million businesses by visiting www.bbbhouston.org.

3. Always read the fine print—especially for free trial offers. Thousands of people complained to your BBB in 2011 after signing up for free trial offers online that resulted in repeated charges to their credit or debit cards sometimes amounting to as much as hundreds of dollars every month. Read the terms and conditions of free trial offers before handing over credit or debit card numbers.

4. Keep your computer safe. Install anti- virus software onto your computer and regularly check for software and operating system updates and patches. Don’t open attachments or click on links in e-mails unless you can confirm they came from trusted sources.

5. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Many scams require you to wire money back to the scammers. Scammers know tracking money sent via MoneyGram or Western Union is extremely difficult. Even more troubling is it’s nearly impossible to get your money back.

6. Fight identity theft. Always shred paper documents that include sensitive financial data and dispose of computers, cell phones and digital data safely. Your BBB offers tips and checklists on what to shred and hosts annual Secure Your ID events nationwide to help you stay safe.

7. Ask your BBB for help. File a complaint with your BBB if you have a disagreement with a business or been ripped off by a scammer.

8. Create a budget and stick to it. If you’re cash-strapped, setting a budget can help you stay afloat in 2012. Your BBB has advice on how to create a budget and help you get out and stay out of debt at www.bbbhouston.org.

9. Fight fake check fraud. Educate yourself on the common types of check fraud and be wary of checks that come with claims you’ve won the lottery, are eligible for a government grant or have landed a job as a secret shopper.

10. Get everything in writing. Don’t just take a business’ word for it. Get verbal agreements in writing to limit miscommunication and misunderstandings between your expectations and what the business delivers.

Being a savvy consumer is ultimately about using money wisely. This year, resolve to create a budget, research businesses before buying and stay away from scammers.

Create a story using the 5 W’s

One warm spring day my principal decided to take us to a science lab where they were building a portal to the creatures time period. When they asked for a test subject, I said “ME!” They agreed and showed me where to stand. I walked through the portal and it looked so cool! I saw an old spinosaurus.

One day when everyone was enjoying life, aliens began to invade the universe! They enslaved all humans except for 5 families. Those five families got together and teamed up to deafeat the aliens. They finally won! The universe was saved.

You want to know what happened to my best friend? Well, it was a normal day and Jason was at my house for New Years Eve. We ate and popped firecrackers and had a lot o fun. All of a sudden I saw Jason with some shoes that I had never seen before and they were glowing!

Jason slipped and fell in a hole and the shoes helped us find where he was.

One day I was sitting on my bed and a rock fell on my head. I was knocked out! I started to dream and I woke up in a Monster truck rally. Everyone started screaming my name, AMANDA! AMANDA!! They rushed me to the stage and told me it was time to sing my big song. I got up on a big Monster Truck and sang Christmas songs. I was a little confused, but then I opened my eyes and realized it was all a dream.

KNOCK! KNOCK! YAY! My friend Rachel is here! “Hey, do you have a drink?” She asked. “Um…oh ya, my moms friend brought some soda yesterday, do you want Dr. Pepper?” “Sure!” Rachel said. She drank the Dr. Pepper and automatically turned into a frog! She was a huge, big, green, slimy frog! It was crazy! So we ran to my room so no one would laugh at her. Later that day she drank some ice cold water and turned back to normal. Turns out, my moms friend brought poisoned soda to us! How rude is that?
