While attending college, it can be very difcult to

nd makeup to purchase on a budget.

Whether you are in need of a fresh

makeup collection or a few additional products for

spring and summer trends, there are a number of af-

fordable options. Companies like ELF (Eyes, Lips,

Face) Cosmetics and NYX have been providing inex-

pensive alternatives to high-end brands for years.

Most ELF products sell for an amaz-

ingly low $1 or $3. One of their best products is theEye Shadow Primer, which at $1 is comparable to

high-end primers like Urban Decays Primer Potion

and Too Faced Shadow Insurance, both around $20.

ELFs Shimmering Facial Whip is an excellent multi-

purpose product, most commonly used as a highlight-

er for the cheek and brow bones. This can create a

beautiful, glowing face for spring at only $1. ELFs

eyebrow kit is another great high-end dupe. For the

lips, ELFs mineral lipsticks provide a nice creamy tex-

ture.

NYXs inexpensive Soft Matte Lip

Cream is another remarkable and revolutionary lip

product. It goes on wet like a gloss and dries like a

matte lipstick or lip-stain. For spring, try shades like

Tokyo, coral, Addis Ababa or bright fuchsia for $6

apiece. NYXs single eyeshadows are also worth men-

tioning; they offer over 100 shades.

A NYX staple of most Youtube beauty gurus and

makeup artists alike is Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk. This

creamy white product is commonly spread over the

eyelid as a base for powder shadow and adds that extra

impact. The Jumbo Pencils are $4.50. NYX cosmetics

can be ordered online or purchased in ULTA.

There are also several fresh and innovative drug-

store products that have recently piqued the interest

of many makeup-savvy YouTube gurus as well as the

average college student. Some of these products have

the same quality of pigmentation and lasting color asproducts found in department stores and Sephora.

Some outstanding drugstore prod-

ucts include Revlon Color-burst Lip Butters and May-

belline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24-hour Cream Gel

Shadow. Having recently become a lip-product junkie,

the Revlon Lip Butters are the Holy Grail, selling at

about $7 at most drug stores, Wal-Marts and Targets;

available in 20 shades. They have a smooth, creamy

consistency and leave the lips feeling soft. The color

varies in pigmentation with the different shades, stay-

ing for hours unlike some tinted lip balms. These lip

butters have a glossy nish, which looks as if a lipstick

and a lip gloss were applied.

Similarly, the Maybelline Color Tattoo product is a

wonderful cream or gel for the eyes that can be very

versatile. It can be used as a base for powder eye shad -

ows, so they wear longer and show up stronger, or on

their own as a nice wash of color over the lid. There

are 10 shades available, with both matte and frost n -

ishes.

Wetn Wilds Comfort Zone eye-

shadow palettes are additional, convenient products.

They contain neutral colors and bright, neon bolds

with both matte and shimmer shades. For great look-

ing eyelashes to compliment the new eyeshadows, try

Maybellines The Falsies mascara. It adds extreme

length and denition.

For the face, Neutragenas founda-

tions are wonderful and provide a soft, glowing ap-

pearance. NYXs powder blushes can also add a soft or

extreme ush to the apples of the cheeks or beneath

the cheekbones for contouring. Try a blush in a coral

color for a fresh, spring look. Sonia Kashuks makeup

brushes, found in Target, are also highly recommend-

ed.

Most of the top spring trends can be

created with these products. Top styles this season in -

clude coral on the lips or cheeks, violet or green on the

eyes, fuchsia anywhere, and bold pastels, like soft pink.

Pops of color are an important factor in this years

spring makeup looks.

eclectic as I possibly can and if you mention an artist

to me, Ive probably listened to them. However, I

can honestly say that I know next to nothing about

the world of DJs. When Jersey Shore premiered, I

noticed the most incredible inux of people giving

themselves the DJ title. I was getting an endless array

of Facebook event invitations to see DJ Sebi and DJ

Giuseppe scratching at the local community center.

Whats with this DJ craze?I was fortunate enough to get the chance to con-

duct an interview with a real DJ, fellow classmate

David DJ Dav Negron, who frequently if not end-

lessly, spends his time and energy creating tracks and

scouring Philadelphia promoting his shows.

Q:When did you begin DJing? What made you want

to start?

A: I started DJing when I was 16 years old. I learned

from listening to the radio, buying records, and prac-

ticing them in my bedroom. Ive always been around

different music and have been exposed to DJs that

I knew growing up. It made me curious as to what I

could contribute to this art form.

Q: Do you have any big inuences that affect the

way you create your music or affect your sound?

A: My musical inspirations would have to be the

people I grew up with, from family to friends. The

diversity in music and genres that my friends are into

continues to help me grow, not only as a person, but

a better DJ each year.

Q: What do you use to create your mixes? Equip-

ment?

A: I own a pair of Technics SL-1200MK2, A Rane

TTM 57SL Performance Mixer with Serato Scratch

LIVE Software, and a pair of JBL powered speakers.

Thats my mobile set up. I just started using a pro -

gram called Ableton Live which allows me to make

personal edits and remixes to songs.

Q: Where do you usually play? How often do you

play?

A: I spin at least three times a week. Im usually

playing in Manayunk and the Center City Area. I

made my start in the city and have continued to play

at various bars and nightclubs there. Im starting to

pick up more and more gigs during the week and

weekend but I currently hold residency at Voyeur

nightclub every Wednesday, every rst Friday of the

month at Silk City [4th and Spring Garden], and ev-

ery second and fourth Friday at Rogues Gallery [11

South 21st Street, between Market and Chestnut].

Q: What is your opinion on the massive inux of

musicians calling themselves DJs?

A: I think its great that DJing is getting more rec-

ognized amongst the public but I do fear the easy

access of purchasing certain programs and software

to DJ with. As long as youre DJing for the right rea-

sons and not for the fame, money, and power, then

youre going to make it far.

Q: What are you working on currently? Anything

noteworthy?

A: I have a mix tape Im doing with another DJ

named Reed Streets entitled The Fix. We have a

popular MC from the city named MC Elixir hosting

it with drops from other respectable DJs. Other than

that, Ive just been re-inventing myself marketing-wise. In these days, its more about your promotions

and how you market yourself that allows you to get

work and bigger gigs.

Q: Next show? Any shout-outs?

A: As of right now, Im just booked for my residen-

cies. This Wednesday, Proper Panda. This Friday, Silk

City. Im just thankful for meeting the people Ive

met in this industry. The opportunities given to me

couldnt have been made without their guidance and

support. Also, I would like to thank the people who

continue to support me whether it be coming out to

my gigs or being there in spirit. Im truly blessed to

have these people in my life to keep me motivated to

strive to be the best.
