When thinking of Laughlin Nevada and the Mojave Resort Golf Club, most people think of two things, beautiful golf course and hot, hot weather. One of those thoughts rang true at the site of the SNGA Championship and State Match Play Qualifier held on June 12 - 13. The weather was cool and scoring conditions on the par 72 layout were perfect. 60 golfers made the trip down to Laughlin to compete in four different divisional events including the Scratch (Championship), Net, Senior, and Super Seniors. This event was also the qualifier for the 2010 Nevada State Match Play Championships, so many golfers attempted to grind out a spot at a chance to represent their club in the first state event of the year. Hamstring Stretch for Good Posture

Most golf professionals agree that every good golf swing begins with a sound, correct setup and posture position. Cor-rect posture is the foundation of every successful player’s golf swing. Consequently, every golfer should be aware of the physical requirements necessary to achieve correct posture at address. Tight hamstrings are a common limitation found in many golfers today. Hamstrings are the muscles behind the thighs which extend from the hips and attach below the knee. They allow for the bending of the knees during activities such as walking and running. The hamstrings also control the degree to which your pelvis and spine can bend forward in the ad-dress position of your golf swing. If the hamstrings are tight, you will be unable to bend forward enough from the hips in your posture position, resulting in a posture position that is bent too far from the knees or overly rounded in the spine. If you think tight hamstrings are affecting your posture posi-tion at address, try the following hamstring stretch which will allow you to achieve ideal posture at address and minimize swing flaws influenced by your current posture position. Find a corner of a wall in your home where you can lay down on your back. Place your right foot up against the wall and your left leg flat on the floor. Position yourself appropriately before beginning the stretch by placing a small towel roll un-der your lower back for support. Choose a distance from the wall that will not create an excessive, painful amount of stretch to the back of your leg as you reach your leg up on the wall. Begin the stretch by gently contracting your lower ab-dominal muscles, flattening your lower back into the towel roll. Gently squeeze your right thigh muscle to comfortably straighten your right knee. Bend your right ankle down to-ward you so you feel a gentle stretch in your right calf. If you are properly positioned away from the wall, this stretch will create a comfortable pulling, stretching sensation to the back of your knee, your upper and lower leg in the hamstring, and the calf muscles. If you feel too much stretch, move farther down the wall and try again. When you have found the right distance from the wall, hold the stretch position for 3-5 minutes or until a complete release of the stretch feeling has been accomplished. Switch legs and repeat the stretch. You can advance the stretch when ready by gradually moving closer to the wall and sliding your leg farther up the wall. Perform this exercise at least 3 days per week for 2-3 weeks. You should begin to notice a big difference in your ability to achieve a correct posture position at address and a more consistent golf swing. For more information on balance and the golf swing, call Arnel Gaspar at Body Balance for Performance at 702.882.9727.

CHRISTINA MONTEIRO 2010 SOUTHERN NEVADA WOMENS AMATEUR CHAMPION

The Women’s Southern Nevada Golf As-sociation Amateur Championship con-cluded on Tuesday, June 15. Bears Best played host to the event with beautiful conditions and only a few gusts of wind during the final nine holes of the 2-day event. The 2010 WSNGA Amateur Cham-pion, Christina Monteiro, carded even par rounds for the 2 days of play for an im-pressive 144 to win the championship. Last year’s champion, Laurie Johnson, was only 3 shots back after day 1, but was unable to close the gap. In the closely contested net division, a 3-hole aggregate play-off was necessary to break the tie for first place. Laura Smith and Laurie Johnson played the first 2 holes neck and neck, but number 3, a 323 yd par-4, proved to be the difference. A narrow driving hole and uphill second shot to a small green became the tie breaker as Lau-rie Johnson made a 5 to become the 2010 WSNGA Amateur Champion/Net Divi-sion. This year we also qualified 18 of the 20 players for the 2010 Silver Cup team dur-ing the championship. The players were

competing for the 9 low gross and 9 low net scores to qualify for this year’s team. This year’s team will consist of: Masako Brown, Sarah Bowman, Diana Chapman, Susan Daum, Sandy Day, Doe Emes, Diana Hamilton, Clara Heo, Laurie Johnson, Rae Ann Kicker, Lynn King, Brenda Knott, Nao Mizuno, Christina Monteiro, Deb Rees, Robbin Sanchez, Vilma Saucedo and Laura Smith. Captains, Laurie Johnson and Janet Weber will make to captains’ picks to complete the team of 20. This year’s Silver Cup will be contested October 25-27 at Primm Valley, on the Lakes course.

Q. A player purposely refuses to identify a ball as his. What can the opponent or a fellow-competitor do in such a case?

A. An opponent or fellow-competitor has the right to be satisfied about the identification of a player's ball.

If a player has dishonestly not identified his ball, the oppo-nent or fellow-competitor may refer the dispute to the Committee under Rule 34-3. In such a case, the Committee would be justified in imposing a penalty of disqualification under Rule 33-7.

* Dishonestly not identifying his ball means that if an opponent or fellow-competitor finds a ball which is be-lieved to be the player’s ball, the player must then go to the place and identify that ball as their own. If the player does not attempt to identify the original ball and plays another ball, the player is deemed to have played from a wrong place. If the player has finished the hole from the wrong place without correcting the mistake, the player would then be subject to the penalty of disqualification by the Committee.
