COCA’S EDUCATIONAL APPROACHAt COCA, we place great emphasis on the student-teacher relationship and value a process-based approach rooted in Studio Habits of Mind (SHOM), a framework developed by a research team from Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. SHOM helps to define quality teaching and learning across disciplines, sites and programs, and provides a common language for COCA staff, faculty, students and the community.

DEVELOP CRAFTLearning to use tools, materials and artistic conventions, and learning to care for tools, materials and space.

ENGAGE & PERSISTLearning to embrace problems of relevance within the art world and/or of personal importance; learning to develop focus conducive to working and persevering at tasks.

ENVISIONLearning to picture mentally what cannot be directly observed, and learning to imagine possible next steps in making a piece.

EXPRESSLearning to create works that convey an idea, a feeling or a personal meaning.

OBSERVELearning to attend to visual contexts more closely than ordinary “looking” requires, and thereby learning to see things that otherwise might not be seen.

REFLECTLearning to think and talk with others about an aspect of one’s work or working process; learning to judge one’s own work, working process and the work of others.

STRETCH & EXPLORELearning to reach beyond one’s capacities, to explore playfully without a preconceived plan and to embrace the opportunity to learn from one’s mistakes.

UNDERSTAND ARTS COMMUNITYLearning to interact as an artist with other artists—in classrooms, in local arts organizations and across the arts field—and within the broader society.

EXCEPTIONAL TEACHING ARTISTSCOCA’s more than 200 teaching artists are highly qualified in their fields, having professional experience in their art forms and a depth of teaching expertise.

WHY COCA?NATIONALLY ACCREDITEDAn Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS) and National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD) Accredited School.

STUDENT DANCE ENSEMBLESCOCA’s dance ensembles prepare young artists in elementary through high school to discover and achieve more than they’ve ever imagined. Members of each company participate in a minimum of four to six dance classes a week at COCA and rehearse one or two times a week. Students also have the rewarding experience of working in a wide variety of styles due to COCA’s commitment to arranging annual residencies with multiple visiting artists. These select guest choreographers are notable dance practitioners who provide their expertise to our students with a learning experience that mirrors the nature of a professional dance setting.

BALLET ECLECTICABallet Eclectica pulls from the best of classical & contemporary ballet to build a repertoire fit for our top ballet students. Members of Ballet Eclectica are selected based on their ability to demonstrate clean classical technique, and strong pointe work.

COCADANCECOCAdance is an advanced student dance ensemble comprised of COCA’s most versatile young artists. Members of COCAdance are selected based upon their technical proficiency across genres, and an eagerness to engage in the creative process.

COCA HIP-HOP CREW The COCA Hip-Hop Crew consists of students ages 10–18, as well as select adult hip-hop performers from the St. Louis region. Founded by Artistic Director Anthony “Redd” Williams, COCA’s Hip-Hop Crew follows a curriculum designed to prepare students for careers in the commercial dance industry. Crew members are selected after demonstrating their ability to pick up choreography, understanding of rhythm and movement quality.

AUDITIONSBallet Eclectica, COCAdance and the COCA Hip-Hop Crew hold auditions every May.

ALLEGRO & ADAGIO VOCAL ENSEMBLESCOCA’s student vocal ensembles, Allegro (first company) and Adagio (second company), provide vocalists, ages 11–18 years, with a variety of performance opportunities. Students are expected to have knowledge of music reading and are selected by audition. Both companies rehearse weekly. Students selected will pay dues and must enroll in the three specified classes at COCA.

AUDITIONSAllegro and Adagio hold open auditions every May. For more information, or to schedule a private audition during the year, contact Jennifer Wintzer, Artistic Director of Theatre, at [email protected].

Any student who has the passion, talent and self-discipline needed to succeed in a rigorous arts training program will feel at home in one of COCA’s student ensembles. From training with professional guest artists, to unforgettable performance opportunities, to individualized career guidance, we offer a nurturing path for every student based on their own aspirations, ideas and perspectives. Financial assistance is available for students who qualify.
