Message from the President LINDA HIATT

—2—

This is not a goodbye, my darling, this is a thank you. Thank you for coming into my life and

giving me joy, thank you for loving me and receiving my love in return. Thank you for the

memories I will cherish forever. --Anonymous

Always a symphony, never a solo. We created, conducted

and played a lovely symphony this year. From our first

movement (brisk and lively!) in the fall with Feast and

Follies and middle school concerts to our second movement

in late fall/early winter (slow and lyrical!) of simply socials and

membership meetings to our third movement (dancy!) of Let’s Get Shamrocked, our

40th elementary school concerts, a hugely successful Super Sale and Love and Music

Tennis Tournament. Whew! Not to mention intermissions of luncheons, meetings,

fellowship, good times and laughter in between. And our fourth and final movement

(rollicking!) on May 16 when I presented a check on your behalf to Lisa Crawford in

the amount of $65,000, bringing our total orchestra support for 2017-2018 to

$106,915.

This is the symphony we created together. None of us could have done it alone—

solos are beautiful and appreciated and resonate more richly in the context of the total

symphony.

Well, here we are. It’s time for me to exit right and go back to “civilian” life!

Every president says it, and I am no exception—I could not have served in this role

without the support of my family and all of you. All our sponsors, everyone who came

to a fundraiser, a membership meeting, a luncheon, a board or committee meeting, or

who answered yes when asked to step up. This symphony belongs to you. Thank you

for allowing me to play a small part in it with you.

Best,

Linda

and served as the Programs Chair for the Guild. In addition, she has served on several committees for the Presentation Ball and she just finished serving as one of the chairs for the 2018 Super Sale.

What brought Andrea to the Guild is her love for both music and education as she plays both the piano and violin. She taught pre-school and special needs pre-school children in Medway, Massachusetts for most of the 20 years she and her family lived there. She has a Bachelors and Masters degree in early childhood education and devel-opment from Michigan State University.

Andrea is very active in her church, Saint Francis Episcopal. She sings in the choir, works on the annual book sale and leads the Stephen Ministry Program, a sup-port and listening trained group for people with life issues. She is also active with Family Services of the Piedmont and is a past President of the Greensboro Newcomers Club.

Andrea has been married to her husband, Ralph, for 37 years and they have three children: Sarah, Peter and Allison, and six grandchildren.

Thank you to Andrea for your many years of service to the Greensboro Symphony Guild.

2018 Annual Education Campaign has Started The Guild’s Education Campaign established in 2015 has continued to be a success in providing funds for additional music education needs in our community as identified by the GSO. The Education Campaign Committee of the Guild determines how these monies are distributed and all contributions go directly to the designated students and programs – the Guild has complete autonomy over these contributions.

Thank you to those members who donated to the campaign in 2017. The funds collected provided:

New Violins for the Beginning Strings Program

The “Side By Side” concert that took place on May 13, 2018 with 30 GSO musicians performing with 60 GSYO members: the culmination of a mentorship between the Symphony musicians and the student musicians from the Youth orchestra. This year’s Campaign will fund

equally meaningful needs. It runs from May through December 2018 and we hope members will consider making a contribution. For your convenience, you can make a donation to the Campaign at the same time you renew your membership this spring by indicating it on the Membership renewal form. You may

Side-by-Side Concert Closes GSYO Year

Every spring, innumerable hours of

practice come together in spectacular fashion. On Sunday, May 13, the three levels of the Greensboro Symphony Or-chestra program concluded the school year with a memorable performance at Dana Auditorium. The Youth Camerata and Philharmonic began the program, showing an enthusiastic audience of friends, family and Guild members the impressive progress they’ve made since September. Immediately after, the GSYO took the stage for the highly an-ticipated Side-by-Side Concert made possible by donations to the 2017-18 Annual Education Campaign. The Side-by-Side concept afforded youth musi-cians the opportunity to perform beside 30 of their professional mentors from the GSO. It was remarkable to witness the students playing beside their adult men-tors--an incredible learning experience for all!

Guild President Linda Hiatt ad-dressed the audience prior to the concert, thanking the Guild for the generous do-nations that were “instrumental” in mak-ing this concert possible. Featured works included Vaughan Williams, Mendels-sohn, Holst and Marquez. Sam Wilson Award winner Anna Sykes wowed the audience with a Mendelssohn Violin Concerto.

Enthusiasm in the crowd was palpa-ble and will surely energize the students until September when they will audition for next year’s Youth Orchestra. Many thanks to Youth Conductors Evan Feld-man (GSYO), Colleen Chenail and Lee Richey (Youth Philharmonic) and Ra-chel Watson and Ryane Dunnagan (Youth Camerata).

What an exciting five days! From the awe of original compo-sitions to screams (and that's from the adults), the elementary con-certs offered everything.

To the delight of approxi-

mately 13,000 third and fourth graders, domestic dogs and invisi-ble dogs pranced, sharks circled, and an extinct dinosaur invaded Grimsley Senior High School for a wonderful concert by our Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. This year marks the 40th anniver-sary of inception of the concerts. As always the symphony didn't disappoint. This wonderful event is what our organization is all about.

Thank you, Volunteers Thank you to all the valuable

volunteers in our membership. Without you, these concerts are not possible and would not go as smoothly. We appreciate you whether you worked one day or all. You helped make another year of the concerts a success. We look forward to 2019 already.

Creativity and a love of music, especially symphony music, were in abundance for those who attended the 40th Anniversary Cel-ebration Luncheon of the Guild’s Elementary School Concerts on March 23. The idea for the concerts began in 1977 with Guild mem-bers, Margaret Faison, Peggy Johnson and Judy Jolly. It became a reality with the cooperation and commitment of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra personnel and staff, the school board, the school administration and teachers, a sponsor to pay for the buses and, of course, the Greensboro Symphony Guild members. What started out as an initiative for 5000 Greensboro students, has mor-phed into a major project. In 2018 we reached 13,000 Greensboro area students and 7,000 in Alamance, Randolph, and Rockingham counties.

Starting with the presentation of the concert’s history by Dar-lene Young, the luncheon program featured inspirational testimo-nies from special guests Judge Angela Foster (daughter of Dr. Carl Foster, 1978 Team Member and Music Supervisor of Greensboro City Schools) and GSO Violist Caroline Jones who both spoke about how music had affected their lives. Music educator Sheryl Summerell added a visual presentation of the positive effects of music on children. Those present were treated to a Bert and Ernie show by puppeteers Sharon Sural and Louann Clarke. Sally Car-michael, 1978 Elementary Concerts Chair, capped off the day by singing a delightful original parody titled “Get Me to the Bus on Time”.

It is amazing that all the groups who initiated these concerts have remained committed through the years. We thank those who came to celebrate with us including 17 of the original Guild com-mittee members and many city and school officials.

Our grateful appreciation goes to those many individuals, especially to Mary Fran Schickedantz and Kristie Smith, who brought about the amazing recognition luncheon of the 40th Anniversary of our Elementary School Concerts held at Greensboro Country Club on March 23. We experienced fantastic support from our Guild members, the GSO staff, and school administrators. Special thanks to the program participants who brought back history, laughter, and fond memories. What fun to see that Bert and Ernie are still at it!

Finally, we are truly grateful to our anonymous luncheon benefactor, and to those many individuals who made donations in support of the Elementary School Concerts. Their names are listed below.

Kennedy Center Picks Guilford Schools for National Arts Honor

Excerpt from article by Jessica Pounds, Greensboro News & Record, April 9, 2018

The Guilford County Board of Edu-cation is the winner of the 30th annual Kennedy Center and National School Boards Association award, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington announced Monday. The award honors just one school board in the nation per year.

The Center praised the district for working to evaluate the impact of its ap-proach to the arts and for allocating a “significant portion” of the district budget to the arts “despite economic setbacks.”

The district spent about $23 million, or 3.7 percent of its 2016-17 school year budget, on the arts, said the district’s fine arts director, Nathan Street.

The award honors the 2017 school board: Alan Duncan, Darlene Garrett, T.

Dianne Bellamy-Small, Wes Cashwell, Byron Gladden, Deena Hayes-Greene, Anita Sharpe, Pat Tillman and Linda Welborn. The board plans to put the award’s $10,000 prize toward arts educa-tion.

A national review panel selects the winner from nominees from across the country. To qualify, school boards must demonstrate support for four of the five core disciplines in arts education pro-grams: visual arts, music, theater, dance and media arts, and instruction and pro-grams must be available for all students throughout the district.

Mario Rossero, the vice president of education for the Kennedy Center, said the honor looks at the level of support, strategies and policies a district uses. There was one factor, he said, that put the Guilford County Board of Education ahead when it came to selecting a winner:

the arts master plan that Street and others debuted in 2017.

“It was really their comprehensive strategy that made them a very clear choice,” he said. Many school districts have great arts programs, he said, but most don’t have a detailed plan of what they want to do to improve and grow, or how they’ll accomplish it.

Guilford County Schools makes sure all third, fourth and seventh-grade stu-dents attend the symphony and all fifth-graders experience the opera, according to the Center. Artists-in-residence provid-ed by the district teach history through art in fourth-grade classrooms.

“I think our winning the grant really demonstrated to me that we were in a place where now we can really move at lightning speed and get a lot more recog-nition,” Street said.
