Welcome Back!Another year of school, another year of memories. Along with the inevitable seemingly never ending classes and countless hours studying, you could potentially wonder why you’re here. However, we assure you that with the monotony of school comes a plethora of opportunities to make your experience here at the U worthwhile. From Crimson Nights to tailgating to Redfest, college life is so much more than study groups and papers.

Although we can’t encourage you to skip out on class the first day Snowbird opens or the night before your final spend a spontaneous night downtown, we’re positive that your life here at the U can be something unforgettable.

As part of our commitment to campus life at the U, The GurU is here to help you make the most of this year. Returning students, we say to you that there are still undiscovered op-portunities for you to make this year even better than last. New students, welcome, and be assured that just like the movies, college is always at least ten times incredibly more awe-some than high school. If you really are determined to make the most of this year, The GurU is your source for campus enlightenment. From the best study spots on campus to the worst places off campus, we will bring you something new and different in each month.

The Latter-day Saint Student Association (LDSSA) is the stu-dent group that organizes many

of the activities in the LDS Institute. LDSSA is a great way to get involved, work with many groups on campus and make some great friends. LDSSA works closely with ASUU, the University Service Corps, the Inter-faith Council, the Greeks, UPC, and many other groups on campus. Anyone is welcome to join.

LDSSA Sigma Gamma Chi and Lambda Delta Sigma are the LDS fraternities and sororities. The fraternity Sigma Gamma Chi has 12 chapters on campus, while the sorority has 17 chapters. LDS Greek life provides social and service opportunities, and is alter-native to traditional college fraternities and sororities.

Our recruitment week is the first week of class.

Rich in tradition, Greek Life has been here at the U for more than 100 years. The chapters on this campus are responsible for some

of the most successful people in the world, including: Jon Hunts-man Jr., the US Ambassador to China; Spence Eccles, banking ty-coon; Stephen Covey, renowned author; Sally Burbidge, dedicated philanthropist; and Patrice Arent, former State Senator.

This should not come as a surprise, since Greek members are the most involved students on campus. Many Greeks have leadership roles in ASUU, UPC, the Bennion Center and RHA.

In addition to being involved on campus, Greek members also get to partake in lots of fun activities and events. A sneak peek at the average semester for a Greek student would include social exchanges, date nights, formal dances, vacations, and more!

Service Day.

Join the Bennion Commu-nity Service Center at 8am at Parkview Elementary to kick-off the 2010 Homecom-ing Week. Numerous service projects such as garden-ing, marrow donation, land restoration, and more will take place throughout the community

September 21stHouse Decorating

House Decorating Competi-tion between organizations on campus to see who has the most school pride! Par-ticipants include the Alumni House, Officer’s Circle, Greek Row and others to deck out their respective buildings with their take on this year’s theme: Forever Crimson. Begins at 4pm.

September 23stSongfest

Greeks and others compete in this annual event to repre-sent this year’s Homecoming theme, “Forever Crimson.” 6pm in the Union Ballroom

September 23stCrimson Rally

Come cheer on your Ute football team and coaches, and enjoy games, food and fun at the annual pep rally! 8:30pm at the Union patio. There will also be a free concert by Kalai and carnival rides.

September 24thScramble Golf Tournament

Come join the Alumni at 8am for the fifth annual Home-coming Scholarship Scramble at Bonneville Golf Course. For $150 a player, tournament includes lunch, prizes, and more. All proceeds support scholarships for students.

September 24thHomecoming Dance

Come celebrate Homecom-ing with your fellow stu-dents and Utes in Rice Ec-cles Stadium Tower. Tickets are just $5 per person and parking will be available at the stadium. The dance begins at 9pm and goes until midnight.

September 25thYoung Alumni Scholarship 5K

Bring your running shoes for the annual Young Alumni 5K at 8:30am. Prizes will be awarded to the runner wear-ing the most red and the “Most Outrageous Ute Fan”. All proceeds go to student scholarships. Go get ‘em!

September 25thTailgate and Game

Tailgate kicks of at 4pm. Homecoming game against San Jose State at 6pm. GO UTES!

Get Involved!!!For sophomore Neena Pack, getting involved on campus has opened a world of leadership oppor-tunities. Her story is just one of many that can

testify about the benefits of getting involved on campus.

I’m on an airplane right now, fly-ing home from a leadership con-ference I’ve been at for the past week in Kentucky (Courtesy of the U). Random, I know. I’ve been trying to think how exactly I ended up on this flight. It’s only

been a year since I began my journey at the University of Utah.

It all started my first semester last sum-mer. A friend of mine had convinced me to join Union Programming Council. After a little research I discovered that UPC was responsible for all the fun program-ming events on campus such as Crimson Nights, Food for Finals, OktoberFest, and the Black Pumpkin Affair. I made so many friends and had such a blast!

When fall semester started I was ea-ger to get more involved. My twin sister, Neela, and I both decided to go through Greek Recruitment and joined the Delta Gamma sorority. It was the best decision I ever made. I loved Greek life so much that when the semester was coming to an end I ran for a position and became Director of Finance for Delta Gamma and Panhellenic Events Chair for Greek Coun-cil.

Spring started to get a little hectic with everything I took on, but it ended up being a blast! A peek at my past spring semester: Delta Gamma Spring Formal, ASUU elections, Greek Conference in Cal-ifornia, UPC Retreat in Park City, volun-teering at the Grand Kerfuffle, Rock the U, and Greek Week.

From tailgates to Greek formals my experience as a college student so far has been defined by my involvement on campus. For me my involvement on campus has made my time at the U so far all the more memorable.

Here are some advantages that come with being involved at the University of Utah: -Tuition stipends, -Office/study space, -Networking opportunities, -Lots of free food and shirts, -Great resume builder, -Front row seats in the MUSS, -Backstage access at Redfest, -Travel opportunities, -Early class registration, and - New friends.

Involvement is something I love and am really passionate about. It gets crazy busy, but that’s how I like it. Without my involvement on campus, my college life just wouldn’t have been the same.
