THE PAYNTER HOME FOR CHILDREN FOUNDED IN 1924 BY REV. ARNOLD G PAYNE

Dear Mr. Fernando and all the members of the Silver Fawn Club Inc.,

“Thanks is not enough”

When someone reaches out To help us through when times are tough,

It does so much to give us hope and brighten up our day And though our “thanks” is genuine, it’s never quite enough

Compared to all the happiness their kindness brings our way. “Thanks” is just a portion of a deep appreciation For sharing so much goodness from your heart.

Your kindness is such a source of joy and inspiration That “thanks” is not enough, it’s just a start.

I was made to understand by Mr. Dennis and Mrs. Barbara Rode of Australia, that you and the members of the Silver Fawn Club Inc., were instrumental in raising funds for the benefit of the children of ‘The Paynter Home’ in Sri Lanka. We are very grateful to all of you for the effort you have put in to give us A$813 which was equivalent to Rs. 58,962.82. This amount was credited to our bank account at the Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Nuwara Eliya branch on 11th September 2006. However as the bank had not sent us an advice of this credit we were at a loss as to where this credit had come from until Mrs. Rode passed on the details. We have 34 children at the moment. Our youngest child is 4 years old and will commence school in January 2007. She is an orphan and her name is Ravathie but the older children have fondly named her Jennie. We have 16 boys and 18 girls. Three of them are in the Advanced Level class whilst 4 are in the Ordinary Level class and 2 others to sit the Ordinary Level examination in December 2007. All of them are attending school except for 2 children who were over-aged for their school grades. However, they left school as they reached the ages of 16 and 15 are now working as trainees in the HOME and FARM. I would be only too glad to communicate via e-mail. This will make it easy for me to keep you updated as well and send some pictures of the HOME. On behalf of the management, staff and children of this Home, I take this opportunity to thank you all once again for the great effort you have put in to fund this HOME. We will use this money for one of the projects to upgrade their living standards. Thank you and may God bless you all. Best regards Yours Truly Mrs. Angeline T.S. Jacobs Executive Secretary for India Christian Mission & C.E.O. The Paynter Home

Gardening with Bob... Ahhh … at last a question in ‘Silverscene’ on gardening matters, and I am happy to answer to the best of my ability. I was not sure whether this gardening column that I had been asked to write would go down well with Silverscene readers, and whether it would create any interest. Well … at least one person is interested and has asked a question. So here goes … Rowena,

Fr uit dr op in passion f r uit vines is a ver y common condit ion. I r epr oduce below an answer I have given in anot her f or um t o an ident ical quest ion as your s. The comment s below ar e good f or ot her t r ees t hat dr op f r uit as well … par t icular ly t he cit r us species, mangoes t oo, t hough passion f r uit seems t o do it mor e of t en t han ot her f r uit ing plant s. Who said gar dening was easy?

Regar ds, Bob PASSIONFRUIT Green fruit not ripening and dropping to the ground is a condition termed ‘Premature Fruit Drop’ . This is actually quite common with many fruiting trees and vines, and there are a few reasons that bring about the problem. ¾ Insufficient watering during flowering and fruit production is a primary reason. Whilst fruits DO form, the vine lacks the vigour to go through with the ripening process … particularly in the hot months when fruit begin to ripen. Competition among the fruits is said to be the reason, and it is nature’ s way of reducing such competition. Proper watering, importantly at the flowering and fruiting stage, is often the solution. Heavy watering in summer (10-15 litres per week), and half that in winter, is a good guide for the vine to perform at its best.

¾ Extremely hot, dry, windy, weather and prolonged ‘drought’ conditions will trigger fruit drop. Again, make certain the vine is well watered at these times – possibly with even more water than normal during the extreme weather.

¾ A ‘cold snap’ in the weather is another environmental factor that may lead to fruit drop.

¾ Nutrient deficiencies and - at the other end of the scale - excessive nitrogen in fertilizers too cause fruit to drop. Whilst regular fertilizing is necessary, make sure that it is a balanced fertilizer that is used – particularly in its phosphorous, potassium and magnesium content.

¾ We now come to some pests and diseases that lead to the problem of fruit drop. Severe damage by mite weakens the plant, and causes leaves and fruit to drop. Phytophthora and Septoria are two fungal diseases that affect the leaves, stems and fruit of passionfruit vines, which again lead to premature fruit drop.

If you can figure out which of the above conditions your passionfruit vine has gone through, you should then be able to work out a solution. Continued…..page 10

Readers,

Please let us know if:

you would like horticultural articles to continue you would like to ask questions you would like to suggest some gardening topics on which you would

like some information

Another question for the Gardening Guru: Bob I have heard of some way of getting rid of weeds with the use of salt and vinegar (!!). Is there such a possibility or is there some other “organic” way of eliminating weeds (other than hard labour, of course)? Regards Niranjalie Silva

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

The Karaoke and Dance night held on 11th November at the Ithaca Bowls club was a very enjoyable affair and was attended by about 90 people. The night kicked off at 7 pm as usual & very soon there were plenty of people with great voices singing their favourite songs. There were over 1500 songs to choose from and the words were displayed on a big screen and a TV monitor so that the rest could sing along as well. The MC, Egerton De Fransz, who was entertaining as usual, got everyone who wanted to sing on to the stage for their moment of fame. There were plenty of requests for dancing as well & the karaoke was stopped a few times so that every one could get on the floor & do their thing to some choice music

provided by Ruvan Dharmaratne. There were some budding singing sensations but the winners that night were Natasha Ponniah, Ramali Mendis & Asela Weerasinghe. It was encouraging to see many young people participating in the singing and dancing and enjoying the night along with the “oldies”. It was a job well done by chief organiser Herby Tucker, assisted by his good wife Lorraine, Beatrice de Fransz, Mike Bulner & Dinty Ranasinghe who provided the big screen. A big thank you to all these people and to all those others who helped on the day.

“TIME TRAVEL”! Alan and Rowena Western share with us their experiences on a recent trip back through Memory Lane. Row and I just got back from a round-the-world trip primarily to see friends and family we hadn’t seen for more years than I care to remember. A first cousin in Canada, who I last saw as a single young man, has now just retired to enjoy life with his wife, two children and their four grandchildren, none of whom I had ever met; four school friends who I hadn’t seen since we were all about sixteen years old, and other friends and family members who I last saw about twenty years ago. With only time enough to spend a few days with each of them it was fascinating to see how life and time has dealt with all of us - almost like opening a time capsule to see what life was like for people ’back in the days’. It takes some adjustment to refocus the mental image and memory you have of their faces when they were much younger, and then try to relate what is left of that to the present-day face. Time deals with us all in many different ways - with some you find yourself gasping ’My God, you don’t look any different!’ With others you have to come to terms with the fact that this person is almost a stranger to you as you struggle to find some vestige of the former looks or personality in the person standing before you - and what is their impression of you? As we age it seems that our own self-image gets sort of stuck in the late twenties/early thirties age group but, of course we must look equally as well-worn as them. How about their attitudes and outlook on life now - that carefree teenager you remember has perhaps been through more than one marriage, and now may be caught up in their own children’ s worries and difficulties in living the life of this day and age. Travelling from country to country you find that - yes people are different, but when you take away the language differences and the circumstances under which they have to live their lives, as human beings we are all very much frighteningly the same! We all tend to think of ourselves as unique but it is a bit scary to admit to yourself sometimes that the person you are talking to could easily be yourself in another guise. Although there is a certain amount of glamour to air travel, standing in a queue juggling your passport, boarding pass and hand luggage from hand to hand is a great leveller, and when it comes to putting the contents of your pockets and your shoes in a tray to be x-rayed at the security check you lose some dignity. To cap it all what little dignity you may have left is whisked away when you walk through the metal detector gate and then get frisked by a security guard - why is it always you who seems to get pulled over for special attention? The old saying that you should never go back is true. The old haunts that you knew and loved are now haunted by new people and you are the stranger just visiting. That beautiful, comfortable cinema you spent so many hours in as a teenager is now a health club or a furniture store, the tuck shop you used to visit after school is now a video hire shop and that lovely, elegant old house on the corner that you used to admire as a child, is now being demolished to make way for another plain and functional block of apartments - even some of the old pubs are now the local McDonalds. You almost weep for what used to be. There are far too many people and none of them know you, and when you do come across something that is still exactly the same you touch it almost reverently as if it were a shrine. I guess it really is a shrine - a shrine to your lost youth..... Hey ho, just as well the visit was only a short one leaving you little time to dwell on what used to be or you might end up quite down in the mouth about it.

But let's talk of joy - the joy of reliving some of those fond memories with those you share them with, and making some new memories as you spend time with people you were fond of and now find a new depth to your old relationship in sharing the stories of your life experiences over the years. Talk about swapping potted life stories - trying to fill in all the missing gaps in each others lives and then trying to remember all the names as they introduce you to their families and friends who have just called in to meet the visitors from down-under. The inevitable geography lesson as you try to explain that Brisbane is not a suburb of Sydney and that you could fit the UK seven times into Queensland alone. 'Yeah, well Brisbane is about half way up on the right hand side of a map of Australia'.

Our trip took us to the USA and Canada for the first time, to England including North Wales and Cornwall and , of course London. Over to Copenhagen, Paris, Lourdes, Vienna and Cyprus and then to see the wonders of Egypt. What a contrast between Cairo and Singapore - the last stop on our itinerary! Finally back in good old “BrisVegas” we found that seven weeks travelling produced four hours of video and about 700 digital photos - thank God for digital - who could afford to print out that many rolls of film? Been home for three weeks and we're still trying to decide which photos we ought to print!!

Yes it's nice to go travelling - it broadens the mind, adds five kilos to your weight, and empties your wallet, but you wouldn't be dead for quids! Alan Western
