BEAUTY

P revention is better than cure, and thanks to the extensive range of products on the market - designed

specifically to delay and fight the signs of ageing - holding back the years might not be as hard as you’d think.

It’s not just about products though, living a healthy lifestyle, eating a diet that’s rich in vitamins A, C and E (found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables) and omega-3 fatty acids (from fish, nuts and seeds) will boost skin from the inside out.

And what’s more, remember to keep smiling - it’s an instant face-lift. After all, as fashion designer Coco Chanel famously said, ‘Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.’

In your late 20s and early 30s…

It might seem early, but it pays to establish a skin care regime that will aid in the prevention of visible ageing signs in later life. Remember to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays, by using a specially formulated day cream that is guaranteed to safeguard your skin.

Always cleanse, tone, exfoliate (image 1) and moisturise (image 2) to eradicate dull patches and ensure a healthy, youthful glow.

In your late 30s and early 40s…

Once you hit your mid thirties you may start to notice the earliest signs of ageing - such

as laughter lines, frown lines or wrinkles around the lips.

Use an eye cream (image 3) daily to treat and postpone the onset of fine lines around sensitive areas and select a richly moisturising night cream to keep both face and neck thoroughly nourished.

It’s essential at this time in your life to commit to paying real attention to looking after your skin, so as to ensure it looks younger and more youthful in years to come.

In your late 40s and early 50s…

Work on any established wrinkles with targeted products for your problem areas (image 4).

Active anti-ageing ingredients are a must at this age, so look for products that contain high levels of antioxidants, retinol or peptides to protect your skin from free-radical damage.

Brightening ingredients help to boost radiance and will improve the appearance of mature skin.

Try both serums and creams to establish which works best for you.

In your late 50s and early 60s…

A dull complexion is common in your 60s. Owing to a build-up of dead skin cells due to the skin’s inability to renew itself, the surface can be left looking uneven and lifeless. So regular exfoliation is essential (image 5).

17 Please mention The Hampton Viewer when responding to adverts

Not only will this reveal fresher looking skin, but you will also be creating the ideal base on which to apply your anti-ageing products, ensuring they are absorbed deep into the layers of your dermis. Though be careful not to scrub or use an exfoliant that is too harsh, as this can damage thinning skin already suffering from a reduction in collagen and elastin fibres.

In your late 60s, early 70s and

beyond…

As skin is much more demanding at this time of life, it can be hard to manage dry skin and the more established signs of ageing. It is essential to build on the routine you have established throughout previous years by continuing to spend time putting back what ageing takes out.

Use intensive and targeted anti-ageing day creams and try face oils at night that will penetrate deep into the skin to provide much needed hydration (image 6).

The Whinge A Rush of Water to the Hand

Y ou may have seen a story in the national press con-cerning a woman who

found her wedding ring after 16 years when it was growing on a carrot. It reminded me of a simi-lar event that once happened to me:

My wife and I were fed up with the ineffective dribble that was being produced by the mixer-tap shower. My wife “had been thinking” – those 3 little words that every man dreads to hear. So I was tasked with installing an electric shower to improve the performance. For the uninitiated this involved a considerable amount of work; I had an electrician to do the necessary wiring but the plumbing was down to me. This means taking a pipe off the rising main to feed the shower, this is the main pipe that brings water into the house and then throughout most of the cold wa-ter systems – depending on the age of the existing plumbing.

I’d located the best place for me to take a feed – in the airing cupboard next to the bathroom. In order to speed things up I constructed all the pipe work from the shower fitting through to the airing cup-board, the only thing left to do was to cut the rising main and fit the shower pipe which shouldn’t take too long.

All the fittings and tools were ready and laid out on top of the cistern. I’d turned off the mains water valve and opened a tap to make sure the mains was off. Just a few things to finish off before I was ready to do the cut – check and check again just to be on the safe side. This is a lesson that most diy-ers learn fairly early on; there are many tales of making the cut only to realise that you’ve measured the inside and needed to fit on the outside or gluing everything to-gether only to find the construction won’t fit through the front door.

Whilst doing my final checks my wife called up “there’s no water in the tap, I want to make a cup of tea”

“OK, just switch the tap on un-der the sink, fill the kettle and turn the tap off again” I replied.

“Have you finished?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve turned the tap off?”

“Yes.”

By now you know where this is going: lesson 2 – check it your-self, just in case.

I made the cut in the rising main only to release a jet of spurting

water. What was going on, the valve was closed, water can’t be coming this quickly from just what remained in the pipe? Instinct took over and I stuck my finger in the spume like a modern day little Dutch boy. We all remember that story, but I now have my doubts that it was ever true, because I can tell you that water is cold, very, very cold. Barely seconds passed before my finger was getting too cold for me to bear it. I shouted for assistance from my wife who rushed up the stairs to my aid.

“Get me the connector from the cistern, quickly. There’s a connector and some nuts and olives.”

She brought them with all haste and I started to fit them urgently. But you know what it’s like when you try to do things in a hurry, it doesn’t always go smoothly. Things don’t quite fit properly and I’m getting soaked by the spewing fountain, the airing cupboard is becoming very wet and I just can’t get this *@!£$ing olive to fit. Why won’t it fit, what is going on. I know it should be a tight fit but it seems to be just a millimetre too small. It will sit on top of the pipe but I can’t get it to slide onto it.

Motoring

T HERE are some eco-warriors out there who

believe the humble automobile is the devil on

wheels. But in recent years car manufacturers

have worked hard to change the car’s planet

killing image with hybrids, electric vehicles and

fuel-sipping eco models like VW’s Bluemotion

range.

But what if you can’t afford a new car and still want to go green? Well, fortunately there are ways you can cut your carbon footprint – and it doesn’t have to mean walking! Simply thinking about how and when you use your car, the products you use and the way you look after your vehicle can make a real difference. Planning trips to coincide with one another, not going out especially to buy fuel, and sharing a commute can all help. But it’s not just about how and when you use your motor – just as important is the way it’s looked after. Here are our practical tips to make car ownership greener.

CHANGE YOUR STYLE

No one likes to be told how to drive – but if there’s one guaranteed way of slashing your CO2 output it’s by changing your driving habits. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking, drive with the windows up to avoid drag and remove any unused extras such as roof racks. Stick to the speed limits and change up at the most economical point – roughly 2,500rpm for petrols and 2,000rpm for diesels. Think about switching off the engine if you’re going to be stationary for more than two minutes.

IN A LATHER

A clean car might be a pretty car, but do you need to do it every week? If you really must spruce it up, use a bucket and sponge instead of a hose to save water or cut it out completely with a waterless cleaning agent like Miracle Drywash which lifts dirt with a cloth.

SPRING CLEAN

Carrying around your golf clubs and a set of tools can seriously inflate your fuel consumption – 100kg of unnecessary extra weight can increase it by as much as six per cent. Have a clean out of any unneeded kit in your car and stash it away in your garage instead.

CHECK IT OUT

When your car is serviced regularly it’s not only less likely to break down, but it’ll be more environmentally friendly too. Good quality oil, fresh spark plugs and air filters are all essential – neglect any and your fuel consumption will be worse and your carbon footprint higher.

PLAN AHEAD Using sat nav is not only a great way to make motoring less stressful, but it’s green too! By avoiding getting lost and taking the most direct route to your destination you’ll cut fuel bills. Use one with traffic jam detecting capability and you’ll cut CO2 even more.

HOME ALONE By servicing your car at home you can ensure all parts used are recycled. Fluids, such as waste oil and antifreeze, should be taken to a specific recycling centre. Starter motors, alternators and some bulbs can also be recycled. Check tyre pressures as part of the service, and periodically in between – correctly inflated rubber saves fuel.

AT YOUR SERVICE

Even things as simple as insurance, breakdown cover & vehicle inspections can be green. The Environmental Transport Association provides all of them in a carbon neutral way.

GREEN OPTION Try a fuel saving tyre – such as the Michelin Energy or Firestone Fuel Saver – which claim to reduce fuel consumption by adding silica to their compounds. You could try ‘green’ cleaning products, like the Car Plan EcoCar range which offers a host of environmentally-friendly products derived from vegetable & plant extracts.

A few more choice phrases before I decide that the olive needs closer inspec-tion, I don’t have any spares to hand be-cause they are all in the garage. Why would I need spares anyway I’d got eve-rything ready and it all seemed to be ok. So maybe the pipe’s got a dint in it when I cut it and I might need to cut it again.

Of course when I checked the olive I found that it was actually quite lucky that it didn’t fit because if it had it would have ended up being the most expensive olive ever and my wedding ring would have ended up being a piece of cheep brass!

The post trauma enquiry revealed that my wife had turned off the kitchen tap after filling the kettle, but not the valve under the sink and I had taken off my wedding ring and placed it on the cistern for safe keeping. Obviously my wife had followed the exact instructions that I gave her: she filled the kettle and then turned off the tap and later brought me every-thing she found on the cistern.

My wife learned what an olive is, but I learned lesson 3 for diy-ers that day: be very explicit and precise when giving in-structions because if there is any room for misunderstanding if will be exploited.

W elcome stargazers. This month I have 2 images for you to ponder, so I need to keep the

words short. The first is at 0330 on the morning of Feb 13th and shows Saturn above the Moon almost at the same level as Spica in Virgo. The apparent magnitude of Saturn will be about 0.52 which is very similar to Betelgeuse in Orion and brighter than Spica. Mars is also visible with an apparent magni-tude of -0.86.

The second image is with the centre south-west and shows Jupiter, Venus and the Moon all very close together at 1930 on Feb 25th. During January you will have been able to see Venus for an hour or so after sunset and also, by turning yourself anti-clockwise a little also Jupiter, but this is the closest you will have been able to see them together. With the Moon just in its fourth day it means it will not detract from your vision of these two planets.

If you now face due east at about the same height above the horizon as the Moon and Venus you will see Mars with an apparent magnitude of -1.14. It’s not as bright as Jupiter (-2.19) or Venus (-4.19) but is slightly less bright than the brightest star, Sirius in Canis Major with an apparent magnitude of -1.47. Magnitudes are derived from the ancient Greek system of classification according to 6 degrees of brightness, with 1 being the brightest and 6 the faintest. This

system has remained in place

but has been adjusted in modern times. Venus with an apparent magnitude of -4.19 is the brightest object in the night sky (apart from the Moon), Jupiter second brightest & so on. Happy watching!

Local Information — Local Information — Local Information

G reetings from Hampton Community Church. A big thank you to every-one who attended our outdoor carol

service over Christmas. Over 300 people at-tended and many were blessed with ham-pers, panto tickets and turkey. It was a wonderful fun night and such a joy seeing so many people from the community celebrat-ing the reason for the season, Jesus Christ. We will be aiming to hold this event each

year & we hope you will join us again this year.

But Christmas is so last year, it is Valentine’s Day that is our highlight in February. The celebration of love. The bible teaches us that only three things will remain Faith, Hope and Love and the greatest of these is love. In fact God says He is love and we can discover His bible is His love letter to us. Not a message of judgement and condemnation but a letter of acceptance and hope. He has demon-

strated His love to us not with flowers but the ultimate sacrifice, His death on the cross in

our place. You are His valentine this year!

With valentines in mind we have an event coming up on the 14th March at 7:30 called Date Night. This will be held at Maharanis Restaurant in Hampton Hargate. It is aimed at couples and includes a short 30 minute relationship class to provoke conversation followed by a meal in the restaurant. The cost is £20 per couple not including drinks. If you would like to book a ticket please

contact the church office on 01733 561691.

We continue to meet at 6pm on Sunday Nights at the Hampton Vale Community Cen-tre. We now have a children’s class that takes place at the same time which makes this a great experience for the whole family. We

would love you to visit us.

Much love, Pastor Jon Featherstone

Jermiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for
