Local Art at

The Gallery

T he Gallery in Woodston was offi-cially opened by the Mayor of Peterborough Paula Thacker ear-

lier this month and is now open to the public.

The Gallery is a totally independent

showroom specifically aimed at

creative and innovative art.

It provides a one stop shopping experi-ence for people looking to purchase works created by local artists. There is a host of affordable art, stunning pottery, mosaic glass, bronze sculptures, oils, textile art, prints and cards.

The Gallery offers a great opportunity to shop local, as well as finding that personal and unique Christmas gift and

with 1000 square foot of space you will find pieces of work starting from as little as £10, ensuring that there is something for all art lovers, even with the smallest of budgets.

All works on display are for sale with clearly labelled details of artist’s name, medium used and price and come with a certificate of Authenticity to vali-date its uniqueness. And if you can’t find that exact piece that you are look-

ing for you can commission your very own unique piece of work through di-rect access to the artist.

In addition to exhibitions local artists will be giving demonstrations of their own work during the ‘live artist’ sessions and local tutors will provide adult learning workshops to small groups. A full pro-gramme will be available in January.

The Gallery is open from Wednesday to Friday 11am until 6pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm and outside these hours we welcome private group viewings by appointment. It is located at 3 Aston Business Park, Shrewsbury Avenue, (Behind the Party Shop), Woodston, Peterborough PE2 7BF. Only 1.5 miles

from the City Centre and train station. The Citibus 1 operates a 10 minutes ser-vice between Shrewsbury Avenue and Town.

Admission is FREE and there is

ample free parking

For £20 annual subscription you will be personally updated about new artists exhibiting at The Gallery and receive information about open evenings, launches, workshops and live artists ses-sions. Please email [email protected]

or telephone 01733 306246.

The Whinge Hot Chocolate and the Temptations

J ust in case you’d missed the update, it’s Christmas very soon. So it’s about time you had at least thought about what

presents you would like Santa to put in your stocking! It’s also about time you started shopping for all those presents for your friends and family if you haven’t already. If you’re like me then you get Christmas over with each year and then resolve to get things sorted earlier next year. This resolve carries on until about October when you think “I really must get myself organized and get some Christmas shopping done”. You may even go so far as to do some before October is over. This year my wife had bought the Christmas chocolates before half-term on the understanding that “they remain unopened until Christmas”.

To be fair, as I write this they are still on top of the freezer, unopened. However, there have been copious amounts of other chocolates in the house that have been consumed. My wife (you may start to notice a theme) bought bucket loads of euphemistically named fun size bars ready for Halloween and then we went out for the night so both her and my daughter have just had to consume them – otherwise they’ll still be left at Christmas when they open the Christmas chocolates and then that’ll be too much chocolate in the house. I’m sure there is some logic in there somewhere but I am struggling to work it out.

You’ll also notice that I say my wife and daughter are consuming the chocolate not I. This is because, of course, I’m not eating chocolate under my new health regime – in case you’ve missed that too; just what have you been doing for the last few months, don’t you read this page each month? I am now 8 months without chocolate (now I feel like I’m at an AA or rehab meeting).

All this talk of chocolate is making me feel a tad peckish! But, anyway I wasn’t really going to keep mentioning chocolate but it leads me to my whinge.

A neighbour stopped me in the street a week or so ago and mentioned something that I wish to share. She has also been losing weight and along with her friend they’ve been doing lots of walking. They go out regardless of weather and cover a fair distance, they are also following a healthy eating plan, although a rival one to mine so I shan’t mention the name. It’s working for them and they have both lost significant weight & are feeling much better for it also.

You may remember a few months ago I shared with you the unwritten and universal rules of slimming clubs of all varieties, well I need to make an addition to those rules but it’s not for the attendees, but for their friends and families.

Rule Five: For Families and Friends

If you know someone who is trying to lose weight tell them how good they are looking and how much weight they appear to have lost, things along the lines of “Oooo you can see it in your face” and “aren’t you looking slim” are appropriate acknowledgements. However, “you look so much better than you did” and “your backside is nowhere near as huge as it was” are inapposite tributes and may solicit a grumpy attitude and possibly even a slap if you don’t move quickly enough – and you may now have to move much faster than you once did. The point is if you know they are trying to lose weight then give them platitudes, because they are very much appreciated.

A word of caution though: if you’re not absolutely certain that they are trying to lighten the load it’s best to err on the side of caution and not say anything otherwise you might earn yourself a slap. I should add to this and say that if you think a friend may have prepared well for winter do not under any circumstances ask when the baby is due. Before you all start being too incredu-lous I have a friend who said exactly this to another friend – you may now smirk; I did!

CELEBRATE YOUR SPECIAL MEMORIES OF

LOVED ONES WITH SUE RYDER’S LIGHTS OF LOVE

S ue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is inviting

people this Christmas to celebrate

their special memories of loved ones

and share them with others by taking part in

its annual Lights of Love campaign.

The hospice will host a Lights of Love event at the hospice in Peterborough on Sunday 18th December at 5.30pm to give people the opportunity to celebrate their most cherished memories.

Sue Ryder’s Lights of Love is an annual cam-paign which gives people the chance to make a dedication in honour of a person who is special to them. Julie Laithwaite at Sue Ryder comments: “Lights of Love” gives people the opportunity to come together to remember and make a special dedica-tion to a person who has touched or in-spired their life. Many people find it difficult to cope with bereavement especially at Christmas when family and friends come together to celebrate”.

A recent survey conducted by Sue Ryder* revealed that over half of people (59%) choose to celebrate the life of a loved one at Christmas by sharing their fondest memo-ries with friends and family. Results also showed that 61% find it helpful to talk openly about their feelings and memories of their loved ones as a way of coping with bereavement during the festive season

Julie added: “Memories are forever and they are a precious gift. It is important to take the time to remember the people who have played a vital role in our lives loving us, helping us to achieve our full potential and sharing with us our happy and sad mo-ments”.

TV presenter Kate Thornton, a keen sup-porter of Sue Ryder, says, “I'm delighted to support Sue Ryder’s Lights of Love cam-paign this Christmas. It's a wonderful way for people to support each other and

come together for a magical evening to remember loved ones, at what can often be a difficult and emotional time of year. "I've seen first-hand the wonderful care and compassion that Sue Ryder's staff provide at their hospices for people living with com-plex and end-of-life conditions. They do an amazing job and I would urge people eve-rywhere to support the charity's Lights of Love campaign, either through attending one of their Christmas services or by making a donation”.

If you would like to receive more informa-tion about Lights of Love or request a Lights of Love pack please contact Julie

Laithwaite on 01733 330060. People keen to dedicate a Light of Love will be encour-aged to give a donation of their choice to Sue Ryder. Everyone making a dedication and a donation will receive a Lights of Love Christmas star on which they can write a personal message before hanging it on their tree at home or sending it back to the hospice. People attending the Lights of Love event at Thorpe Hall will also have their dedication entered in the Book of Celebrations available at the hospice.

W hen I first heard about ‘CACI ULTRA’ - non surgical face and body lift, my first thoughts

were, does it really work?

Well, I thought I would have a go and made my way to Pure Health & Beauty in Glapthorn, nr. Oundle, a 15 minute drive, for a trial treatment. It was a

beautiful day and I found the drive a pleasant, relaxing experience. The sa-lon is based in a picturesque rural area.

Before arriving at the salon I was a little nervous not knowing what to expect. When I did arrive at Pure Health & Beauty, I was greeted by Jayne the owner and Becky the Beauty therapist and was immediately put at ease. As we discussed the treatment and what it would entail, I knew I was in good

hands. We went through a thorough medical questionnaire to make sure I was suitable for the treatment.

The treatment comes in four stages:

1. Ultrasonic Peeling - this cutting edge

alternative to micro-dermabrasion gives an instantly clearer, smoother and healthier complexion. 2. Microcurrent - this works to firm and

tone sagging facial muscles to give a more defined facial contour.

3. Ultrasound - this is used to stimulate blood supply to the skin, thus boosting hydration levels.

4. Wrinkle Comb & Light Therapy - this is completely safe, painless and non-invasive that instantly ‘plump out’ wrin-kles and fine lines.

The whole session was painless and sur-

prisingly very relaxing.

After just the one treatment, I could

definitely see a difference. However, I have been told that after approx. 10 treatments there would be a dramatic, visible result - and all without the need for surgery!!!

I enjoyed my experience at Pure Health and Beauty and will definitely be mak-ing another visit very soon. If you fancy a relaxing, pampering experience in beautiful, luxurious surroundings, this is the place to visit. Hurry and book

NOW - some days in December are already fully booked.

In addition to this unique and latest pio-neering treatment, Pure Health & Beauty also offer all beauty and holistic treatments from waxing to reflexology in this beautiful, relaxing salon.

Also, if you are looking for the perfect

Christmas gift, you can find some great

gifts presented in a lovely gift box for all

ages starting at £5. Gift Vouchers are

also available.

The History of

Christmas Carols

T he tradition of Christmas carols hails back as far as the thirteenth century. Carols were originally communal

songs sung during celebrations such as harvest tide as well as Christmas. It was only later that carols were sung in church, and to be specifically associated with Christmas.

In England, and some other countries (i.e. Poland and Bulgaria), there is a tradition of Christmas carolling (earlier known as was-sailing), in which groups travel from house to house, singing carols, for which they are often rewarded with money, mince pies, or a glass of an appropriate drink.

The word wassail comes from a Saxon ex-pression ‘waeshael’ meaning ‘to your health.’ The wassail bowl was very com-mon in England at Christmas, and great fanfare and ceremony was made while drinking from it. As years went by, wassail came to mean any sort of Christmas toast.

SILENT NIGHT

One of the most beloved Christmas carols, Silent Night, originated in the tiny village of Oberndorf in the Austrian mountains. The story goes that the day before Christmas Eve in 1818, Father Joseph Mohr, pastor of Saint Nicholas church, discovered that the church organ was broken meaning there would be no music for his midnight mass.

Taking a verse he had written two years previously he travelled several miles through the snow to his friend Franz Gru-ber, a school teacher and musician, and Gruber set it to music. At midnight mass, Father Mohr and Gruber, accompanied only by Gruber’s guitar, sang the gentle song, “Silent Night, Holy Night,” for the first time.

"StilleNacht! HeiligeNacht!" can easily be called the world's best-loved Christmas carol. It has been translated into nearly

300 languages and dialects. Its message of heavenly peace sets the theme for Christmas celebrations around the globe.

The song was sung simultaneously in English and German by troops during the Christmas truce of 1914, as it was one of the few carols that soldiers on both sides of the frontline knew.

Silent night, holy night

All is calm all is bright

Round yon virgin Mother and Child

Holy infant so tender and mild

Sleep in heavenly peace

Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night,

Shepherds quake at the sight.

Glories stream from heaven afar,

Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia;

Christ our Saviour is born;

Christ our Saviour is born.

Silent night, holy night,

Son of God, love's pure light

Radiant beams from Thy holy face,

With the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth;

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

In The Night Sky #10

S o most of November was a bit of a wash out, but we did get to see the Moon and Jupiter very close to each

other on the 8th and 9th. December holds a few early presents for

the night watcher; hopefully, we’ll have some better evenings so we get to see more than we did last month.

Towards the middle of the month there is a good opportunity to view Mercury, on the 14th look south-east at about 07:50, 15 min-utes before the Sun rises. If you are going to use binoculars or a telescope be very care-ful because the Sun will be about to rise and don’t ever point any type of lens (including your eye) directly at the Sun. If you miss Mercury you’ll get another chance around the same place on the 15th only a couple of minutes earlier (and the Sun will be a little later). This pattern continues until the 18th when Mercury rises at 07:41 and the Sun at 08:10, by the 21st they start getting closer together again until by the 29th the Sun is just a couple of minutes behind Mercury which rises at 08:12, by this time any realistic op-portunity for viewing has gone for now.

On the 10th the Moon will rise at 15:47, just a few minutes after the Sun sets (15:44) and it will rise in eclipse. We should be able to see almost all of the eclipse but not for very long, the last time we had a lunar eclipse around the Winter Solstice the Tump offered a good view because of the height, but that was first thing in the morning and

the Moon was north-west (21st December 2010). This time the Moon will be rising in the north-east as the Sun sets in the south-west so the Tump might not offer the best view because it might be obscured by Serpen-tine Green. A visit before the event might be necessary but I think the top end of the Tesco car park somewhere near the stairs to the Premier Inn might provide enough height.

Another highlight for December is the Germinids meteor shower which will be visi-ble from the 6th to the 19th with the best shows on the 13th and the 14th. This shower produces up to 60 multi-coloured meteors per hour at its peak. The Germinids are con-sidered by many to be the best meteor showers. You can find them radiating from Gemini and it’s best to look after midnight, unfortunately the Moon is just a few days past full so it will be quite bright but should still only obscure only the faintest meteors. The image shows where to look relative to the Moon the extreme right of the image is south and left is east, Orion is also easy to spot and is quite visible even in the brightly lit areas around Hampton. The image shows the night sky at 00:30 on the 14th.

As always if you have any comments or questions just send an email to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to help. Happy viewing,

The Nightwatchman
