By Charles SercombeThe city council met on

May 28, and all coun-cilmembers were in atten-dance.From the public, Susan

Dunn said the councilshould fire the city managerand his assistant to savemoney.“If you’re going to start

cutting things, I’d rather seemore police officers,” shesaid. In a review of city bills,

Councilmember Cathie Gor-don questioned a $30charge for coffee. It was ex-plained that the coffee wassupplied for a meeting withcity merchants.Councilmember Robert

Zwolak attempted for a sec-ond time to have the posi-tion of city manager posted.Councilmember Gordon

questioned who would be in-terested in applying sincethe city will likely be underthe control of a state-ap-pointed emergency man-ager in the coming weeks.Councilmember Tom

Jankowski said posting thejob depends on whether Act-ing City Manager KyleTertzag plans on leavingwhen his contract is up onJuly 15.Tertzag said he would like

to “stay on and be a part ofthe solution.”Councilmember Zwolak

proposed a council reviewof Tertzag, but questioned

how long it will take.Councilmember Gordon

said a review of Tertzag isan “exercise in futility”since an emergency man-ager will soon take controlof the city.“What’s the point here?”

she said.Mayor Karen Majewski

pointed out that the coun-cil’s previous two searchesfor a city manager resultedin the council rejecting allthe candidates.Majewski advised holding

off on a search. In the vote to post the job,

only Councilmember Zwolakvoted in favor. The council was unani-

mous in bringing on a sec-ond K-9 dog for the PoliceDepartment. In another police-related

matter, the council agreedto allow the department tojoin Macomb County’s anti-terrorist unit. Police ChiefMax Garbarino said joiningthe unit will allow the de-partment to apply for moregrants.Acting City Manager

Tertzag said the alliance willalso act like a mutual aidpackage.

What is our City Council up to thesedays? We have the scoop and thehighlights – as well as the lowlights –of the latest council meeting.

dictorian for the class of

2013, achieved a GPA of

4.002. Nadim is ambitious

and takes advantage of eve-

ry opportunity. Despite the

fact that he won class

tions, he's wide-awake

when it's time for class dis-

cussions and tests.

He took many

challenging courses during

his four years at HHS, in-

cluding AP physics B, AP

physics C, and AP literature

and composition.

Nadim is involved

in Student Council, National

Honor Society, Student Ac-

botics allowed him to be-

come Vice President of me-

chanics and lead program-

mer. Nadim is also a youth

school, he is the secretary of

MUNA.

He believes motiva-

tion from friends and family

led to his success. When

asked about his thoughts on

high school, Syed Nadim re-

plied, "I feel like I'm going to

miss high school. It was a

great four years. I was able to

grow a lot as a person and

make some lifelong friends."

He currently plans to study at

University of Michigan-Ann

He has high hopes and dreams and his goal is to work with com-puter developers to make computers available for un-derprivileged children in the world.

Becoming the co-salutatorian can be a tough job especially if you’ve only been in this country for two years. Coming to a new country, MD Fazle Chow-dhury proved that you can achieve anything as long as you give it your all. Fazle believes the challenges he faced brought him to where he is now. He states, “I follow my heart and learn my lessons as I live my life.” He is Presi-dent and Founder of the Social Awareness Club. His fellow classmates describe him as smart, punctual, and reliable. Laughter, excitement, and happiness filled the Hamtramck High School audi-

torium as the graduating seniors received their National Honor Society stoles. As the

National Honor Society advisor, Ms. Georgieska, called the names of the seniors and

Principal Westrate put the stoles around their necks, it felt like all the hard work paid

off. The spot light was shining on the senior’s faces, the principal and staff were all

smiling, and the crowd was full of proud faces. Senior Thanjila Uddin said, “The can-

dle light ceremony made everything seem a whole lot more elegant.” Starting off the

year with a new NHS advisor was a little difficult but National Honor Society members

managed to work together and fight through every obstacle. Senior Ahamima Akther

said, “NHS taught me how to be involved in my community.”

The delightful looks on peoples’ faces filled the room as proud staff wel-

comed the parents and guests. Students sat together as a rush of excitement ran

through their body. 2.4 million dollars worth of scholarships were offered to the

class of 2013! The HUSS scholarship, Volunteering scholarship, Rotary Club schol-

arship, and Varsity Athletic scholarship were given as a surprise to students. Stu-

dents had a stunned, blissful look on their faces as they were called to receive their

scholarships. Finally at the end of the ceremony, students got together smiling,

laughing, and overjoyed taking pictures with one another. Omar Algehaim said,

"Winning the Athletic Scholarship was the last thing I expected." Hani Nasher said,

"Man, it was surreal! It was a feeling that you don’t really know how to explain.

Congrats to the other winners, go Cosmos."

Kevin Ashford, the man behind the class of 2013 since the very beginning, has enjoyed his time with this dynamic class. Together with the officers, he has put on successful fundraisers such as the carwashes, the bake sales, and a successful home-coming dance; but not many people know him outside of school.

Mr. Ashford attended Wayne State University; he majored in psychology and minored in business administration. But after his sister passed away, Mr. Ashford had taken on the responsibility of his niece and nephew, so he had to go back to school and he pursued the field of education for a flexible schedule. Mr. Ashford now lives with his nephew, great-nephew, and a dog named Lucy; and he also owns a beautiful, red Mustang. He enjoys his life with his family as well as his students.

The class of 2013 has come and gone but, wouldn’t be anywhere without him they’ve grown and learned together, and will forever have an impact on each other. He wishes the class the best of luck and success.

Behind every mask lies a princess, eagerly waiting for what they would later come to realize was one of the best nights of their lives.

HHS had its second all girls prom; April 20th at the Gates of Columbus. Over 100 girls and their guests attended and definitely left with amazing memories. What was thought to be another successful dance, turned out to be a spectacular ball! The masquerade theme really made these girls feel like princesses. Also treated like royalty by receiving goodie bags at the end of the night, filled with cosmetics.

Everyone danced, and danced, and danced till the clock struck 11. Aside from the cool music that was being played, there was plenty of food from chicken and rice, to the kabobs, spinach pies and rolls, and the unlimited hummus! Party doesn’t stop there! Also the professional photographer and henna artist made the night even more memorable.

Of course Noha Al-Shauweyh, Shymeshia Williams, Amina Bilic, Farjana Begum, Precious France, Monika Tipuric, and Dola Malik are to thank for all their hard work and dedication that was put into this project. Also big thanks to Mrs. Delekta, Ms. Reith, Mrs. Kurtovic, Mrs. Bilbesi, Ms. Kroon, Ms. Parker, Mrs. Gjorgjevska, Mrs. Lala, Mrs. Youmans, Mrs. Greib for the helping hand and their efforts. A very big thanks to the princess prom encourag-ing advisor Mrs. Pabst for guidance. The night couldn’t possibly end without crowning some girls to royalty. All girls were allowed to run for prom court! The winners were, Soha Al-Shauweyh, crowned Freshmen Duchess. Ayesha Begum, crowned Sophomore Dutchess. Jawaria Sarfraz, crowned Junior Princess. Monika Tipuric crowned Senior Princess. And Noha Alshawey crowned as the Senior Queen. The creators of the princess project last year hoped that their creation would become a tradition in Hamtramck High School, well their wish came true! Another successful all girl’s prom. And the creators of this year’s princess project only hope for next year’s one to be just as astounding.

As we approach the end of senior year, feeling that everything is amiss,

let us engage in a train of thought, get you to reminisce.

Four years back, we walked through the high school doors, discomposed,

walking back on forth through the hallway, where our classes were, we didn't know.

We didn't know.....,

We didn't know how we would fit a backpack in the locker,

how we would "fit in" the school,

how to make the right first impression.

School wasn’t what we expected,

But, we were given the wrong impression, watching the seniors have fun and savor their final year.

We mistakenly tried to follow their lead and have fun.

Forgetting we had three more years of hard work that needed to be done......

Three more years...

Sophomore year was definitely the year of change;

from the new principal, Ms. Westrate, to the clothing that represents us.

We indeed didn't agree with it all but, weren't scared of something different....

Our bond as a class grew even stronger, as the years progressed, building great things like the class float.

But, most importantly, we kept our class close, because what's a class without friends?

Like wearing glasses without a lens; we would be blind to what's ahead, junior year.....

Junior year...

Time to get to work, all funny business set aside.

We had to hit the books, study, unlock the potential inside.

But, not for a brief moment; we had to learn how to cherish it and hold it.

Take the ACT with confidence, and set the foundation for our future.

Not giving up after the first test score, because we were told it couldn't hurt you.

So much work had been done, it seemed Junior year had gone to waste.

But after high school, it would be knowledge that would comfort us in a new place, college.

Before we think of that let us get back to senior year!!

Senior year...

Half way into it now, it seems we haven't aged.

In the great words of Two Chainz, we’ll take two minutes to “look back at it."

Then you will see just how much we have matured and the "class acts" we have come to be.

Like fine wine or cheese, we’ve matured.

Becoming greater with age, making things happen, and being reliable are now what define us as adults.

We choreographed a pep rally, the likes of which no underclassmen had ever seen.

Full of originality and fun, it's HARD not to love our class.

But, before we leave, and notice that the years have indeed come to pass,

we leave you with all the pride that comes with being a Hamtramck High School Student.

It's more than just a title; it's a part of you.

It's your home away from home.

Someplace you can always come back to and visit.

Class of 2013, YOU dreamed it, lived it, and now remember it.

David Farver: Last day seeing a 100 people that I would NEVER see again. It was at the Masonic Temple.

Elijah Temple: It was the first year they held graduation at Ford Field.

Mr. Katopodis: Walking across the stage on a football field.

Mrs. Tabakovic: I graduated with 666 people and graduation took more than 2 and half hours.

Mr. Cartwright: I graduated with 23 people and it took about 15 minutes.

Ms. Hanlon: My father almost didn't come to my graduation because I dyed my hair black.

Ms. Delekta and Mrs. Janiczek: We graduated with a dozen red roses and wore all white.

Mrs. Molnar: I graduated from Ford Auditorium and I didn't cry.

Ms. Barnett: Mom embarrassed me by crying.

Ms. Morreale: I felt grateful towards the teachers that inspired me and felt sad because I know in college I wouldn’t see most

of the students anymore.

anti-bullying campaign in allschools. Teachers, students, administrators and restora-tive practices coordinatorshave held “community build-ing circles” where bullyingprevention, how to handle so-cial situations, role playingand recognizing the signs ofbullying are discussed. Theultimate goal of the “circles”

is that students learn practi-cal skills to foster harmonywithin the school and thecommunity.Research shows that a stu-

Kudos to the city counciland acting city manager forworking out a budget forthis year that actually in-cludes a surplus of$18,000.That’s pretty remarkable

considering the city isabout to be taken over by astate-appointed emergencymanager because of a $3.4million deficit.Despite the ability of the

council to get this year’sbudget in order, theymissed a golden opportu-nity to raise extra revenueand begin to whittle downthe deficit. The council rejected a

proposal by Acting CityManager Kyle Tertzag topass on the city’s bill forstreet lights to propertyowners. Tertzag suggesteda “fee” to be charged tohomeowners to alleviate ayearly $500,000 cost tothe city.It would have been an

extra $90 a year for the av-erage homeowner, but thecouncil rejected the idea.Instead of bringing in

much needed new revenue, the council adopted abudget that needlessly cutsa position in the Commu-nity & Economic Develop-ment Department.

If anything, city officialsshould be investing in eco-nomic development – nottaking away from it.Had the council agreed to

a nominal fee they couldhave helped eliminate thedeficit and preserve a keyposition. Now, however, theCED consists of one person— its director.Of course not including a

fee to property owners isthe popular thing to do, butit’s not the responsiblething. Hopefully, the incom-ing emergency manager willdo what this council re-fuses to do: Show leader-ship.

City officials should reconsider special fees to help reduce deficit

HELP WANTED

Page 12: The Hamtramck Review6/14/13

A lengthy discussion washeld on whether to allow thecity to apply for a bank loanthat would be paid back withsummer property taxes. This type of loan is a com-

mon practice, and it’s for-mally called a TaxAnticipation Note, or TAN.Acting City Manager

Tertzag said the loan willallow the city to make anoverdue payment to thecity’s pension fund. The cityneeds to make a $2.2 mil-lion payment to the fund orit will be in default. That could mean that the

city could be sued and theamount owed placed on theproperty tax rolls for home-owners to pay.Councilmember Anam

Miah was initially against theloan, saying it was only de-laying a fix to the city’s fi-nances.Councilmember Gordon

said that borrowing moneynow will only put the city be-hind later. She suggestednot taking the loan and letthe state-appointed emer-

gency manager decide whataction to take.“I say we do nothing and

let them (state officials) dothe hard work,” Gordon said.Councilmember Mo-

hammed Hassan agreed, saying that the city will soonfind itself in a financial hole. And if the city is threatenedwith a lawsuit as a result, hesaid: “Let them sue us.”Councilmember Tom

Jankowski said this is anissue about whether the citydecides to pay its bills or notpay them.Mayor Majewski agreed,

saying the council needs tomake a decision and not“hand it off” to the state.“One way or another, this

has to get paid,” she said.At one point Councilmem-

ber Zwolak blew up at themayor, and Police Chief MaxGarbarino moved towardZwolak. Zwolak said to Gar-barino: “Get out of my face.”At that point Mayor Majew-

ski ordered Zwolak out ofthe council chamber.(Editor’s note: This could be

the first time in Hamtramck’shistory that a councilmemberwas ejected from a meeting.)In the vote to accept the

loan, all remaining coun-cilmembers voted in favor

except for CouncilmembersAbdul Algazali and Hassan. That’s it for this week.

Come back next week forpart two.
