P A G E O N E T H E H A R B O R D I T E

Dear Harbordites, In this issue I'd like to welcome and thank this years' Harbordite staff: Emily Matias, Sara Rebelo, Marisa Nunes, Vincent Decaria, Julia Fronduti and Christopher Bajouco Tavares. These grade 12 students have been volunteering their time and expertise to produce this issue of the Harbordite newsletter. I want to extend my thanks for their efforts. I’m proud of the contribution they’re making to be of service to the Harbord community. Speaking of Harbord community, in this issue we have the announcement of two newly established awards and details of the upcoming 60th reunion of the class of 1950. We encourage all Harbord alumni to keep in touch by sending us your announcements, letters, stories, anecotes, recollections, photos etc. If you have a fond Harbord memory or experience please share it with us. We’ll be pleased to publish your submissions in the Harbordite newsletter. Keep in mind that all issues of the Harbordite newsletter are always available online at www. Harbordclub. com. Spread the word to any Harbordites you are in touch with. This time of year we can look forward to events such as our CAC fair and upcoming stage performances. Please join us! Call an old friend or friends and make a date to attend. What better way to reconnect than a visit to re-experience the talent, creativity and excitement at your alma mater! On behalf of the The Harbordite Staff and myself, I hope you all had a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season and a Happy New Year! Angela Gulia The Harbordite Editor/Harbord Teacher

Thank you for your continued support. I extend an

open invitation for you to come by and visit our school any time. Please look for invitations to attend our special events this year.

From the Principal

Our Principal, Mr. Fuentes

Hello Alumni: We’re off to a great start with over 300 eager and energetic grade 9’s. Our school opening could not have been better. We honoured 174 graduates in our 117th Commencement, 95 of whom were Ontario Scholars. Thank you to the Harbord Club and Harbord Charitable Foundation for making available over 50 awards and scholarships for our graduates. Thanks also to the Club and Foundation for helping to honour over 50 award winners at our Awards’ Assembly.

The Harbord Club students along with our Archives class continue to catalogue and preserve our history. I would like to thank Syd Moscoe for his continued support in these endeavors. We are always looking for artifacts or Harbord memorabilia to showcase in our Museum. We are continuing to search for as many alumni as possible to add to our list. Please help us by spreading the word. If you know of alumni whose information we do not have, please ask them to get in contact with us or give us their information. I would like to thank Angela Gulia for stepping up and taking on the onerous task of putting together the Harbordite, which as you know is a full time job. Angela does this on top of her full time teaching responsibilities. Please encourage friends and fellow alumni to send us information so that they can be included in the Harbordite. Please remember that your alma mater is always open to you. You have an open invitation any time to come in and visit. We have been lucky to have had an increase in visits from past alumni. I thank you for having been a part of creating the legacy of this incredible school. I hope to see you soon. Let’s keep in touch.

To Whom It May Concern, My name is Vanessa Gold and over the past four years I have studied at Harbord Collegiate Institute and now continue my education at McGill University. I am returning this October for commencement and am the recipient of the Peter “Bubba” Miller Award. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Mr. Miller. At McGill, I am studying arts. As a first year student I wanted to have the opportunity to try as many things that interested me as possible. This semester I took many theoretical science courses because I may not have the opportunity to take them in the future and they do not involve math. My favourite course so far is the study of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences. In contrast, next term I am taking Introduction to Chinese Action Film. Outside of school I play double bass in a faculty symphony and have joined residence council. McGill is a fantastic school with many opportunities and I couldn’t be happier with my placement. My plan for the future is to discover a subject that I truly love and that I would want a career in. Thank you for your kind support in my academic endeavors. I truly appreciate you interest in my success. Thank you, Vanessa Gold

Induction to the U of T Sports Hall of FAME

Thank You from Vanessa Gold

Contratulations to Harbordite Monte H. Harris for being inducted into the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1954 U of T Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union Senior Track Champions. Monte attended Harbord C. I. and was a member of the graduating class of 1950 (whose 60th reunion will soon be celebrated, please see pg. 11 for details). We are very proud of Monte’s accomplishment of which he says, “I firmly believe that I achieved this very high honour because of my participation in the athletic program at HCI.” Once again… Congrats! We are proud of you!

An Inspector Calls

By J.B Priestly The Harbord Collegiate Drama Department would like to invite you to this year’s production of An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestly. The play is set in Edwardian England in 1912, one week before the Titanic sets sail. The action revolves around the upper class Birling family who are in the midst of an engagement party when the mysterious Inspector Goole arrives. The inspector has come to ask questions about the death of a young woman. Dark secrets are exposed throughout the course of the evening. J.B Priestly was a socialist and held strong beliefs about members of society being responsible to and for one another. He also had interesting theories about the passage of time and recurring events, which he explored in his “time plays”. Inspector Goole represents Priestly’s own views on socialism and the twist at the end of the play is a result of his interest in and theories on time past, present and future. Rehearsals are well under way and the Production Class has begun work on the design elements. The play will be presented March 3, 4, and 5 and we sincerely hope you will be able to join us for one of these performances.

Harbord’s own Teacher to Carry the Olympic Torch! Written by Emily Matias

Daniel Le Blanc, a dedicated Harbord teacher carried the Olympic torch on December 17th, 2009 when the torch came through Toronto. Mr. Le Blanc had the once in a life time chance to carry the torch for 300 meters from Borough Drive to the Scarborough Civic Centre. Mr. Le Blanc teaches Grade 9, 10 and 11 Math and Canadian History in French. He also teaches a course called Archives and Local History and he is very excited about this opportunity. We are honored that one of our teachers has taken part in such a big Canadian event.

The Principal of War By Riana Ang-Canning

Harbord Collegiate has once again decided to enter the annual Sears Ontario Drama Festival. This year’s production titled A Principal of War was written by Riana Ang-Canning, a current grade 12 student at Harbord. The play is set at Harbord Collegiate in 1914 and is based on true events and real people. It is a story about three high school boys attending Harbord when the call for soldiers is at an all-time high. The boys face pressures from their families, friends, and a duty to their country as well as a struggle within themselves. Reminding them of this duty in the most intimidating and conniving ways is their principal, (based on Mr. E.W. Hagarty) a past principal at Harbord. He will do whatever it takes to make sure his Harbord boys are on the train to Valcartier, whether they want to or not. The cast and crew of A Principal of War would like to invite all Harbord alumni to attend the performance on February 26th at Jarvis Collegiate Institute.

The Victor Weinberg Award

The late Dr. Victor Weinberg, Harbord class of 1945, donated money to the Harbord Charitable Foundation for an annual award to a deserving student of academic studies, with a major interest in music and the arts. Dr. Weinberg had a deep passion for the opera and the symphony throughout his lifetime.

Harbord Club Carol E. Michelin Award

Dear Harbord Club,

I would like the Harbord Club Carol E. Michelin Award to be given annually either at Commencement or the Awards Assembly. A member of the West African Canadian Club (WACC) or subsequent organization that is open to the students at Harbord is eligible for the award. The student who receives the award will clearly demonstrate that he/she has been actively involved in raising awareness of Black History and/or

African-Canadian Heritage within the school community. I will continue to contribute to the Harbord Charitable Foundation until the interest earned on the donation will provide the funds needed for the award.

Should Harbord Collegiate Institute cease to exist, I would like the money to be divided equally and given to the following two organizations; one-half to World Vision for the neediest children in the West Indies and one-half to Music for Life Institute for the African Children’s Choir.

Thank you for your kind consideration and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Carol E. Michelin

MARTIN WOLFISH

(1926 – 2009)

Martin Wolfish attended High School at Harbord Collegiate Institute during the Second World War. While he attended the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, he won a medal for being the highest achieving student at a time where Jewish students were not easily accepted into professional

schools. Martin Wolfish later attended Yale University and completed his residency at Toronto General Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children and John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Throughout his career, Martin developed great skills and experience in his field, leading to a long and compassionate pediatric career. At the Shiva following his funeral, a woman told his wife, Sheila that when her baby was sick, Martin was sure to call her every day with updates in an age when parents were not allowed in the pediatric intensive-care unit.

Thinking creatively he sewed together a small blood pressure cuff to fit the tiny baby. This improvisation was later used as a prototype for baby cuffs. One of Martin’s greatest accomplishments was founding the adolescent clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children. He was a mentor to many younger doctors and residents. Martin will be remembered not only for his generous spirit and inner strength, but also for the wisdom he imparted to others. Taken from the Globe and Mail

Joseph Levitt a "Montrealer by birth" came to Toronto with his family in the mid-1930s. While here he attended Harbord Collegiate Institute. He was a bright young man who was offered a scholarship by the University of Toronto when he enrolled in its social science program. When war broke out while Joe was a student, he decided to put his education on hold and he made the brave decision to enlist in the war. Despite his opposition to war, he and many of his friends felt it was their duty to sign up for active service to oppose fascism and the horrors of Nazism. In 1941, Joe Levitt became one of almost 17,000 Jews enlisted in the Canadian armed forces.

Joe became a hero, recognized for his courage and leadership. As a Guardsman, Joe spent time in France, Belgium, Italy, Holland and Germany. But it was the battle for the Falaise Gap in Normandy where his bravery became most apparent, and he was one of the 196 Canadian Jewish soldiers to receive the Military Medal from the Canadian government in 1945. Out of the 17,000 Canadian Jews that served, 500 were buried with stars of David on their graves, scattered over 125 European cemeteries. Thousands of others returned home with serious physical and mental wounds. Joe was one of the more fortunate soldiers despite being wounded in Normandy, where his unit suffered severe casualties and lost half their tanks, his wounds were healed and he was able to resume a full life. Joe's contribution to Canada did not and with the war. He went back to the University of Toronto where he eventually received his PhD in 1967. From there he became a historian and a professor at the University of Ottawa. Joe became an expert on Henri Bourassa, an influential Quebec politician on whom he wrote extensively. Joseph Levitt's strong, calm demeanor led him to become a leader in the battlefield and an excellent teacher. The lives he saved, and the worlds he changed, will never be forgotten.

JOE LEVITT: Soldier, hero, historian,

Harbordite

The Harbord students volunteering after school to assist in the Harbord Club Museum over the past two years completed a number of projects. These projects include the entering of the names of all HCI grads dating back to our first Commencement in 1984. Commencing with the 2009 grads will be the comments which accompanied their photograph in the yearbook. Among the material found in the Museum were newspaper clippings collected over the years featuring Harbord grads. These were put into individual folders, alphabetically filed , from Applebaum to Zimmerman. The list of the persons who are so recognized has been put on the Harbord Club website. If your name is not there and you have some newspaper articles about yourself please forward them to the Museum c/o of Harbord C.I. and a file will be opened for you. Among the graduating students who helped last year we had some scholarship winners. David Xie was not only was awarded an Ontario Scholarship but he also received the Harbord Club Hank Stratton Award, the Harbord Club J. Hamilton Adams Award, and the University of Toronto

Faculty of Applied Science Award Galbraith Scholar. Colin Huang received an Ontario Scholarship and as a well received a Kensington Foundation Award, University of Toronto Edward Gladstone Schafer Memorial Scholarship and a University Health Network Academic Achievement Scholarship. Also named as Ontario Scholars were David Chen, Tammy Lung and Stephanie Tran. Congratulations and best wishes for continuing success at University. Your help and guidance at the Harbord Club Museum will be remembered . Others who helped last year earning their Community Service Hours were Priyanka Paul, Philip Cheung.Returning from last year and continuing this year is James Fu, Richard Sui and Jonathan To. Also assisting this year, with the teacher adviser Ms. Angela Gulia, are, Alba Moreno-Daza, Esther Jeon, Nila Begum, Peter Huynh, Kristina Alexiou. Alyson Naseer, Elisha Carter, Alisha Odegova, and Ayesha Johnson. Returning again to help is Eric Kwan who has transferred to another school and who has helped over the past 2 years. To be posted shortly under the History tab of the website will be a thumbnail sketch of Harbord’s history as prepared by Alba Moreno-Daza One of this year’s projects is to complete a virtual visit to the Museum which will be posted on the Harbord Club website. The volunteers are presently working on it , having already completed the photographing of the Museum and are preparing their comments on the contents of each display case. They will do a voice over for each cabinet so that you will be able to hear about your Museum wherever

you may be. Keep checking the website. Another project will be the posting of the photos of those Harbord students and staff who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. With the help of staff , Mr. Tim Dingwall and Mr. Daniel Leblanc, each photo will be accompanied with a note about each person. We have just learned from a person who was doing a family history that the name of another Harbord student who served and died in the first World War has been found. In doing his research he found an article in The Toronto Star from1917. Captain Frederick Mellor Hutchinson was killed on March 1, 1917 , in the weeks leading up to the battle of Vimy Ridge. We will be arranging to obtain his photo to have it added to the Hall of Memories and his name added to Harbord’s Honour Roll. Your Harbord Museum is open every Wednesday from 1:00pm to 5:00 pm during the school term.
