The Helm by Commodore Richard Boltz
The Logo for opening day, bridging generations is symbolic of what our Club needs to do attract new generations. As we continue in to 2018, we truly need to bridge generations. We need to continue to bring new generations into the club.
There is business term for managing and interacting with people in the workplace. It is Cross-functional Management/Collaboration. Collaboration is a natural part of working in teams, and in most organizations, it happens organically within functions or business units. In many cases, the team is simply a group of people from the different departments across a business working on solving a specific problem. Cross-functional collaboration is a group of people (That’s us, Members of the Club) with different expertise coming together to work toward the common goal of increasing our membership. We need to act in concert to attract new members of all generations. Potential members come from different generations. Look at the generations listed below. Which generation has the highest number of members in the Club? It’s clear we have an imbalance.
The G.I Generation: 1900-1924 The Silent Generation: 1925-1945 The Baby Boomers: 1946-1964 Generation X: 1965-1979 The Millennial Generation (Y): 1980-2000 Generation Z: 2000-to present
Statistically, the Silent Generation and Baby Boomers represent the majority of our Club. At some time in the near future, these two generations will be passing the baton to Generation X and the Millennial Generations. For us to be successful in growing our membership we need to understand what motivates them and focus our message to that end.
As a club, we need to attract new members. To do that effectively, we need to understand what motivates them. Gen Xers tend to have a "work hard, play hard" mentality. We need to have activities that will attract them. Activities like sailing, racing and boating in general. They want to collaborate. They want to be a part of something. Build on their interest in gaining new skills and knowledge by providing opportunities. To attract Gen Xers, we need more activates outside of the Norton Lounge such as working on boats, using boats, sailing, and learning the art of sailing. Gen Xers want clear and frequent feedback.

We need to reach them by more than the Wind Word. We need to actively get the word out by other means. The internet is a tool that we do not use effectively. Our Website should be current can much more effective than it is now. Our social media can get the word out and bring those Xers to our website for information about the benefits of the Club.
Millennials (Y) prefer using electronic means to communicate. This generation is far more fluent and comfortable with technology than any other groups. We are going to have to rely more on electronic means to communicate. That means a current and constantly updated our website and the ability to deliver a message via social media.
SEE YOU AT THE CLUB by TJ KitchenIn MemoriaThe news about our Commodore Larry Booth’s and Board Member Nancy Allison’s deaths within the span of a week came as a great shock to BYC’s membership and BYC’s Board of Directors. Larry’s engaging wit and humor and Nancy’s heart and generosity are missed dearly already. These losses have left a hole in our hearts that is impossible to fill. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Larry’s and Nancy’s friends and families.At this difficult time, Acting Commodore Richard Boltz has stepped forward to shoulder the leadership of our club. We are grateful for his determination to move this club forward despite the losses we have suffered. The Board of Directors is fully behind Richard as he manages the day-to-day operations of the club with the assistance of Rear Commodore Pat Bowers. The Board appreciates the support of the membership as we work through this transition.
EventsBYC has had many successful events to date during 2018, including St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance, Easter Brunch, BYC’s Annual Crab Feed, Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance, Cabaret Dinner, Murder Mystery Dinner, Oscar’s Night Party, Bingo Night, Sunday Afternoon Jazz and weekly Trivia. In addition to ticket sales, these events have brought in bar sales and have added to our relatively good financial stand-ing at this time. In addition to the financial benefits, these events are an important part of bringing our membership together for fun and friendship.Thanks to all of the volunteers that helped to make these events successful. Many hands make light work. Getting involved in events builds friendships and helps make this club successful. We are in the process of structuring a more formal Event Committee and if you have an interest in volunteering please contact TJ Kitchen at (925) 984-4628.
FinanceBYC is not only a club, it is a business and needs to manage its revenue and expenses like any other business. As the Treasurer, Teri Dale strives to present financial statements that provide meaningful information to both the members and the board to better assess the activi-ties of the club and plan for the future. Teri is pleased to report that BYC is heading in the right direction, and at this point BYC’s revenue is exceeding its budget.
BYC is also a 501 (c) (7) non-profit corporation and as such must adhere to various IRS rules that are essential to maintain our non-profit status. These rules require BYC to identify the sources of all of its revenue and to be able to identify member income and non-member income. One of the IRS Rules for maintaining BYC’s 501 (c) (7) status requires that BYC limit its non-member income to 15% or less. A major focus right now is to replace our current Point of Sale (POS) system with a system that is more dynamic. BYC needs a system that is easier to use and that can provide more financial analysis of our sales and cost of sales. Teri’s goal is to be able to generate a profit and loss analysis from the POS system for our individual events so BYC can track the source of its revenue and allocate its resources better. Teri and her husband, Steve Dale, have been members of yacht clubs for three decades, and they know that the success of a club is due in great part by members that are willing to volunteer their expertisend time. Teri gives special thanks to the assistance of board members that have given their time to be on the finance committee, especially Larry Booth, Nancy Allison, and Jackie Ramos. Teri will always be grateful for their technical assistance and personal support. If any member would like to help make BYC fiscally stronger, and especially those with bookkeeping and/ or accounting experience, please contact Teri or Richard Boltz to volunteer.
Pricing Structure for Private EventsRear Commodore Bowers has established new pricing for events for members and non-members. The goal of the new pricing was to incent non-members to join BYC because the cost of the BYC membership would cover the difference in the member vs. non-member pricing for their event. According to John Kitchen, BYC’s new Membership Chair, at least three new members have joined as a result of the changes in this new event pricing structure. Pat plans next to establish standardized menus for private events.
Phone SystemBYC will soon have a new phone system. Currently, when a call comes into the main number, we have one eneral voice mail box. BYC will be moving to a system that will have as many as six separate voice mail boxes, including for the Commodore and Membership Chair. The new system will allow incoming phone calls to be seamlessly transferred to the cell phones and/or emails of responsible par-ties. In particular, the new phone system will allow BYC to be more responsive to those seeking membership information and inquiries regarding private events. BYC is striving to get this new system at the same or slightly higher cost as the current system, but with much more functionality.
Youth Sailing2017-2018 was the first year that we have had kids sailing year round. It may not seem
like that should be a big deal, but it is to BYC YS volunteers! Each Saturday we have to have a Certified Instructor and another adult on the water with the kids on a safety vessel. Because we only have 6-7 of us who volunteer for youth sailing and the many Saturdays, it is a huge commitment. I want to THANK Barbara Fredericks who organized a site for kids and our volunteers to sign up for Saturday Sail and for being at the helm for so many Saturdays for safety. Also Bob Hall, Ken Vanstory, John Dillow, and Tim Rose who have helped as safety on Saturdays as well. A huge thank you to Tim Rose for cleaning, numbering, putting in the new pump, and Pat Shue who helped to rewired the boat. The kids would never have had this full year on the water without these few people, thank you very much.
Commodore Boltz’s announcement that there weren’t many or any boats signed up for the boat decorating or the blessing at the membership meeting just three days before Opening Day prompted Tim and I to decorate our boat for the day and sign up to get blessed. We contacted our young Sailors and asked them to meet at our boat for the Blessing on Opening Day. We hand made a banner which read: Benicia YC Youth Sailing, a large drawing of the Opening Day Logo and then We Support Youth and Families! We dressed in matching outfits, we wore jeans or jean shorts, I “homemade” shirts for the kids with the Opening Day logo ironed on to the tee shirts, we also had matching nautical bandanas around our necks
and were present for the blessing and the viewing party. It was the first time to take part of Opening Day for three of the youth families that attended and they loved it! The Oakland Police boat was a fun and different way to get blessed this year. Ken and Betty Jensen, two men from the Marina office staff, Greg and Carol Kennedy along with the Oakland Police officers did a great job going from boat to boat to bless each of us. They even blessed our youth sailing safety boat, Thank You!
Again, I need to THANK John Ash and the entire Benicia Marina Corp. for the beautiful job on the floatation barge. It is beautiful! The barge is safe, it is clean and roomy. We’d like to thank him for his support of Youth Sailing and for the help on Opening Day!
As alway, we ask for your continued support. Please welcome the youth sailors and their families into the club. We are so proud of Youth Sailing, the kids who continue to learn and their families who support them. We will soon be hosting YS lessons for new families, hopefully they will become part of our BYC membership and family.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater by Susan Linn
The Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre on February 24th was a huge success. I have to commend Joanne, Carlos, Lisa, Cheyenne, Anne Marie and Pedro for their wonderful accomplishments that night. The service was superb and right on cue. It was a three course dinner andch course had to coincide with the 3 acts of the performance. The dinner was delicious.
The three actors did a wonderful job in engaging the guests. At one time there were probably 10 of our folks on stage with the actors. The theme was the Roaring Twenties. I was delighted to see so many folks in costume. Maybe we can do this again next year with another theme. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

An apology to any of you whose articles did not make into last months WW. Biography’s for the candi-dates took up a bit of space in the last edition and we could not get all of the stories in, we have included your articles in this edition.
There is a lot of work that goes into getting the Wind Word to you. With each edition that I have done, it has gotten easier, though it is still very time consuming. I am hoping that there is a member out there that would consider coming on board to help with putting out the WW in 2015. I am willing to help you get started! I also encourage having a team to sell advertising to defray the cost of future editions.
With that said, I am concerned that the WW is set to go on line only. It has been a topic of discussion before my taking over for HR as Editor. My concern is for the many members who do not have internet access and those not familiar with the internet itself, that may not search for the BYC website and the Wind Word. Without the phone tree, our only news update to our members is the Scuttlebutt, also an
internet based informational blast.
It would be much more cost effective to post on line only. Would you go on line and read it? Would you miss getting this in the mail and reading it as a print material? Think about that and let the board know your thoughts about the Wind Word’s future.
Because of the low number of readership that we have, membership is just over 200, we are not in competition with other local newspapers and publications as far as advertising goes. I do believe that we could do a better job to gain advertisement with our low costs and help defray the cost of this paper. If you would like to advertise and would like more information, please feel free to contact me or the board about this matter. .... Contact Mike Mathews at 707-745-0610.
I will be accepting LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about the future of the WW and anything else that you would like to discuss.
As I mentioned before, I would love to hear from you. All articles will be considered for print though member and mariner related articles will take priority and preference.
