Delaying screenings may impact your health. Heart, colon and lung screenings, as well as mammograms, can help your Ascension St. John care team get a clearer picture of your health and work with you to address any concerns.
Talk to your doctor about a plan that works for you. If you do have an in-person screening or need follow-up care, Ascension hospitals and facilities are following strict safety precautions so we’re fully prepared for your safety while in our care. Ask if a virtual visit is available for your pre-screening or any follow-up appointments you may have.

Thank you for joining us for the The Helm’s 24th Annual Auction Gala!
While we thought we’d be gathering together once again in a local venue, 2020 had a very different plan. So, while we cannot be in the same location, we can be together on screen and for the same great cause.
It would have been easy to cancel this year’s event and just resume in 2021, but we really don’t have that option. Seventy-five percent of The Helm’s budget comes from donations, with the gala accounting for a significant portion. We just could not provide the services our constituents need without that funding.
So we needed to press on, just like we have done throughout the pandemic, providing vital services to adults in the community. While the building was closed,
our staff was here making sure our seniors got the services they needed. And to continue to do this, we need your support. Proceeds raised during the Gala allow
us to continue to meet the needs of older residents in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods, whether that’s Meals on Wheels, congregate lunches, the medical loan closet, help with needed services, continuing education or just opportunities to socialize and not be alone.
On the following pages, you will read about our fabulous live auction items. Find items to bid on and acknowledge the wonderful businesses and individuals who support The Helm through their donations of goods and services. (We encourage you to support them in the future.)
And, most of all, be there – helmgala.cbo.io – at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, for the fun and festivities.

Each year at the Gala, The Helm recognizes a business or individual in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods who has helped support The Helm’s mission, as well as the community. As we began to think about who to recognize this year, we realized how much our organization and our constituents relied heavily on our medical community to keep us informed, safe and healthy during this most unusual of years. The Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, east side of Detroit and Detroit’s lower east metro area are fortunate to be home to three exceptional health systems. These three hospitals’ nearly 7,000 associates worked tirelessly and relentlessly providing quality care to area residents throughout this pandemic and continue to do so even now. Their dedication, support and care continues to be unparalleled and appreciated beyond words. They were and continue to be here to support us, our friends and all of you. We could think of no more worthy people to honor than these Hometown Healthcare Heroes – the physicians and staffs of Ascension St. John Hospital, Henry Ford Medical Centers – Cottage and Pierson and Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe. These facilities have been in our neighborhood for decades — in two cases, more than a century — always providing top-notch care. Their employees are our neighbors, friends and relatives. Please take a moment to think of these selfless individuals – and, when you see them in person, say “Thank You.”
Ascension St. John St. John Hospital & Medical Center - Detroit, now Ascension St. John Hospital, opened in 1952 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to serve Detroit’s east side and surrounding suburbs as the area’s population boomed. It underwent significant additions and renovations over the years to become a tertiary hospital for the region and is the only Adult Level One Trauma Center on Detroit’s east side. It is part of Ascension, one of the leading nonprofit and Catholic health systems in the United States. Today the hospital employs 3,385 associates and has a medical physician staff of 1,148.Representing Ascension St. John Hospital – Dr. Kevin Grady, President and CEO
Henry Ford Medical Centers – Cottage and PiersonCottage Hospital, now part of the Henry Ford Health System, was founded, ironically enough, as the result of the 1918 Spanish influenza epidemic which saw 600 cases and seven deaths in Grosse Pointe Township. The hospital, opened in 1919 by a group of “Grosse Pointe ladies,” was considered the go-to place in Grosse Pointe for doctors and patients in the 1930s and ’40s. In 1986, the hospital became part of the Henry Ford Health System. It is a multi-service
outpatient health care center with a 24/7 emergency department and walk-in clinic, as well as cancer care center.Representing Henry Ford Health System – Robert Riney, President, Healthcare Operations/Chief Operating Officer
Beaumont Hospital, Grosse PointeThe Sisters of Bon Secours came to Detroit in 1909. For the first 30 years they provided home nursing care, including throughout the 1918 pandemic. In 1938 they purchased the Cadieux farmhouse, then located on the current site of Beaumont Grosse Pointe, to convert it into a 10-bed convalescent home for women. In 1945 it officially opened as a hospital. The Sisters ministered in the Detroit area more than 98 years, until they sold their Michigan operation to Beaumont in October 2007. The 1,772 associates of Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe offer medical, surgical, emergency, obstetric and critical case services. It is recognized as “high performing” in three medical specialties by U.S. News & World Report.Representing Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe -Kristen Cavender, Vice President of Operations and Brad Lukas, Chief Nursing Officer
