The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1110 11 th October 2019 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk When The Hemel Hempstead School was a grammar in the pre and post war period, there were just four houses. Then in 1971 the school expanded and became truly comprehensive, a new house system was launched which we are justifiably still very proud of today. Six new houses, each named after local villages, each one of which had grown up in Roman times around a central house or villa were chosen: Ashridge, Chalfont, Flaunden, Latimer, Nettleden and Pendley. It is always very exciting for me when people come to visit the school and at the end of the meeting drop in something like “my father came here you know” or “actually, I was at this school in the…” and I always offer to take them down the corridor by my office and find the photograph which has them, a relative, a friend or a loved one in. Faces light up when they find an often grainy glimpse of their history staring back at them. It is a salient reminder of our place in the rich history of the school and of this town. How much of an honour it is for me then, as the 10 th Headteacher of The Hemel Hempstead School to launch a new house, in the same tradition: Gaddesden. The new house has four Senior House Captains which includes the Deputy Head boy and Deputy Head girl. We wanted to start with something special so the thirty-one inaugural members of the new house, all from Year 7, set off this week to visit the great house which stands at the centre, physically and historically, of the Gaddesden Estate. These thirty-one youngsters, with their white striped tie, represent the start of what will become a legacy, just like the other houses, passed from generation to generation and used as conduit for all that is special about this school - competition, leadership, sports, performance, charity, attendance and academic excellence. These were all the things that I believe we showed, with pride, on our Open Day last weekend and our open mornings this week. We have had over one thousand prospective families visit us this year, a humbling ad vocation of all which we, my fantastic staff especially, do here. Neil Hassell Headteacher

When The Hemel Hempstead School was a grammar in the pre and post war period, there were just four houses. Then in 1971 the school expanded and became truly comprehensive, a new house system was launched which we are justifiably still very proud of today. Oxford and Cambridge University Information Evening

This year’s Oxford and Cambridge University Information Evening is on Wednesday 16th October at 6.30pm in the Sixth Form Study Room (M9). Interested parents and students are warmly invited. The evening is an opportunity for students to think about their future path beyond Sixth Form and to explore Oxford and Cambridge Universities as an option. Our main speaker will be Pravahi Osman, who is involved with Admissions at Baliol College, Oxford. There will also be a panel of students past and present who will share their experiences of applying and preparing for Oxbridge. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and continue informal discussions with the speakers and panel over refreshments. Mr Saunders Assistant Headteacher KS5

7G – Gaddesden Visit

On Monday 7th October 7G went to visit Gaddesden House to celebrate the start of the new house at school. We arrived for the start of lunch and stayed for the rest of the school day. We toured the garden of this gargantuan house. During our tour we found out a lot about the history of the house, including about the fire that burnt down the original house. After the fire, people from all over the world gave their paintings to the house owners and relatives to start another collection all over again. The collection of paintings is once again very impressive. It was the perfect celebration of our new house and we hope to visit again soon. Sophie Somerville 7G During our time at school on Monday, 7G were kindly invited to visit Gaddesden House to learn about its history. Gaddesden Estate was very grand and posh, Mr and Mrs Halsey were very kind to invite us there to learn more about the backstory of this historic house. We learnt that there was a fire and most of the house and pictures were burnt in this tragedy. Luckily, their family gave them more pictures of their past ancestors. As the new form we wanted to mark the occasion so we took a photo of us in front of the historic estate and we will now be known as the first students to launch Gaddesden House at The Hemel Hempstead School. We were very thankful for the visit and learnt a lot about their past agriculture and lives. Fenella Makepeace and Ruby Feander 7G

Uganda Expedition 2021

It is very exciting to be giving our Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to travel to Uganda with Camps International during the summer of 2021, following the very successful expedition to Cambodia this summer. Here students will be working on a range of sustainable and meaningful community and conservation projects before heading into Murchison Falls National Park on safari and embarking upon a spectacular trek to summit the extinct volcano of Mount Elgon. We had a sign up and fundraising meeting yesterday, but I realise several people had other commitments so we will repeat the meeting next Friday 18th October 1.35pm in Bio 4. Anyone interested is welcome and those who did not get a pack last night can pick theirs up on Friday. The link below is for you to register to find out more information. https://form.campsinternational.com/register Our School Code is 6287 Ms Gilmore

Harry Potter Trip

Tuesday the 1st of October saw 45 avid Hemel Hempstead First Years board the boats at Hogsmeade to cross the Black Lake to Hogwarts … OK, actually they were Year 7 Hemel Hempstead School pupils getting on minibuses to go to the Warner Bros Studio Tour for a filmmaking workshop and Harry Potter tour. The expert educators provided an interactive session on Script to Screen exploring how films go from one sentence pitches to spectacular moving pictures. Eagerly engaged, the students’ hands were almost always up as straight and as high as Hermione’s in a Potions Class. It was fascinating to learn how the ten-word phrase, “It is about a boy who goes to wizard school,” became a currently ten-film franchise that is one of the most watched of all time. After a quick bite to eat, the eager students headed into the tour itself, enchanting themselves with original props, interactive displays and even a live-action wand battle against the Death Eaters. Clutching souvenir guidebooks and wearing prominent smiles the weary witches and wizards finally boarded the buses to return to the muggle world.

Year 9 iFly trip

On Thursday 3rd October the students involved in the school’s leadership training received a reward trip to iFly in Milton Keynes for a day of indoor skydiving. After a brief safety presentation we gathered at the wind tunnel equipped with jumpsuits, helmets, goggles and earplugs which were vital. Joined by teachers Mrs Littlejohn and Mr Gregson, we enjoyed two very exciting flight sessions and then an interesting wind workshop hosted by iFly’s science specialists.
