The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 1121 17 th January 2020 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk It might have seemed a little cruel to keep Year Eleven waiting on tenterhooks for their trial examination results… However, this week they all got to understand why in a very important special assembly. The trial examinations are not just about checking where students are in each subject. They are also a dress rehearsal for the real thing. They are an opportunity to practice the logistics, the preparation, the revision planning, the resilience and the emotions of the examinations and of result day. A trial results day is therefore an opportunity to feel what it will be like. I often share with students my own experiences. The utter joy of GCSE results day and (with Jo) being the first people in my school to get an A*, utter dejection and humiliation of A Level results day when I realised what I had done and then the pride of my degree ceremony, pride in making amends, getting back on track, and winning a faculty award for my dissertation. Young people are often afraid to make mistakes at school; yet this is the very best place to make them. So for some ‘trial’ results day was one of joy and excitement, for others of regret, disappointment, and thoughtful reflection. That latter group have a chance now that they have felt what it could be like and they now have 70 days to make sure it doesn't feel like that in August. The results from the GCSE and A Level trial examinations are excellent and we are very confident for a bumper set of fantastic results in the summer. All of the students are working incredibly hard and we are very proud of them. This is also a great opportunity to congratulate Ed Grayson, who has secured this week a conditional offer from Balliol College, University of Oxford.

It might have seemed a little cruel to keep Year Eleven waiting on tenterhooks for their trial examination results… However, this week they all got to understand why in a very important special assembly.

Food Technology Appeal Many students come to Food practical lessons without a suitable plastic container to take home their cooked food. So, rather than throwing away or recycling, we are appealing for donations of empty plastic containers that we can loan out to students. Chocolate/biscuit boxes, plastic takeaway trays with lids and Christmas pudding basins would all be really useful.

Thank you Mrs K Russell Food & Nutrition Teacher

Most children use their mobile phone sensibly and maturely outside of school and we always find that there is a strong correlation between this and parents being open and honest with their children about what they are using their phones for. This can typically include the use of filters on home wireless, mobile accounts with parental controls, actively following their children on social media, engaging in conversations with them, and checking their phones. Parent also report to us that insisting that phones are charged at night in kitchen, and not allowed to be taken into bedrooms is a very effective way of preventing night time use. Over the past three months we have had to assist the police with serious investigations where, outside of school, children have received child pornography over social media. Having this material on a phone is an offence in its own right, but if a parent is diligent and a child has an honest relationship with them then the images can be reported (to the police or the school) and deleted without being viewed and the sender blocked and reported. The police would encourage this kind of responsible parenting. However, in these two cases a young person decided to forward on an image or video. This is a serious criminal act and the police have no option but to seize the phone and investigate a crime which must be logged and the child logged as a criminal. In the most serious cases a child can end up being arrested, charged and placed on the Sex Offenders Register. Please do take the opportunity to review your responsibilities as a parent in monitoring your child's use of their mobile phone and have open and honest conversations with your children about how you are going to do that and why. Great advice for parents can be found at https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/ Neil Hassell Headteacher

Oxford University Bodleian Education Visit

Wednesday 15th January saw our Year 12 English Literature students visit Oxford University’s Bodleian Library for a series of lectures and seminars on Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ as well as having a chance to see some of the original manuscripts, something that even many academics in the field do not get the chance to do. Lectures and seminars by an archivist and a post-doctoral researcher in the field of literature and science examined the history of the Gothic genre, the process of Shelley’s writing of ‘Frankenstein’, as well as the editing process and influence of the poet, Mary’s husband, Percy Shelley on the text. The day finished with a visit to the History of Science Museum to learn about Galvanism, early chemistry and anatomy: the science behind the fiction, followed by a walk through the quad of University College to see P. B. Shelley’s ‘tomb’. Participating students were awed to get so close to the priceless manuscripts and the lectures, one said, “really made me want to study at university.”

Social media: ChatHealth service provided by the Hertfordshire School Nursing team

Please help us to promote your school nurse’s ChatHealth service by giving us a mention on your school’s social media channels.

ChatHealth is a confidential text messaging service that enables parents and young people to contact their local public health nursing (school nursing) team.

By spreading the word about our ChatHealth service at your school, you can help us offer more choice of access and reach more young people in need of confidential health advice and support.

In the table below are examples of messages that can go out via your different social media accounts. We would really appreciate your support in spreading the word about this valuable service to your students. Our Hertfordshire School Nurse team have our own social media accounts and they are listed below and information on how to access them to follow. We are available in the school holidays too and the table below suggest prompts for you to remind your students key times when they may need more support e.g. the start of the new term and exam times.
