SkILL UP These practical artist-led sessions are designed to be fun and inspirational. They allow you to work with an artist to explore an element of artistic practice that can be taken back into the classroom. Each session will begin with a tour of the exhibition by one of our curators. Cost for sessions: Primary £10*, Secondary, free*.

drawing from Experience4-6.30pm on 7 November 2012 (Primary) and 8 November 2012 (Secondary)In the 1940s Hepworth drew from the experience of watching her daughter undergo surgery, observing procedures and working them up into sketches – 60 of which exist to create a journal of her observations. Working with the idea of a ‘journal of observations’ and personal memories, you will work with artist Laura Slater to make your own sketchbook and start your very own visual journal.

The Timeless Property of Plaster4-6.30pm on 12 March 2013 (Primary) and 13 March 2013 (Secondary) This spring, artists Alice Channer, Linder Sterling and Jessica Jackson Hutchins have made work inspired by the idea of the Hepworth Gift, a collection of plasters, working models by Barbara Hepworth. Explore the medium both past and present and try your hand at your own plaster sculptures with Victoria Lucas.

Collaboration in the Making4-6.30pm on 18 June 2013 (Primary) and 19 June 2013 (Secondary)Mixing things up: Haroon Mirza works across installation, intervention, sculpture and sound to create works that mix up references from popular culture. Work with artist Gillian Brent and dJ Reuben Griffiths to create a large-scale collective installation that incorporates sculpture and sound. This is a chance to get stuck into some large-scale making and to explore ideas of team work, negotiation and shared aesthetics.

Creative Learning NetworkIf you’re a teacher wanting to talk to artists about ideas, an artist who wants to know more about schools, or just interested in meeting up with other creative people to share your thoughts, the Creative Network is for you. Open to Early Years, Primary, Secondary and Post-16 teachers and creative practitioners from all disciplines, the network meets five times an academic year to explore a particular idea or issue through practical making and doing. In partnership with Theatre Royal Wakefield. Places are limited – book early to avoid disappointment on 01924 247398.

See our website for more details www.hepworthwakefield.org/learning/teachers

FOR YOUR SCHOOL If you’re looking for a whole-school experience and want your teachers to plan and experience the gallery as a team, why not talk to us about our new INSET day offer? Explore the gallery as a school staff, followed by practical making sessions in sculpture, drama, creative writing, print making or music.

*VAT not included. Sessions are FREE to Secondary teachers thanks to funding through Wakefield Centre Learning Community Network.

THE YEAR AHEAdThroughout the 2012/13 academic year, our collection displays will focus on the theme of post-war British sculpture, examining a shift in attitude towards making, as well as a radical new approach to the human body.

Here are some highlights for the coming academic year:

AUTUMN 2012Barbara Hepworth: The Hospital drawings27 October 2012 – 3 February 2013An exhibition of extraordinary drawings created by Barbara Hepworth between 1947 and 1949, depicting her experiences of watching surgeons perform operations.

SPRING 2013Alice Channer, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Linder Sterling16 February – 2 June 2013Three exhibitions which explore the body through a reworking of everyday objects such as magazines, furniture, fabric, clothing, jewellery and advertising displays.

SUMMER 2013William Scott15 June – 29 September 2013Spanning the career of the British painter William Scott this exhibition will look at how the artist moved from still-life, landscape and figurative painting toward a highly evocative abstraction.

Haroon Mirza15 June – 29 September 2013Combining found objects, artworks, sound and movement, Haroon Mirza’s installation will resonate through the galleries as it engages with different histories of sculpture and art.
