& Elizabeth Penrose

of St Gluvias

The Rev. John Penrose (1713-1776) was the gifted

son of an Exeter tailor. He graduated from Exeter

College Oxford and took holy orders.

In 1737 he married Elizabeth Vinnicombe, the

daughter of a priest-vicar of Exeter Cathedral.

In 1741 he was appointed Vicar of St Gluvias, a

parish adjacent to Penryn in Cornwall.

He was a friend of the noted Anglican reformer,

Samuel Walker, and a member of his “Parson’s

Club”. The efforts of Samuel Walker and John

Wesley are credited with the 18th Century Cornish

Revival which radically changed the moral and

spiritual life of Cornwall.

This booklet traces the descendants of John and

Elizabeth to 2000 and his antecedents as far as

they can be verified. Be prepared for surprises.
