The activities and events planned for January are advertised in this newsletter. Except for the Crystal Gage Show, those meant to take place in the clubhouse will NOT occur if the clubhouse is still off limits on the scheduled date of the event. We plan to make alternate arrangements of venue for the Crystal Gage Show

should it be necessary. In the case of this event, the show will go on, so please continue to sign up on the sheet in the clubhouse, and purchase your tickets in the Clubhouse foyer on Thursday evenings between 6:15—7:00. For other events, watch your email and notices on the clubhouse doors for announcements of what, when, and

where activities will take place or can resume. We are hoping for a reopening in early January.

This year the Highlands Sunshine Ladies were able to help more people than any previous year since our founding. We were able to provide our adopted family from last Christmas with food, clothing, toys, and furnishings for their home.

To Everyday Blessings in Thonotossasa we donated $130.00 in diaper wipes, Lysol spray and 3 hand made baby blankets. Everyday Blessings is a group home for up to 28 children from all economic backgrounds and ethnic groups who have been removed from their previous homes due to abuse, neglect or abandonment.

To Cares Adult Day Care in Dade City we, with a lot of help from the Highlands Yarn Crafters, donated 14 lap blankets and 6 purchased throws.

With the help of many generous Highlanders, we collected canned and non-perishable food and donated it to the Food Pantry in Zephyrhills.

To help one of our own, a cash donation was given on behalf of the Highlands community to Perry and Maureen Russo’s son who lost a job 2 weeks before Christmas. He has 4 boys who would not have had a tree nor gifts without our help. Their son had stage 4 cancer 2 years ago and is just getting back on his feet. We’re hoping this donation will help lessen the strain a little.

We as a group were so blessed to be able to help so many people. We have set up a white basket in the foyer by the round table to collect food items for the needy all year and not just at Christmas season. Whenever you have canned or non-perishable food items you’d like to donate to the needy, please drop them in the basket to help us help others.

We wish everyone a very healthy New Year. May we all be blessed again in 2016.

They were very thankful for the blankets.

For the coordinated purchase of 2015 Mahjongg cards by Highlands players, the National Mahjongg League returned a charitable contribution of $145 for Everyday Blessings in

Thonotassassa. The Sunshine Committee donated baby wipes, disinfectants, and baby blankets. Nancy Meech, Karen

A Big THANK YOU to All from the group of ladies who made the Christmas quilt raffled here in the Highlands. We collected $270 through your generous donations to help a family of three children have a Merry Christmas.

We bought gifts for 2 eight year olds who asked for art supplies and their 5 year old brother who asked for a coloring book. We were able to buy jackets, hats, mittens, pj’s and a whole sack of goodies for under the tree. Thank you one and all.

The Quilt Ladies

Dear Residents,

I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year and thank you for your patience while we make an assessment and repairs to the clubhouse. I know many of you have questions regarding what has happened and what the time frame is for using the clubhouse again. Following is a brief synopsis of the events that led to the closing of the clubhouse:

There was an odor in the office areas that caused eye and throat irritation to office staff and has worsened over several months. We temporarily moved the office to the sales office location while we investigated to find the source. It is known that the roof needs to be replaced and is suspected that there may be ceiling insulation that has been water damaged along with A/C units and duct work that need to be cleaned. The odor was subtle, but starting to be noticed in other areas of the CH around December 15th. We had air quality samples taken on December 17th and the clubhouse was closed on December 18th until we received the air testing results. We erred on the side of caution for the safety of residents and staff and to be fully informed before we decided on a scope of work.

I anticipate that all repairs and corrections will be completed by February 1st. I will keep the Social Committee abreast of any new information as I know more. Again, I apologize for the interruption of your activities and events and we will work to get back to normal as soon as possible. A special Thanks to Deb Riss for coordinating the change of venue for the New Year’s Eve party!!

HTA Foundation

In 2009 HTA established The Hometown America Foundation to underscore our company’s commitment to community and home life with a goal of giving back in the communities where our residents and employees work and live. Our primary focus has been and will continue to be supporting organizations which assist homeless youth and at-risk children, housing disaster relief, housing for women and children affected by domestic violence, and elderly assistance programs. In September 2015, each HTA community manager was asked to submit a grant application for a worthwhile charity in their area. After some research, I chose the Coalition of for the Homeless of Pasco County. Pasco County has the highest number of homeless people in Florida and have recently added to those numbers with residents who lost their homes due to flooding in August 2015. The Coalition was established in 1988 and they distribute supplies, food and shelter to 40 agencies throughout the county. Their Vision: To ensure a safe place for everyone, every night. I’m happy to announce that the Coalition was chosen by the HTA Foundation to receive a $5000 grant from Hometown America and a check was presented to their Executive Director, Eugene Williams in our clubhouse on December 7, 2015. It is a pleasure to work for a company that gives back!

I’m looking forward to a busy and fun filled New Year at The Highlands!

Happy New Year

In Memoriam

A pillar of our community, ever active, and dear friend, Bob Sneed passed away early Saturday morning, December 19th. Bob lived with his wife Betty on Tee Time. He often gave the blessing at community events and will be remembered for his dedication to his

family and our community.

Paul and I hope you all had a good holiday season and like us had an opportunity to visit with family and friends here in the community and those far away. Along with a number of other holiday traditions, the sending of Christmas cards fell by the wayside as Paul

continues his recovery from the ramifications of cancer and chemotherapy. We haven’t expressed our thanks often enough or loud enough to ensure that everyone who has supported and visited us understands how much we appreciate their efforts. 2015 was a rough year, and we are hoping that 2016 will be a year of improvement.

Thank you all for your help and encouragement through the past year. And, don’t be strangers. Paul (and me too!) likes having company drop by.

Coordinated Acquisition of 2016 Mahjongg Cards

I was able to extend the deadline a few more days to Saturday January 9th in order to include as many players as possible in our group renewal of Mahjongg cards for 2016. Card prices are the same as last year: $8.00 for a standard print size card, $9.00 for a large print card.

I will continue to accept payments through the 9th. First time orders from new players and/or any players who did not participate in our single order last year can still be included in this year’s order.

If you wish to be included in our group order, please put your remittance in an envelope with your name and amount enclosed on it and drop it off at my house by Saturday. If paying by check, make them out to me because I submit a single payment for all cards.

Thanks so much for your participation to help our Everyday Blessings Charity.

Mahjongg Players

There is organized mahjongg play at the clubhouse on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Players meet at 1:00 PM on Monday and Friday and at 9:30 AM on Tuesday. The session on Tuesday does not involve prize money. If you are interested in learning to play mahjongg, contact either Nancy Meech or Zoe Lyons.

Marathons are generally held the first Monday of the month. We start play at 9:00 AM and play straight through until 1:00 PM. Throughout the morning we take short breaks to move around and partake of food brought by the players for themselves. Up to 16 games can be played during a marathon depending on the speed of play. $5 per player is collected for the prize fund for the marathon. All players are welcome. Marathon players are encouraged to come early so there is sufficient time to get everyone signed in and games set up so play can begin promptly at 9:00 AM.

January’s marathon scheduled for Monday, January 4th was cancelled due to the clubhouse closure. February’s will be on Monday, February 1st. Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board several weeks before each marathon. December’s marathon winners were: 1st Place - Terri Pawlicki, 2nd Place - Ann LaFontaine, 3rd Place - Di Sponsler

Call for Candidates for Community Secretary and Community Treasurer

In order to conduct Highlands Community affairs and have community functions run smoothly, Highlands residents established our Highlands Community Procedural Guidelines in 2010. Among other things, they explain how money considered to be “community funds” are to be managed and how decisions are made to collect and use those funds. Two community officers are essential to successful implementation: our Community Secretary and our Community Treasurer. An election is held in January of even numbered years to fill these two offices. The individuals elected to these two positions serve a term of 2 years beginning immediately after the election results are announced.

Because our current Community Secretary Jayne Haas and our current Community Treasurer Sue Hammerling have only served one term (There is a two term limit.), they along with all other Highlands residents are eligible to run for either of these two offices. The responsibilities of the Secretary and Treasurer are described in the Highlands Community Procedural Guidelines which can be found on our website www.floridahighlands.com or you can contact Jayne or Sue for their insights about their positions.

Please consider running and taking responsibility for one of these two positions. They are essential to the smooth functioning of our many Highlands social activities and the processes by which we make community-wide decisions. Without them, the Social Committee along with other functions will be unable to meet cash-flow needs to support community-wide events, nor will any decisions or votes taken at community meetings be considered valid. The Highlands “works” because there are residents who care enough to step up and assume responsibility for keeping things running effectively, but they are currently few in number.

If you wish to run for one of these community positions, please sign up on the sheet currently hanging on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. Candidates will be accepted on the list until Sunday, January 10th. The election by ballot at the clubhouse for these officers will take place immediately before the Community meeting on Saturday, January 16th. The new officers will be announced before the close of that meeting.

Please think about standing for one of these offices. We need more folks to be involved.

Jim Kozelski & Dick Stein, Election Committee

Thanks go to Hometown America for sponsoring our newsletter. HTA pays for all printing and web publication charges.

The Highlands Clubhouse is closed until further notice (possibly into mid-January) due to air quality control issues. Management is temporarily relocated to the Sales office on Fairway Loop. Hometown America is erring on the side of caution. The minute or two it takes to go into the clubhouse to sign up for an event or drop off food into the collection basket is not likely to cause anyone any problems.

Bob Sneed passed early morning, Saturday, December 19. Meeting attendees paused for a moment of silence in his honor.

Treasurer’s Report by Sue Hammerling: There was a loss on the night the magician performed of $184.50. The Christmas Party returned a nice gain primarily because Hometown America assumed the cost of the entertainment. Thanks were extended to Hometown American.

Social Committee announcements by Deb Riss: Due to the clubhouse closure, the Highlands New Years Eve party will be held at Scotland Yards. If the clubhouse isn’t open by January 9th, the Ice Cream Social/Trivia Night for that night will be postponed. Tickets for the Social are $4 sold at the door. The Trivia game starts at 6:30. Ice cream will be served at the break. The signup sheet is on the bulletin board.

Hot Dog night will be held on Wednesday, January 13th if the clubhouse is open. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the clubhouse as normal hoping for a timely clubhouse reopening.

Sunshine Committee (Barb Gehling): No baskets were given out in December. There will be a container in our clubhouse lobby year round for collection of canned and non-perishable goods for food pantries in our area.

Ken White recognized the elves who delivered Christmas cards this year. Sandra & David Neil, Jane & Paul Poirier, Denise and Jim Kozelsky, Barbara & John Gehling, Pam & Mike Gregory, Norma & Barry Slemmer, Lorraine & Ken Davenport, Deb Riss, Barbara O Neil, Heather Phillips, and Ken White. Thank you!

John Bongiardina reminded everyone that the signup sheet is still on the bulletin board for the Tampa Bay Downs outing February 10th.

Lorraine Davenport thanked everyone who made December Bingo so special with Christmas goodies.

Chris Weegar reported that the January newsletter will arrive late because of the holidays, (which you already know because you are reading this now).

We still need volunteers for the positions of Community Secretary and Community Treasurer for the next two years. Step up people! We need community involvement!! Contact Jim Kozelsky if you are interested. If we don’t fill these two positions we will experience a Highlands’ version of a government shutdown. We will be unable to conduct any community business at meetings, and no one will be responsible for dispersing community funds to support activities.

Sandra Neil said the Saturday coffee klatch group is planning a breakfast/brunch potluck to be held on Saturday, January 23. A signup sheet and announcement will be posted on the clubhouse bulletin board.

Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year!
