Touched by Jesus to Touch Other’s Lives…
Experience God’s T.O.U.C.H.
The Highline eConnection
February 2017
Are You Hurting? Do you need a tangible, physical way to express the pain in your heart and soul?
During the six-week sermon series on the book of Lamentations, we have a special response station available to us in the Worship Center---The Wall of Lament.
There are colored papers in the chair backs and at the tables near the Wall of Lament. Write out your lament--your cry, your hurt, your pain. It could be about a national or global issue that causes you anxiety. It could be about the suffering that someone else is going through. It could be about the hurt in your own life or family. Write it out, then roll it up and put it in the wall. As you do, ask God for healing, hope, and help. No one is going to read what you wrote except God.

World Outreach News Missionaries of the Month- Paul & Sheri Moreland
Dear brothers and sisters of our mutual Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ,
Greetings from Coffee Country! 2016 is now in the history books and we've started on the new year granted to us by our Creator. We look forward to seeing how He will work in and through us in 2017. Family Time On December 3 our son Timothy arrived for a visit. He had not been back to Colombia since just before being deployed by the USMC to Japan in 2011. Unfortunately, his wife Paula was unable to accompany him due to a conflicting work schedule. It was with great joy we greeted him at Matecaña International Airport and the three weeks he spent with us and his friends in the area were a real blessing. He also managed to visit his grandparents in Medellin, taking his mother along as a surprise. They had quite an interesting trip as there were multiple landslides from the rains as well as at least one bad accident that tied up the highway for hours. The usual 5 hour trip lasted 9 hours, but they arrived safe and sound and had a great time. Christmas in Colombia Christmas is a big deal in Colombia. It falls at the end of the school year so there is plenty of opportunity for celebration by kids and adults alike. The season starts off with the celebration of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8th. But, just like Christmas, the eve of the feast day is the big celebration here. It is known as "La Noche De Las Velitas" (The night of the candles) and is celebrated by a huge percentage of the population. People sit out in front of their houses and light candles which they typically place in elaborate paper lanterns on the sidewalk or even in the street. Kids run around with sparklers and families indulge in special treats. Christmas Eve - Colombian Style The 24th is the Big Celebration as they gather for a midnight dinner. At the stroke of midnight there is often a mass lighting of fireworks (which are illegal in most large cities - but omnipresent anyway) and the children open their

gifts which are brought by "El Niño Dios" (The Child God). Our Version We were invited to celebrate with one family and were able to share with some of them about the "First Noel" according to God's Word and planted some gospel seeds. On the 24th we invited those who do not have family in the area to come to our place for an evening of snacks and table games. We took time to thank our heavenly Father for the Gift He gave to mankind so many years ago. New Year's Eve - Colombian Style New Year's Eve is another big event for Colombians. Once more they gather with family and friends and indulge in all kinds of rituals to provide good fortune for the coming year. From wearing the right color of underwear to eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight to dragging a suitcase around the block and burning incense in the home, many Colombians seek blessings for the new year - while forgetting to seek the Author of Life in first place. Our Version Once more we extended the invitation to gather at our place for snacks and board games. We fired up the grill and roasted the meat and ripe plantains. Just prior to midnight we took time to thank God for the blessings received (including the struggles and difficulties) during 2016 and to ask for His blessing in the coming year, concluding our prayer as fireworks (still forbidden, yet even more present than the week before) crackled and roared around the city.
THANK YOU! 2016 was a real blessing to us in many ways. We are humbled by your generous and faithful support of the work that Christ is doing through us here in Pereira. We continually see new ways in which Christ is working in different people's lives as we share the Gospel of His Grace with them. We are seeing seeds planted years ago still producing fruit and for this we praise God and thank Him for working through you to allow us to continue ministry here in Colombia. May 2017 be a year of great blessing in your own life and ministry as you continue to serve Christ in your corner of His great harvest field.

What are we to Believe? By Lowell Hall
Th e words believe, believed, and belief appeared frequently in the
Bible. In the New Testament these words have taken on new meaning because of the object of their action. Over and over believing is emphasized as essential in our relationship to God and to Jesus the Christ.
The article in the January Newsletter concerned “Hearing” as the first step in our path to Salvation. The message was the “Good News” of God’s gift of His Son Jesus the Christ. Jesus experienced a miraculous birth, at the age of 30 years he committed Himself to proclaiming that “the kingdom of God is near,” performed miracles of healing, and eventually was arrested, convicted, and executed. The great and marvelous event was His resurrection from the dead. His death on the cross was for our sins and made it possible for us to be forgiven by God. By God’s great love and mercy we can have an eternal life after death with Him. This was the Good News that was proclaimed for everyone to “Hear.”
Not everyone who hears the message about God and Jesus is ready to accept and respond. Jesus “Parable of the sower” clearly illustrates this point. (See: Mark 4:1-20).
It may take a long time for some people to begin to “Believe.” Some Christians grow up in the church and over time they develop “Believing”. For others, Belief comes later in life and under different circumstances.
What must we believe?
There are dozens of churches in our community and they have different sets of rules or beliefs which they feel are essential to salvation. In some churches
you are required to “accept” and “live by their set of rules” in order to become a member of their church. Of course they point to Bible references as the authority for what they insist are essentials.
The New Testament does not have a list or set of rules. There are passages that set forth how we can come to God and live in this close relationship with Him. The closest statement setting forth what is essential is found in Romans. (Romans 10:9-10). It sets forth what we should believe and then what our response should be.
At the end of his sermons, Pastor Tim extends an invitation to anyone who desires to except Jesus Christ. When a person responds, Pastor Tim has them
affirm a very simple statement.
“I believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God and I accept Him as my Lord and Savior.”
Believing and affirming this statement has carried many of us one more step into Salvation with God.
Do you remember when you first believed in “Jesus as the Christ the
Son of the living God?” What a glorious day that was when we came to believe that “Jesus was the Son of God and we eagerly wanted to accept Him as our Lord and Savior.”
Sincere belief motivates a response. March’s eNewsletter article will set forth the response which is “Repentance.”
God Bless!

Reformed Reflections Politics and Religion Come
Face to Face
By Brad Krantz
H istory was made
recently in the
inauguration of
our 45th President, Donald
J. Trump on Friday,
January 20th. He’s the
oldest person ever elected;
and a man who has never
held public office before.
He’s been at the forefront
of immense controversy
throughout his campaign and resulting
election, but is now our elected
President. For the next 4 years,
whether we, as Americans rejoice at
this or are angry about it, we must
live with this fact. Though I did not
vote for him (or his opponent,
Clinton), and had many reservations
about his conduct and actions, I will
accept him as our President and give
him a chance to show forth his
leadership. Here’s why.
There has never before been such a
polarizing event surrounding the
transition of power to a new President.
The subsequent protests and
demonstrations have been troubling to
say the least and also something
we’ve never before seen in our
country’s history. Yet, as we within the
Church – both visible and invisible-
live and work within this tension and
drama, let us be mindful of our
calling: We are to be in prayer for our
Nation, President, and for that matter,
all our elected officials!
Franklin Graham quoted and
prayed 1 Timothy 2:1-3ff, in his
prayer following the Oath of
Office: “Therefore I exhort first
of all that supplications,
prayers, intercessions, and
giving of thanks be made for all
men, for kings and all who are
in authority, that we may lead a
quiet and peaceable life in all
godliness and reverence…”
Easier said than done, but this is what
we’re called to do. First, we’re
exhorted to prayer and intercession
for all men, king and all who are in
authority. It does not direct us to what
type of person(s) they are or what
their conduct or actions must be.
Then, we do this because it leads to us
leading quiet and peaceable lives in all
godliness and reverence. This is in
stark contrast to the chaotic display of
behavior of many protesters and
rioters. While we may either like the
outcome or be depressed about it, we
as Christians, can and should be in
prayer.
In a slightly different context, we had
36 Christian leaders who promoted a
letter circulated prior to the
inauguration titled, “Appeal to
Christians Regarding President-Elect
Page 9 Highline eConnection
Politics & Religion (continued from page 8)
Donald Trump.”1 While I personally
think it was a bit of a double-standard
given the composition and background
of many of the petitioners, I would
agree with their main thrust: “In these
times of difficult conversations and
sometimes fractious words, we
celebrate the political diversity of our
churches. We are thankful that the
U.S. church is not beholden to any
political party.” They offered 5 points
in the way of prayer:
1. We will pray for President-
elect Trump, elected officials, our
nation, our churches, and each other.
2. Rooted in the teachings of Jesus
and the prophets, we will tell the truth
about the world around us, and we will
speak up for those who have been
marginalized and taken advantage of.
3. We will actively resist the
temptation to overlook or normalize
values, speech, and behavior that are
in conflict with what Scripture calls us
to.
4. In the name of Jesus, we call
President-elect Trump to repentance
for dishonoring the image of God in
others.
5. We will fix our eyes on Jesus and,
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
redouble our efforts to honor the
image of God in all people and to love
all our neighbors as ourselves.
Then we have, Cultural-commentator
Russell Moore, a theologian and
president of the Ethics & Religious
Liberty Commission of the Southern
Baptist Convention writing in his
1/20/17 blog, “Christians, Let’s Pray
for President Trump.” It should be
known that Moore is no fan of Trump
and has publicly voiced his views
despite receiving the ire of many of his
colleagues. He stated in part;
“Consistently, no matter who is in
office we are to pray for success. That
doesn’t mean we pray for all of any
leader’s ideas to be realized. But it
means that we pray that he or she
would succeed, would carry out an
agenda that leads to the flourishing of
the rest of society and, particularly, so
that the church may “lead a peaceful
and quiet life, godly and dignified in
every way.” In contemporary
American society, we’re supposed to
want those we like to leave office as
heroes and those we don’t to bumble
and fail. That should never be our
attitude.
As Donald Trump takes office as the
45th President of the United States, we
should pray that his presidency is a
great and good one. That prayer
applies to all, whether someone voted
for the current president or not. Those
who like the new president should
pray that he governs so successfully
that their hopes are realized. Those
who don’t like the new president
should pray that, at the end of his
Page 10 Highline eConnection
Politics & Religion (continued from page 9)
term if not before, they are surprised
that they were wrong.”2
We might ask, what’s the good of
prayer? Oswald Chambers asked this
question and had this observation to
offer, and it has resonated with me as
one of my favorite quotations about
prayer: “It is only when a man
flounders beyond any grip of himself
and cannot understand things that he
really prays. Prayer is an interruption
to personal ambition, and no man who
is busy has time to pray. What will
suffer is the life of God in him, which
is nourished not by food but by
prayer. If we look on prayer as a
means of developing ourselves, there
is nothing in it at all, nor do we find
that idea of prayer in the Bible. Prayer
is other than meditation; it is that
which develops the life of God in us.”3
These are words of wisdom.
Regardless of our feelings toward our
newly-elected President, we should
ultimately pray for him. Remember,
that by doing so we’ll help develop the
life of God in us.

“Anticipate Sundays” for Sunday School Parents Last month we started something new; a parent/teacher
connecting time at the start of the 9:00 a.m. worship service.
Unfortunately, it was also January 1st and we had snow so we
only had a handful of children in class that day.
The first Sunday of February we are going to try it again with the
goal of continuing the connecting meetings through May. The first
Sunday of each month from now until May will be an Anticipate
Sunday for students 1st-6th grade and their parents. We will
begin Sunday School in the Activity Center from 8:50-9:10 a.m.
for an opportunity for the kids to begin connecting with the lesson and for parents and
teachers to have an opportunity to connect with each other.
We hope you will join us for this brief meet as we continue to seek ways to partner together.

Love and Respect This month the learning environment highlighted in the Homefront Magazine is the
environment of Love and Respect. I believe there are many ways in which we begin to teach
our children what it means to love and respect people, but I think one of the most important is
given to us in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus said “do to others as we would want them to
do to us.” (Matt. 7:12) How do we expect our children to show loving respect to us as parents?
Now the hard question, do you respect your children in the same way you expect them to
respect you? Spend some time this month reflecting on your actions toward your children and
ask the Holy Spirit to reveal how to love and respect them as Jesus would if He were you.
