The history of Balbriggan

INTRO
• HI MY NAME IS AOIFE AND I’M HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE HISTORY OF BALBRIGGAN HOPE YOU ENJOY IT.
Boathouse
• Detached single bay two storey boathouse,built in 1889.
• Located beside the train station. • The lighthouse
The lighthouse
• The lighthouse was built in 1761.• The pier was built by the
honourable George Hamilton /of Hampton in the county of Dublin.
• The lighthouse has a flat roof with a light positioned on the top.
The Harbour
• The harbour was built in 1761• It was made out of large limestone
with concrete poured on the main pathway.
• It is positioned at the end of the east pier.
Balbriggan 1641-1841
• Unlike the neighbouring ancient manors of Balrothery,Balscadden,and Bremore,the town of Balbriggan has a shorter meteoric history.
• The figures from the 1659 census of the population reflect the contrast in size with the villages of Balrothery and Balscadden.

• Balbriggan 26 Irish,4 English =30 total
• Balrothery 149 Irish,55 English =204 total
• Balscadden 167 Irish,23 English=190 total
Balbriggan spelling
Balbriggan can be spelt lots of
different ways.It’s spelled variously as Ballybriggen,Balbriggen,and Balbriggan the towns name is said by writer P.W.joyce.
The building of the Harbour 1761-1765• The Barnwell ‘dynasty’ was replaced
by the powerful family in the early 18th century.• The harbour is 600 feet in length.
• The little port was very quickly prospered.
Sarah Ann
• Shortly before 9 pm ,in Balbriggan a ship called the Sarah Ann was seen a mile away from land. It was having major difficulty.Every minute that went by things were getting worse.

• The crew on board the Sarah Ann were’nt in luck.Soon after a local man Mr.D’alton and his two sons attempted to save the crew of schooner but to know avail.
• A while later it had appeared that the masters body was found on deck, where he appeared to have died by the falling of the mainmast.
Working lighthouse
• As I was reading the fingal independent newspaper I came across an article saying that the green party leader Trevor sargent td,has being campaing to get a working lighthouse in place of the old one. Trevor has been looking for lantern but the few he could find were too big. He will be continuing his search and I hope he will be successful.

• That’s my project on the history of Balbriggan pier and harbour.
