4) From Village to City

With the development of agriculture, people settled into farming villages. Over time, some

of these villages grew into large cities.

3) Natural Highways

River travel allowed early civilization to trade surplus goods, and new ideas. 2) New Activities

Food surplus allowed people to pursue other activities like crafts, art, and writing. In fact, writing emerged in part to track the surplus.

1) Gift of the River

River water was key to farming in early civilizations. Water was used for crops. This

also led to people living near crops in villages.
