THE WORD OF GODI
The people are seated for the reading of the Holy Gospel and the Carols.
THE GOSPEL The Christmas Story according to Luke • Luke 2:1-20
IN those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be
registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child.
CAROL O little town of Bethlehem • St. Louis • Hymnal 79, st. 1
O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
THE GOSPEL, continued
WHILE they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her
firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
CAROL Once in royal David’s city • Irby • Hymnal 102, st. 1, 2
Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.
He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor, the scorned, the lowly, lived on earth our Savior holy.
THE GOSPEL, continued
IN that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the
4
heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”
CAROL Angels we have heard on high • Gloria • Hymnal 96, st. 1
Angels we have heard on high, singing sweetly through the night,
And the mountains in reply echoing their brave delight.
Refrain
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
Gloria in excelsis Deo.
THE GOSPEL, continued
WHEN the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let
us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.
CAROL What child is this • Greensleeves • Hymnal 115, st. 1
What child is this, who, laid to rest, on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?
Refrain
This, this, is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.
THE GOSPEL, continued
WHEN they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who
heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
CAROL Go tell it on the mountain • Go Tell It on the Mountain • Hymnal 99
The people remain seated for the Sermon.
A CHRISTMAS STORY Paul Nancarrow
The people stand for the Nicene Creed, the Prayers of the People, and the Peace.

THE NICENE CREED Said by all
WE believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
After each intercession
We pray to you, O Lord: Lord, hear our prayer.
Final intercession
Joining our voices with the blessed Virgin Mary, and all the saints and angels of God, let us offer ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ. To you, O Lord.
Concluding Collect
Source of light and gladness, accept the prayers we offer on this joyful feast. May the Rising Sun of Christ spread across the world and brighten all humanity; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
THE PEACE All stand
The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.
The people greet one another with a sign of God’s peace and then are seated.

THE HOLY COMMUNIONI
THE OFFERTORY
The people remain seated while their offerings of bread and wine are brought forward and their monetary gifts are received. The collection taken at this liturgy is divided between the maintenance and mission of Trinity Episcopal Church and the charitable causes we support. We are grateful for your generous giving.
OFFERTORY ANTHEM ’Twas in the moon of wintertime • Michael Bedford
’Twas in the moon of wintertime when all the birds had fled, that God the Lord of all the earth sent angel choirs instead; before their light the stars grew dim, and wondering hunters heard the hymn: Jesus your king is born, Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria. The earliest moon of wintertime is not so round and fair as the ring of glory on the helpless infant there. The chiefs from far before him knelt with gifts of fox and beaver pelt. Jesus your king is born, Jesus is born, in excelsis gloria. O children of the forest free, the angel song is true, the holy child of earth and heaven is born today for you. Come kneel before the radiant boy, who brings you beatuty, peace and joy. Jesus your king is born, in excelsis gloria.
The people stand to sing the Presentation Hymn and remain standing through the Sanctus & Benedictus.
PRESENTATION HYMN Joy to the world! the Lord is come • Antioch • Hymnal 100, st.1
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING – EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B The Book of Common Prayer, p. 367
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.
IT is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
BECAUSE you gave Jesus Christ, your only Son, to be born for us; who by the mighty power of
the Holy Spirit, was made perfect Man of the flesh of the Virgin Mary his mother; so that we might be delivered from the bondage of sin, and receive power to become your children.
THEREFORE we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS & BENEDICTUS Sung by all Franz Schubert • Hymnal S 130
The people remain standing or kneel. The presider continues with the Eucharistic Prayer. BCP p. 368
WE give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in
creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
8
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
OUR Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
