AS WE GATHER

Today, we come face to face with the great mystery of God — that God is one and that this one God is three persons. We confess the Triune God; the Father from whom all things come, the Son who is the incarnate Lord Jesus Christ, and the Spirit who proceeds from the Father through the Son. This great festival begins a whole new chapter of the Church Year in which the focus shifts from the events in the life of our Lord Jesus to His teachings in which He reveals the Triune God and His kingdom. This year, we start with the story of the order created by God, destroyed by sin, and restored in Jesus Christ.

INVOCATION

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. -/ CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (sit or kneel)

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflections of the heart.)

Standing at the foot of the cross, let us confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy, has given His Son to die for you, and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As your called and ordained servant of the Word, I announce the forgiveness of our sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty and everlasting God, You have given us grace to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity by the confession of a true faith and to worship the Unity in the power of the Divine Majesty. Keep us steadfast in this faith and defend us from all adversities; for You, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, live and reign, one God, now and forever.

- FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-4

(In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.)

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING Acts 2:14, 22-36

(Let all know that God has made Him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus who is crucified.)

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know–23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; 6 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope. 27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ 29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 35 until I make your enemies your footstool.”’ 36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 28:16-20

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 28th chapter.

(Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of

the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.)

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

PROCLAMATION OF FAITH – APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

SANCTUS

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Almighty and merciful Father, we give thanks for all Your mercies–for the glory of Your creation and especially for Your saving love revealed in Jesus Christ. Send down upon us Your Holy Spirit, and through Your Word bless and sanctify these gifts of Your own creation as this bread and wine is the body and blood of Your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. WORDS OF INSTITUTION

13

PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

AGNUS DEI

(be seated)

If you will not be communing, we invite you forward to receive a blessing. Please fold your arms across your chest as a sign that you desire to receive a spoken blessing rather than the bread and wine.

Please note: Communion grape juice is purple in color and communion wine is clear in color.

-HOLY COMMUNION By participating in Holy Communion, you are acknowledging that you are baptized, that you acknowledge your sinfulness and believe that, through this Sacrament, our Lord offers himself for the forgiveness of sins and spiritual nourishment and refreshment. Your participation is a statement that you accept what the Scriptures teach: that the real presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ are received in faith together with the bread and wine of Holy Communion. If this is your faith, we welcome you to the Lord’s Table.
