For over two centuries guests have sought out TheHomestead for the pure relaxation of our tranquilmountain setting, our soothing, natural mineralspring waters, and the myriad activities that invigorateand restore the spirit. Today we welcome you to enjoythe same experience.

When Captain Thomas Bullett founded TheHomestead back in 1766, everyone arrived on horse-back. Today our new Equestrian Center provides car-riage and horseback rides, with the same gentle trailsand grand vistas that those long-ago visitors traversed.

For centuries our legendary natural mineral springwaters have been famous, and today you can follow inthe footsteps of Thomas Jefferson and so many othersto “Take the Waters,” for this is much more thanrelaxation: it is the source of authentic restoration.

Golf, tennis, bowling and croquet all arrived at TheHomestead in 1892, and continue to be immenselypopular family activities. Today golf is a source ofrelaxation, a challenge, and a way of life on our threechampionship courses.

Seventeen Presidents of the United States have visitedThe Homestead, enjoying every activity already men-tioned and many more: walking beautiful trails; flyfishing the Cascades; trap, skeet and English sportingclays; skiing and ice skating; tennis; and our very old-est sport -- savoring our superb cuisine complementedby fine wines, just as Thomas Jefferson did when hedined here on August 13, 1818.

Jefferson Pools

The history of the springs of Virginia is a rich and variedone. In the late 1700’s, the aristocracy of Virginia discov-ered the pleasures of going up to the springs in the earlysummer and cavorting in pleasant company for severalmonths before retiring, as colder weather came on, to thelowlands again. It was fashionable in those days to movefrom one spring to another; from the Warm (nowJefferson Pools) to the Hot, from the Hot to the Sweet, from the Sweet to the White, and so on - virtually enmasse, in a group composed of the highest society of thetimes.

The Jefferson Pools, located five miles from TheHomestead, were the gateway to the tour of the springs. The Men’s Pool opened June 1, 1761, and the Ladies’Pool, on June 1, 1836. The two covered pools and thesheltered “drinking spring” have been preserved in theirnatural, if not their original, condition. Time has agedthe bathhouses, and boards have been replaced from timeto time, but the scene is not far from that which greetedthe eyes of visitors even before the first Homestead wasbuilt at Hot Springs. The temperature of the water variesonly a degree or two from 96 degrees throughout the year.

THE EXPERIENCEBegin this historic therapy just as Thomas Jefferson did in1818: with a soothing soak in the mineral-rich, naturallywarm spring waters. Adjourn to a private treatment roomfor an expert 50-minute massage using our exclusive oilsinfused with the strength of natural mountain ginseng.Perfect relief for the stress and tensions of everyday life!

The curative potency of ginseng enhances this50-minute massage, restoring your own natural balanceand serenity.
