Indians Season Comes To An EndAt The Hands Of De ance
TOLEDO 3/8/14The tone was setfrom the very rst possession in the Di-vision II Boys District Final matchup be-tween the Wauseon Indians and the De-
ance Bulldogs. Bulldog senior Will Battdrilled a three with less than 30 secondsoff the clock, and that would be the story
of the night. The Indian defense would beunable to slow down the three point bar-rage by De ance, and would be defeatedby a score of 56-42.
Although they fell to an early 3-0 de -cit, the Tribe was able to regain their com-posure, and battle with the Bulldogs forthe early part of the contest. Wauseon wasable to come within a 5-4 margin, but thenBatt his second three point shot of theopening quarter, putting De ance backup by four. But the Indians would answerright back, as Jacob Newlove launched atre of his own that landed, making it 8-7 infavor of the Bulldogs with 3:55 left in theopening period. Trey Guilliam then hit t woconsecutive threes of his own, the secondof which gave De ance a 14-9 lead with
just under two minutes remaining in therst quarter of action. Wauseons defense
was able to hold off anymore scoring fromDe ance for the rest of the rst quarter, and the Indians capitalize, scoring the lastfour points of the half as Corry Byers andNewlove each respectively put down layupsto make it 14-13 at the end of the rstquarter, with De ance in the lead.
The Tribe took their rst lead of the con-test at the 7:43 mark of the second stanza,as Corry Byers would hit, you guessed it, athree pointer, putting Wauseon in control16-14. De ance sunk a pair of free throwsto tie the game up, and it would remaintied until the 4:36 remaining in the halfwhen Byers converted two free throws, andit was Wauseon with an 18-16 lead mid-way through the second quarter. It wasntlong, however, until the Bulldog shoot-ers would again come alive, making fourstraight three pointers to give them eighttotal threes in the rst half, and a 28-18lead. The Tribe was able to end the halfon a high note however, when Newlove hithis second triple of the contest to cut theBulldog lead to seven, 28-21 which wouldremain the score in to the intermission.
The Tribe hoped to slow down the threepoint attack of the Bulldogs in the sec-ond half of action, but De ance had otherplans as they would yet again put downtwo more shots from behind the arc, oneat the 7:30 mark, and the other at the5:05 mark. At this point, the Bulldogs
had made seven straight three pointersrom the 4:03 mark of the second quarterthrough the 5:05 mark of the third, out-scoring Wauseon 21-3 in that span, andincreasing their lead to 34-21 over the redand white. At the end of the third quarter,De ance held a 43-32 lead over Wauseon.
The fourth and nal quarter of play, and of the season for the Tribe, would gowithout a score until Noah Castle drove tothe basket, while getting fouled, and con-verting an old fashioned three point playto draw Wauseon within eight, 43-35,but that would be the closest the Indianswould be able to get. De ance slowed thegame down, de ating both the basketballand the Indians chances of a comeback.Any score that the Tribe made, the Bull-dogs were able to answer, and as the -nal buzzer rang on the Indians 2013-2014
campaign, the scoreboard read 56-42 infavor of the De ance Bulldogs.
The Indians nished the season with a19-7 record, and the Wauseon High Schooltrophy case will be home to a district run-ner-up trophy. On the season, Wauseonaveraged 54.6 points per game, while giv-ing up an average of only 43 points pergame. Wauseon will lose seniors Kris Boy-sel, Corry Byers, and Alec Lillich to grad-uation, but return three starters (NoahCastle, Zac Robinson, and Jacob Newlove)along with Zach Johnson who saw consid-erable playing time throughout the year.
In the contest with the Bulldogs, Castleand Byers both set the pace with 12 pointsa piece. Newlove contributed eight to theIndian cause, Johnson had six, and MasonCreager nished with two.
Congrats to the Indians on a great sea-son, and congratulations also go out totheir seniors on ne careers.

TAKING THE BALL TO THE HOOP ... Jacob Newlove drives to the basket against De -ance Saturday during the District championship game.
Wauseon Continues Incredible TournamentRun, Knocking Off Scott 57-55
TOLEDO 3/5/2014The Wauseon In-dians are riding a tournament hot streakthat started against Napoleon, contin-ued against Bryan, and rolled on throughagainst the Scott Bulldogs, as the Tribetook down the Bulldogs 57-55, advancingto the district nals.
Wauseon controlled the tip off, butthe night started off shaky for the Tribeas Scotts Chris Darrington stole a passaway, and took the ball the length of thecourt, throwing down a slam dunk, andgiving Scott an early 2-0 lead. This starteda 7-2 Bulldog run, and the Tribe was down
ve after three minutes of play. Wauseon
Head Coach Chad Burt called a timeout, attempting to regroup his team, and itworked. The Indians rst eld goal of thecontest came at the the 4:54 mark of theopening quarter of action, as junior ZacRobinson drained a three pointer, draw-ing the Indians within two, 7-5. Kris Boy-sel followed with a pair of free throws, twoof the six free throws he would make inthe quarter, tying the contest up at sevena piece with 3:47 remaining in the period.Scotts offense picked the pace back upin the nal three minutes of the openingquarter, pushing their lead to 18-13. Thatwas until Robinson lined up and nailedhis second three pointer of the night rightbefore the buzzer sounded to end the rstquarter, brining Wauseon within two. Asthe rst quarter drew to a close, Scott heldan 18-16 lead over Wauseon.
Boysel opened the second quarter witha strong drive to the basket, tying thegame for Wauseon, and sparking somemajor momentum for the Indians. Krisperformance was huge. He has improvedindividually as much as any player I havecoached, from the beginning of the seasonto the end of the season Indian CoachChad Burt said I think its a con dencething. His rebounding has been the un-sung key for him. The Tribe and the Bull-dogs traded buckets, with Wauseon tyingthe contest several times, but being unableto take a lead until the 5:10 mark of thesecond quarter, when junior Jacob New-love attacked the basket, putting Wauseonup 24-22. With Noah Castle picking uphis second foul, Zach Johnson stepped uphuge for the Tribe off the bench, scoringfour points on consecutive possessions.
Johnsons buckets gave Wauseon a 32-28with two minutes remaining in the rsthalf. At the 1:30 mark, Scotts Trey Brownwas able to convert an old fashion threepoint play, making it a one point contest,32-31. Neither team would be able to ndthe bucket for the remainder of the half, and it was the Tribe who held a 32-31 leadat the end of the rst half of action.
Defense, as it has been much of theseason, was the key for Wauseon in thethird quarter. Weve hung our hat ourthe defensive end all year. Our goal wasto turn them in to a jump shooting team, and I think overall we did that Coach Burtsaid. This was never more evident than inthe third quarter, as Wauseon held Scottto only ve points. Castles defense wasa key aspect of the Indians game plan in
the quarter as he was able to battle withScott big man Percy Bogan, forcing Bo-gan to pick up four fouls midway throughthe quarter, and having to sit out of thecontest to avoid getting his fth. The Tribewas able to capitalize on the offensive end, going on a 10-0 run in the nal ve min-utes of the third quarter, capped off by athunderous dunk by Boysel, igniting theWauseon bench and Indian faithful in thestands. At the end of three quarters of
play, Wauseon had jumped out to a 43-36lead, and were eight minutes away from atrip to the district championship game.
The Bulldogs were not going to go outeasy though, and would make sure the
Tribe would have to earn the victory. Dar-rington looked to get his team back in thecontest, scoring six points four minutes into the contest, and narrowing the Indianlead to only three, 48-45 with 4:30 left inthe contest. Wauseons offense again foundtheir groove after a slow start to the quar-ter, scoring seven straight points, bookended by another three point shot by Rob-inson, giving the Tribe their biggest lead ofthe night at ten. Scotts Bogan also pickedup his fth foul and was forced to sit forthe remained of the game. With 1:50 sec-onds left, Wauseon held a 55-45 lead, andit seemed as if the Indians were poised tosimply cruise to a victory, but the Bulldogshad other plans. Scott forced the Wauseonto commit a couple of turnovers, and afterholding a ten point lead, suddenly with aminute left, it was a four point contest 57-53. Scott set up their offense, but the In-dian defense made it dif cult to get a goodlook at the basket. One of the big posses-sions for us was when we were up four andthey had the ball with about 40 secondsleft said Coach Burt They couldnt get ashot off. Finally at about 20 seconds theygot a shot off, and we were able to get a de-fensive rebound. If they get a score in thatsituation, and they are down two with 30
seconds left, it would have put us on ourheels even more. Our guys did a great jobrecognizing that was a huge defensive pos-session for us. The Indians were able toweather the Bulldog storm. Scott was stilldown four with twelve seconds left. TheBulldogs hit a shot from the post with twoseconds left, but it was to no avail, as theIndians held on to claim a 57-55 win.
Castle was proud of the way his teamplayed. Theyre a really good team. Wehave struggled this year against teamsthat liked to get up and down the court, but tonight I think we proved to a lot ofpeople, and even to ourselves, that we canhang with some tough teams in a divisionsaid Castle.
Boysel set the pace on the offensive endfor the Indians, scoring 16 points. CorryByers followed with 11, Castle contributed
ten, Robinson scored nine, Newlove put upseven, and Johnson rounded out the scor-ing for the Tribe with four.

De ant Pettisville Blackbirds Bow Out Of Districts Versus Wayne Trace
By: Timothy KaysTHE VILLAGE REPORTER
VAN WERT: March 4, 2014 The Pettisville Blackbirds, champions of the BryanD-IV Sectionals and co-champions of the BBC, took their show on the road to TheDen in Van Wert to take on the D-IV and GMC champion Wayne Trace Raiders in theopening round of the D-IV Districts. The task ahead of the Battling 'Birds was, in aword, daunting.
Pettisville came into the game with a 13-11 record after escaping the North CentralEagles on a buzzer beater by Korben Rychener to cut the nets in Bryan. Wayne Trace,as Pettisville quickly found out, is no North Central.
The Eagles had one man over six feet in height in stature...Chase Legacy at 6' 4".Pettisville also had one man over six foot...Austin Dykstra at 6' 2". The parity in sizeand speed made for a great championship game, but with the Districts now in play, the Blackbirds were looking at something that they had not seen all season.
The Pettisville roster has 10 players, two of which are six foot and over. The#10-ranked Raiders have 13 on their roster, only two of which are UNDER six feet.
The other eleven players that make up the Raiders are at least six feet in height. It gotmore daunting from there for the Pettisville boys considering that four are 6' 3", twoare 6' 5" and one is 6' 6". In what initially appeared to be a basketball match betweenthe Gullivers and the Lilliputians, there came into play two factors that do not appearon any stat sheet or program guide though...the speed and heart of Pettisville. Whenthe Raiders were poised to stomp the Blackbirds like grapes, those two factors frus-trated the giants, and although Wayne Trace eventually prevailed by a 47-37 score, they were only able to do so by burying free throws down the stretch.
Pettisville scored rst on an Austin Dykstra bucket, but the Raiders were quickto reply. At that point, using their superior height at every position, it looked like theRaiders were simply going to squash the Blackbirds with their size advantage, butthe Pettisville boys did what they do best to get back into the game...remain cool andramp up the speed. The Raiders' momentum was slowed, and the Blackbirds beganto get back into the ow of the game.
Their speed left the Wayne Trace squad at times looking like giants swatting aties, and as a result they began to rack up fouls. The advantage did not immediately
shift to Pettisville though, as Wayne Trace Coach Jim Linder simply replaced one gi-ant with another, but it did accelerate the pace to which the Blackbirds were able toget into the one-and-one free throw opportunities. By the end of the rst period, Pet-tisville had climbed back to within a bucket at 10-8, and they continued to buzz theball around the perimeter with quick, precision passing in the second, allowing themto not just tie the game, but also to reclaim slim one point leads before going into the
half tied at 18-18. The start of the second half proved to be the deciding factor in the game as a se-
ries of Pettisville turnovers turned into Wayne Trace transitional points, giving thema lead that they would not surrender. The rst four Blackbirds' possessions becameturnovers and transitional points as the Raiders clamped down with a trapping 1-3-1zone. The Raiders carried a 31-23 lead into the fourth, but they were never able toget the Boys in Black out of their rearview mirrors as the persistent Pettisville speedcontinued to harass and push their opponents.
The Battling 'Birds again began the steep climb out of the hole, but this time it wassimply too deep, and the Wayne Trace defense too strong to allow many open looks.
To make matters worse, the war of attrition in fouls was beginning to take its toll onthe Blackbirds, but they did not enjoy the same bench depth that the Raiders did. When top defender in Jeremy Mann fouled out with 1:47 left in the game and Pettis-ville down by ve, the uphill climb only became steeper, and when Korben Rychenergave his nal foul a minute later, the task became even harder. The Raiders madegood on their free throw opportunities down the stretch to expand the lead out to tenat the nal buzzer.
"We knew they were going to bring the heat; we knew that we were going to have toanswer, and obviously we did," said Pettisville Head Coach Greg Nofziger. "I thoughtthat the kids battled back in the fourth. We had to sit down and just play one posses-sion at a time, and I thought that we were trying to make some runs, but obviouslywe dug ourselves too deep of a hole in the third...and they're too good of a team to bedown to like that. You can't get down to a team that has that much quality all the wayaround and give them ten points...that just doesn't work."
The defeat ends the Blackbirds' season, as well as the careers of seniors Mann,Dykstra, Rychener and Jacob Reyes. "Jacob Reyes had a great attitude for us all
year, and he really improved for us from the start of the year to the end of the year,"Coach Nofziger said as he talked about his seniors. "Jeremy Mann just became ourdefensive stopper...he did an excellent job all year long. It's kind of a thankless job,but he certainly stepped up and did it. Dykstra, as the season progressed, he becamemore and more of a leader on our rebounding, and did an excellent job for us downthe stretch. Korben Rychener...when the season started, Korben maybe didn't knowhe was our leader, but he was. As the season progressed, he found out that he was.We had con dence in him; he had con dence in himself and just had a great year."
Rychener hung up his high tops with a team high 12 points, while Tate Kauffmanhad 7 points and Dykstra 6. Josh Liechty nished with 5 points, Mann had 3, and EliKing and Noah Miller each had 2 points.

COLUMBUS: March 1, 2014 - TheWauseon Indians Bowling Team competed
in the D-II State Final semi nals at WayneWebbs Columbus Bowl on March 1. Un-fortunately for the Tribe, they placed 14thoverall, eliminating them from the eight-team cut that moves on to contend for thechampionship.
The Tribe did not have a strong round ofregular games, racking up just 2451 pins.
The strength of the team all year thoughhas been the Baker games. This day how-ever, the Baker game boom needed by the
Tribe never came to pass as they were onlyable to slam a 555.
Kevin Moden closes his Wauseon ca-reer with a high series of 557, while NoahStickley rolled the high game of 204.
Head Coach Pat Carr said of the tour-nament run, This was a new experience;I have learned a lot, and will be better pre-pared for the new year. Of the nal charge
in Columbus, Coach Carr said, The team just couldnt get started until the thirdgame and the third Baker game, and thenit was too late. We were down too manypins to make it up in Bakers, which hasbeen our strength this year. Kevin Moden, with a new ball, bowled well with a 557,and Noah Stickley bowled the teams highgame with a 204. It has been a great sea-
son with the Wauseon Boys Bowling Teamand with only losing one senior, Kevin
Moden, I look forward to another great sea-son next year! While fourteenth may not sound spec-
tacular, it is important to put all things inperspective. In just our little corner of thestate, there are 35 teams in the OHSAAD-II Northwest District. Add up all the D-IIteams from the other six districts aroundthe state, and being #14 out of that num-ber says plenty about the great season the
Tribe had, as well as the talent level of theteam. They were the rst and only teamto roll a 300 Baker game during the regu-lar season. During the postseason, theywere the lone NWOAL team in Columbus, and became yet another Wauseon Indiansteam with OHSAA state nals experience.

CANTON, OHIO (February 19, 2014) - The Northwest District was representedwell at the Division 2 Boys and Girls StateDiving Meet on 2/19.
Local divers representing the district forthe Boys were: Brandon Poncsak (Bryan)and Hunter Rex (Napoleon). Both Brandonand Hunter made it to the nal round ofthe State Meet, receiving All-Ohio Honors.Brandon completed the meet for a 13thplace nish while Freshman Hunter Rex
nishing in 14th place. Both very goodnishes in a competitive Division 2 Boys
event at the State Meet. Brandon nishedhis High School Diving Career very strong-ly. Kyle, a Freshman, made a very impres-sive showing at the State Meet and willlook to improve on that nish next year.
For the girls; local divers lead by SeniorAspen Flood (Napoleon) competed at a verytight Division 2 Girls State Diving event.Other local divers representing the North-west District at the State Competition were
Jordan Sloan and Patience Bachman, bothof Wauseon. Aspen Flood (Senior, Napo-leon) and Jordan Sloan (Junior, Wauseon)both earned All-Ohio Honors nishing 15thand 16th respectively. Aspen Flood looksto continue her diving career at the Univer-sity of Toledo this fall. Freshman, PatienceBachman, nished in 21st place at theState Meet which was lled with many Ju-nior and Senior divers. Both Jordan andPatience look to return to the state meetand improve on their nishes next year.
Wauseon Coach, Tom Burkholder, wasvery happy with how all the local divers didat the State Meet.
I couldnt be happier about how all of
the local divers did this week in Canton. It was nice to see Brandon and Aspen n-ish their High School Careers on such ahigh note. It was also rewarding to seethe younger divers do a great job at themeet. These athletes have to be proudabout how they did. Their months of hardwork and early practices have payed off. Iknow Napoleon has more young talent that
just missed the State Meet this year andthey will be exciting to watch in the future.Bryan also has a few younger divers thatcontinue to develop. Wauseon also hasnumerous divers that just narrowly missedout on a State bid this year. You will seemany Wauseon and Napoleon Divers rep-resenting this District at the State Meet inthe years to come.
Wauseon divers competed very well atthe District Meet this year. Nine girls andnine boys qualify from the District Meet tocompete at State. Patience Bachman n-ished 5th place with a personal best scoreand received All-District Honors. JordanSloan placed 6th with a personal bestscore and also received All-District Honors. Both of these girls quali ed for the StateMeet. Freshman, Alexys Carteaux, placed12th at the District Meet; narrowly missingqualifying for state by 4.6 pts. She receivedAll-District Honors at the meet. Junior,Alexis Witt, placed 16th and received All-District Honors. Both Carteaux and Witthave promising futures as they also n-ished their seasons with personal bests atthe District Meet. Wauseon was also rep-resented by Cody Fry at the District Meet.Cody nished in 11th, narrowly missinga State bid. Cody left the meet with All-
District Honors and a personal best scoreto nish his 2nd year of High School Div-ing. Coach Burkholder emphasized howproud he was of the hard work that histeam put in this year. Many people do notrealize how much these athletes are at t hepool each day. A typical day often includes1.5 hours of practice in the morning beforeschool, followed by an hour of workouts af-ter school, then wrapping up with approxi-
mately 2 hours of boardwork at the endof the day. The Wauseon Team was alsowell represented throughout the dual meetseason by Raychel Ramos, Claudia Weber,Shayla Gates, and Jenna Rhodes. Manyof these divers who do not participate in aspring sport are already back in the poolworking to grow and mature as divers.
