States join forces to fight virusA cross-border task force will beformed to investigate theHendra virus following a recentspate of cases in NSW andQueensland, NSW PremierBarry O’Farrell and QueenslandPremier Anna Bligh haveannounced. The taskforce will include ChiefVeterinarians, Chief HealthOfficers and Chief scientistsfrom both states as well as aCSIRO representative.Mr O’Farrell said the NSW-Queensland Taskforce wouldmeet urgently to examine thecurrent Hendra outbreaks andensure a consistent and co-ordi-nated approach in responding tothe disease.“Veterinary, medical and scien-tific experts will examine the cir-cumstances surrounding recentoutbreaks and lead a coordinat-ed cross-border response,” MrO’Farrell said.“This investigation will includethe risks associated with thevirus, property and animalbiosecurity to avoid infection, education and available science

and research, especially vaccinedevelopment.”NSW Primary IndustriesMinister Katrina Hodgkinsonsaid there had been two isolatedcases of Hendra virus, whichcan be passed to humans fromhorses, in northern NSW. “Flying foxes are known tospread the disease but there hasbeen no evidence of bat tohuman or human to human

infection,” she said. “This is also an opportunity tostudy risk factors peculiar toNSW including possible similar-ities between the recent out-breaks and spike in incidents.“Given the threat this virusposes, not only to animals, butalso to humans, we need to lookclosely at human risk factors toensure all is being done to pre-vent any human cases."

PROTECTING HORSESFROM HENDRA VIRUS

Horse owners can take thefollowing steps to reduce therisk of horses becominginfected with Hendra virus. This advice is based on thecurrent understanding of thevirus:

- Place horse water contain-ers under cover and feed ·horses under cover.

- Do not place horse feedand water containers undertrees, particularly if flyingfoxes are attracted to thosetrees.

- Do not use feed that mightbe attractive to flying foxesif they are known to be inthe area. Fruit and vegeta-bles (e.g. apples, carrots) oranything sweet (e.g.molasses).

- Do not allow horses to access the area under treesthat may be attractive tobats when the trees areflowering or fruiting. If pos-sible, remove horses frompaddocks when the trees areflowering and fruiting or, ifthis is not possible, fence ortape off the area under thetrees.

- Alternatively, stable horsesat high risk times when fruitbats are feeding or roostingin or around their paddocks.

- If it is not possible toremove horses from pad-docks, try to temporarilyremove your horses duringtimes of peak flying foxactivity (usually at dusk andduring the night).

While the exact route of infection is not known, it isthought that horses may contract Hendra virusinfection from eating food recently contaminatedby flying fox urine, saliva or birth products.

Disease in humansThe few known cases of human Hendra virusinfection have become unwell with:an influenza-like illness (which led to pneumonia inone case) with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache and tiredness and/orencephalitis (inflammation of the brain) with symp-toms such as headache, high fever, and drowsi-ness, which progressed to convulsions and/orcoma and death. Time from exposure of a person to a sick horseuntil the start of illness showing signs in humanshas been reported to be between five and 21days.

Disease in horsesSmall amounts of virus may be present in ahorse’s bodyfluids, particu-larly nasalsecretions, fora few daysbefore theybecome sick.Hendra virusinfection inhorses canproduce a wide range of signs. Early signs usually include:- fever, - increased heart rate and restlessness; - difficulty breathing and/or weakness, - neurological signs such as uncoordinated gaitand muscle twitching,.

What to look out for in both humans and horses

NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) has unveiled itslatest electronic communication tools to assist horse owners find thefacts on Hendra in the state. The Horse Report

Biosecurity Queensland is reminding peoplethat there are no general restrictions onhorse movements in Queensland.Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr RickSymons said Biosecurity Queensland hadreceived a number of enquiries from con-cerned horse owners wanting to know aboutmoving horses to and from events.“With a number of horse-related events onweekends, it is understandable that peopleare seeking information,” Dr Symons said.“Hendra virus is not highly infectious and, consequently, the horse industry is not sub-ject to movement restrictions for Hendravirus - except for the nine properties current-ly under quarantine.“Horse owners need to take precautions ontheir properties to protect their horses fromHendra virus infection.Dr Symons said although the current caseswere all located in the south-east region, horse owners across the state should be vigi-lant for signs consistent with Hendra virusinfection.“While people are free to move their horses,we would encourage them to practice goodbiosecurity practices and not travel, work onor take unwell horses to other properties orequestrian events.“A full list of precautions for owners to pro-tect their horses and themselves should theirhorses become sick is available atwww.biosecurity.qld.gov.au”

In Queensland, there are currently six sepa-rate locations where Biosecurity Queenslandis managing Hendra virus cases. These are located in the Beaudesert, MtAlford, Park Ridge, Kuranda, Hervey Bayand Boondall areas. The total number of properties quarantinedas a result of Hendra virus in Queensland is11.

Currently, 83 horses are being monitoreddaily. All horses currently appear to be clini-cally normal. There have been eight confirmed horsedeaths in Queensland since June 2011.Only the properties under quarantine forHendra virus have movement restrictions. It is vital that horse owners do not takeunwell horses to horse events and that theypractise good biosecurity before, during andafter the event. For information on biosecurity planning formanagers of all horse venues, includingracecourses, showgrounds, riding and ponyclub venues, agistment properties and horseevents, download the Horse VenueBiosecurity Workbook (PDF, 2.17 MB) orvisit the Animal Health Australia website.

Horse owners are urged to review theirbiosecurity procedures and contact a veteri-narian if they suspect Hendra virus. Horseowners around the state should be vigilantthroughout the year for signs consistent withHendra virus.

No restrictions for horse movements

Biosecurity Queensland says there are norestrictions on horse movements around

the state due to the Hendra virus outbreaks

e Being present during foaling can save livesBy GEORGIA KIRBY“We lost our foal last night.”“If we had been there we could have saved it.” These are the words I get greeted with fromdevastated horse breeders, time and time againover the breeding season. All the planning, nearly a year of waiting andthe financial and emotional investment, destroyed within minutes and in many casesit's preventable - just for the sake of being therewhen your mare foals. I hear many people say, “horses have been foal-ing by themselves for thousands of years, youshould leave them alone to foal”. This is a very naive way of thinking. Yes, wild horses foal alone, very successfullyand natural selection culls out those that don't.Once the horse was domesticated, we took thatnatural selection from them, we placed themin artificial surroundings, we feed artificialfeeds, we then cross breed them. All of this leads to increased risk of foalingcomplications, and it is now our responsibility,to monitor and ensure the well being of ourmares and foals. Being a responsible horse breeder means youneed to be present when your mare foals, soyou are able to get or give assistance whenthings go wrong. Situations like, the sack did not break and thefoal suffocated.

The foal’s shoulders were stuck and the foalwas lost and nearly lost the mare as well. The foal was mal presented and both the mareand foal were lost. These are just a few of the complications thatoccur and in many cases the losses can be pre-vented. There are products on the market such as foal-ing alarms and foaling predictor kits, whichcan help alert you to when your mare will foal.Don't leave it to fate, protect your mare andfoal, when they need you most. If no complications arise you get to enjoy yourfoal’s start in life, which to any horse breeder isa very special and exciting event. For more information on foaling products thatcan help you, please contact Foalguard,www.foalguard.com or phone 03-5342-2206.

The Horse Report

Knowledge is key to Hendra solutionBy DAVID LOVELL BVScRedlands Veterinary Clinic

Nine properties and growing! What a devastating year for thehorse industry. Hendra was isolated in 1994 andnever have we had such a clusterof infected cases. Something has happened. Thequestion everyone wants to knowis what?Every day there is some `new’theory about why we have expe-rienced the reality of 2011. I am sure there are a multitude offactors but it is absolutely essen-tial that no stone be left unturnedin the quest for answers as hope-fully this opportunity will neverbe repeated. The horse industry must demandanswers and to achieve these, resources must be committedtowards achieving this end. I hear constant criticism of thegovernment departments for fail-ing to do this and that. These criticisms are extremelyunfair as the staff of the variousdepartments are all dedicated, committed and very hard work-ing individuals who are simplydoing their job. We all have to remember that it is

the elected government that dic-tates what the departmental staffdo and the only way to achieveresults is for the people who electpoliticians to demand of theirrepresentatives that policies aredirected at and funds committedtowards ensuring that we findout what is different. Objective scientific facts are theonly way that anything can beachieved. We gather this data, analyse it,and then proper and correctadvice and management prac-tices can be evolvedSo what has changed?Simplistically one would have tothink that the answer must liewithin the following factors: the virus, the bats, the environ-ment, or horse management.I was privileged to listen to a pre-sentation by Dr Linfa Wang, theworld's leading expert onHendra virus and his informa-tion was amazing. We do know a tremendous lotabout this virus. The relevant points to me werefirstly that the virus is highly vir-ulent, ie deadly once a suscepti-ble animal has been infected butvery poorly transmissible. This confirms that the virus is

extremely difficult to catch. It does not easily spread from aninfected individual to a suscepti-ble one. Secondly, the virus is ancient. Ithas been in existence in bats forthousands of years and it'sgenetic make-up hasn’t changed. Strike out viral change as beingresponsible. It is difficult to believe that horsemanagement has changed, although it would appear thatthe majority, if not all, of the cur-rent infected horses have beenfree roamers out in the paddock, with little direct human supervi-sion. A vital theory put forward byDale Andersen of Beaudesert, isthe fact that horses need a cer-tain amount of fibre in their dieteach day. Horses out in paddocks thathave a shortage of grass, aremuch more likely to scavengeand look for sources of feed.Perhaps this is a factor that pre-disposes them to search in areasthat bats may have been feeding. This is not a `change’ and so weshould rule this outWe are left with two elements. The bats and the environment.Certainly the environment haschanged dramatically. The last two seasons in particu-lar have given us the best annualrainfalls for at least a decade.Surely this is a significant differ-ence. It is absolutely essential that allaspects of the possible effectstheses excellent seasons mayhave contributed are studied. One possible theory could bethat bat numbers have increased.

We need to know. Certainly in nature, almost allnatural populations expandexponentially in times of plenty.Do bats follow the same pattern? The time of the year could becritical in relation to this. July is certainly the middle ofwinter. Does this mean that availablefood sources for the bats, partic-ularly if their numbers haveincreased, are at their lowestbecause of reduced floweringand fruits in the middle of win-ter? We need to know! Certainly it appears that sciencehas determined that the batsseem to shed more virus whenunder stress. Tests so far this year haverevealed a dramatic increase inthe amount of virus being shed. What is causing the stress in batsthat has resulted in thisincrease? We need to know.We need, and must demand, answers. Rest assured that the presentdepartmental staff members areworking as hard as they cantowards this end. The horse industry has to be sat-isfied that this is enough, giventhe uniqueness of the situation. Our elected representatives mustbe challenged immediately tosatisfy the industry that enoughfunds and resources are beingapplied now so that the oppor-tunity is not lost. Horse owners should make theirideas and concerns known, either by contacting their repre-sentatives, or instructing the var-ious societies to which a majori-ty are affiliated, to make repre-sentations on their behalf. I personally would like to seefunds allocated towards out-sourcing an epidemiologicalinvestigation, either through aprivate company or an academicresearch institution.Governments are keen to callinquiries into almost everythingelse, why not Hendra? There can never be too muchinformation as it is validatedinformation that allows us todevelop management practicesto help manage this disease. If nothing else, there are dailycalls for culling of bats, andequally emotive responses toleave them alone. The answer lies in knowledge. If we know the ecology anddynamics of bat populations, rational scientific recommenda-tions can be applied.

Understanding why flying foxesare shedding Hendra virus inincreasing amounts is a key tocombating the virus

orse From the paddock to the show ring

By LIZZIE WELLS

When you're sitting in thegrand stands watching thefinal workout of a champi-onship at a major show, don'tunderestimate the time andeffort that goes in to preparingthe horses involved. It all starts in the paddock. It is possible to turn the hairi-est, muddiest and tangledhorse in to a superstar, as longas the basics have been cov-ered such as; hoof care, dentalchecks and overall health havebeen attended to. The process of taking yourhorse from the paddock to theshow ring can be done withinfive simple steps. Step One: Assess the situation Have a good look at yourhorse, consider whether thehorse needs; the hair alongthe coronet band trimmed, it'sears clipped, mane or tailpulled and/or shaven, taildyed and trimmed, whiskersand long eyelashes need to beshaved and most importantlycheck the horses shoes. Once

you know exactly what thehorse needs to be done inpreparation for the ring thanyou can acquire an action planfor the make-over. Step Two: Action PlanSpecific time frames need to bemade before you start yourmake-over. For instance, manepulling should be done at leastone week prior to a show.Mane pulling for a horse canbe very uncomfortable, howev-er it is the only way to get per-fect plaits. A horse should never shouldnot have its mane pulled andbe plaited on the same day asthis will hurt the horse’s skin. This is also the same with tailpulling. If you think that you horse’sshoes need to be checked by afarrier than arrange a time. When you get to a show andyour horse has lost a shoe andtherefore is lame, all of yourhard work is wasted.Trimming your horse is veryimportant as this gives you thefiner detail that can mean theworld of difference in the

show ring. The most important areas thatneed to be looked at each timebefore a show would be:- legs and hooves, - bridle path - ears When trimming the hooves, make sure that the hair alongthe coronet band is perfectlystraight. The bridle path should not betrimmed too long as yourhorse’s neck will look a lotlonger with more plaits. When it comes to trimmingyour horse’s ears, we all knowthat they don't like it. So, you have two options, clip-pers or hair removal cream. If you chose to use hairremoval cream, put a cottonball down the ear drum first toensure that no cream goesdown. Shaving is another thing thatneeds to be done. Your horse’s chin hair and thelong eyelashes on top of theeyes need to be shaved. There are two options that youcan choose when it comes to

your horse’s tail. Either shave the sides of thetail or braid it. If your horsehas a long thick tail and has along hair at the top, braidingwould be a good idea. However, if your horse has athin tail or you don't knowhow to braid or just don't wantto, shaving would be youroption. Once you feel confident thatyour horse is all the right col-ors and has hair in all the rightplaces you can then move ontoyour next step, the day beforethe show!

Step Three: The day beforethe show-The day before the show isusually a very busy day espe-cially if you are still at schoolor working. Planning your dayalways helps. The following preparationneeds to be done to ensurethat your show day runssmooth and is less stressful. It is a good idea to make surethat your horse is worked thisday at some point, preferablybefore bathing. Once worked, touch up on anypast trimming. Once touch uptrimming has been done, bathyour horse. Shampoo yourhorse’s coat and its mane andtail and do not put conditionerin the mane as this will makeit hard for plating. This is also a good time towash any false tails if need be.A little trick to make yourhorse’s coat look immaculate ismix some QV oil with warmwater and pour over yourhorse (but don't forget thequality of a horse’s coat comesfrom the inside not outside). When the horse has beenbathed, allow the mane to dryand then your horse is readyto be plated. Once your horse has beenplaited, it is good to put amane stay or tight fitting hoodover the plaits as this will helpto flatten them over night. When your horse’s legs arecompletely dry another littletrick that can be used to giveyour horse the whitest socks isto mix baby powder and water

into a paste and then rub onwhite socks and allow to dryover night whilst bandaged. The day of the show just brushoff the baby powder. As soon as the horse has hadits beauty pamper, you need toget yourself ready. Think about clothing, hairaccessories, helmets, whips, horses make-up, human make-up, saddles, bridles, numbnas, browbands and/or anythingelse you might need. The day before the show youalso need to clean your showgear, make sure that your sad-dle is polished and stirrupscleaned. Your bridle bit shouldbe spotless and browbandsparkling. Ensure that everything ispacked away in the float andpray that your horse doesn'tsleep on a poo pillow.Step Four: Day of the showWhen it comes to presentingyour horse for a show youhave to take everything intoconsideration. The ultimate goal when itcomes to showing a horse isgaining the attention of thejudge. As soon as you get your horse

off the float at the show, takethe boots off and start blackingthe hooves. If your horse has any whitesocks, brush off the baby pow-der and get a permanentmarker and go around the topof the sock to even out patch-es. White chalk can then beapplied to missed areas on thesocks. Once the hooves and sockshave been done, you need tograb a half sponge with someranvensoil and highlight thefront of the horse’s legs and onthe hind legs up the back ofthe leg. Once the legs have been com-pleted fully, you can thenmove onto your horse’s tail. If it needs to be braided or afalse tail needs to be put in.Then most importantly sprayand final brush.

You then need to move ontoyour checkers and sharksteeth. Grab a bucket, waterspray, a small round brush anda cut nit comb. With your nit comb draw aline in the middle of thehorse’s back so that it lines upwith the top of the tail. Draw another line underneaththe middle line so you knowhow long the checkers shouldbe. Then start drawing yourcheckers on your horse liningthem up with a base line eachtime. Your sharks teeth should startright from the flank on thehorse and all it is , is drawingcrosses on the side of yourhorse. When you have finished thecheckers and sharks teeth youmove onto the make-up.

From page 15Start by getting some chalk andputting baby oil on the endthen outline your horse’s eyes(as shown in the picture above)and simply color in with thechalk. When applying chalk to thehorse's mouth area go a littlebit higher around the veryfront. Whatever you do justmake sure that it blends inwith your horse’s natural look. You then need to get someclear cover and rub over thechalk for the shiny look. If your horse has a blaze or astar, you can get white cover

paste and a toothbrush andadd on to your horse’s whitemarkings to make perfect. Even if your horse doesn't haveany white markings on the faceand you would like to test itout, start at the swirl on theirface and follow the hairaround. Step Five: Hopefully berewarded for your efforts!A lot of time is devoted toworking on your horses perfor-mance in the ring. This can be taken away soquickly by having poor presen-tation. So remember the five steps asthey will guide you from showto show and hopefully fromwin to win!

To get the best results the maneshould be thoroughly washedand conditioned and the manepulled to about 8cm long andstill damp. ( Keep mane damp withspray bottle)

Step 1. Divide into sections 3.5cm apart, hold back the rest ofthe mane with a comb or clipand plait right down to the endand secure with a rubber band.

Step2. Using a darning needleand cotton the same colour asthe mane sew into the end ofthe mane then fold the plait inhalf then in half again and sewthrough plait to secure

Step 3. When all plaits are fin-ished and securely sewn give afinal spray with hair spray andput on a clean satin lined hoodor skinny hood to protect plaitsand keep them neat and cleanready for the show.

Victorian Anne Hepworth has been makingbrowbands for the last 16 years. She firststarted making browbands for her daugh-ters.It was from there she started supplying thelocal saddlery for the people of Milduraand surrounding areas. She travelled toshows with her daughters and establishedan ever growing client base. Anne believes she was one of the first tointroduce removable tags for the browbands. The design of the tags and rosettes along with velcro, assisted in the easy removal from the browband after each show. This then enables the rosettes to be stored in a clean safe place andundamaged until the next use. Anne endeavours to keep her prices competitive with the basicdesigns starting at $50. She can design your own special colours and style with you andcome up with a unique browband, or you can visit her websitewww.supremebrowbands.com.au and view some of the manydesigns available.

Looking sharp in the ring has neverbeen easier! There are so many options and coloursavailable to suit every horse andrider/handler combination. So where do you start? The first step is to determine if yourhorse is a hunter or open hack. When showing a hunter in hand, youshould tend to dress in more neutraltones browns, olives and cream coloursthough navy is also acceptable.I tend not to recommend or wear bright colours including red whenshowing hunters. I would wear plain flat shoes, a plain cane and tofinish your look wear a nice hat. When showing open horses in hand, the sky is the limit. Skirts and pants are equally acceptable with a plain camisole andmatching jacket. Add some colour to your outfit that matches your ribbon browband. Again flat shoes, bling cane or whip and matching hat.Open show jackets are traditionally plain navy or black three or fourbuttons with a double vent. To create your own style, you can add a accent of colour and in theform of piping, outer colour trim or even a full collar colour. There are so many options available again keep in mind your bodyshape when deciding between a standard cut, square cutaway orrounded cutaway jacket. Matching back your ribbon browband, lapel pin, vest or stock can tiein the whole look. Always remember to do your hair, clean your boots and other gearbefore stepping into the ring. If your having trouble deciding what to buy I would recommend aplain navy then you can change your vest and stock for differentlooks. Hunter hacks should be less colorful jacket colours normally arebrown, olive green and navy tweed fabric, trim on the colour can beworn, plain browbands and hunting style canes should be used.Your stock should be plainer color and gloves should always beworn. When deciding make sure you consider your horse’s colour and youbody shape before making a final decision not always to follow thetrends and stay true to what works best for you.For further information and ideas contact 0448 850 042 or visitwww.nvsequineattire.com.au

With the warm weather ofspring finally coming upon us,those who are lucky enough tohave avocados could also have ahazard to horses on their hands. The leaves, fruit, seeds and barkare poisonous to horses. All of these contain Persinwhich is a cardiac toxin (heartdamaging).Signs and symptoms of avocadopoisoning in horses includesswelling around the head andeyes which can extend aroundthe cheeks and glands. This can cause the horse diffi-cult with swallowing. Swelling in other areas can alsooccur such as around theabdomen and sheath. In lactating mares, Persin pro-duces a non-infectious mastitiswhich is the inflammation of themammary glands, epithelialnecrosis which is the skin celldeath over the mammary glandsand agalactia which is thedecrease in milk production. Occasionally inflammation ofthe gut and colic may also

occur. Part of theheart muscledies which iscalledmyocardialnecrosis. The horse

could have difficulty breathingcalled dyspneaz, coughing andincreased respiratory and heartrate. It is this damage to your horsesheart which causes fluid tobuild and the swellings to occur. As the condition deteriorates abluish colour will tinge yourhorses lips, this is calledcyanosis. Finally the horse will stop eat-ing, become very weak and willnot be able to get up. The heart damage may be fataland the cardiac changes arelargely irreversible; therefore, access to avocado groves shouldbe prevented for horses. If you suspect your horse of eat-ing avocado trees, contact yourvet immediately.

The Horse Report

By JOHN DOWNES

This discussion is one in a series onthe training of the lateral exercises. If you have just commenced read-ing this article, I would suggestaccessing previous articles whichare readily accessible on the HorseReport website atwww.horsereport.com.

These same articles will be avail-able on my websitewww.freewebs.com/downeseques-trianservices within the next fourweeks. In the last issue I discussed theintroduction of the lateral exercises. The first of these exercises was turnon the forehand. Although theturn on the forehand is not a com-petition movement it serves a cru-cial role for introducing horse andrider to the concept of using theinside leg into the outside rein. This exercise is an important pre-cursor exercise to all other move-ments executed in dressage as itteaches the horse to move awayfrom the inside (driving) leg intothe outside rein. Not only are all lateral exercisespredicated on this concept butmore importantly it allows therider to rebalance the horse byengaging the horse's inside hindleg. This rebalancing is also called thehalf halt or parade. I will leave the

discussion of half halt/parade for afuture article but keep in mindthese exercises or tools are beingintroduced to improve the paces ofthe horse and subsequent commu-nication between horse and rider.Once the turn on the forehand canbe executed easily on both reins inan open arena horse and rider willbe ready to move on to the next lat-eral exercise which is leg yielding. Leg yielding is a competitionmovement which can be executedin trot on the diagonal. To make it easier for both horseand rider to acquire these newskills, my suggestion is to practicethis movement in walk until youfeel proficient before trying in trot. Leg yielding is commonly per-formed in one of three ways:1.down the long side of the arena(nose to wall/haunches in)2.across the diagonal, or, 3.on a circleIn this article we will concentrateon leg yielding in nose to walldown the long side of the arena.Nose to wall is the easiest lateralexercise to train as the wall willhelp to control the paces and makeup for lack of outside rein. We will commence nose to wallaway from the inside left leg to theoutside right rein, in walk, bygoing large around the arena onthe right rein or clockwise. Proceed through the corner before

the long side of the arena ensuringthe horse is bent around the rider'sright leg . As you reach the long side straight-en the horse. Place your newinside or left leg on the girth, andblock with your outside right reinwhilst maintaining a slight flexionto the left. This will cause the horse to swingits hindquarters towards the centreof the arena . Proceed down the long side forseveral steps. If you find this exer-cise initially confusing and difficultto execute, straighten the horse, take a few deep breaths and recom-mence the exercise. When you are able to execute thisexercise easily, increase the num-ber of steps until you are able to dothe whole long side of the arena. At the end of the long side straight-en the horse and ride the corner incorrect bend and flexion. On the short side of the arena allowthe horse to relax by surrenderingyour reins while maintaining activ-ity in the walk.

I would normally repeat this exer-cise a number of times on bothreins. Once I feel the horse understandsthe exercise and is executing it withease I then move on to the next legyielding exercise which is acrossthe diagonal of the arena. This movement initially is best exe-cuted from the quarter or centreline to the long side of the arena. Turn the horse down the centre lineof the arena and proceed straightfor a few metres. Once you havethe horse straight and waiting foryou flex the horse slightly awayfrom the direction of travel. Drive the horse towards the longside of the arena being careful toensure the horse is as straight aspossible and its hindquarters arenot trailing while utilising theinside leg to outside rein aid con-cept at all times. Points to be aware of* In leg yielding the horse is alwaysflexed and bent away from thedirection of travel* Keep the horse as straight as pos-sible while maintaining flexion andbend* Overuse of the inside rein is thebiggest cause of failure to executethe leg yield correctly. This actionwill result in your horse being over

flexed and going through the out-side shoulder in the direction oftravel * Alternatively if you feel the horseis not moving away from your leguse more leg and not more insiderein. If your horse ignores your leguse a more forceful aid such asyour spur or whip* Try to excite the inside hind leg.We want the horse to cross andshow some expression as this willhelp create engagement* Once the exercise can be donewith ease in walk try it in trot* If trying for nose to wall in trot, try for less angle as too much anglecauses loss of the outside shoulderand you will lose the engagementyou are trying to create* There is currently some consider-able confusion in the naming of theleg yielding exercises. When ahorse is bent and flexed to the leftand travelling to the right, this iscalled leg yield left due to the waythe horse is flexed. HoweverEquestrian Australia recentlyadopted the United States DressageFederation tests and have namedthe lateral exercises after the direc-tion of travel not flexion unlike theAustralian and EuropeanFederations. Leg yielding is not only a greatexercise to improve the horse's sup-pleness and engagement but it isalso a way to improve the rider'ssense of timing, coordination andriding skills. By synchronising thetiming of the driving aid of therider's leg when the inside hind legof the horse is in the air, this willassist in adding expression to themovement. One of the results ofthe leg yield is the horse shouldnow begin to carry himself on thebit due to the engagement of theinside hind leg. It is most impor-tant to remember the roundness ofthe horse comes from ensuringflexion/bend, controlling the paceswithin the movement and not fromthe overuse of reins or harsh bis. If you require any clarification onthe above comments, don't hesitatein contacting me on (07) 5498 3807,0429 486 734 or alternatively viaemail on [email protected]. I will discuss additional lateralexercises in the next issue of theHorse Report.

One of the fastest growing eques-trian sports in the world will beon show in Alstonville inOctober - Team Penning. It is a sport for all ages and holdsappeal for anyone who enjoysprecision along with an adrena-line kick at the same time. “It’s about the only horse sportthat mum, dad, and the childrencan all ride in the same event,”Northern Rivers Team PennersAssociation president KatrinaO'Leary said. This fast paced event gives ateam of three riders 60-90 sec-onds (depending on the class) toseparate three head of specifical-ly identified cattle from a herd ofaround 30 head of cattle. Once they have been separatedfrom the herd, the team's job is toget the separated cattle to the

opposite end of the arena and into the 'pen' hence the name. The challenges of Team Penningis simply-beating the time, work-ing as a team and having fun.
