2. In what ways does your mediaproduct use, develop or challengeforms and conventions of realmedia products? 3. I used, developed and challenged many conventions whilst in theprocess of planning and editing of my trailer. The first thing I did wasfind out what psychological thriller tend to have. I did this byanalysing Seven, The Butterfly Effect and The Game, I found that theytend to be quite dark and twisted films and doesnt usually havemuch blood in it.I decided to use a female victim, dark situations and a male adult asthe protagonist. The reason I decided to do a female victim is that I feel that it makesis more realistic as females are seen as more vulnerable then males. Iused a young female again as younger people are seen as more weekthan older people are.I used an adult male as the audience will know that this going to bethe antagonist. This is to make the film dark an twisted which lead tomy third convention.I m going to be doing a kidnapping storyline as I feel like this is a darktwisted plot. As you do not know what is going to happen to theprotagonist. Using dark scenes also helped creating the setting of adark and gloomy film. The reason for this is most people who arekidnapped are taken to dark places and could be killed or abused. 4. I was lucky enough to have a friend who has a dark garage which was theperfect setting for were the victim is going to be kept and it meant I didnthave to worry to much on lighting.Having a female victim is very different from the films that I analysed asThe Game has a male victim, having a male as the victim that not onlyfemales are vulnerable. The reason I decided to have a female victim as Ifelt that it was going to be easier to portray. 5. Trailers that I analysed 6. How effective is the combinationof your main product and ancillarytext? 7. What references to the film have you included?Poster- What features have you continued across all 3 itemsI have used the same characters on both my poster and magazine coverthe character clearly indicates that she is the protagonist. Also when theaudience see the magazine/poster they will immediately know whatfilm it is. I have also kept the same lighting in all 3 trailer, poster and magazinethis is so that the audience get the idea that it is going to be a dark film. The fonts on both the magazine cover and poster is the same this is sothat this font can be identified to the audience of The Hostage. Also theMagazinestyle and colour of the font is the same and the fact that it is red andwhite these colours represent horror/thriller films as they indicateblood/death. 8. What messages about your film have you made?I wanted to show that the film is going to be a dark and twisted film. The way I have done this isby having a black background on the poster and having the protagonist facing down as if thoughshe is in trouble. I didnt want to give to much away on the poster, so just having her tied on achair suggest trouble but the audience does not know what has happened. The trailer leaves questions so the only way of finding out what happens is by going to watchthe film. The question I have left is what happens to the girl? and what will he do? I didnt wantto show what happens as I feel that the audience wouldnt want to go and see the film. However I do feel that with the trailer I could have added a few close ups at the ends of thewoman to make it a little more dramatic. With the magazine that I produced for my film I gave the message of a dark film as the magazinecover is black with red writhing on the banner. 9. How are you enticing an audience to watch yourtrailer/film?The way that my poster and magazine cover are enticing the audience togo watch the trailer, is by showing that them it is going to be a darktwisted film. The title The Hostage and the tagline You Never knowwhats next.Having the image as a young female victim tied to a chair also l makes theaudience wonder is she will be murdered and how she got there. Theway that the image of the girl tied to the chair is positioned in the centreof the poster, she is also is faces away from the audience which indicateshat something is wrong and makes the audience go and watch the trailerto see what it is going to be about. The fact the trailer ends with Be Quite and You Wont Get Hurt. enticesthe audience in as it makes them wonder what is going to happen to thegirl. 10. Have you missed anything (attention to detail)?- Have you used the same fonts/positioning/colours/style/tagline?In both the poster and the magazine I have used the same colour pallet , I also usedthe same image I did this because I feel it is a good way to brand my film. I have alsopositioned both images in the centre of the screen as it attracts the audience in,however the images is at an angle so this makes it look more professional. What could you have done better?I think that my trailer could have been better, I personally feel that I needed a little bitmore thriller in the trailer however due to the time I had I wasnt able to get morefootage. The lighting in the trailer also could have been done better.I feel that the research could have been slightly more detailed however due to thesaving problems I have had it has been hard for me to get all the work up to a veryhigh standard. 11. What have you learned from youraudience feedback? 12. What audience feedback did you undertake?I undertook a poll feedback I also did a focus group the reason that I did theses was to getunderstanding of what I needed to do to improve certain pieces of work (poster magazine andtrailer). With the poll I asked What do you think of the Storyboard? Do you think my blog suits thepsychological thriller genre? and What magazine titles is most effect?.The reason I undertook a poll feedback is because a variety of people can access the internet, also with a poll on my blog they can look at the work before they answer whereas if I did aquestionnaire about my magazine or poster than I would have to print them off as well thequestionnaires. 13. How do you ensure you asked a range of people? The way I have asked a range of people is by asking a rangeof different type of people to go on my blog and answer thequestions I have asked. I have also asked a different range ofpeople to tell me what they think of my trailer and askedhow they think it could be improved. What did you learn?I learned that my trailer needed more dramatic movementsand quicker shots, with the memory part I learned that itneeded to be more clear that it is a memory. With the poll I learned that Just Released was the best namefor my magazine, my blog does link to the psychologicalthriller genre, and that the storyboard gives enoughinformation. 14. How did you respond to these findings? These findings helped me get an idea on what the audience wanted in the trailer andwhat was good on my blog, however it with the trailer it helped me get an idea onwhat needed to be added in in. With this I added more dramatic music and with thememory helped me get an idea on what I could Do to make it look more of a memory. The way I made I look more like a memory was white transitions with sound effect tohelp get the idea of a memory.Does your target audience find your work effective/entertaining/scary/thrilling?My audience thought that my trailer thrilling and effective. They have said that theediting was very effective with it in general being thrilling. 15. How did you use mediatechnologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages? 16. I used a variety of different types of technology throughout the researchplanning and evaluation.I used the internet, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Word for theresearch. YouTube was what I used to analyse psychological thrillersanalysing Seven, The butterfly Effect and The Game all these told me that Ineeded low key lighting , fast cuts and music. The planning I used camcorder, camera, tripod, Mac, pixlr, all these helpedme create my trailer, poster, and magazine. 17. Did the technologies hold you back in anyway? If so, how?I had a lot of problems with technology which set me back the biggest problem I hadis that my work wasnt saving which meant I was repeatedly doing the same work, ittook me 3X longer to do the work which set me a long way back. I also had problemswith my blog I had trouble uploading some of my work (Trailer, Magazine analysis) thisset me back as I had to find away of loading my work onto the blog and find out why itwas not uploading.Did you use technology to engage with the audience (polls/blogs.)?I have created a blog to engage with may audience, as it provided all my work andinformation about my trailer. On the blogs I used polls this was to get the audiencefeedback on certain parts of my work (poster, magazine and storyboard), with theposter and magazine I asked for improvements so what they think I can do to improvethem. I also used slideshare for my trailer analysis. 18. How did technology impact your work at each stage?- Did it improve your work?Using a variety of different technologies helped getting my the audienceinteracted in a variety of different ways (blog, YouTube, slide share).Creating each piece of my work was created on different programmes for theresearch i used Word and PowerPoint. For the poster I used fireworks andhttp://pixlr.com/editor/ these are editing tools which were good to edit myimage and then add all the text. The magazine I used publisher as i felt this was the beat programme to use tocreate a magazine . This improved my work as it had all the different featuresthat a magazine needs and helped it look as professional as it could be withthe only resources I had. With the trailer I used the Mac and used iMovie the reason for this was that itwas the best technology i had to produce a trailer. I used iMovie instead ofmoviemaker as I feel as though moviemaker is not going to give the samequality. 19. Why did you choose to use each type of technology?- What were the benefitsI decided to do a blog as it was a good way to show my work interactively and it shows I can usedifferent types of technologies. It also allows me to add polls and get feedback on my work. I used iMovie to create my trailer as it was the best editing software I had available. Thebenefits of iMovie is that I could add and remove sound, cut the clips shorter, change lighting, and add effects.Did you consider any other types and what made you choose the one you went for?I had considered using moviemaker to make my trailer so that I could do work on it at home if Ineeded but iMovie has better editing tools for me to use, this is why i chose it and instead ofworking at home I decided to work in my free lessons. 20.
