"For example: If sunrise is at 6:00, then the third hour of theday would be from eight to nine.

The counting of the DARK part of the day is also determinedby the SUN; that is, sunSET which al80 varle. day to day ."-The Lord's Supper "Daity" part 3 by Lois I. Roden

Question:Since we have been instructed by the Present Truth message

to reckon the time of the "Daily from sunrise, do we count bysixty minute hours, or is there another method of reckoning?

Definition: "Hour. In ancient times, the 12th part of thePERIOD OF DAYLIGHT (In 11:9; ct. Mt 20:1-12); thus the LENGTHOF THE HOUR VARIED somewhat according to the seasons ....thetime of Isaiah the Hebrews evidently had some method oftelling time by the sun's shadow, for the miraculous signgranted to Hezekiah was the backward movement of the shadowon the "dail" of Ahaz (2Ki 20:11). Timepieces existed in Egypt inthe form of water clocks, ...Scales differing according to theMONTHS of the year made allowance for the DIFFERENT LENGTHOF HOURS." SDA Bible Dictionary

Answer:"'The TWO Divine Guides of Life, The Word and NATURE, as

we have already seen, are the best and the only TEACHERS,that speak with AUTHORITY 00 .. ' Entering Wedge #1 p.38."-Calendar in the Heavens by Lois I. Roden

"The Almighty has said in Genesis 1:1418 {please read} ....Their method ~f reckoning time is good (perfect). So whychange it?" ibid. p.2,3

"The crucifiction of the Messiah fullfiled the TYPICALmorning and evening sacrifice and TRANSFER ED the "Dailyministration" to the heavenly Sanctuary ... The Lord's Supper"Daily" part 3 p.3"Let us examine this passage thoroughly. It is the LIGHTS

which are to rule over the day and over the night, to divide darkfrom light. The SUN is to 'rule' or to 'delineate' the DAY." ibid.p. 3 "'And what was done in type in the ministration of the

earthly sanctuary is done in reality in the ministration of theheavenly sanctuary.' The Great Controversy, p.420'" The "Daily"part 1 by Ben L. Roden.

    '''Daily'- THE 'TIME'"

"1. THE DAY- the SUN determines the LIGHT part of the DAY,beginning at SUNRISE-ruled by the sun; therefore, in whatevertime zone one finds himself, a SUNRISE SCHEDULE is availableto count when the THIRD and NINTH hours should begin, andwhich varies a few minutes each day, ...Then all may know the"TIME" of the DAIL Y. The third hour is counted from sunrise;therefore it would begin when the second hour ends.

"Jesus answered, Are there not TWELVE HOURS IN THEDAY?"Jn11:9

The accompaning graph shows the approximate variance ofthe length of the light part of the day. Before the flood, duringwhich the earth was tipped off her axis, the light part and darkpart were of equal length 0

  • The modern method of determining the length of the seconds, minutes, and hours by calculation of the heavenly bodies andtheir movements, though extremely accurate (not perfect),tells us how God ordained the "times" and "seasons" of theuniverse, but also testifies that this earth is, out of that order.

We have a choice (so to speak) of being in harmony withuniversal time (fixed hours), or local apparent time (varyinghours). The "Times" of the "Daily" in the typical ministrationwere determined by local apparent time. Is there any reason tobelieve that it is, at this time, any different in the Heavenlyministration?

We have the more sure Word of Prophecy" to give us hopethat God will set this earth back on her axis soon, thusrestoring "all things, even the "times as they were before theflood-was the garden of Eden".

There is available nowadays sunset and sunrise charts forover 300 U.S. cities. The one we used for the graph waspublished in 1977 by the Gale Institute and is supposed to beaccurate within 1 or at the most 2 minutes each day of the yearthrough the rest of the twentieth century.

Please note that the length of the light part of the day variesfrom about 9 hrs. 17 mins. in late Dec. to about 15 hrs. 5mins.in the last week in June.

If we add 60 min. hours to the time of the sunrise in Junethen the 12th hour would not be the end of the daylight, but the15th! Thus contridicting In. 11:9.

If we do the same in Dec. we have only 9-10 hours ofdaylight, thus the 12th hour of the day would be more than 2hours after sunset.

SincerelyYours,in the restoration of all things,
