Reward Systems to Foster Student Motivation: The Do’s and Don’tsMany teachers use reward systems in their classroom to increase student motivation as well as aid in controlling student behavior. While there is a plethora of research touting the positive effects of reward systems on fostering motivation, there is an equal amount of research discussing the pitfalls of reward systems. Reward systems should be used to foster intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation, as well as foster a community of learning rather than only recognize the achievements of “star” students. Additionally, reward systems should never be used to punch students for inappropriate behavior. These are important tips for pre and in-service teachers to know to help them build successful rapports with their students while also using a tool appropriately.
