STATE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Hello MSCAR!

Hope everyone is having an exciting summer just like I had. I have been busy, busy,

busy travelling all over the state speaking about Healing Our Veterans. After our

May Board Meeting I spoke to Sarah Ann Cochrane Chapter, DAR in Plymouth who made a

material and monetary donation to the Michigan Veterans Foundation later in the summer.

For Memorial Day, on Sunday I visited the annual Wayne/Westland parade in Wayne, MI and

saw the tribute of another Blue Star Memorial. On Memorial Day I visited Elias Cady Society

and walked in the Memorial Day parade along with all the members.

In June, the Michigan Veterans Foundation had an annual bike ride around Detroit to bring

awareness of all the homeless veterans on the streets. Next I headed down to Ohio for the

Great Lakes Regional along with Tiffany, Mitch, and Moria.

In July I was able to explore a bit of Michigan as I was finding my way to Lewiston, MI to speak

to the Chief Shawano Chapter, DAR. After visiting Chief Shawano, I was informed that some of

the veterans there (who were being honored during the meeting for serving) were also once

homeless and found help at Patriot Place, located in Gaylord. They do much of the same ser-

vices that the MVF provides. As a note to the societies, don’t feel limited to only donate time

and material if there is a place near you that also serves homeless veterans. I was able to also

display information about the project at the community yard sale that Fort Dearborn Society

and Colonel Joshua Howard Chapter, DAR participated in. I also worked with members of my

local society to sell baked goods at the three day event.

The August meeting was also a success. With the hotel chosen, the board was able to choose

the menus and Saturday afternoon activity for the State Conference. I am also excited to pro-

mote the new MSCAR website worked hard by Emma Huber and senior Teresa Jones. After

the meeting, members learned about the National President’s project, O! Say Can You See.

Members learned how to fold an American flag, and then three groups relayed to show off

their new skill the fastest. Following the relay race members learned about the American flag

and anthem through Jeopardy. Everyone ended the day splashing around in the pool.

With school starting again, there are many more events lined up for myself, including more

DAR Chapter meetings, the MSDAR State Conference, and I am choreographing a dance piece

to go along with Healing Our Veterans, which will premiere in December before our next

meeting. See everyone in Frankenmuth!

Sincerely,

Courtney Ozog

What an exciting summer it has been thus far with June and July slipping past as quickly as ever the

C.A.R. members have been hot on the trail of both the Regional Tour and a few joining in with Continental Congress this

past month in D.C.. Let’s start with the N.S.C.A.R. Regional Tour in June – Great Lakes Region was second in a series of nine

(9) regionals. Michigan saw a total of four seniors and four members attend the event were over 120 were in attendance

to support the National President in her endeavors to raise monies for The Star Spangled Banner house in Baltimore, MD.

Tiffany Ozog served in the color guard for the event and Mitch Huber was active in skits, Regional Chaplain and, of course,

our State President, Courtney Ozog, gave her report at the banquet. GL Regional Vice President – William Fridenmaker led

this year’s regional supported by Senior Mr.Jeffrey Voris. Despite a nice rain storm, the event was very well received.

The following week was the D.A.R. Continental Congress where member Emma Huber served as Page for her very first

time. Senior leadership also included Jessica Hodges, Dawn Moulthrop-Brady, and Elizabeth Findeis (John Paul Jones Socie-

ty) all to whom I am grateful in guiding her in this inaugural assignment! Those interested in knowing more be sure to

reach out to Emma and others like Courtney Ozog who has also served in furthering their work being D.A.R. members.

The month of July encompassed supporting the completion of the M.S.C.A.R. website! Yeah – and many thanks to the

hours spent by Emma Huber and her senior Teresa Jones in securing the updates for a fresh look at the site. As the web

team finishes uploading photos, etc., Teresa will be setting up the member’s only side where you should find the directory,

state conference registration information, etc. You should receive instructions by this newsletter. Our State President has

been on the road meeting with and presenting her project in support of Michigan Veterans Foundation. Courtney has been

involved with their activities and should be nearing the 50% mark of her goal.

Our M.S.C.A.R. State program packet meeting was graciously hosted by Sue Janke and her home. It was a beautiful day and

we had 12 members, 2 guests and 14 seniors in attendance. Thank you to all in support of our State President’s project!

I hope to see many of you at the D.A.R. State Conference in Troy September 19-21 at the Marriott and at one of the many

patriotic events coming to your local communities including the Vietnam memorial event in Milford (11/15), and Wreaths

across American (12/13).

Have a wonderful fall season -

Hi, I’m Katie Brim and I am chairman of the Government Studies Committee. This year the objective of my committee is to learn

more about the Presidents of our country.

Here’s a quiz to see how much you know about our country’s leaders. You’ll find the answers on page 7.

1. I was the only man to become President and then Chief Justice of the United States. _______________________________

2. I was the only grandson of a President. ____________________________________________________________________

3. I died from an assassin’s bullet only six months after I become President. ________________________________________

4. I was the youngest man elected President. _________________________________________________________________

5. I was forced to resign the Presidency because of a scandal. ____________________________________________________

6. I was elected President twice but my terms were not consecutive. ______________________________________________

Hello M.S.C.A.R. members, I hope you

are having a Star Spangled Summer cele-

brating the national project theme, O Say

Can You See! As the school season rap-

idly approaches (some sooner than oth-

ers) I hope you are all gearing up to help

promote the national and state projects

along with the anniversary of The Star

Spangled House in Baltimore, MD.

As your State Director and National Merit Chairman, I toured the country this sum-mer to help the National President and her board spread awareness of not only her project, but also, the new officer

standards which you can find in your pro-gram packet. Be sure to go to the web-site – www.nscar.org, set up your ac-count (if you do not already have one) and download the packets and the Na-tional Merit Award form! I challenge all of the societies in Michigan

to, at a minimum, submit the National

Merit Award form this year! Let’s see

100% participation. Remember one event

may meet multiple programs. I anxiously

look forward to an exciting year of patri-

otic activities including the Vietnam me-

morial on November 15th, the annual

Wreath Laying at Great Lake Cemetery

December 13th and our state meeting in

Frankenmuth on December 14th.

Hello, I’m Daniel Woodworth, your state organizing secretary for this year. I

am currently going into my second year at the University of Michigan studying

Computer Science.

As Organizing Secretary, it is my duty to help new societies through the process

of organizing themselves. Even if your society has been around for a while,

though, you can still take part in celebrating your society’s organization by pre-

paring a program on some of your society’s unique aspects or history. I look

forward to continuing my term as organizing secretary and seeing what kinds

of organization-themed programs societies put together.

“I Remember”

September 11, 2001

The one date that many Americans will never forget.

The tragic event that lives on, even after many years.

I was only seven years old when the chaos ensued. I remember starting a normal Tuesday in school. I remember my mom pulled me out of school, but I didn’t know why. When we got home, I remember my mom was freaking out, making me wonder what was wrong and if I should worry as well. She eventually told me somebody crashed into the Twins Towers in New York. Even though I did not know what the Twin Towers were because I was so young, I was shocked that somebody would crash on purpose. Our mom told me and my sister that she would rather have us together at home than apart if the same people chose to attack Detroit also.

Everything changed after that day.

On the 6th anniversary, I remember my English teacher showed us videos from that day and taught us what happened and why. We learned how systems, like airport security, has changed since 9/11, something I would not know because I was only a toddler when I went on an airplane for the first time.

Visiting Washington D.C. you can see where a third plane hit the Pentagon building.

The fourth plane never made it to its destination because of the brave passengers aboard. A living memorial is in progress of being built at the crash site in Pennsylvania, honoring each of the passengers who gave their lives to help stop the terrorists from reaching its intended destination, which will never be known.

The effects of 9/11 still have consequences for those brave firefighters and policemen who survived, some of them developing cancer from the fumes.

9/11 is like the bombing of Pearl Harbor that our great grandparents remember, both only being one event that prompted the United States into war. Americans will remember. I remember.

Healing Our Veterans 2014 M.S.C.A.R. 2015

The Michigan Veterans Foundation is an organization formed to fill the gaps in services provided for veterans, mainly homeless veterans. Located in Detroit, MI, the MVF provides food, clothing, shelter, housing, and therapy for those men and women who have served our country. My goal is to raise $2000 to donate for any of their needs and supplement of supplies. Societies can also help by collecting hygiene supplies, nonperishable food, or other items and donating these items to the Detroit Veterans Center. Members are also encouraged to visit the DVC and learn about the homeless of our veteran population. For more infor-mation visit www.michiganveteransfoundation.org.

STATE PRESIDENT’S PROJECT

KI-KA-MA-SUNG SOCIETY

Mark and Henry Schell C.A.R. visited the Tuscola County Court House for a program about the courthouse architecture and the stained glass window. The children heard about the Art Deco building design and the renovated art decorations in the lobby and stair ways. Our speaker Laurie Stark then told the story of the stained glass window. It shows General Lewis Cass signing a treaty with local Indians. The picture has General Cass with his soldiers along with Indians in full feathered head dress and ca-noes resting on the banks of the Cass River. The window features Water Lilies, woodland plants, trees and beautiful colored clouds in sunset. The members learned about the different kinds of glass used to make the window. Some of it was painted and baked, some was pressed colored glass and some was pulled colored glass. It was put together like a puzzle and then glued with a melted metal. The children held their regular society meeting with lunch and then colored Native American design pic-tures to imitate stained glass windows.

NEWS FROM THE MARK AND HENRY SCHELL SOCIETY

Ki-Ka-Ma-Sung Society partnered with our sponsoring Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Chapter for two events in July. We march to-

gether in the Schoolcraft 4th of July Parade. Later in the month, we attended an ice cream social at the farm of Vice Regent

Gloria Culp. We’ll have a joint meeting on September 13th, and we’re looking forward to welcoming our State President to

talk about her project this year.

Did you know there were so many hereditary or genealogical organizations? How far back do your ancestors go? Do you know

how to find out? D.A.R., S.A.R., S.R., and local society’s and chapter leadership are all good places to start.

Check these websites as well:

www.censusfinder.com/michigan-genealogy-society.htm www.ancestory.com

There are a number of sources such as local libraries, and web services (ancestory.com) that can guide you in your search. Check

out the N.S.C.A.R. program packet for ideas and hold a program on outreach to other genealogical groups.

As your Membership Chairman, I encourage each household to hold a subscription to THE PATRIOT – the N.S.C.A.R. magazine. For only $8.00 per year paid through your societies dues OR directly ordered on the N.S.C.A.R. website (www.nscar.org) you can be sure to receive the four (4) issues each year. Your society can also be featured in this magazine with photos and information on the patriot activities C.A.R. members do! Details on how can be found in the magazine as well as on the N.S.C.A.R. website – let your local society SHINE!

Elias Cady Society

The Department of Defense Vietnam War Commemoration has recognized the Elias Cady Society of Waterford Michigan as a Commemorative partner. The Society will assist and support a grateful nation in thanking and honoring our Vietnam War Veter-ans, their families, and those who served with, or in support of, the Armed Forces.

Elias Cady members Ryleigh Pyrc and Olivia Pyrc along with their sisters, Sierra, Parker and Macie, are pictured with the Vietnam War 50th anniversary flag.

State Curator

I’m Arthur Woodworth, and I’m your State Curator. I’m a junior this

year at Kalamazoo Central High School and the Kalamazoo Area Mathe-

matics and Science Center. I’m looking forward to getting involved with

the Model U.N. at school.

As Curator, I want to make sure that you and your society learn as much

about our N.S.C.A.R. Museum as you can. An easy way to do that is to

take a virtual tour online. You can draw and object from the museum

and share it with your society.
