    Homework #1

    1. Summarize the story in your own words. If you would like to quote the story, includingdialogue, please do so.

    2. Respond to the story. As you respond, focus on the following question: How did Yegor

and Pelageya's relationship become what it is? What evidence from the story supports your

    perspective?

    1) SummaryThe Hunter and His Compassionate Woman

The story called The Huntsman was written in March 1885 and tells about the

encounter between Yegor Vlasych, a hunterman and his wife, Pelageya. This meeting

happened in the middle of the forest while he was hunting and she was working for her

village. Both of them, clearly, were carrying a lot of hurt in relation to each other. If, by on

hand, Pelageya was looking at his husband in a contemplating way, missing his presence

and asking him to go back to the village that they used to live, Yegor, on the other hand,

with his strong personality, believed that marrying with her was a huge mistake. He said

that the reason why they got married was simply because he was in a drunken state and

was kept this way by the counter of this village, who in turn was envying his hunting skills.

Also, he claimed that she was not a woman for him because, besides being a cowgirl, she

was a woman that could not understand his hunting and free spirit and hence, his way of

life. The only way he could possible go back to village would be if he gets drunk, and yet,

he wouldnt treat her well. Although his repulsion for her was clear in the way he was

responding her and that she was aware that he was with another woman, Pelageya,

continued to ask him to come back, even with no luck, and kept looking at him wishing him

again until he left her there and disappeared in the wood.

    2) Personal ResponseHow Can the Differences Affect a Relationship?

The story The Huntsman, which tells about the encounter of a hunter, Yegor Vlasych

and his wife, Pelageya, shows their different perspectives about the marriage between both.

Therefore, reading this text, it is possible to reach the probable cause of why they are no

longer in a relationship. That said, I believe that the main reasons why they are not

together anymore are because first, they have different opinions about their marriage and

second, because they both have striking differences among their personalities.

In relation to the first reason, during the story, it was clear that both Yegor and

Pelageya, had different views about why they should or should not continue to be together.

Yegor stated that he had a free spirit of a hunter and was a wild man. But, on contrast, he

had a thought that she was a woman with no understanding and hence, that there couldnt

be any love between them. He stated that the only reason why he married with her was

because he was in a drunken state. However, Pelageya thought in a different way. She

believed that hunting shouldnt be a way of life, a real occupation. Also, shebelieved that,

since they were wedded in church, they should be together, even if Yegor was drunk when

they got married. Therefore, through these different thoughts, is possible to realize that they

couldnt be together, although Pelageya really wanted.

In relation to the second point, by reading the text, and analyzing their personalities, I

think that the reader can easily recognize giant contrasts between them. Yegor was a man

with strong personality. For instance, he said Once a free spirit settles in a man, theres no

getting it out of him, which shows that he had his trusts and strongly believed that the way

he was living was the best for him. He clearly didnt mind on treat her bad and say

whatever he thought as long as he could show why his destiny was meant to be a wild

hunter man. Pelageya, on the other hand, appears to be a compassioned woman who was

willing to be with him, even not agreeing with his way of life, knowing that he didnt love

her and was with another woman. It seems to me that her resignation was one of the key

reasons why Yegor, a free man, couldnt stand being married with her.

To sum up, it is clear that their thoughts and beliefs were way far to match. His freedom

and her passivity were incompatibles. Yegor hated the circumstance in which he married

her, a cow girl, and hated even more the fact she accepted knowing he was drunk when this

happened. He truly believed that his life was motivated by his ability to hunt and that this

was all that mattered. Pelageya, unlike him, only wanted to live as his wife again.
