Welcome to the Autumn issue of The Ideal Bathroom – it’s been a busy summer at Ideal and for many of our brand partners, therefore we have lots to share with you in this edition.

Our own brand range ‘Essential’ showcases a number of new products, plus we have made significant investment in the brand, find out more on page 18.

We also report on our exciting new partnership with shower specialist April Products. As the new sole national distributor of such a strong enclosure brand, we really feel that April and Ideal Bathrooms

are a great fit. So, a big welcome to our newest member of the Ideal Bathrooms brand family.

Our parent Saint-Gobain Group celebrates an amazing 350 years milestone since its foundation and Ideal Bathrooms joined in with its own celebrations – plenty of pictures

recording an 80’s day to mark our own business’ heritage and a challenging 350 mile cycle ride from London to Paris, which two members of the management team took part in.

There is a special edition of our “Who Is…?” in this issue, which features our very own Kim Kirby-Earnshaw, who has completed 25 years’ service with us – a special

achievement by a loyal employee who has made such a huge and far reaching impact on the business.

Plus of course our usual contributions from our supplier partners, product news inThe Buzz and other news items to interest you.

Enjoy your read and we hope you have a strong trading quarter in the traditionally busy Autumn bathroom period.

Yours,

Danielle LillisCommercial Director - Ideal Bathrooms

JUST THE TONIC: IDEAL STANDARD LAUNCHES ALLIANCE OF FORM AND FUNCTION, WITH TONIC II

BATHROOM COLLECTION—

AquaBlade® Ideal Standard’s exclusive and patented flush technology offers the best superior flushing performance ever, even at low water volumes.

Using an innovative ‘Microslot’ technology the AquaBlade® system delivers optimum water flow from the top of the bowl on every flush and covers every inch of the ceramic, keeping the toilet bowl immaculately clean - and the flush surprisingly quiet.

Designed with both performance and aesthetics in mind, the strategic location of the channels higher up the bowl ensures a more beautiful looking WC as the often unsightly “rim” of the toilet becomes invisible when the seat is down.

The AquaBlade® WC is easier to clean and much more hygienic than any other toilet currently available and splashing during the flushing process is greatly reduced, meaning fewer bacteria particles are released into the air upon flushing.

The first range to be equipped with AquaBlade® is Tonic II.

German enamelled steel bathroom manufacturer, Bette, has analysed its bath range to identify the factors that make a bath

really comfortable, and has used the research to create the new BetteComodo – an enamelled steel bath that is extremely

comfortable and looks stylish too.

The BetteComodo (Italian for ‘comfort’) is perfect for those who like to take frequent, long baths. It is available in white and many

other colours in three sizes, with matching enamelled steel washbasins, also available. All have a thirty year warranty.

BetteComodo has a comfortable width at the head end, the radius even widens slightly, and the edge serves as a support

for the arms. In order to be comfortable, a bath must not be too low, so the BetteComodo is 45 cm deep, which is deep enough to prevent even tall people’s knees sticking out of

the water.

2. You’ve been appointed the sole national distributor for April Products and their range of enclosures. Is this a key growth area for Ideal Bathrooms? What more can you tell us about this new and exciting partnership?

We are delighted to be working with April Products because we do see showers as a key area for growth and wish to build our strength in this product sector to match our high presence in the sanitaryware sector.

Designs can move quickly in the shower enclosure sector, a fact which has facilitated the influx of products from areas of the world where production costs are lower. April is a UK manufacturer and a perfect partner, putting us in a position to offer great designs at affordable prices. This is an exciting joint venture with a shower specialist who is committed to the traditional channels of distribution.

3. We are told the economy is continuing to recover with a new Conservative majority government continuing its drive to eliminate the deficit. How do you see this affecting bathroom businesses?

There is some debate still to be held principally focusing on the difference between reducing the deficit and reducing the debt. I remain slightly concerned that the majority government may strive unrealistically to reduce not just the deficit but also debt through further austerity.

Other economic indicators are looking much more positive. The bathroom market is heavily driven by housing start numbers and home movers, so the bathroom business will benefit from a positive building programme and house moving stimulating both new build and home improvement business.

The election campaign was very jingoistic. Whilst we all read of improvements, we are not really feeling it yet so I am still a little hesitant

in forecasting great growth and see 2015 as more of a year of consolidation.

However on the retail showroom side, everyone seems to be reporting some increased activity and as a company we are also showing very encouraging growth for the first half of 2015 over 2014.

4. You are in the throes of a relaunch of a new range of the popular Essential collection. How will this affect the positioning of the brand?

We are indeed revising our Essential range retaining the same strategy of offering retail showrooms products at prices to compete against the internet and multiples, where main line brands may find it difficult.

We feel we needed to improve and widen our range at the highly price-conscious end of the market but with reliable service and a guarantee that the product comes from a reputable source, which is what the Ideal Bathroom endorsement brings.

Essential does not compete with the main brand portfolios. We remain committed to our brands policy and the new Essential collection allows us to compete at the lower level as well.

1. You’ve introduced a new marketing campaign with your Race to Dubai customer incentive. This is the first incentive programme you have run for 10 years. Why have you decided that now is the right time to do so?

Historically Ideal Bathrooms have been hesitant to get involved in incentives. However, watching from the sidelines we have seen some incentives in the heating, plumbing and bathroom sector being very successful.

Over recent months and years we have concentrated on the shifting sands of the marketplace such as the influence of the internet and on our company infrastructure to cope with this developing market focus.

We now feel we are in a good shape to look at other marketing and promotional activity. Our own 30th anniversary celebrations in 2011 were so well received that we wanted to remind our customers that Ideal Bathrooms is still the major player in bathroom distribution.

We have a good team now in place and strong marketing. We have gathered momentum during the difficult trading conditions of 2014 and want to capitalise on our initiatives with heightened engagement with customers. We see our Race to Dubai as an integral part of our customer engagement programme.

Steve Gillespie adds “It was certainly hard but also rewarding personally. To take on the challenge demanded commitment over several months but the camaraderie and the exhilaration of succeeding were well worth all the effort. And the money we raised is going to a wonderful cause.”

In fact the efforts required over the four days were the last stage following months of preparation training – from January snows to summer heatwaves – necessary to make sure they were both fit enough to take on such an arduous ride. As reward for their great effort,

the pair raised a magnificent £1500 towards the Saint-Gobain Together Partnership total, which has already topped

£100,000 and which will benefit MacMillan Cancer Support, the groups chosen charity for 2014/15.

RUNNING HOT—

What a way to spend a long weekend! Whilst most of us were relaxing on our days off, Ideal Bathrooms’ two Steve’s (Gillespie, Financial Controller at Milton Keynes and Hooley, Northern Regional Sales Manager) took on a huge challenge instead. They joined over 120 other keen cyclists on a charity cycle ride organised by our parent Saint-Gobain Group as part of their 350 years celebrations.

Whilst the route took in some of the beautiful countryside of northern France, it was certainly a big challenge as it involved a gruelling 350 mile ride in four days from London to Calais and on to the groups’ original headquarters, and now archives, in Blois in France’s Loire Valley.

And a “well done” to both, who successfully completed this extreme challenge. “This was no comfortable summer day out” says Stephen Hooley “It was four very strenuous days in the saddle for six to seven hours covering 100 miles plus every day and a rise of over 10,000 feet over the four days.”

"It is all about building partnerships in an informal and enjoyable way with customers who have supported Twyford Bathrooms through us over the years and is an excellent forum to discuss wider issues in the bathroom industry." John Bagshaw, Ideal Bathrooms Managing Director

Ideal Bathrooms again joined forces with Twyford Bathrooms to hold its sponsored golf day on 20th July. Held at Woburn Golf Club, home to three championship standard courses, this year’s golfers enjoyed the challenges of the Duchess course. Set within 200 acres of mixed woodland the Duchess Course sports tree lined fairways offering a challenge to any level of golfer.

This is a keenly anticipated event which has become a popular favourite amongst our golfing customers and a regular feature of Ideal Bathrooms’ social calendar.

“Once again Twyford Bathrooms were extremely pleased to be sponsoring Ideal Bathrooms’ annual golf day. It was a great golfing day and an enjoyable, if competitive, event." says Twyford National Account Manager, Paul Stenning.

WOBURN GOLF DAY—

The day consisted of some much needed practice on the Driving Range, 18 holes of golf and an evening meal followed by presentations of prizes and a charity auction. Guests were also lucky enough to witness the nail biting final day of the Open Championship at St Andrews over dinner in the fine surroundings of Woburn Golf Club.

The day was fully subscribed with forty keen golfers participating in the event. The individual first prize was won by Paul Stewart from Richmonds of London. After just being pipped to the title last year, he scored an impressive 39 points playing off a handicap of 8, quite an achievement on a challenging course. On receiving his prize Paul thanked Ideal Bathrooms and Twyford for putting on another fantastic day.

The Golf Day raised a total of £1,244 at the evening dinner from an auction including a round of golf for four at Woburn and a four ball at the Belfry, and from envelope donations which will be added to the funds for Ideal Bathrooms’ charity partner – MacMillan Cancer Research. So a big thank-you to all who so kindly contributed.

Ideal Bathrooms Managing Director, John Bagshaw says “The Golf day has become a highly popular annual event for Ideal Bathrooms’

golfing customers. It is all about building partnerships in an informal and enjoyable way with customers who have supported Twyford Bathrooms through us over the years and is an excellent forum to discuss wider issues in the bathroom industry”

Finally, it is with sadness that we bid farewell

to Paul Stenning, National Account Manager at Twyfords, who is moving on to new challenges. Paul has been Ideal Bathrooms' Account Manager for over 5 years and as a keen golfer has always been a major driver for running these annual golf days. From all at Ideal Bathrooms we’d like to say thank-you and wish him all the best in the future.

WHAT’S NEW | The latest news from Ideal Bathrooms

This year is a special and historic one for our parent group Saint-Gobain as it celebrates an astonishing 350 years milestone. Each business within this multinational conglomerate is celebrating its own heritage as part of the group. Each of the 41 companies is producing a time capsule to be opened in 100 years’ time to give future custodians of the business an insight into the unique business as it exists today. Each capsule will highlight the people, the community involvement and the heritage of the company.

Page 15: The Ideal Bathroom Magazine 17

At Ideal Bathrooms we had our own celebrations in 2011 for our 30th anniversary and, as part of the groups’ 350th events, we held an 80’s day as a reminder of our 34 year heritage with the aptly named ‘Born in 1981’ the theme for the day, with all staff involved in a fun and memorable day whilst also raising money for charity.

Staff at Milton Keynes dressed up in 80’s gear, some dusted down their favourite get up from that decade, whilst others recreated some classic 80’s moments from pop, film and the world of sport. Importantly the whole day raised money for Ideal Bathrooms' chosen charity - Macmillan, and was a great way to celebrate our part in the Saint-Gobain journey.

“Ideal Bathrooms is built on its people” says Managing director John Bagshaw “Without their commitment we would not be where we are today. The celebrations recognised and acknowledged this and were an excellent opportunity to engage with all our staff. Let’s hope when the time capsules are opened in a 100 years’ time, all the businesses will still be leading the way forward in their respective markets.”

The shower market is one which changes rapidly. Only recently we witnessed the cessation of trading by Manhattan – a sad time for a supplier with whom we have partnered in the past. This reflects the fact that showers are a difficult sector, being somewhat saturated and prone to cut price competition from areas with ultra-low production costs. Our very own Showerlux brand almost suffered the same fate as Manhattan in 2011, but fortunately our agreement to distribute on behalf of Duscholux enabled this pioneering, well-loved brand to remain in the UK.

But on a brighter, more optimistic note - Shower Enclosures are a fantastic product category. They remain a growing sector that has evolved in line with the changing needs of the consumer, and the innovation in product design - through both function and fashion - have seen this product category transform ahead of many others in the bathroom industry.

In contrast to this, Ideal Bathrooms are not really renowned for distributing shower enclosures. When you think of us, your first thoughts will no doubt be to industry giants such as Ideal Standard and Roca. We are changing this and the portfolio of brands we now stock showcases our strongest enclosure category in our 34 year history, and one we’re extremely proud of.

Ideal Bathrooms now carry over £1m of shower enclosures stock across 5 brands. Our new Ideal partner April Products, coupled with our exclusive Showerlux brand and the extensive shower offering from our other branded partners Ideal Standard, Twyfords and Kinedo, mean we stock over 600 SKU’s.

So you may not currently think shower enclosures and automatically think Ideal Bathrooms - but maybe it’s now time you did.

THE PROMISE—

To reinforce our commitment as a specialist distributor of shower enclosures, Ideal

Bathrooms are investing heavily to provide an increased stock holding of the key ranges. This comes with a pledge to always have the

best-selling SKU’s in stock and to back this up by providing expert sales knowledge, both in

the field and via our sales office.

‘BEST SELLERS ALWAYS IN

Working with our brand partners and reviewing sales history and the display base, a core range

of the best selling SKUs has been selected from April Products, Showerlux, Twyfords, Ideal

Standard and Kinedo and will be stocked in increased depth across Ideal Bathrooms’ depots.

This enables us to 100% pledge to our customers, that this range will be ‘Always in Stock’ and

Director, said: “From the beginning the aim of April Products was to have a product offering aimed primarily at the premier UK Bathroom Distributors. After discussions earlier this year with Ideal Bathroom Directors, Danielle Lillis (Commercial) and Kim Kirby Earnshaw (Operations), it became increasingly apparent that Ideal Bathrooms would be the perfect partner in achieving our exciting plans for growth”. Richard added “Ideal Bathrooms have further welcomed the opportunity of joining our other distribution partners in offering the Prestige Rebate Scheme to all April customers, an incentive which makes buying, supplying and displaying April Products more rewarding”.

The appointment of Ideal Bathrooms as one of April’s prestigious group of distributors will ensure availability of the Brand Nationally.

Danielle Lillis, Ideal Bathrooms Commercial Director, states: “We are very excited to have secured the national distributorship for April Products. This is a big initiative for us as it is the first brand partner we have added for some years. They are an excellent addition and a perfect fit with our product portfolio, having a range of products to complement our existing bathroom brands in a sector we have targeted for growth.”

"Kim is someone rather special and an example to us all. She is liked and respected by colleagues, customers and suppliers alike." John Bagshaw, Ideal Bathrooms Managing Director

This year Operations Director Kim Kirby-Earnshaw celebrates 25 years with the company, so we decided to dedicate this “Who is …?” to one of our very own industry guru’s in recognition of her contribution to our success over the years.

Kim started working at Ideal Bathrooms’ sales office in 1990, taking orders from many of the same customers who she still deals with today. Over the last 25 years Kim has been a key player in the company’s growth.

As Operations Director, Kim is responsible for all of the company’s logistics operation, purchasing and the internal sales team. Kim ensures that everything runs smoothly and that Ideal Bathrooms continues to provide the first class service that our customers have come to expect.

What do you consider the most significant developments you have been involved with?

Just about the whole of 2008 was a memorable year for me. In March we relocated from Kingston to Hayes, in April we acquired In-line Sales & Distribution of Glasgow and in September I got married. Quite a year!

What has been the most challenging role for you?

What I love about my job is that every day is challenging, but without doubt my biggest

KIM KIRBY-EARNSHAW—

BUSINESS

You joined the company in its fledgling days. What were your initial impressions of Ideal Bathrooms at that time?

To be perfectly honest, when I walked into the office, which was huge, there were just three desks in it. I thought “they are being optimistic. This business won’t last long.” How wrong could I have been?

WHO IS...? | An insight into the m arket’s leading figures

challenge is to ensure that Ideal Bathrooms exemplary service record is consistent across all depots and for all customers. We are currently averaging an OTIF (On Time In Full deliveries) of 98% - so I have 2% to still work on!

What have been the most notable changes in the role of the distributor and industry practices over the years?

The biggest change was seeing manufacturers wanting to supply both through distribution channels and direct. This is challenging the role of the distributor.

Over the years the role of the distributor has grown dramatically with merchants reducing their stockholding at various times of economic hardship. This has made the distributor’s role stronger and fundamental to our developing a service offering which is recognised by retailers as the most effective and economical way of obtaining their products for their customers.

What is the most successful range in your history?

The most successful product range would have to be Studio by Ideal Standard. Virtually 20 years old and still going strong – it shows that good design pays.

Would you share with us any industry stories or glorious successes or amusing instances that have stuck in your mind during your 25 years?

about employing me. My daughter was only 6 months old and he was concerned how I would manage holding down a full time role and being a full time mother, Little did he know I had a fantastic family… I think it’s fair to say I proved him wrong…

Who has been a particular inspiration to you?

My Sister – She sadly lost her husband at the age of 33 and through the pain and grief still managed to raise 4 children (aged 5,7,9 & 10) on her own.

For whom in the bathroom business do you have the most respect?

Alan Dodds, Managing Director of Roca, a strong leader for the brand and a gentleman at all times.

Who has had the biggest influence on your career?

I would say the Saint-Gobain Group as a whole, since their acquisition of Ideal Bathrooms. They have inspired me as a business and given great support and helped me progress personally.

“On behalf of everyone at Ideal Bathrooms, thank you Kim for 25 years” says Managing Director John Bagshaw “We are delighted to see employees with long service because our ethos is to promote a friendly, caring, progressive environment that encourages long service. Kim is someone rather special and an example to us all. She is liked and respected by colleagues, customers and suppliers alike. Thanks for the first 25 years Kim – long they may continue!”

"It is vital that customers can count on our knowledge and support in all they do and it is equally important that the ASMs communicate the benefits of Ideal Bathrooms’ service in helping customers in their businesses."

SOUTHERN SALES TEAM— In addition, the Southern team has changed significantly. Whilst the area covered remains as before, we have a new Regional Sales Manager and new members of his team.

Chris Dodds is our recently appointed Regional Sales Manager for the Southern region. He is a bathroom industry specialist bringing extensive experience in bathroom distribution sales. He is responsible for developing the Southern territory, supporting his team of Area Sales Managers in driving sales, whilst maintaining the company’s renowned customer service.

“This is an exciting challenge for me personally and my team” says Chris “Ideal Bathrooms is the big name in bathroom distribution and I am looking forward to us building on our strengths throughout the south of the country. I have got a great team and we are all totally committed to supporting our customers in every way we can.”

Lucy Russell joins Chris’s team to look after the South West area. Lucy has considerable experience in the FMCG retail sector and is looking forward to applying her knowledge to the bathroom industry.

Dave Garner, who won Ideal Bathrooms’ Showroom Display Award last year for the individual sales person generating the highest number of new showroom displays,

moves from the North West to take over the North London area, where his acknowledged expertise assisting showrooms in their displays will be invaluable.

Completing the team are Jordan Southan, Area Sales Manager for the South East who also won an Ideal Bathrooms sales award last year as the Sales Person of the year and Mark Smedley, who has been with Ideal Bathrooms for six years and covers the Midlands area.

“The sales team is the all important link with customers” says Chris. “It is vital that customers can count on our knowledge and support in all they do and it is equally important that the ASMs communicate the benefits of Ideal Bathrooms’ service in helping customers in their businesses.”

It’s important that companies fully understand and act on customer needs. This impacts on all aspects of our businesses – not least in our field sales contact with you – our customers.

To further advance our customer service in the field, we’ve reorganised our sales structure last year into Northern and Southern regions, each with a regional sales manager running a team of area sales managers.

LOOKING SOUTH—

Page 33: The Ideal Bathroom Magazine 17

WHAT’S NEW—Chris Dodds outlines his plans for the Southern Region.

Our team has certainly changed. New people from outside and inside the bathroom industry have given us the opportunity to refocus on what we want to achieve together.

A key feature of the sales teams remit is to be proactive in customer liaison. A visit from someone from Ideal Bathrooms must be something which provides a positive benefit for you. We see our key function as helping your business to develop. This means being knowledgeable of the industry in total and about our customers’ needs, bringing our experience in dealing with a wide cross section of bathroom businesses and of what has been successful for them, to provide information to help other customers.

Our customers are our business partners and we succeed by helping you. Because we make a point of knowing your business we are in a position to identify opportunities which we can work together on. We want you to know how important it is to us to ensure you can count on us to not only provide the products you need but also the support you would like.

To strengthen our service further we are in the process of recruiting an additional Area Sales Manager to cover parts of London and the South East. This addition will ensure that our customers are served more frequently and we can work closer with our customers to develop their business.

In short, we are looking proactively at further strengthening customer relationships to benefit us all – and that’s how I see our role as the Southern Sales Team.
