a Letter from the President

Our theme for this 44th annual remembrance and celebration of Dr. King is “Let’s Not Forget to Remember”. As we look backward, we should note that on November 2, 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr.

became the first black and the third American to have a national holiday named in his honor.

Dr. King dedicated his life to teaching and demonstrating that nonviolence is the only viable means to solving man’s problems and differences. As we reflect on the life of Dr. King, I can remember March 7, 1965 when 600 of us lined up to walk from Selma to Montgomery, to march for voting rights. When we tried to cross the Edmund Pettis Bridge over the Alabama River, we were met by state troopers. They attacked us with tear gas, bullwhips and nightsticks. It became known as Bloody Sunday and the national outcry over the brutality that day led to the enactment of the Voting Rights Act.

I am often asked how the contributions of Dr. King should be remembered. No, he would not have said to hold a dinner--so why do we continue to do so. We do so because we never want to forget what this country was before he became the leader of a movement to eradicate injustice and racial hatred. We do so because we recognize that many Americans wish to salute Dr. King in a public way. We do so because this event allows us to demonstrate that we have not forgotten; and we do so because it is a way of helping to fulfill his dreams relating to education for our youth and unity across racial, cultural and gender lines.

I am reminded of the words of Dr. King when he addressed the subject of how he should be remembered. He cited these words on Sunday, February 4, 1968 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta where his father was the Pastor. As a reminder, the following are his words:

“If any of you are around when I have to meet my day, I don’t want a long funeral. And if you get somebody to deliver the eulogy, tell him not to talk too long. Tell them not to mention that I have a Noble Peace Prize. That isn’t important. Tell them not to mention that I have three or four hundred other awards. That’s not important. Tell them not to mention where I went to school. I’d like somebody to mention that day, that, Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others. I’d like for somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day that I did try to feed the hungry. And I want you to be able to say that day that I did try in my life to clothe those who were naked. I want you to say on that day that I did try, in my life, to visit those who were in prison. I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity.”

So we gather tonight to remind ourselves not to forget the message of Dr. King. As we confront confusion on the political and social scene and as we view the evening news, let’s us not forget to remember what Dr. King stood for. With more young men in prison than in college in this nation, with thousands of people across the world suffering from all kinds of illnesses and our elderly poor in dire need, let us re-commit our lives to not just loving our fellow man and woman but becoming involved.

We are honored by your presence tonight and view such as a demonstration that you and I have not forgotten.

When Al Goldfarb, Western Illinois University’s 10th president, officially took office July 1, 2002, the University outlined goals and values within the framework of a strategic plan, expanded the University’s operations in the Quad Cities through a gift from Deere and Company of facilities and land which became the WIU-QC Riverfront Campus, which officially opened Jan. 17, 2011, and designated the southwest section of the Macomb campus as a fine arts quadrant and location for a new Performing Arts Center.

Under his leadership, Western’s student and employee population became more diverse. Goldfarb also expanded WIU’s Cost Guarantee program to include graduate degree students, making Western the only public university in the state which guarantees tuition, fees, and room and board at the undergraduate and graduate level. The University now offers its first doctoral program, an Educational Doctorate (Ed.D.) degree in educational leadership for elementary and secondary school administrators. New undergraduate degree programs in nursing, engineering, forensic chemistry and emergency management, along with such graduate degree programs as museum studies and biology-zoo and aquarium studies, were added to Western’s major degree programs during his tenure.

In 2010, Goldfarb was appointed by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn to serve on the new State of Illinois’ Serve Illinois Commission, which is designed to enhance and support community volunteerism and administer the AmeriCorps Illinois program. He has served as the chair of the Summit League Presidents Council and is a member of the Executive Board for The Renaissance Group, a national consortium of colleges and universities with a major commitment to the preparation of educational professionals.

Goldfarb has served as president of the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education and as a member of the Illinois Arts Council. He received service awards from the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education, the Illinois Theatre Association, and the American College Theatre Festival.

He has co-authored two theatre textbooks and co-edited two books. He collaborated on his textbooks with Edwin Wilson, retired Broadway theatre critic for the Wall Street Journal. Theatrical Performance During the Holocaust, which he co-edited with Rebecca Rovit, was a 1999 National Jewish Book Award Finalist. Goldfarb has also authored numerous articles on theatre.

Goldfarb and his wife, Elaine, have two children. Their daughter, Deborah, works as a lawyer in San Francisco, California; their son, Jason, is a Ph.D. student at University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois.

Goldfarb retired as president of Western Illinois University June 30, 2011.

Dr. Michael J. Hogan, the 18th president of the University of Illinois, has had a four-decade career in public higher education. He has served as resident of the University of Connecticut, in senior administrative positions at The Ohio State University where he was executive dean of the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences and at the University of Iowa where he was executive vice president, and as a faculty member at Miami University, University of Stony Brook, and the University of Texas.

A noted historian, he is the author or editor of nine books and numerous scholarly articles and essays. He served for 15 years as editor of Diplomatic History, and international journal of record for specialists in diplomacy and foreign affairs; served on the U.S. Department of State’s Advisory Committee on Diplomatic Documentation; and has been a fellow at the Harry S. Truman Institute and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Dr. Hogan earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Northern Iowa, where he majored in English with minors in history and classics. He received his master’s and doctorate degrees in history at the University of Iowa.

The Rev,. Clyde H. Brooks, ICDHR Chairman, was honored by the America Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC) for his commitment to promoting True Family Values throughout the nation. He along with the Rev. Dr. Steven J. Thurston, President of the National Baptist Convention of America and Pastor of the New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church received the honor, presented by Dr. Michael Jenkins, Chairman of the America Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC). The ACLC in the leading force throughout North and South America promoting the importance of the family and developing strong family values. In September, Rev. Brooks joined Dr. Jenkins and Rev. Kazuo Takami, ACLC Midwest Chairman in South Korea to promote a greater appreciation for diversity inclusiveness among the more than 226 clans in that nation.

Charter one BanK founDation ProJeCt

The ICDHR provided financial literacy workshops in the Austin community through the generosity of The Charter One Bank Foundation, with the support of Matthew Manning, Business Banking Officer and Michelle Smolinski, Vice President, Manager of Community Relations. The BOCA (Banking on Change in Austin) project was an 8-week initiative which involved three core partners: the community, the ICDHR and Charter One Bank. The purpose of this project was to educate and expand the communities understanding of the importance of credit, savings and investments.

The final culminating event was a business plan competition, and Ms. Nicole Harvey, Executive Director of the EDEN Advocacy CDC was the top winner of $500!

Because of the vision of Charter One Bank and their commitment to creating opportunities within the communities that they serve, the ICDHR was able to inform, educate and expand opportunities for the Austin community. We look forward to expanding BOCA and other initiatives like this throughout Chicagoland and throughout the State of Illinois.

A special thanks to Dr. Michael hogan, President of the University of Illinois for serving as our speaker and providing ICDHR with an opportunity to promote scholarship opportunities for our youth. A special thanks to the honorable rahm emanuel, Mayor of the City of Chicago for taking time from his busy schedule to be with us tonight. Pastor george Daniels of the First Baptist Congregational Church continues his long tradition of promoting the success of this event. The support of John Burgess, Managing Director of International Services, Inc. is unequalled and we remain deeply grateful. We thank Attorney Joe eichberger for his legal expertise in guiding our efforts. A special thank you is due Jeffery Michalczyk for chairing our Scholarship Committee.
