MY MOTTO, MY HOPE, MY GOAL, MY MISSION:

My hope is to have a safe and secure environment in which your child can learn. I want my students to become lifelong learners. My hope is that they will not be afraid to take risks, that they will do their best everyday in completing their work, and that they will not be afraid to try new things. With your help I believe every child in here will be a success.

WRITINGLucy Calkins is a well known

educational researcher in the areas of reading and writing. If you google her, you will see all she has written and accomplished. As a school we have a school wide focus in writing and we are using Lucy’s units of study to guide our journey. This will be my sixth year implementing and each year I am learning more and more from this approach. You will be amazed at what your children will be scribing by the end of the year.

COGNITIVELY GUIDED INSTRUCTION Cognitively Guided Instruction is a

child centered approach to doing math. The students are given a word problem to solve and are asked to prove their work. We all know 2 plus 2 is 4. I ask the students to draw out the 4 to prove they “get” it. It is very eye opening for me as a teacher to see who can count and who has things memorized. It is empowering for the students as well because they share their answers and learn from each other. It is an awesome approach to learning.

HOMEWORK AND READING Sight words are your number one priority for

homework during the week. Practice them with your child everyday. If they are already reading make sure they can find the sight words in books you read nightly.

Reading everyday is second only to sight words. Reading fifteen minutes everyday with your child exposes them to a million words a year. (Set your TVs to closed captioning, your child will be reading and not even realize it!)

Homework can stay in the folder. It does not need to come in every week. We would like to see it at the end of the month so that we can see that you are reading with your child regularly.

BIRTHDAYS Birthdays can be celebrated on your

child’s actual day. If your child’s birthday falls on the weekend or a holiday, just let me know when he/she wants to celebrate it. If your child has a summer birthday, feel free to celebrate their half birthday wherever that may fall.

We are trying to be healthier at Arroyo. If you can make the treats small and not full of sugar, that is very helpful. Please do not make this your child’s actual party. Large party favor bags are not necessary however if you would like to send in a pencil in lieu of a treat that is perfect.

DINO DASH & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Dino Dash is the Tustin Public School Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. Please consider joining us on November 1 for this fun event. We are also looking for 10 volunteers to help with the event either the day of or the two days before.

Please sign up to volunteer in the classroom. There are weekly timeslots, monthly timeslots, and once a trimester time slots. No amount of volunteering is too little!
