Our image of the child affects everything we do with children.

When educators choose an image of the child as a strong, resourceful, and capable mighty learner and citizen, they enter into relationships with children. They learn about what the children know and want to know, and they have an opportunity to respond to that information through their curriculum decisions.

This image affirms each child’s right to be listened to, treated with respect, and participate in daily decisions that affect him or her. By understanding this image, the intention of interactions shifts from “doing to” a child to “participating with” each child.
