INTRODUCTION

In previous unit you have learn about some economic corps of West Bengal, and this unit you will the major cash crop of West Bengal,that is Jute.So it is called ‘Golden Fibre’.

JUTE, A PRODUCT OF WEST BENGALJUTE, A PRODUCT OF WEST BENGAL•Jute is a rough fibre made from the stems of a tropical plant. There is a large use of jute products in our day today life.

• Economic Value: So great is its economic value that a huge number of farmers are engaged in the cultivation of jute in West Bengal. As an industrial crop it is quite cheap and in importance it is only next to cotton. The things made from jute are also eco-friendly.•Position of West Bengal in India:

It is widely cultivated in West Bengal,Assam,Bihar,U.P , Orissa etc. But West Bengal holds 1st position in India.

. Places where it is produced :- It is basically produced in

Malda,Nadia,Howra,Hoogly,Burdwan, South Dinajpur,Midnapore,North Dinajpur,Cooch Bihar. • Various Parts of Jute:-

There are four Parts of Jute i.e.; Ordinary Jute Fibre, Superior Jute Fibre, Jute Butts & Jute Stalks. • Products Made From Jute:-

Various types of bags,wools,ropes,sacks,and covers are made from the ordinary jute fibres.The superior jute fibres are used for making carpets,twine,curtains,cloths, etc.Jute Butts are used in paper making. The jute stalks are used as fuel and material for walling or fencing.

•Favourable Climate:-Being a rainy season crop, jute thrives well in moist

heat.It can be grown in all part of the tropics and sub-tropics, provided that soil is deep enough,rainfall is well distributed and temperature is favourable.

•Preperation of Land:-Jute requires clod-free seed bed.The land is ploughed

and cross-ploughed several times.In soils manure is used before sowing during the preparation of the land.

•Various steps of making jute fibres:-At the time of hervesting plants are cut or uprooted

near the ground level.The hervested plants are left on dry land for two or three days.Then are taken to a ditch,pond or tank for retting,a micro biological process.After retting is complete the stalks are stripped.Thw separated fibre is then rinsed and piled on the ground. Finally, strands are opened out,hung up in the sun to dry and tied into bales and made ready for the market.

The major problems of jute growers are the low market price and low demand of jute due to excessive use of plastic products.Because of non-availability of high yielding variety(HYV) jute seeds on the sowing period,farmers are not interested in HYV jute cultivation

MAJOR PROBLEMS OF JUTE CULTIVATION

FUTURE OF JUTE CULTIVATION:-FUTURE OF JUTE CULTIVATION:- Jute is a nature fibre popularly known as the Golden Fibre.It is one of the cheapest and the strongest of all natural fibres and considered as fibre of the future.To enhance the cultivation of jute, to reduce the expences of jute cultivation & to improve the quality of jute,Indian Agricultural Research Institute & Indian Central jute committee are engaged in different researches.

GOVT. POLICY:-

Our government has taken different policies such as National Jute policy-2005,Essencial Commodity Act-1955,Foreign Trade Policy-2009-2014,Exim policy India-2004-09etc to enhance the market of jute products all over the World, to secure the rights of the farmers engaged to it, to provide all essential commodities & make aware the farmers & the related persons about the cultivation of jute.Let us Sum Up:-

In the whole unit you have learnt the importants of jute and its economic value, its various products & its eco-friendly nature. In the next unit you will learn about importance of fibres.
