Pakistan, the historic ally of theTaliban, says it will do anything re-quired by Kabul to support anAfghan-led peace process, but thereis a wide degree of scepticism inAfghanistan and the United Statesabout its sincerity.

“Both sides agreed on the need tostrengthen mutualcooperation to over-come the commonchallenges of terror-ism and extremismand expressed theirresolve to work forthe stability andpeace of both thecountries,” Gilani’soffice said.

China to surpass Indiaas top gold buyer

Mumbai, February 16

China is set to overtake Indiaas the world’s largest gold buyerthis year as demand for the met-al for jewellery and as a safe-haven investment surges, theWorld Gold Council (WGC) saidThursday.

Global demand hit 4,067.1tonnes in 2011 -- edging up 0.4percent year-on-year -- worth anestimated $205.5 billion, the firsttime demand has surpassed$200 billion, the council said inits latest annual report.

Gold prices rose to a recordover $1,920 an ounce in Septem-ber on frenzied buying by indi-viduals, investment funds andcentral banks in the aftermath ofa US credit rating downgradeand plunging global equity mar-

kets. Prices have slipped sincebut still hover around $1,700 perounce.

India, the largest gold con-sumer and importer, saw a 7.0-

percent decline in demand year-on-year to 933.4 tonnes last year, while demand from Chinajumped 20.0 percent to 769.8tonnes in the same period.

“There was a major boost tothe overall demand from China,a trend we see continuing in thenew year,” said Marcus Grubb,WGC’s investment managing di-rector. “It is likely that China willemerge as the largest gold mar-ket in the world for the first timein 2012.”

India, where gold is widelypurchased for religious and cere-monial occasions, consumedless of the yellow metal in 2011largely because of a weak rupee, which made imports of gold --priced in US dollars -- more ex-pensive.“The domestic currencyfell precipitously in the secondhalf of 2011, on foreign capitaloutflows. The rapid rise and fallin the rupee and resulting localgold price swings impacted goldbuying,” the report said. AFP

Miyazato sizzles in Thai heatPattaya, February 16

Japan's Ai Miyazato puton a performance to matchthe sizzling heat as she fireda five-under 67 to take thefirst round lead in the $1.5million Honda LPGA Thai-land tournament Thursday.

Miyazato, who won thesame tournament two yearsago, took a one-shot leadover Australian veteran Kar-rie Webb, as well as Swe-den's Anna Nordqvist andKoreans Amy Yang, Se Ri Pakand Na Yeon Choi who allshot 68.

The Japanese player setthe Siam Country Clubcourse alight with fivebirdies and no bogeys.

"I'm really excited, but Ifeel very tired. It's been along day. I think it must bethe heat," said Miyazato, who hardly made a mistakein her round.

"I've been working onmy short game and it seemsto be paying off. I like thiscourse, but the greens aretricky."

P r e - t o u r n a m e n tfavourite and world numberone Yani Tseng of Taiwancould not find her rhythmand had to be content with aone-over 73.

Making the early pacewere Webb and Nordqvist.

"Four birdies and no bo-geys. I'm pretty happy withthat," said Webb, currentlyranked 20th in the world.

"The conditions, apartfrom the heat, were good,"she said, speaking for manyplayers who battled swelter-ing conditions.

"I was a little scratchy onthe front nine, but on theback nine I started to hit myirons better and gave myselfquite a few birdie chances."

Nordqvist was equallypleased with her round. "I

hit the ball really smoothand gave myself a lot ofbirdie opportunities. I neverreally had to fight for par."

American Stacy Lewishad looked to be poised totake the first round lead asshe arrived at the 18th holeon five-under.

But a disastrous triplebogey eight at the final hole,in which she ran intobunker trouble, ruined whathad been a good day. Heranguish was apparent as shethrew her putter into her

bag in disappointment atthe 18th, having to settle fora 70 in joint ninth place.

Leading the local chal-lenge was Numa Gulyana-mitta, who shot a three-un-der 69 for joint seventhplace, a fine performance inonly her second LPGA out-ing. Among the crowdfavourites Paula Creamerhad a roller-coaster start.Despite shooting a hole inone at the 12th, she endedwith a relatively modestround of even par 72.

London chiefs slammedfor ticket ‘secrecy’

London, February 16

Organisers of the London 2012Olympics have been accused in a re-port published on Thursday of dam-aging public confidence in the Gamesby being unduly secretive about theissue of ticket sales.

There has been a huge demand fortickets but the LondonOrganising Committeeof the Olympic Games'status as a private com-pany meant it has beenable to withhold infor-mation about sales.

According to theLondon Assembly localauthority, this makesLOCOG exempt fromrequests under free-dom of informationlaws.

Concerns have been raised aboutthe share of tickets going to sponsorsinstead of to fans.

A report by the assembly's Econo-my, Culture and Sport Committee(ECS) said that after two years of ask-ing, it had still to receive answers toseveral questions about the 8.8 mil-lion Olympic and two million Para-lympics tickets.

"LOCOG's legal status should notexcuse them from the transparencyand openness we expect in other ar-eas of public life," committee chair-

man Dee Doocey stated.London 2012 has not provided a

detailed breakdown of how manytickets have been sold at what pricefor each event, according to the com-mittee's "Sold Out?" report.

In late 2010, London 2012 suggest-ed that out of the 8.8 million ticketsfor the Olympics, 2.5 million, or 28

percent, would cost£20 (24 euros, $31) orless.

It has refused toprovide informationto prove whethercheaper tickets werespread equally acrossall events or concen-trated in events suchas football, where sup-ply exceeds demand, the report said.

London 2012 wantsto raise between £20 million and £50million from Paralympic tickets aspart of its overall £500 million rev-enue target from all Olympic and Par-alympic ticket sales.

A London 2012 spokesman said itwould provide complete informationon ticket sales -- but only after it hadsold the final batch of tickets.

"We are committed to providing afull breakdown of ticket sales and be-lieve the best time to do this is oncewe have completed the final salesprocess," the spokesman said.

Whiteford, Canizares share lead in Avantha MastersGurgoan, February 16

Peter Whiteford of Scot-land and Spain's AlejandroCanizares left fancied oppo-nents behind to take thelead after the opening roundof the $2.4 million AvanthaMasters on Thursday.

The duo both shot six-under par 66 to head theleaderboard in India's richest golf event, tri-sanc-tioned by the European andAsian Tours and the Profes-sional Golf Tour of India(PGTI).

Federico Colombo ofItaly was one shot behind asplayers battled a wind-swept course at the DLFGolf and Country Club onthe outskirts of New Delhi.

Thailand's KiradechAphibarnrat and ThongchaiJaidee were bunched infourth place on 68 alongside

four other players, includingthe French duo of Jean-Bap-tiste Gonnet and GregoryHavret.

The 29-year-oldCanizares, looking for hisfirst win since 2006, was de-lighted after he birdied the18th hole to join Whitefordin the lead.

"It's always nice to finishon a high like that," he said."I didn't hit a great wedgeshot into the green so it wasnice to sink the putt.

"I played very steady andI putted quite nicely. Theonly mistake I made wasmissing a short putt on theseventh so I made a bogey. Ihad a couple of waywarddrives but nothing seriousand I felt very comfortable.”

"Hopefully I can keepthis going and be in con-tention going into the finalround," said Canizares.

Whiteford, who was one-under par at the turn, birdied four in a row fromthe 10th to shoot to the topof the board.

"It was the first time I'vehit the fairways in months,"said the 31-year-old Scot, chasing his first EuropeanTour title. "I probably didnot hit that many fairways, but it felt a lot better.

"I hit a lot more driversthan people usually do outthere and just took advan-tage of the course and bullyit a little. It can bite you easi-ly though if you're not care-ful."

Two-time Major winnerJohn Daly finished a poorseven-over par 79, with six bogeys and one birdie.Former British Open cham-pion Todd Hamilton alsohad a bad day with four-overpar 76.

Spike Lee fires back atMayweather on Lin

New York, February 16

Film director and pas-sionate New York Knickssupporter Spike Lee hasfired back at Floyd May-weather's comments thatall the hype around JeremyLin is about his race andnot his basketball skills.

Lee also spoke Wednes-day on MSNBC about theglobal "Lin-sanity" phe-nomenon that surroundsthe first US-born player ofTaiwanese and Chineseheritage, who has the mostpoints of any NBA player inhis first five starts since1976. "Don't try to explainit, dissect it," Lee said."We're just in the middle ofit and enjoy it. Especially ifyou are a Knick fan. "It's agreat American story. Agreat American story."

Lin, a 23-year-old pointguard who was an econom-ics major at Harvard, wentundrafted by the NBA, wascut last December by Gold-en State and Houston, andwas seeing little playingtime for the Knicks.

But when Carmelo An-thony was sidelined with agroin strain and AmareStoudemire was absent fora week after the death of hisbrother in a car crash, Linreceived his chance andmade the most of it.

After an already aston-ishing run of leading the

Knicks to five wins in a rowwith precision passing anddramatic drives to thehoop, Lin hit the winningthree-pointer with half-a-second remaining on Tues-day to defeat Toronto.

"Floyd Mayweather IHope You Watched JeremyHit The Gamewinning 3Pointer With .5 SecondsLeft. Our Guy Can BALLPLAIN AND SIMPLE.REC-OGNIZE." Lee posted onhis Twitter account.

Mayweather had saidthe hype around Lin was allbecause of his Asian her-itage. "Jeremy Lin is a goodplayer but all the hype is be-cause he's Asian. Blackplayers do what he doesevery night and don't getthe same praise," May-weather said in a Twitterposting on Monday. AFP

Four-goal Milan sink hapless ArsenalMilan, February 16

AC Milan all but bookedtheir place in the ChampionsLeague quarter-finals with aswashbuckling performance tothump hapless Arsenal 4-0 atthe San Siro on Wednesday.

A Kevin-Prince Boatengblockbuster, a Robinho braceand a penalty from ZlatanIbrahimovic gave the Italianstheir first win in seven Champi-ons League clashes againstEnglish opposition while alsoending a run of three straighthome defeats against PremierLeague teams.

It means the second round, second leg at the Emirates inthree weeks time should be lit-tle more than a formality forMassimiliano Allegri's players.

Not even the introduction ofThierry Henry in his final ap-pearance before returning toNew York Red Bulls could in-spire a surprisingly out of sortsGunners formation.

"We didn't have the best ofgames but we have to givecredit to Milan who punished

us on every goal. They were thebetter team on the day," saidArsenal goalkeeper WojciechSzczesny.

Any suggestions that Milanmight have had an inferiority

complex following their terri-ble run against the Englishwere shattered in a first half inwhich the hosts were com-posed and clinical on thecounter while the visitors were

unsettled and error-prone.Tomas Rosicky at one end

and Clarence Seedorf at theother traded sight-setters earlyon before Ignazio Abate had across deflected into the side-

netting. A lovely move from Mi-lan saw Luca Antonini chip theball to Ibrahimovic who teedup Urby Emanuelson but theDutch midfielder, on as an ear-ly substitute for Seedorf, could-n't match the neat build-upplay with a comparable finish.

The hosts went ahead on thequarter hour mark whenSzczesny scuffed a clearancestraight to Antonio Nocerinowho fed Boateng to crash a vol-ley in off the underside of thebar.

Nocerino thrashed a volleyover with Ibrahimovic scream-ing for a pass while the largelyanonymous Robin Van Persie'sfree-kick was headed tamely byLaurent Koscielny into goal-keeper Christian Abbiati'sarms. Another Arsenal mistakesaw Ibrahimovic, who was intigerish form all night, sentscampering down the left on 38minutes and he had time topick out Robinho to head infrom eight yards.

Arsene Wenger introducedHenry at half-time but anythoughts that might inspire the

Londoners were dispelledwithin four minutes as moretimid defending gave Robinhothe time and space to shoothome into the bottom cornerfrom the edge of the box.

Milan were ripping Arsenalapart on the counter and onesuch rapier attack with a three-on-two situation fell unfortu-nately to full-back Antoniniwhose finish was true to his oc-cupation.

Arsenal finally put togethera move of stunning quality on65 minutes with Henry flickingthe ball up for Van Persie to vol-ley goalwards but Abbiati'ssave matched what had comebefore it.

And yet 11 minutes fromtime Ibrahimovic hammeredthe final nail into Arsenal's cof-fin as he used his wealth of ex-perience to win a penalty incontact with Johan Djouroubefore putting away the spot-kick himself.

Abbiati would twice moredeny Van Persie whose volleywith his weaker right foot andheader were both kept out. AFP

Mallinder rules out England job

London, February 16

Northampton director ofrugby Jim Mallinder onThursday ruled himself outof the running to become thenext permanent Englandcoach.

Mallinder had been tout-ed as a replacement for Mar-tin Johnson, who resignedafter a wretched World Cupin New Zealand where a fail-ure to make the semi-finalswas compounded by severalembarrassing off-field inci-dents involving Englandplayers.

But former England re-serve coach Stuart Lancasterwas put in temporary chargefor the ongoing Six Nations.

Although Mallinder, whose Northampton sidewere beaten European Cupfinalists last season, wasconsidered one of the lead-ing English contenders forthe post, he said now was notthe time for him to coachEngland.

"No, I've not applied,"Mallinder told the BBC. "It'sprobably the best job in the

world coaching-wise. What agreat opportunity. But it'sgot to be the right thing atthe right time."

Mallinder's commentscame a day after the dead-line for applications to be-come England coach closed.

He was the second high-profile figure to rule himselfout of the running after for-mer All Blacks assistantcoach Wayne Smith, himselfpreviously in charge of Eng-lish Premiershipi clubNorthampton, said he wasno longer interested.

Smith told Wellington'sDominion Post newspaperthe job description he hadbeen supplied with was"waffly and looked like it wasfor the head of a PR compa-ny, rather than a rugbycoach".

But the former All Blackplaymaker also said the tim-ing involved in the job, which is scheduled to beginwith England's tour of SouthAfrica in June, clashed withhis new role as assistantcoach of Super 15 club theWaikato Chiefs. AFP

Midfielder Shirokov’s double gives Zenit edge over Benfica

Saint Petersburg, February 16

Russian champions Zenit StPetersburg came from a goaldown to beat Portuguese gi-ants Benfica 3-2 in their Cham-pions League last 16 first-legencounter here on Wednesday.

Zenit midfielder RomanShirokov netted a double - tak-ing his tally to five in this sea-son's competition - while sub-stitute Sergei Semak got thehosts other goal.

Benfica's goals came fromdefender Maxi Pereira andParaguayan striker Oscar Car-dozo, both after errors by goal-keeper Yury Zhevnov.

"It was a nervous match,"Zenit manager Luciano Spal-letti said.

"My players showed reallygood skill. They showed a lot ofheart to win the match in sucha grave situation. Howeverthey did exactly what we decid-ed to do ahead of the match. We won deservedly tonight."

The visitors manager JorgeJesus meanwhile said he wasupset with the result but wasexpecting an even tougher bat-tle in the second leg.

"It was really tough to play

here," he said. "We allowedZenit to score three goals, thatmeans we defended poorly thisevening. It's a pity. "But noth-ing is finished yet. The place inthe next round will be decidedin the return match. I think itwill be even more tough."

The hosts, who came intothe match lacking a competi-tive edge because the Russianleague is on a winter break,

coped well enough withoutseveral key players but still fellbehind in the 20th minute.

Uruguayan star Pereirapounced after Zhevnov, stand-ing in for injured first choiceVyacheslav Malafeyev, failed tohold Cardozo's freekick.

Benfica 'keeper Artur cameto the visitors rescue in the22nd minute as he saved wellfrom Alexander Kerzhakov's

shot from inside the area. However he was unable to

prevent Shirokov's equaliser inthe 27th minute when theRussian international mid-fielder scored with a sweetright-footed volley from TomasHubocan's cross from the left.

Both teams had morechances to get the upper handbefore the break with Benfica'sformer Argentinian interna-tional midfielder Pablo Aimartesting Zhevnov with a low ef-fort from 20-metres out.

Both sides got mired in amidfield battle in the earlystages of the second-half withthe first clear chance falling toZenit substitute Vladimir By-strov in the 68th minute but hemissed the target with a close-range sharp-angled shot.

Semak, though, gave thehosts the lead for the first time19 minutes from the final whis-tle with a delightful backheelfrom Bystrov's cross.

The visitors poured forwardand were rewarded when Car-dozo equalised with three min-utes remaining but Shirokovreplied immediately with thewinner, tapping home after adefensive mix-up. AFP

Singer Seal seems to have finally acceptedthat his marriage with Heidi Klum has end-ed. He has been spotted without his wedding

ring for the first time. After the split last month,Seal appeared on a TV show, and said he had “nointention” of removing the wedding band be-cause “it’s a token of how I feel about this woman”.

“It feels really comfortable on my hand.” But now the ring is gone. On his arrival in Australia,Seal was spotted with bright yellow nail polish on his fingers, which drew even more attention to the fact he was without his wedding ring. Seal and Heidi were married for seven years. IANS

Just think of the view infront of you as you sit onthe balcony of this restau-rant and you will forget about the rest of the sur-

roundings. To be honest I wouldn’t have

gone up there on my own if itwasn’t for my northern friendswho told me this restaurant hasexcellent fresh crab on themenu.

It is a family-run Chineserestaurant where on the week-ends the children are aroundhappily playing and there are noformalities at all. There was ahuge selection on the menu andthere is no pork at all in therestaurant.

Seafood is the specialty sinceit’s located close to the sea! Some of the starter delicaciesinclude octopus salad andcrispy squid. The squid wasnice, crispy and not too greasy.

A variety of individual bowlsof soup gives everyone a choice, from hot and sour soup to a gin-ger and vegetable based soup.

For our mains we orderedsweet and sour fish, sweet andsour chicken, sizzling lamb, steam whole fresh fish, crabsautéed with ginger and springonions, hotpot of tofu and to ac-company it all, a huge plate offried rice.

All the dishes were fresh andhad plenty of sauce.

The crabs on this day were allyoung male crabs and the fleshwas soft and meaty. The fish wasfresh from the sea and so flavor-ful with ocean freshness to itand a light delicate taste.

My least favorite dish on thatday was the lamb — it was toopungent for my liking.

The service was good and theowner-chef was there to help uschoose and guide us throughwhat was brought in that morn-ing. If we had more room in ourtummies I’d have ordered the fatlobster, which still looked alive.

They can cook it anyway you like. I personally like mine steamed with some gingerand garlic.

Shah Rukh Khan, who wasappreciated for the role of adoomed lover in 2002 re-make of ‘Devdas’, earlier

played by Dilip Kumar in the 1955film of the same name, feels no-body can imitate the thespian.

“You can’t imitate Mr Dilip Ku-mar.Whoever copies Dilip Kumar, they are idiots like me,” said ShahRukh.

Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dev-das’ was treated differently by San-jay Leela Bhansali, who gave it alarger than life feel and the mag-num opus had Madhuri Dixit andAishwarya Rai as Chandramukhiand Paro respectively. The film wonlots of awards.

After a decade of the film’s re-lease, Shah Rukh feels that it wasstupid of him to go ahead and do‘Devdas’, which is a big screenadaptation of Sharat ChandraChattopadhyay’s novel.

“I am not someone who wouldlike to do something which has

been so beautifully crafted. I have avery deep regard for the fact thatmy parents loved ‘Devdas’. I wasvery young and stupid that I saidyes and did it, but as I am gettingmature, hopefully more intelligent, and perhaps would not be able todo it this time,” the 46-year-oldsaid.

The superstar also feels hewould have never mustered thecourage to be part of ‘Devdas’ hadhe seen Dilip Kumar’s version.

“Had we seen the film beforemaking it, we would never havehad the guts to make it. Sanjay,Aishwarya and Madhuri weall felt that first we shouldfinish the film then weshould watch it,” he said.

It is said that so far thenovel has been madeinto films 15 times, in-cluding in languageslike Bengali, Telugu,Tamil, Urdu and As-samese. IANS

Vidya Balan, who has been on a success spreeafter her films ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and‘The Dirty Picture’, took a lot of time before

zeroing on to Sujoy Ghosh’s ‘Kahaani’.“Sujoy came to me with a script, which I didn’t

like. Then he said I will bring to you one idea afteranother till you like it. I thought he was just sayingit. But he actually came with a lot of ideas to meand I liked this one a lot and asked him to developit and that we will see. But till the time the scriptwas not complete, I didn’t say yes,” the 33-year-old

said while promoting ‘Kahaani’.Releasing March 9, ‘Kahaani’ tells the story

of a pregnant woman who comes to Kolkata insearch of her missing husband.

“He patiently waited for me and thankgod he did that because it has been a greatexperience. I have been associated withthis film in different capacities besidesacting. After ‘Parineeta’, this is the filmwith which I feel so associated — fromscripting to locations,” said Vidya. IANS

Amitabh Bachchan, who is re-cuperating from two recentabdominal surgeries, says

some new medical issues haveemerged, and it is likely that his stayat the Seven Hills Hospital here maybe further extended.

“I seek forgiveness... I will not bedetailing any more... some freshmedical issues have come up, and Ineed to concentrate on the treat-ment now,” the 69-year-old ailingactor posted on his blog on Wednes-day night.

The megastar was successfullyoperated upon Saturday, and wasdue to be discharged from the hospi-tal Monday. But following com-plaints of acute pain, doctors decid-ed to keep him under observation tillFriday or Saturday at least.

However, his blog update, whichwas unusually short and to-the-point, indicates his condition couldbe grave. So far, his health hasn’t de-terred him from blogging and tweet-ing for his “extended family”.

“Once you open Twitter, you justremain there...an obsession to readand know what others feel and say...To all those that communicate withme here, and wanting personal re-sponse... it is inconsiderate to askme in this condition...,” he added.

His abdominal problems are a re-sult of a near fatal injury he sufferedwhile shooting ‘Coolie’ in 1982. IANS

Give the meaning of the following words.

TODAY’S TEASER

The bee's knees is used to indicatesomething which is excellent or ofthe highest quality. 'Bee's knees'began to be used in early 20th cen-tury America. Initially, it was just anonsense expression that denotedsomething that didn't have anymeaningful existence - the kind ofthing that a naive apprentice wouldbe sent to the stores to ask for, like a'sky-hook' or 'striped paint'. Thatmeaning is apparent in a spoof re-port in the New Zealand newspaperThe West Coast Times in August1906, which listed the cargo carriedby the SS Zealandia as 'a quantityof post holes, 3 bags of treacle and7 cases of bees' knees'. The teasingwasn't restricted to the southernhemisphere. The US author ZaneGrey's 1909 story, The Shortstop, has a city slicker teasing a yokel byquestioning him about make-be-lieve farm products: "How's yerham trees? Wal, dog-gone me! Why,over in Indianer our ham trees issproutin' powerful. An' how aboutthe bee's knees? Got any bee'sknees this Spring?" The nonsenseexpression 'the bee's knees' wastaken up by the socialites of Roaring20s America and added to the list of'excellent' phrases. A printed refer-ence in that context appears in theOhio newspaper The Newark Advo-cate, April 1922, in a piece on newlycoined phrases entitles 'What DoesIt Mean?': "That's what you wonderwhen you hear a flapper chatter intypical flapper language. 'AppleKnocker,' for instance. And 'BeesKnees.' That's flapper talk. This lin-go will be explained in the woman'spage under the head of Flapper Dic-tionary." [an 'apple knocker' is arustic] It's not beyond the bounds ofpossibility that the expression be-came popular in reference to herand her very active knees, but 1924post dates the origin of the phrase.
