The Statement Disputed Hint Tlicy Are Lux in Any Particular. London Spectator. Lady Constance Lytton lays down two propositions which will be received, we think, by her sex with something of sur- prise. She says women, have no code of honor, and therefore when they are not dishonorable are more deserving of honor, because no external pressure compels them, but only their own goodness. Except on one rather restricted point, we may ven- ture to doubt whether either proposition is well founded. We fancy women are at least as honora- ble as men, and that they are kept honora- ble by a code at least as severe as that which presses upon the other sex. This Is certainly true, and Is, we fancy, admitted by Lady Constance; Lytton to be true, as legards the weightier matteps of the law. Upon their own esiecial ytolnt of honor women are admitted to be better than men, and they are kept so, not only by the teach- ing of ages and of religion, but by a code supported by both sexes which presses up- on them in many cases with even frightful severity. They are never forgiven by their own sex for a breach of their cardinal law, and the apparent forgiveness in occasional cases of the other is deeply llavored with contempt. If they yield again to tempta- tion which should be stronger with them than with men, the temptation to relieve nervous suffering by drink, they are de- nounced with a bitterness hardly expended on any vice, and almost inexplicable, except upon the theory that men always associate drink in women with unchastity a belief, which seems to have descended through all agea. The code in this case has been as rigid as iron, and except in the lower classes of the Northern races, it has done its work so perfectly that overindulgence In drinking may be said throughout the world, outside of Polynesia, to be a purely masculine vice. As regards all forms of pecuniary tempta- tion, except one, the writer would certainly say that women are greatly more honorable than men. It may be only an individual ex- perience, but he has found them much more reluctant to borrow; and when they have borrowed, much more rigid, though not. it is true, more punctual, in repaying. The trusteeship of two thousand years has, In fact, drilled them into an appreciation of the duty of paying, which the opposite sex can hardly be said to possess, the abso- lutely upright man usually displaying his uprightness by an abstinence even from re- quests for loans. The woman who is lax in pecuniary affairs is almost invariably without any principle at all. In this case, too, the code presses sharply, the woman who borrows and pays not again beipg held by her sisters to be an offender with whom it is safest to have as little Inter- course as possible. The single exception is gaming. The writer never knew a female gamester, but he cannot resist the uni- versal testimony that where she exists at all the woman who games Is less likely to pay up than the man; and that the opinion of her own sex. though it would not con- done her offense, would be far less hard than the judgment of men on men for the same delinquency. The woman. In fact, cannot be reasoned out of a conviction that a game is a game and nothing else, and that nonpayment tn rather a breach of so- cial conventions than of laws without which society could not continue to exist. She does not see, as a man does, the treachery involved in failing to pay a bet, and. therefore, regarding it as a trine, Is trivial in her judgment of its turpitude. In the great majority of grave cases, how- ever, women are at least as honorable as men, and help with all their hearts to maintain a much severer code. THE ELK AVAS'PLAYIXG 'POSSOI. He Surprised Hunter Jnmpx Gotirlcy, Who Started la to Skin Him. New York Sun. "An elk beats the devil for mischief," Faid James Gourley, at the Montana Ciub. "One time I was hunting on the Yellowstone river with Uncle Pete McDougall and a squaw man named JAckson, and every kind of game that you ever saw was found there. We shot no end of buffalo, deer and ante- lope, and thought the list complete when we struck a band of elk in the open valley. The squaw man said that the only way to kill an elk was to bury yourself In a clump of bushes and wait for him to come to you. I knew better, and so we herded up the gToup and tried to close In on them In a circle. Well, they all got away except one bull, who was cornered until I could get a shot at him. I was nattering myself that It was a great shot when 7. saw him fall flat on his side and never move a hair. " 'You know all about killing elk. I said, sarcasflc like, to the squaw man. " You killed him, you skin him ' he said. " 'All right,' said I. 'but you don't get any of the meat. And with that I out with my knife and walked quickly over to the dead elk. never noticing where he was hit. I got square over on his neck and was Just reaching with my knife to take the skin from his head when of all surprises I ever got that was the worst. That bull elk Just raised up In the air with me on his neck and tossing his head caught me squarely on his horns. I came down like a piece of lead ore in a thousand-foo- t shaft. I tried to hang on to his horns, but he jerked rnv grip away and threw me high in the a! and on the ground, where I lay with the breath knocked out of me anil too eared to move, and thinking that he would tram- ple me to death in the sage brush "Finally my friends got in their work The elk had so much fun that he did not see them coming, and Uncle Pete trjt a ball in his heart just as the beast was about to jumy on me with all four feet The elk tumbled over on me, and under his crushing weight 1 fainted. The next I re- membered was the smell of smu"-!- d Canadian whisky and the squaw man savin" with a laugh: "'It tikes a long time to learn an elk's ways "Like General Grant in the interview 'I had nothing to say on the subject.' " ' BMW A Real :ioy. Atchison Globe. We watched a little boy this morning who had taken ids pennies down town and I bought a candy h-a- rt for his sick mother. womex's corn: of honor. The Statement Disputed Hint Tlicy

Are Lux in Any Particular.London Spectator.

Lady Constance Lytton lays down twopropositions which will be received, wethink, by her sex with something of sur-prise. She says women, have no code ofhonor, and therefore when they are notdishonorable are more deserving of honor, because no external pressure compels them, but only their own goodness. Except onone rather restricted point, we may ven-ture to doubt whether either proposition iswell founded.

We fancy women are at least as honora-ble as men, and that they are kept honora-ble by a code at least as severe as thatwhich presses upon the other sex. This Iscertainly true, and Is, we fancy, admittedby Lady Constance; Lytton to be true, aslegards the weightier matteps of the law.Upon their own esiecial ytolnt of honorwomen are admitted to be better than men,and they are kept so, not only by the teach-ing of ages and of religion, but by a codesupported by both sexes which presses up-on them in many cases with even frightfulseverity. They are never forgiven by theirown sex for a breach of their cardinal law,and the apparent forgiveness in occasionalcases of the other is deeply llavored withcontempt. If they yield again to tempta-tion which should be stronger with themthan with men, the temptation to relievenervous suffering by drink, they are de-nounced with a bitterness hardly expendedon any vice, and almost inexplicable, exceptupon the theory that men always associatedrink in women with unchastity a belief, which seems to have descended through allagea. The code in this case has been asrigid as iron, and except in the lowerclasses of the Northern races, it has doneits work so perfectly that overindulgenceIn drinking may be said throughout theworld, outside of Polynesia, to be a purelymasculine vice.

As regards all forms of pecuniary tempta-tion, except one, the writer would certainlysay that women are greatly more honorablethan men. It may be only an individual ex-perience, but he has found them much morereluctant to borrow; and when they haveborrowed, much more rigid, though not. itis true, more punctual, in repaying. Thetrusteeship of two thousand years has, Infact, drilled them into an appreciation ofthe duty of paying, which the opposite sexcan hardly be said to possess, the abso-lutely upright man usually displaying hisuprightness by an abstinence even from re-quests for loans. The woman who is laxin pecuniary affairs is almost invariablywithout any principle at all. In this case, too, the code presses sharply, the womanwho borrows and pays not again beipgheld by her sisters to be an offender withwhom it is safest to have as little Inter-course as possible. The single exception isgaming. The writer never knew a femalegamester, but he cannot resist the uni-versal testimony that where she exists atall the woman who games Is less likely topay up than the man; and that the opinionof her own sex. though it would not con-done her offense, would be far less hardthan the judgment of men on men for thesame delinquency. The woman. In fact, cannot be reasoned out of a conviction thata game is a game and nothing else, andthat nonpayment tn rather a breach of so-cial conventions than of laws withoutwhich society could not continue to exist. She does not see, as a man does, thetreachery involved in failing to pay a bet, and. therefore, regarding it as a trine, Istrivial in her judgment of its turpitude. Inthe great majority of grave cases, how-ever, women are at least as honorable asmen, and help with all their hearts tomaintain a much severer code.

THE ELK AVAS'PLAYIXG 'POSSOI.He Surprised Hunter Jnmpx Gotirlcy,

Who Started la to Skin Him.New York Sun.

"An elk beats the devil for mischief," FaidJames Gourley, at the Montana Ciub. "Onetime I was hunting on the Yellowstoneriver with Uncle Pete McDougall and asquaw man named JAckson, and every kindof game that you ever saw was found there. We shot no end of buffalo, deer and ante-lope, and thought the list complete whenwe struck a band of elk in the open valley. The squaw man said that the only way tokill an elk was to bury yourself In a clumpof bushes and wait for him to come to you.I knew better, and so we herded up thegToup and tried to close In on them In acircle. Well, they all got away except onebull, who was cornered until I could get ashot at him. I was nattering myself that Itwas a great shot when 7. saw him fall flaton his side and never move a hair." 'You know all about killing elk. I said, sarcasflc like, to the squaw man.

" You killed him, you skin him ' he said." 'All right,' said I. 'but you don't getany of the meat. And with that I out withmy knife and walked quickly over to thedead elk. never noticing where he was hit.I got square over on his neck and was Justreaching with my knife to take the skinfrom his head when of all surprises I evergot that was the worst. That bull elk Justraised up In the air with me on his neckand tossing his head caught me squarelyon his horns. I came down like a piece oflead ore in a thousand-foo- t shaft. I triedto hang on to his horns, but he jerked rnvgrip away and threw me high in the a!and on the ground, where I lay with thebreath knocked out of me anil too earedto move, and thinking that he would tram-ple me to death in the sage brush"Finally my friends got in their workThe elk had so much fun that he did notsee them coming, and Uncle Pete trjt aball in his heart just as the beast wasabout to jumy on me with all four feetThe elk tumbled over on me, and under hiscrushing weight 1 fainted. The next I re-membered was the smell of smu"-!-dCanadian whisky and the squaw man savin"with a laugh:

"'It tikes a long time to learn an elk'sways"Like General Grant in the interview 'Ihad nothing to say on the subject.' " '
