It is that time of the year again. As I reflect over the past year, I am reminded of the great group of dedicated members we have here at 12-1. You all deserve commendation for your service. It seems that we were just planning the 3 day 175 mile PTSD trek. Thanks to you, 12-1 escorted the group through the majority of our AOR and coordinated with DNR for this joint venture. After a busy Summer, we participated in the Mass Evacuation Exercise in Charleston. That was a real world exercise. Members of 12-1 were well represented as usually is norm rather than the exception. All this was followed by the QE re-certification of our 2 coxswain and 2 of our crew members. Keep up the good work! The next year will be another exciting year. Looking forward there is much work to do. We cannot afford to rest on yesterday's accomplishments. Let us all strive to improve our skills. One way to start is to put the Mandated Training to your aft. Always positively promote the Auxiliary and be professional in our actions, speech and dress. Thank you to all of you and your families for the commitments you make. I am blessed to be a part of such a fine group of people. Bravo Zulu! Lake Marion is the largest lake in South Carolina (173.7 Sq. Mi./110,600 acres) (33rd in US), centrally located and with territory within five counties. The lake is referred to as SC’s Inland Sea. Combined with Lake Moultrie (60,000+ acres) and the upper Cooper River, Flotilla 12-1’s responsibility exceeds 250,000 acres (390+ square miles). We also patrol the Santee and Congaree Rivers.

FLOTILLA VICE COMMANDER VFC Bob Young

Winter is upon us (can't believe I'm really saying that here in SC), but it really is - and with it, all of the inherent hazards associated with cold weather boating. Here in SC, it is far too easy for a boater to wake up on a sunny, warm winter day, load up to go out for a day on the water, and forget the dangers the colder water presents to him and his/her passengers. We have all had cold water immersion training. Unfortunately, most others have not. If you know someone who

regularly goes boating in the winter, speak to them about the dangers of cold weather / cold water immersion and the critical importance of wearing their life jacket. It can make the difference between surviving and not surviving an unintentional dunk in the lake. Also remind them that with winter comes decreased boating activity on the lake, as a whole, and any necessary rescues or assistance can be long in coming. Bottom line - be prepared for cold weather, make sure you have a float plan, and wear your life jacket. Ω

Since last spring it has been the goal of the MT to have all coxswain and crew trained and ready for the recertification QE before the end of 2015. We started in April with an all-day on water training exercise reviewing towing, man overboard and anchoring with Festus Burchfield as our instructor. We continued our review of navigation, SAR’s and other crew and coxswain material at each flotilla meeting followed by another on water training patrol in late August. I am happy to report that all participating candidates passed with flying colors and have been re-certified.                 The QE was held on 14 November 2015, along with fine weather at my lake house on Wyboo, Lake Marion, SC. Richard Daniel and Allen James were the QE’s and did a great job confirming that all of our candidates met the standard requirements for their relative PQS. We first completed the navigation exercise and knot tying then broke for lunch at a nearby restaurant. After lunch we boarded our facilities and did our pre-underway checks and GAR under the watchful eye of the QE’s then began the various on water evolutions.                               In addition to the members of flotilla 12-1, we were joined in the recertification by Festus Burchfield who was re-certified as coxswain. Congratulations to all, Bob Young as crew, Joe Livingston, Festus Burchfield and Perry Moses as coxswain.                 The attached photo was taken during our lunch break. Ω

THE INLAND SEAOPERATIONS Joe Livingston, VCDR 12

On 14 November three members of your OPS Group successfully completed a mandatory QE to re-qualify for their respective specialties. Bob Young, VFC 12-1, re-qualified for Boat Crew; Perry Moses, FSO-MT, and Joe Livingston, VCDR 12(e), re-qualified for Coxswain. Joining us and also re-qualifying for Coxswain was Festus Burchfield, FC 12-3/District 7 Operations Officer and QE. Ron Cunningham served as radio watch stander for the event. Also assisting with the event as boat crewmen were William Hayes, FC 12-1, and Larry Odom; Al Crothers, IPDCDR 12, from Flotilla 12-3. This was a standard 3 year competency re-qualification QE that involved testing on a broad range of topics related to Boat Crew and Coxswain qualifications. Richard Daniel (Flotilla 12-8) QE, and Allen “Hap” James, DCDR(e) 12/QE, administered the testing which included both on-shore and on-water evolutions. The on-shore testing, which included chart work, and various navigation and seamanship questions, was conducted at Perry Moses’s lake house (Thank You Perry!), after which the whole group got underway for the on-water testing, which consisted of towing evolutions, man overboard drills, testing on proper anchoring, as well as successful set up and execution of a SAR pattern. The on water testing was done aboard Flotilla 12-1 facilities “Miss Ally” and “Reel Thrill”, and Flotilla 12-3 facility “Voyager”. As mentioned above, all involved completed the process successfully. Bravo Zulu to all!

On 5 December, your OPS Group mounted a MOM patrol on Lake Marion. Onboard your facility “Reel Thrill” were William Hayes, FC 12-1, Perry Moses, FSO-MT, and Joe Livingston, FSO-OP. On Shore standing radio watch at the flotilla trailer was Ron Cunningham, FSO-VE. It was COLD but still a great day to be on the water and the patrol was “OPS NORMAL”. Ω Semper Paratus!

    TAKING AUXILIARISTS SERIOUSLY

If Auxiliarists are to be taken seriously, they too should be inc luded in the p lann ing process. A primary goal is to

create an organizational climate in which their input is welcomed and respected, as each of us constitute a valued member of the Coast Guard and the Auxiliary. A receptive organizational climate is essential to the health of a unique program such as ours. As with paid employees, organizational commitment increases when we participate in decision making. Participation is no less meaningful to many Auxiliarists, to instill a sense of self-confidence and personal worth — attributes that enhance job satisfaction, self-confidence, and ultimately retention by the Auxiliary. From the organizational perspective, involving us in program planning and decision making is yet another way 'the top' can affirm their support for our program. It is also a highly practical means to assimilate into the Coast Guard the "volunteer intangible" — the special knowledge, insight, and caring that we can lend to them. Additionally, the inclusion of our organization in planning helps to al ign expectations regarding the relative work responsibilities of each party. In sum, our volunteer involvement provides the foundation for an organizational climate in which we are accepted as partners in service delivery, and our contributions are recognized and appreciated. FAREWELL As Sep may have told you, I will not be renewing this year. I understand one can retire after 15 years of service. Please let me know what actions need to be taken. I feel I can no longer meet the ever changing requirements as put out from the USCG. I will always look back at Flotilla 12-1 with a degree of pride. Along with help from the bridge (Jay) and all the folks who saw a need for the USCG AUX on Lake Marion we formed one. I say thank you. Richard A. Phillips, ATON 12-1

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Admiral Paul F. Zukunft, Commandant, presents to Mrs. Mary Pratt and Commodore Pratt plaques for 50 years of dedicated service. The presentation was at the National Commodore’s Banquet at NACON.

COMO Pratt is our ASC for SECTOR CHARLESTON. He and wife Mary joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary 8 September 1964. And, yes he did begin with a Safe Boating Course (with oars?).

Riddle: The man who made it doesn’t want it. The man who bought it doesn’t need it. The man who needs it doesn’t know it. ???

    MATERIALS /VESSEL EXAMINATIONS Ron Cunningham

VE This year has been hard on all of us. We won the District 7 award and subsequently lost a couple of examiners so we have dropped behind in total exams. Let’s stay vigilant on the water searching for those boaters who need our help to make them safer. Remember, just because they have been boating for many years and believe they have everything, doesn't mean that what they bought years ago has not expired or worn out. Let's continue to seek out boats to examine during the off season. MA We have plenty of printed material for the public to improve their safe boating practices. If anyone needs any of these materials, please contact me. Ω

DOUBLE SHEET BEND The double sheet bend is recommended for joining slick, thick or stiff ropes or lines. Doubling the turns makes the knot more resistant to slipping and provides extra holding power.

    A. & B. The double sheet bend begins the same as the single sheet bend with an open bight in the first line. Next, pass the end of the second line up through the loop and twice around the legs. The same caution about diagonal bitter ends (see single sheet bend) applies. When drawing up this knot, don’t simply pull the ends to tighten. Instead, carefully work out the slack in the turns before pulling the legs of the open bight tight as traction against the other working part. The finished knot. To make the knot relatively permanent, seize the legs of the open bight as well as the other working part to the other bitter end.

Definition of Diversity   The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.

It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences.  These can be along

the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,

political beliefs, or other ideologies.  It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing

environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond

simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. Ω

The land of no rivers – Saudi Arabia

Sounds a bit strange doesn’t it? For a country as big as Saudi Arabia there has to be at least some sort of flowing water. Well, there isn’t. Most of their fresh water comes from desalinization plants or underground reservoirs.
