Robin Frijns savoured his rst GP2 win lastweekend at Circuit de Catalunya, but hewas not the rst rookie to break his duck onthe Spanish track. It all started in 2005 withGianmaria Bruni winning the Feature Race forColoni whilst Jos Maria Lopez won the SprintRace for DAMS. In 2007, Ardens Bruno Senna

added his name to the list on his third ever

GP2 race. The following year, Alvaro Parente(Super Nova) and Kamui Kobayashi (DAMS)won on their maiden GP2 weekend. ArdensEdoardo Mortara did the same in 2009 SprintRace. Finally, in 2010 Charles Pic (Arden) andFabio Leimer (Ocean) claimed victory in theFeature and Sprint Races respectively (andrepeated the performance the following year).

You dont see them, but if youre ever in ourpaddock, youve heard of them. They arethe super-efcient, always smiling and hard-working catering crew who feeds and serves400 mouths twice a day from Thursday toSunday, rain or shine. We actually arrive atthe track on the Tuesday, explained HospitalityManager and legendary Christian Staurenghi. It takes a day to build the structure of 400m2.

Its a bit like playing Legos! The conditions arenot easy especially if it rains or if its too hot. Buttheres a good atmosphere among us. Werelike a family.

Once everything is set, the rest of the weekendcan unfold: We usually leave the hotel at6:30am. We have breakfast together at the trackand then we start cooking. We do everythingfrom scratch. We go grocery shopping twice aday. We work with fresh goods as much as wecan. Then we serve lunch. We have a 20m long

buffet that includes pasta, freshly-made pizza,

cooked meals, salads and then home-madepastries. Our tiramisu is pretty famous! It is.

Ask Karun Chandhok. Then we have to do thedishes and start cooking for dinner. We usuallyleave the track around 23:00 if were lucky!

Then comes Sunday: Its the toughest day.We start taking down the structure as much aswe can whilst still preparing lunch. We open therestaurant from 11:30 until 13:15. We leave t he

TV and some chairs for people to watch the F1race, but we dont have time to do that. We have

to pack everything up. If all goes well, weredone by 22:00, but sometimes, were not backat the hotel until 2am with barely the strength togo to bed!

People ask us who won the race and they laughat us when we tell them we dont know. But ourjob is not to follow whats happening on track.

It is to give the best food and the best serviceto our guests. Thats what makes us happy. Ifpeople tell us they loved our food, it feels likewe won the race! concluded Christian. Andjudging by the critics around the paddock, the

catering have not just won a race. They havewon the championship.

Bruno Senna laid down a marker to his rivalsin only his third GP2 start with a stormingdrive against the odds to claim his debut winin the series in Barcelona in 2007. With iSportmaking the running all weekend in the form oftitle challenger Timo Glock, who had set thepace in free practice and qualifying, it was abrave person who would bet against the Britishteam taking the win, although on Saturdaywhen wingman Andreas Zuber broke rst gearfrom the front row at the start it was a chink oflight for the rest of the grid.

When the race nally went live KarunChandhok clipped the grass and spun at therst corner and a three-wide collision into turntwo between Mike Conway, Giorgio Pantanoand points leader Luca Filippi also quicklydisposed of Antonio Pizzonia and XandiNegro too, prompting an immediate safetycar period to remove all of the broken vehicles.

Most of the eld came straight in at the end oflap two for their mandatory pitstop, althoughthere was no disguising the surprise up anddown the pitlane when race leader Glockcontinued past behind the safety car. Sennawas soon close behind thanks to a fastturnaround by his Arden team which saw theBrazilian emerge rst from the pitlane, handinghim an enormous advantage at a track wellknown to all of the teams thanks to off-seasontesting.

iSport clearly thought their pace would beenough to offset the tyre disadvantage ofstopping so early, and when the race wentlive it seemed that they had a point: Glockwas untouchable and built up a hefty lead, while behind him Senna put a solid gap oncountryman Lucas di Grassi and waited for

the Germans stop to shake out. When Glockeventually re-emerged in third place andquickly disposed of di Grassi on old tyres theArden pitwall held their collective breath, but ane drive on worn rubber saw Senna hold onto win from Glock by ve seconds despite ahuge tyre vibration for the Brazilian, who notedit was hard to see because of a at-spottedfront left for the second half of the race.

A strong start in the sprint race saw theBrazilian move up from eighth to third bythe end of the rst complex, although thiswas soon converted to P4 by a fast chargingGlock: the German quickly sliced his way bydi Grassi and Javi Villa for a long overduerst win of the season (and the championshiplead), while Senna re-opened the battle withhis countryman for the nal podium position.Di Grassi held on desperately to lead Sennaacross the line by a tenth, but it was the latterwho had the bigger smile after the race as heleft the circuit a race winner, and holding asurprising second place in the championshipso far.

Mercedes qualifying run continuedin Barcelona, where a great lap (or infact 2 great laps) in Q3 handed NicoRosberg another pole position, this timewith teammate Lewis Hamilton linedup beside him. The pair made plentyof comments after the session abouttheir likely struggle for race pace, butthe German did a solid job on a 3 stopstrategy to bring home P6: the Briton, however, atspotting his rst set, had aproblem with the lights on one of his 4stops, and limped home a disappointed12th.

Sergio Prez was also feeling goodafter out-qualifying his teammate for therst time to start in P8, but the race wasfar harder: struggling on a 4 stop race,he followed Button home in 9th place.Romain Grosjean was also looking fora strong performance after qualifying6th, just a tenth off his world championteammate, but a suspension failureundid all of the Frenchmans good work.

The Sauber looked a handful inqualifying, and Nico Hlkenberg wasprobably a bit miffed to fail to escapeQ2: the German knuckled down andwas in with a chance at some points, but an unsafe release penalty and theresultant extra pitstop pushed him downto P15 at the ag. Teammate EstebanGutirrez had a much better weekend:close to his teammate in qualifying(albeit affected by a grid penalty), heled an F1 race for the rst time andultimately missed his rst point by a fewtenths, and was delighted at the stepforward.

Unfortunately for Pastor Maldonado, there was to be no fairy tale nish inSpain after his popular win at the circuitlast year: the Venezuelan struggled inqualifying to P17, and while he improvedhis form in the race he still made vestops, including one for speeding in thepitlane, but pushed up to P14 by theend of the race.

Charles Pic won the Spanish round ofthe Caterham/Marussia war, althoughhe had to overcome being outqualiedby teammate Giedo van der Garde forthe rst time this year: the Frenchmanput in a great race performance for P17,while the Dutchman lost probably hisbest race of the season when his leftrear wasnt attached property in the pits, causing a DNF. In the other pit JulesBianchi qualied P20 and moved up2 spots despite tagging another car atthe start, while Max Chilton started andnished one spot behind his teammatedespite a slow rst stop.

    Last year, NewZ e a l a n d e rMitch Evanswon the GP3Series titleand with it a200,000 Euroscho la rsh ipfrom Pirelli tosupport a GP2campaign. We

caught up with him to nd out how hewas making the transition, and how theGP2 tyres compare with GP3.

Hw iffrnt r th GP2 tyr t th

    GP3 tyr?

mitch evn: Theres obviously moreperformance to be had out of the GP2tyres but the essential characteristics areactually very similar. I can see completelyhow you progress from GP3 to GP2 toFormula One with the same fundamentalqualities in the tyre, so its a very goodtraining ground.

Hw yu gt th bt ut f th

tyr?me: It varies a bit from track to track butBarcelona is obviously well-known forbeing aggressive on tyres so you have totreat them carefully. That means makingsure youre not too aggressive on yourout-lap so that they warm up properlyand being as gentle with the car as youcan: that tends to be the quickest wayanyway.

Theres more strategy involved inGP2 than GP3: how are you ndingtht pct?me: Its really interesting andeducational: we spend hours talkingabout it and going through the differentpermutations! In the end I think a lot of itjust comes down to experience and whatyour feeling is, although we do run a lot ofsimulations to see what the theoreticallyquickest way is. That doesnt alwaysmatch up to the reality though as thereare so many variables.

From a tyre perspective, how much GP3 prpr yu fr GP2?

me: It was always good preparation

before but its even better now with thenew car, which has really brought theperformance of the car much closer toGP2. That obviously reects on the tyresas well. Knowing the circuits helps, butthe biggest jump is that you have tofactor in the strategy for GP2: it opensup a whole new set of possibilities.

Do you have to manage the tyres

differently in GP2 to GP3?me: Yes, its a bit different. You can pushharder in the GP2 feature race as youhave the pit stops so you can afford totake more performance out of the tyres. In GP3, its more about managing oneset of tyres over a race distance, a bitlike the GP2 sprint race, so sometimesyoure not going quite as hard.

In the F1 race GP3 champion Esteban Gutirrezhad his best weekend of his rookie year: inqualifying he easily pushed into Q2, and led a F1race for the rst time courtesy of a long rst stint. The Mexican narrowly missed out on his rstpoint and nished P11, but laid down a markerfor his rivals by setting his maiden fastest lapof the race. Valtteri Bottas had a comparativelyquiet weekend, qualifying in 17th and nishingthe race in P16 after keeping out of trouble.

Stefano Colettis strong win in the sprint racewas enough to stretch his points lead in thechampionship after fourth in the feature.

Alexander Rossi and Kevin Ceccon spent much

of the weekend together, the American led his

Italian rival home P7 to P8 on Saturday, with

both men moving up a position each the next

morning, whilst Mitch Evans failed to score after

a positive start to his GP2 campaign.

Daniel Abt had a strong run in the sprint despite

a chaotic penultimate lap, nishing 8th, whilst

Tom Dillmanns weekend was a case of what

if: almost on the podium before running slightly

deep on the closing laps, and falling back to P6

    at the ag.

Koiranen GPNew to the Series and a one-twonish in only their second race, what a start! It could have beenbetter without a grid penalty forKevin Korjus as he had gonequickest in his very rst GP3

    qualifying session.

Nick YellolyThe weekend started so well forthe Brit with a strong fourth place

    CONORDALY

Alexander Rossi could have been forgivenfor thinking that his Barcelona weekend wasa write-off after a spin in damp but dryingconditions saw the American line up in a lowly28th position after a disastrous qualifyingsession, but luckily for the spectators atthe fabled Spanish circuit Rossi is made ofsterner stuff, with his race efforts an earlydemonstration of the sheer raceability of thecars in the new series.

Pl Varhaug out himself into the record books

as the rst ever GP3 winner, surviving a racelong battle in the feature event from RobertWickens and Esteban Gutirrez to do so, butmost eyes in the pitlane were on the endlesslyprogressing ART car of Rossi, who deed

those who claim that Barcelona is not an

overtaking circuit with a smooth but aggressive

drive through the eld to nish in P8, picking up

the rst ever reverse grid pole in the process.

When the lights went out Rossi tore away

from his rivals, staying well ahead of everyone

as Jean-Eric Vergne caused a safety car-

    prompting collision between Varhaug and

Mirko Bortolotti. And his restart was just as

sharp: Lucas Foresti was unable to stay with

the American as he sailed off to the chequeredag, instead watching his mirrors as Gutierrez

and Wickens piled on the pressure behind, with

the American claiming the point for fastest lap

just to reinforce his speed all weekend.

Blue is my favourite colourso thats the main design.

I like the glittery effectsagainst the matt base as thatlooks cool. I have a lucky girlon the top of my helmet itsa silhouette and she is there

    to bring me luck.

The back of my helmet saysAdderly Pete Fong as Iused to crash a lot so myteam revised the famous

Pete Tong expression withmy surname. I also have

Victoria Harbour, Hong Kongwithin the design andboth the Chinese and

    Hong Kong ags.

I have changed it to purplethis season to match the newcar livery and sponsor. I havethe Union Jack in grey withmy name in fading text andthe white bands at the frontwhich look cool. Its a big

change from my old red andgreen helmet.
