CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) is the process of continuing to learn throughout your professional career in order to
o keep up with advancing technologies
o develop skills and knowledge needed to stay effective
o ensure competence to practice
o achieve your true potential
The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka has been providing CPD
programmes for engineers and other professionals interested in their
career and personal development over many years. The programmes are
conducted mostly at weekends, so that the participants can attend the
lectures and other activities without disrupting their normal duties.
There are programmes available in specific subject areas as well as
important common topics such as management, communication skill
development, professional ethics etc.
The resource persons for CPD programmes are carefully selected from the
best available in the country, and the feedback from the participants is
used to continually improve the programmes over the years.
The programmes are conducted under the guidance of the CPD
Committee, which is one of the Standing Committees of the IESL chaired
by the President Elect or a Vice President, and executed by the Education
Division of the IESL secretariat.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR AN ENGINEER TO FOLLOW CPD PROGRAMS?
Engineering knowledge today has a very short Half – life Life-long Learning is needed to keep your knowledge and skills up-
to-date CPD programs provide you an opportunity to update yourself and
learn new things and focus on areas relevant to your current needs It also gives you an opportunity to meet and interact with engineers
and other professionals with a common interest, and form networks with them, which will help in furthering your professional career.
It helps cultivate the learning-to-learn ability, which is a very important skill in career advancement
CPD is a requirement for obtaining your charter and maintaining your Professional Engineer (PEng) status. It will also be a requirement for maintaining your Chartered Engineer (CEng) status too.
When the engineers keep themselves updated with the current knowledge and advances in technology, as well as improve their communication and other soft skills, it leads to the improvement of the professional practices and elevation of the image of the engineer in society.
