Richard S. Leghorn Collection

The Richard S. Leghorn collection is organized into four series: Personal Papers, Military Career, Boston University Optical Research Laboratory/ITEK, and Post-ITEK/ Advisory Work.

I. Personal Papers: covering the years 1938-2004, this series includes manuscripts such as Leghorn's MIT thesis "The Structure of Silica Gel by X-ray Diffraction Methods" (1939); files assembled during his employment with Eastman Kodak; correspondence with family, friends, and professional associates; journals, magazines, and clippings regarding Leghorn or pertaining to projects, developments or policies with which he was directly involved; photographs, audio, videos, memorabilia, and legal materials complete the series.

II. Military Career: covering the years 1942-1958 and separated between Leghorn's military service in WWII and the Korean War. This series includes files, reports, correspondence, photographs, memorabilia, audio, video and manuscripts. Topics include Leghorn's service records, Wright's Field, the D-Day invasion, combat, U.S. military deterrence, atomic energy, nuclear bomb tests on Bikini Atoll, U.S. Air Force, 30th Reconnaissance Squadron, 16th Photo Tech Unit, U.S. foreign and military policy.

III. Boston University Optical Research Laboratory/ ITEK Corporation (see also BUORL collection): covering the years 1947-1999 these files are devoted to the purchasing of BUORL and the creation of ITEK, development of military cameras, Corona spy satellite program and other projects, Open Skies program, arms control and disarmament, U.S. nuclear air force capabilities, U.S. foreign policy, biological weapons, Pugwash Conference of 1957, Eastman Kodak, U.S. military and civilian satellites, U-2 spy plane, and U.S. policy of detente.

IV. Post-ITEK/ Advisory Work: covering the years 1952-2008, the files, manuscripts, correspondence, oral histories, audio, video, memorabilia, articles, meeting minutes and reports pertaining to the RAND Corps., Open Skies program, arms control and disarmament, national security, D-Day/WWII anniversary, and the Iraq War (1991).
