Letter from the President

We have just ended another season where wewere treated to only the best from our hostmembers throughout the country.

Thank you to those of you who organised eventsthis year in a variety of places throughoutIreland – Youghal, Bandon, Bray, Stradbally,Dungourney, Waterville, Portlaoise, Galway and

Adare. Thank you to all touring members for showing consideration to other trafficusers and driving your cars in our customary courteous and safe manner.

The event with the most innovation surely must be the Upholstery Training Course heldat Adare Machinery in mid October where Elizabeth and Joe travelled from MinnesotaUSA to be among us for a week to show us how to fit Upholstery and Tops to ourTouring cars.

Now that our cars are laid up for the winter this is a good time to carry out scheduledmaintenance. The dark days of winter can be enjoyable and productive!

Kind regards

In total we covered about 3500 miles in 3 1/2 weeks,we had no real problems, a bit of boiling and coils, 2 punctures in 14000 miles of Tdriving...lucky ! I had the privilege of attending your upholstery weekend and I have to tellyou that it was of great help to me. SirHere are two pictures that I had copied, hopefully the background below of the McNallyfamily will add to the picture. Email any questions you have for clarification. I thank youfor your interest.

The McNally family lived on Main Street in Arva,Cavan. They operated a shop, a post office, and on a market day .... a tea room. GartyLough was behind their shop/home. PatrickMcNally had been a stone mason in the area.Bridget O'Rourke McNally ran the businesswhen her husband died. After theypurchased the Model T my father, Francis(Frank) McNally, became a chauffeur todeliver goods from the shop and drive

pilgrims to Knock and other places in Ireland. TheModel T also was used to transport victims of thetroubles during that time (1918-1921).The family is pictured here: my grandmother Bridget, her daughters, Anne and Bridget Agnes, my fatherFrank, and an unknown friend is driving. The otherpicture shows my father driving. The family had toleave Arva in 1921. They settled in Brooklyn, NewYork. My uncle John Joseph (Jack) McNally joined his

SirWe made it home safe and sound; flew out of New York with a fall/winter storm nippingat our heels. Can you believe our plane had to be de-iced before take off! I just wantedto share a scribble of reflection jotted down as we flew home: An Irishman can appearvery serious, well put together, bordering on a bit stuffy; But, this is an attempt to coverup the celebration of life that is always threatening to burst out of him. It can be spottedin the spring in his step, the glimmer in his eye, or the ‘Bugs Bunny’ characterembroidered on his socks. The Irishmen that Ihave met are fiercely protective of theirindependence, and conform only out ofnecessity; Each would speak their own languageif he could, and they will only claim to sound likethose in their immediate community. I havegathered from conversation that this desire tobe an individual; free of any dominating force, comes from the hundreds of years of beingpursued by others, and having to live on thedefence for generation after generation. Having had a visit from the Queen of Englandand a sense of her acknowledgement of their standing as a country ~out of her reach; itnow appears that Ireland will experience its first sigh of relief and enjoy a peacefultime. Hold your head high Irishmen and let celebration burst from within! GOD ISGOOD! Joe and I enjoyed every minute with each of you!Elizabeth Estepp - 763-439-4441Minnesota USA1-November-2011

Youghal RunSunday the 22

ndof May was forecast to be a day of bright spells and occasional showers. And

so it was. Sixteen Model T Ford cars from the ranks of the Irish Model T Ford Club, alongwith their drivers and crews, foregathered on the outskirtsof Youghal, overlooking the River Blackwater for morningcoffee and light refreshments. We set off around 11:00 amand headed northwards for Villierstown via Clashmore, where we stopped to allow the post mass goers anopportunity to admire our convoy of cars and commercialsdating from 1909 up to 1927, practically spanning theeighteen years of manufacture by Ford. We continued our

journey as far as Cappoquin, before heading over the Vee to Clogheen where our lunch stopwas at The Old Convent Restaurant. The group of forty or so were treated to a Sundaylunch truly fit for royalty. Our host Tim Crowley, in his after dinner remarkscommented that our run traversed the threecounties of Cork, Waterford and Tipperary and wehad members from five counties namely Cork,Laois, Wicklow, Waterford and Limerick; surely weare a National Club! Our return trip encompasseda drive back over the Vee and on to Lismore, ending back in Youghal in plenty of time for all toget home safely in daylight. Club President RobertClarke thanked our hosts and members forparticipating in the event and making the day so enjoyable.

West Cork RunIn what has become something of a tradition on T runs we all met up in Bob Clarke's BandonMotors on Sunday 19

thJune for morning coffee, tea

, scones and other goodies before setting off toenjoy the unique place on earth that is West Cork.Around 15 Ts lined up, some of the hardier soulshaving driven from Cork. We were joined byChairman of Ford Ireland Eddie Murphy and hiswife Sheila before heading to our first stop whichwas the pretty village of Kilbrittain where weviewed the huge whale on display. This whale wasthe subject of much discussion when in waswashed up on a local beach in the recent past. It was then off on a coastal journey in glorious

After a delicious lunch, we set off again, this timeto picturesque Glandore, which was packed withvisitors who were surprised and delighted at thearrival of so many lovely old cars. Suitablyrefreshed, we were homeward bound throughBallinascarthy for our annual photo ( anothertradition!) with the stainless steel replica of the carthat put the world on wheels.....Henry Ford'sModel T!!!!!On our return to Bandon we were greeted with

more tea, coffee and sandwiches to ensure we were not to expire with hunger beforegetting home!A huge thank you to Bob and Catherine Clarke for yet another wonderful run. A special wordof thanks to Sean Clarke for the excellent route map and instructions, a vital part of any trip.We look forward already to 2012!!!!

We will be back!!!

Stradbally 2011We made our way to Co Laois on Sunday 31st July to the annual steam rally at Stradbally. The center piece for us was the half acre manicured lawn set up by John Hendy and Paul

Murphy right in the centre of the Estate and cheekby jowl with the main arena. Having set up ourhospitality facility with freshly made sandwichesand cakes, we were all set to meet and greet ourarriving members together with their wellpresented Model T Ford cars and commercials. Themodels exhibited dated from 1909 to 1927, theactual years of manufacture, and the 31 vehicles ofdifferent variants and colours were much admiredby the many visitors. Members were on hand toanswer questions on the providence, history and

mechanical details of our vehicles. There were members present with single, multiple and noentries in an atmosphere charged with social content. After lunch we were detailed to drivein convoy and carry special passengers from thevillage to the show grounds. These were the 25gorgeous entrants for the Queen of Steam contestwho were chauffeured by proud owners right intothe main arena in the midst of delighted onlookers. Two lines of Model T Fords and one line of SteamEngines made for a sight not witnessed for many aday especially when the name of the winner wasannounced. The horns and whistles blastedcongratulations and the whole arena turned to grey

Dungourney RunSunday the 21st of August 2011 was the day of the Dungourney run hosted by Michaeland Joan Rigney. We assembled at 10:30 am at the Rigney residence where we saw theirvast display of old Ford cars and commercials dated from 1911 to the late 1980's. Thenwe had tea and scones before we set off for a scenic run in the sunshine to Whitegate tothe Oil Refinery in our Model T's. When we arrived there a bus was waiting to give us aguided tour of the refinery which was fascinating and very educational. We were thentaken to the canteen for refreshments. Afterwards everybody chatted and looked at theT's and took photos in the sunshine. We then proceeded to Shangarry via Cloyne and, Ballycotton to the Kilkenny designcenter, where the ladies had a very enjoyablehalf an hour of shopping and the men continuedtheir T talk! We headed back to Dungourneytaking in the lovely beach at Garryvoe. When wearrived back at the Rigneys Grainne had a feast fitfor a king waiting for us which was absolutelydelicious thank you Grainne. Afterwards wewere treated to set-dancing by our hostess Joanand her friends; we had lots of music anddancing. Everybody was in very high spirits as itwas an exceptionally wonderful day. Thanks to the Rigney family. (Text supplied byGrace Ryan 17)

First Charlie Chaplin Film Festival. The Charlie Chaplin Film Festival was held in Waterville Co. Kerry from Thursday the25th to Sunday the 28th of August 2011, to honor their most famous holiday maker. Our Model T club members were invited to partake in the festivities. Some of themembers arrived on Thursday afternoon and they enjoyed a visit to the famous ValentiaIsland in their Model T's.On Friday my family and I arrived at Waterville. We booked into the Waterville LakeHotel where many of our friends were staying. Others stayed at the Bayview Hotelwhich is situated in the center of the village where the main festivities took place. Weheaded to the village for a meal and dined in An Corcan there we met William and

Valerie Cuddy and their three lovely grandchildren Doireann, Eile-Mai and Conall. There was a great buzz around the village, and we enjoyed the festive atmosphere.

The following morning we all headed intoWaterville in our Model T's, some of us dressedvintage style. Vinny Kelly dressed up for theoccasion and was a very convincing CharlieChaplin lookalike, and he attracted lots ofattention throughout the day. There were lots ofphotos taken and I feel we really replicated theCharlie Chaplin era. The festival committee hada good variety of different itineraries, ours was ascenic drive taking in part of the ring of Kerry.

As my parents have a Roadster my good friend William Cuddy offered me a lift in hisModel T Fordor.I enjoyed the company of Valerie, and their three

grandchildren for the day. We headed out of the villagetowards Caherdaniel taking in the most breathtaking viewsin Kerry, and went to the beach in Derrynane, where anhistorian took us across the beach to a little old graveyardwhere we saw amongst others the graves of Daniel OConnell's familyhe himself the Catholic Emancipator''.We then proceeded to the house of Daniel O Connell andgiven a guided tour around his house which was fascinating. We even saw his little chapel and his extra large chariot on which he was horse drawnthrough the streets of Dublin. We then had lunch at the cafe situated at the ground and,

sat and chatted for a while in the mid day sunshine. The next part of the itinerary was to head to Sneem. Onthe way we noticed the magnificent beach at Derrynaneand allowed the three under 7’s to splash around on thewarm sand and the ebbing tide. We all had a good weekend. Congratulations to the people of Waterville fortaking the initiative in organizing the first Charlie ChaplinFilm Festival. The lineup of ten Model T Ford Cars plusdrivers and co-drivers all dressed up in costume of theera made for enhancing the atmosphere to make it atruly enjoyable week end for T’ers, visitors and localsalike. I hope that we will be back in 2012. (Text byGrace Ryan 17)

Autumn RallyOur Autum run, held on 2

ndOctober, based at The Maldron Hotel in Portlaoise was the

hub where owners of 15 splendid vehicles of varied colours and shapes foregathered inmisty grey clouded conditions in anticipation ofclear skies and sunshine. This was the setting atthe start of our run as we headed off at noon onthe first leg of 30kms passing through thevillages of Stradbally, Vicarstown andMonasterevin . After about one hour of travelour first stop was for an early Sunday lunch atthe Gandon Inn where to our surprise therewere as many Vespa Scooters parked up asModel Ts. To the naked eye all the bikes and cars

looked the same; but there the similarity ended! The scooters were of different coloursand body styles and were adorned with an array of chromed extras to create an imprintof individualisation. So too with the Model Ts. The variants ranged from the regalclosed-in Fordor to the ordinary canvas topped Touring cars and in the commercialsection from enclosed delivery vans to theordinary working pick-ups.The age range of our cars was from 1909 to 1927spanning the actual production run years. Afterlunch we set off again, this time in clear sunshineand blue skies on the second leg of another30kms at arrive at Cathole Falls & Picnic area. The Owenass River rises in the Slieve Bloommountains on Cappa Ridghe and passes throughCathole Falls and Barkmills before advancingthrough Mountmellick to join the River Barrow at the Borness. Because of its beautifullocation, Ballyhupauhaun is situated in an area where there are many beautiful walksnearby. Most of the area is covered in forest. Our 30 minute stop at Cathole Fallsallowed for relaxation and chat as well as a group photograph for the record. Wecompleted the last 15km of our journey arriving back at base at 5:00 pm to giveeveryone time to get home in natural daylight. Our sincere thanks to Sean McEvoy for leading us and sourcing the route, and stops andmaps. We will return to Co. Laois!

Upholstery training courseOn the week end of 22nd October 2011, 35 members assembled at Adare Machinery to

welcome Elizabeth Estepp and Joe fromMinnesota USA our tutors who came to Irelandfor a few days as our guests to assist in theinstallation of upholstery and top kits on fourModel T Ford Touring cars, one brass era 1915and three black radiator cars 1923 and 1924.having setup in the garage showroom with

tables and air tools, Elizabeth after introductionsquickly divided the attendees into three groupsof ten operatives/students tasked with the

fitting of seat covers on sprung frames, placing and fixing the rear cushion springs andpadded upholstery material and the wrapping of textile fabric along the length of eachset of four bows. The next stage of the process was the fitting ofthe top irons where the positioning of the strapsconnecting the clothed wood bows was crucial, making sure that the hood iron set would openand close with ease. Patience and accuracytogether with many helping hands achieved thiselement on three cars without any difficultywhatsoever.Next the placing of the top material comprising

cushions that were laid length ways on eitherside, the fitting of the rear screen and finally the top itself. Each part was laid outcarefully, measured for alignment and stapled into position culminating in a finishedproduct that each of the four 35 students can be proud of not least to mention the fourT owners who now have their cars fully furnished at a "better than new" standard.

Happily it was not all work and no play. Davidand Marian Cuddy were our hosts and theyprovided sustinance for the team over the weekend. Apart from morning coffee and afternoontea, we were treated to a full mid day dinner onSaturday and Sunday, making sure that theworkers could "march on their stomachs". For afew days thereafter, Elizabeth and Joe wereentertained in Cork. Joan Rigney brought themto Co. Kerry where a wool cloth manufacturer

engaged in dialogue with a promise of valuable Irish exports to USA. Aidan Rigneybrought our special guests to Dublin for a day tour of the Capital city, visits to museumsto whet the appetite for textiles of our American friends. The Irish Model T Ford Clubare most grateful to our special guests for taking up our invitation to be amongst us.We promised them that the Irish experience for them would be enjoyable and they in

turn would do their best to make the tutorial productive and educational. Truly on bothcounts the end result was positive. We have invited Elizabeth and Joe back to Ireland.they responded "is feidir linn" and will return with their three grown up children and

give them an opportunity to sample the Irish experience they so much enjoyed. Finally,a most gracious thank you to our members for your support and friendship in makingthis event such a success and worthy of repetition.

Snippet from Australia! In regards to the Peking to Paris race, I have been lucky enough to partake in this event[1918 Buick 3rd in class 2010 ] and yes it is quite a trip both physically and mentally. Asyou mentioned a well prepared T should do the trip as well as any other car. One didattempt it in 2007 but in my opinion was not prepared enough and only lasted a fewdays. That is why I am at present getting one together. The only problem this timeround is that there is no Pioneer class, so I had to get permission to take a Model T asthey now require you to be able to cruise at 50/55mph on good roads. Does not soundimpossible but you should see some of the roads. Once I have started assembly afterChristmas I will keep you updated.Nicholas Bailey7-November 2011
