I took the opportunity to interview the Maidens, and with the wealth of information provided to me, I thought a little experiment is in order. So, instead of one interview. You get five. The Iron Maidens are an all-female tribute to the music and live spectacle of Iron Maiden. Each band member took the time to answer a few questions about life in a tribute band, how the band came together and what they set out to accomplish in music.

The first member in the hot seat is guitarist Sara "Mini Murray" Marsh.

What would you say is the band's "mission statement"?

"Our tagline: World's Only Female Tribute to Iron Maiden, only scratches the surface. I would have to say, 'raise the bar'."

What draws you to Iron Maiden's music?

"When I first started playing guitar, I had Iron Maiden pictures cut from Circus magazine covering my bedroom walls. The Rock Gods! I have always respected how their songwriting tells cool stories, and the dual melodic guitar harmonies are huge. I am a big fan of vibrato, and Bruce Dickinson's is one of the best."

What is more important in a tribute band, the perfect look or the perfect sound?

"The perfect sound definitely, but they do work hand in hand. Your image can be flawless but if you suck as a live band, what is the point? Vice versa, at least with tribute bands, you have to have something visual going on or people will start chanting 'Free Bird'."

How important are production values to your show?

"Over the years we have adapted our show to fit on any stage, anywhere, anyhow, anytime. Having a consistent show is important. Sometimes I have to camp out by my amp to let Eddie (Iron Maiden mascot) go by on a small stage. But he will be there!"

What is more difficult, performing in an original band or a tribute band?

"They are both demanding because any successful band works hard in all possible areas. A tribute band's parameters are already defined so the options are more or less mapped out for you."

What is more important, approval from the fans or from the original band?

"The fans definitely, because I am a huge fan as well."

  • What is your favorite song to perform? Why?

"I love playing "Die With Your Boots On" because it was one of the first Iron Maiden songs I ever learned. Just the title fuels my adrenal gland!"

What is your favorite city to perform in? Why?

"There is nothing like a New York crowd, probably one of the only cities that had more fun than us. We cannot wait to go back there, it has been too long."

What are your favorite non-Iron Maiden records?

    "Jeff Beck"

What is the most important part of a song?

    "The solo!"

What was the first album or song that was important to you?

"The Beach Boys - "In My Room". What great harmonies! Big band swing. My grandpa had me listen to all his records. I learned a lot about feel from those sessions.

What is the most common misconception about your band?

"That we suck because we can't write originals."

Why a rock band? Why specifically a a rock tribute band? Why not trade school or the peace corps?

"I am a musician that loves to play live, and that is what tribute bands do. Then the fun totally got me hooked, and I quit my teaching job to be a mock star.

    Leather or spandex? Why?

"Leather holds the smell of sweaty rock longer."

The Iron Maidens are an all-female tribute to the music and live spectacle of Iron Maiden. Each band member took the time to answer a few questions about life in a tribute band, how the band came together and what they set out to accomplish in music.

Linda "Nikki McBurrain" McDonald drums for a number of original and tribute acts. She shares a few of her thoughts on pounding the skins for the Iron Maidens.

    How was the band formed?

"Mostly through word-of-mouth. From my side, I was looking for a bass player for my original band at the time and scouted the bass player in a co-ed Maiden tribute. After talking, the tables were turned and I was asked to join the Maiden tribute, which was turning all-female. Sara (Marsh, guitarist) was already on board."

What would you say is the band's "mission statement"?

"Without a doubt, the mission of this project is to spread the love of and perform Iron Maiden's music."

What draws you to Iron Maiden's music?

"As a bass player, I'm drawn to music that has fun and challenging parts for bass so that's what drew me to Maiden initially."

What is more important in a tribute band, the perfect look or the perfect sound?

"In a good tribute band, the sound ALWAYS comes first, with the stage, clothing and signature moves of the members up next. It's about recreating the whole live show vibe of the original band."

How important are production values to your show?

"Very important, especially delivering the type of show that will match Iron Maiden's shows on a smaller stage. We have the devil, Grim Reaper, several Eddies and stage effects that will leave you in awe."

What is more difficult, performing in an original band or a tribute band?

"Well, performing in an original band allows you to express your own voice. People do not have a blueprint to compare your performance as they do with a tribute band. Tribute band audiences can be brutal if you don't perform or deliver the music properly, where you can't

  • deliver your own music wrong because it is your own."

What is more important, approval from the fans or from the original band?

"Approval from the fans. They are the ones who want to hear this music live and they are the ones who will come see you perform when the original band is not around to play their town. We would be lucky if the real Maiden had any interest in seeing us perform, though I do know they know of us and I think they know we are not misrepresenting their material or their band."

What songs get the best crowd reaction?

"Run to The Hills" is always a crowd pleaser, as is "The Trooper "and "Wasted Years". Lately we have been playing "Alexander the Great" and they seem to go wild for it considering the real Maiden has never performed that song live and the Maiden fans are hungry for that one live!

What is your favorite song to perform? Why?

""Phantom of the Opera" and "Revelations" because they are such classics and a roller coaster of an emotional ride."

What are your favorite non-Iron Maiden records?

"Aggression and vocal melodies and harmonies, guitar harmonies, and of course a slamming drummer doesn't ever hurt."

What was the first album or song that was important to you?

"Maiden Japan" was extremely important to me because it was the drumming on that album that made me decide to play the drums. Clive Burr is just on fire on that recording! In addition, "Fast as a Shark" by Accept really opened my eyes to the power of metal. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing the first time I heard that song."

What is the most common misconception about your band?

"That girls can't play Maiden, and that we are delicate little flowers of girls who can't hold our own."

    Leather or spandex? Why?

"Spandex for performing in - Have you ever sweat in leather? Blegh! Leather for non-performance wear is just fine and preferred."

Where can we find more info about the band or any other projects?

"www.theironmaidens.com will tell you all you care to know about The Iron Maidens. My other projects can be found at: www.myspace.com/lindamcdonald, www.phantomblue.com, www.myspace.com/thelittledolls , www.thelittledolls.com, www.myspace.com/valleydollsrock."

This is another part of a five part interview with the members of The Iron Maidens. More information on the band is available at the www.ironmaidens.com or www.myspace.com/theironmaidens.

The Iron Maidens are an all-female tribute to the music and live spectacle of Iron Maiden. Each band member took the time to answer a few questions about life in a tribute band, how the band came together and what they set out to accomplish in music.

Aja Kim lends her vocal talents to provide the voice of each era of Iron Maiden singers Bruce Dickinson, Paul DiAnno and that other guy. "Bruce 'Lee' Chickenson" shares a few of her thoughts on holding down the heavy end of the Iron Maidens.

    How was the band formed?

"In the petri dish of our minds..."

What draws you to Iron Maiden's music?

"There's something special about this music that affects me in ways I rarely feel in current music. It's very powerful music - with a depth to the lyrics and a beauty in the melodies that is unmatched by any other metal band, in my opinion."

What is more important in a tribute band, the perfect look or the perfect sound?

"Musicianship in this band has always been the top priority. Even though a great look is important as a tribute band, which will only get you so far. If you want people to keep coming back you have to bring more than just the right outfit and mannerisms to the table. In Iron Maiden's music that goes double. Iron Maidens fans are the most passionate music fans I've ever seen and we all feel a tremendous sense of obligation to be as musically accurate as humanly possible."

How important are production values to your show?

"Iron Maiden is known for its stage production so we can't just show up and play the songs. Our wonderful manager, Mark Dawson, has even figured out a way to pack the show up so that when we go on the road we bring the same level of production to every show."

Do you read your reviews? Do they mean anything to you?

"Since I am performing and singing music that is extremely important to the fans and most reviewers are fans, I do read them. It is so rare that a tribute band gets the kind of coverage we receive. that it is also quite fun. For the most part reviews are quite favorable, which is gratifying since we work so hard at what we do. Nevertheless, even if they are not it's a good learning tool. But at the end of the day it is really the opinion of the fans who come to our shows that mean the most to me and judging by the audience reaction we consistently

  • receive we're doing alright!."

What is more difficult, performing in an original band or a tribute band?

"Having done both I think it's definitely more difficult for an original band. A tribute band has the advantage of audiences already liking the music and not having the responsibility of actually creating it."

What is more important, approval from the fans or from the original band?

"Our fellow fans are the ones who plunk their hard earned dollars down to see our show so their opinion means everything to us. Without them, we could not do what we do. Of course, it's nice if the real band likes us, too!"

What songs get the best crowd reaction?

"The Trooper, Number of the Beast, Phantom of The Opera, Run to the Hills, and Wasted Years. These songs are staples in our show and if we didn't play them I think people would be terribly disappointed."

What is your favorite song to perform? Why?

"I hate narrowing it down to just one but if I had to choose for me it's Rime of the Ancient Mariner - I love the melody and the sheer epic proportions of it. Plus the whole crowd starts headbanging to it the minute we kick in with it- it's quite a sight to see!"

What is the most important part of a song?

"For me, as a singer, the lyric and melody are of paramount importance. But there really are no most important parts - every instrument and note counts."

What was the first album or song that was important to you?

"Tommy by the Who. That album was groundbreaking and so innovative for its time and the first thematic work of its kind from a rock band. It got me ready for Seventh Son of a Seventh Son."

What is more enjoyable? Playing by yourself for 2 hours or part of a package show where you get 30 minutes?

"Maiden's songs are so long that I'm barely warmed up in 30 minutes! Therefore, I enjoy a nice long set. To me it's like the difference between grabbing a sandwich and eating it in the car or sitting down to a 5-course meal. Both satisfy your hunger but I like to savor my meal."

What is the most common misconception about your band?

"That the only reason we've achieved what we've accomplished so far is because we're women. That may bring some people out to see us for the first time but what keeps them coming back is not our gender - it's that we deliver the goods to the highest level of our ability in that moment and the fans know the difference."

    Leather or spandex? Why?

    "Spandex - because I can."

The Iron Maidens are an all-female tribute to the music and live spectacle of Iron Maiden. Each band member took the time to answer a few questions about life in a tribute band, how the band came together and what they set out to accomplish in music.

Filling the shoes of Iron Maiden songwriter, bass player and mastermind, Steve Harris, Wanda Ortiz shares a few of her thoughts on holding down the heavy end of the Iron Maidens.

    How was the band formed?

"Everyone in the band had already known each other through playing in bands together or through friends and acquaintances. One day, one of us decided it would be fun to form an all-girl tribute to Iron Maiden and approached the rest of us. Coincidentally, Iron Maiden just happened to be a favorite band for all of us so we all thought it would be a lot of fun. The band was started out as just a fun project but after the first few gigs, we started getting calls from many clubs throughout the US. This project now keeps us pretty busy."

What draws you to Iron Maiden's music?

"As a bass player, I'm drawn to music that has fun and challenging parts for bass so that's what drew me to Maiden initially."

How important are production values to your show?

"Very important: since a lot of production goes into a real Maiden concert that is something that needs to be seriously considered if we are to be successful recreating their show."

Do you read your reviews? Do they mean anything to you?

"Yes, I've read most of them. They are helpful because they help the band gauge how it is doing."

What is more difficult, performing in an original band or a tribute band?

"It's hard to say that one is more difficult than another because they both have their own challenges. For instance, it is harder to get an original band off the ground because you have to start from scratch and build a following. A tribute band already has the following of the band they are playing tribute to, but there is a lot involved in getting costumes, songs, and the show "just right" The audience also tends to be less forgiving since they are already familiar with the way things are supposed to be done."

  • What is more important, approval from the fans or from the original band?

"It's important to have both. You need approval from the fans otherwise there is not much point in having the project to begin with unless you want to play for yourself in the garage. The original band can make things difficult for you to continue if they want so it's important that they're okay with what you're doing."

What songs get the best crowd reaction?

"The "oldies but goodies" like The Trooper, Phantom of the Opera, and Killers for example. The newer Maiden songs are really great but people like to reminisce and hearing a song from their past is like seeing an old friend that they haven't seen in a years"

What are your favorite non-Iron Maiden records?

"I have several. Here are a few of my rock favorites: Exit Stage Left/ Rush, Fragile/Yes, War of Words/Fight, Destroyer/ Kiss."

What was the first album or song that was important to you?

"The first rock album I ever bought was Kiss' first album when I was 11. I had heard about Kiss in school from other kids so I wanted to check them out too - that's when I started getting into rock music."

What is the most common misconception about your band?

"One common misconception is that you can't be fulfilled as a musician if you're not playing your own songs. People at Maidens' shows always ask me if I would be happier playing my own music and I do not really understand why. I have played in orchestras most of my life where I am always playing someone else's music and no one ever asks me that question after an orchestra concert. I love playing classical music: it is like reading a very good book. I feel the same way about playing Iron Maiden's music. I'm not sure why there are people who think you shouldn't play music you didn't write - what a sad place this would be if we couldn't hear Beethoven's or Mozart's music live anymore. Iron Maiden is still around but they can't play everywhere all the time so I think it's nice having tribute bands around that help fulfill the desire to hear and experience their music live."

    Leather or spandex? Why?

    "Leather because it lasts longer."

This is another part of a five-part interview with the members of The Iron Maidens.

Multiple guitars are a trademark of Iron Maiden's aural assault; guitarist Heather "Adrienne Smith" Baker shares a few of her thoughts on thrashing iconic metal riffs with the Iron Maidens.

What would you say is the band's "mission statement"?

    "Up the Irons, Baby!"

What draws you to Iron Maiden's music?

"I really enjoy Iron Maiden's choice of epic material from their lead harmonies to great vocal melodies."

What is more important in a tribute band, the perfect look or the perfect sound?

"In this case I definitely think that getting the sound is much more important due to the material having such a signature sound."

Do you read your reviews? Do they mean anything to you?

"I do read reviews to reflect back on the night as I compare notes with my own critique."

What is more important, approval from the fans or from the original band?

"The fans appreciate the music and act in a way that we direct out target audience. Yet we wouldn't be doing what we do if it wasn't for the wonderful longevity of Iron Maiden. I think both are an important element in what we do."

What is your favorite song to perform? Why?

"My favorite to perform is 'Phantom of the Opera'. It is such a landscape of sounds and dynamics thrown into an epic of a song."

What are your favorite non-Iron Maiden records?

Soilwork - Follow the Hollow, Air - Talkie Walkie, and Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll, at the moment.

  • What was the first album or song that was important to you?

"Boston's "Don't Look Back" was on of the first important songs to me."

What is the most common misconception about your band?

"The fact that we're females often puts a common misconception on us that we are unable to fill large MALE shoes. The truth is that we are not trying to fill anything, we just play it as it's written and have a great time doing it."

    Leather or spandex? Why?

"Spandex, for those who pull it off with flying colors."

Where can we find more info about the band or any other projects?

"My original project called The Afterlife at http://www.myspace.com/heatherbaker."

This is another part of a five-part interview with the members of The Iron Maidens. More information on the band is available at the www.ironmaidens.com or www.myspace.com/theironmaidens.
