How to Drive the Business ForwardHow do you motivate people at work? Some people think that if you pay people more they will work harder, but research shows that only works in certain types of work. On the latest series of Individual Development Programme (IDP) workshops, 62 IDP candidates watched a video by Daniel H. Pink (author of the New York Times Top 10 bestseller “Drive”) where he put the case for Intrinsic versus Extrinsic Motivation. Each delegate went away with a copy of Daniel’s book as well as learning about other more traditional theories of Motivation. The programme was designed and delivered by Senior Management Development Specialist Neil Porter and as usual there was plenty of activity with two videos and two experiential learning exercises. They started with Deadline 30 minutes where the teams had to correctly fill 12 pay packets within 30 minutes. We all know how frustrating it can be when we do not get paid correctly and Neil used the exercise to illustrate the point that “We all expect to get paid correctly and one time for the work we have done. When that does not happen and we have

to wait for another month to have the error corrected it becomes very demotivating. However if I get my pay, Bonus or Sadeem Credit that will not motivate me as it is what we have come to expect”Head of Career Development, Peter James Conway, added “The value of the programme is in getting the delegates to think of other ways to motivate people, like saying thank you, a hand written note, getting their picture on the Refinery Noticeboard or in the Islander or Weekly Star”One of the delegates, Faris Gabani, On Developmental Assignment with Technical & Business Support, Local Marketing added

“The latest workshop on motivation not only gave me new insight to take back to work, but also illustrated the positive practices already taking place at the office. It became clear to me and my fellow IDP candidates that we need to both continue with the motivational examples we already see, as well as introduce the great new methods we learned today.” The Motivation workshops will be run again in August and September and then in October, November and December there will be three two-day presentation skills workshops run by Neil Porter and Kishan Kumar from IT for 36 IDP delegates.

Learning & Development Department Delivers Team-building WorkshopDuring the Holy Month of Ramadan, Bapco’s Learning & Development Department worked with Manager – Operational Excellence Mark Hodgkinson and Leader – Lubricant Business Unit Emil Hayes to create two bespoke Team building workshops for their teams. The first took place at the Learning and Development Centre at the Refinery, on 13 July 2016 and was for the Lubricant Business Unit. The group of eight employees completed the MTa Learning exercise “Spinning your Web” in two teams, then completed the Belbin team role inventory. They then applied the skills they had learnt to work as one large group to complete the challenging “Rectangle” exercise. In the debrief that followed they used the video and photography to identify what went well and how they could work even better as a team. Mark Hodgkinson then identified some pitfalls of team work and how to overcome them linking the theory covered by Senior Management Development Specialist Neil Porter back to the workplace with Leader – Lubricants Business Unit, Emil Hayes. Commenting on this occasion, Emil said, “The Team Building Exercise was certainly of value to the LBU. We gained some new insight into the function of each

team member and we learned to trust one another within our roles to achieve the Team goal for the overall benefit of Bapco.” Mark added, “It would be great if more teams at Bapco took Team Work as seriously as the LBU team to improve their skills in a workshop like this. If this was the case then I feel sure Bapco would benefit as a whole. My team and I look forward to completing the workshop later in the year” The workshop was designed and delivered by Senior Management Development Specialist, Neil Porter who said “It is always great to use the MTa Learning exercises to help a team learn from their experiences in class and see how they can work together as a more productive team back at work.” For his part, Head of Career Development, Peter James Conway, commented “I look forward to seeing how well the LBU Team achieves the Critical Success Factors that were agreed with Emil before the programmes started. This will be the true indicator of whether the Learning experience my team provided met the Business need for the programme.” The next Team Workshop will be a much larger event in December with Mark and his newly enlarged Operational Excellence team.

Tips to Deal with the Summer Heat

How to Prevent Slips and Falls

Key IssuesDiscussed at

EHSC Meeting No. 91The Bapco EHS Committee held their monthly meeting in July 2016, and the following issues were discussed:

• Two Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) and one First Aid injury was recorded during June 2016. As a follow up from the brainstorming session held at the last EHSC meeting to improve our safety performance, an action plan is being formulated to ensure that all the necessary efforts are taken to prevent injuries to our workforce and contractors so that each one of us returns home to their loved ones safely every day.

• We celebrated the 90 days of the reliability clock without being reset on 14th June 2016. This is great news as reliability and safety go hand in hand. Well done to all and keep up the Good Work.

• 9 Process Safety Incidents were recorded during June 2016, out of which none were classified as Tier 1 or Tier 2.

• There was one road traffic accident during June 2016. This is a significant improvement from previous months. YTD there have been 37 vehicle accidents compared to 70 at the same time last year, although the trend is declining we need to continue with our efforts through defensive driving training and awareness to reduce these accidents.

• There were no unplanned flaring incidents during June 2016; however 8 planned flaring incidents due to essential maintenance related activities were recorded during June 2016. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) is currently at 4.5 vs. target of 7.0. This is mainly due to the unplanned flaring incidents and oil spills. It was re-iterated to improve our performance in this area.

• A presentation was made by the Chairman of the BOOST Steering Committee on observations related to kitchen and mess rooms since we had an LTI earlier this year related to a kitchen incident. The presentation highlighted that the majority of the observations related to body position and environmental conditions when using these facilities. A number of barriers related to these observations have already been removed; however the BOOST Steering Committee will continue with its efforts to remove the remaining barriers.

• A presentation was made on the Energy Management programme highlighting the progress to date, factors impacting the Energy Intensity Index (EII), key initiatives , opportunities and the road map from 2016-2020 to improve the energy efficiency. It was highlighted that events such as an emergency shutdown have a significant impact on the EII as well adverse environmental impact resulting from emissions due to flaring. It was highlighted that there is a strong correlation between reliability, energy efficiency, safety, and environmental performance. A reliable plant results in good performance across all these disciplines.

• It was highlighted that poor housekeeping is being observed across the site in particular car parks, fence line and the plant areas. It was emphasized that we all must take personal responsibility for good housekeeping in our areas. A review will be done on the current arrangements for cleaning and general waste disposal services in place and where deficiencies are identified appropriate measures will be taken to increase our focus in this area.

• Change your pattern of outdoor exercise to take advantage of cooler times, like early in the morning or late in the evening.

• Wear loose-fitting clothing, preferably of a light color.• Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-

conditioned house.• Try storing lotions or cosmetic toners in the refrigerator to use on hot,

overtired feet.• Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water.• Combat dehydration by drinking plenty of water, or drinks with

elelctrolytes.• Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these will promote dehydration.• Instead of hot foods, try lighter summer fare including frequent small

meals or snacks containing cold fruit or low fat dairy products. As an added benefit, you won›t have to cook next to a hot stove.

• If you don›t have air-conditioning, arrange to spend at least parts of the day in a shopping mall, public library, movie theater, or other public space that is cool. Many cities have cooling centers that are open to the public on sweltering days.

• If the heat is intolerable, stay indoors when you can and avoid activities in direct sunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces. Pay special attention to the elderly, infants, and anyone with a chronic illness, as they may dehydrate easily and be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Don›t forget that pets also need protection from dehydration and heat-related illnesses too.

Most people have at one time or other slipped, tripped or fallen. What happens without causing any injuries, we hardly give it a second thought. But even though slips and falls are common, they can still cause minor and in certain cases, serious injuries. Slips and falls are among the most common types of incidents at home and the number one cause of injuries at work. There are many precautions you can take to prevent slips and falls. Here are some safety suggestions. At Floor LevelA floor-level fall is usually not as dangerous as a fall from a height. Keep in mind that even though you might not suffer a serious injury when falling at floor level, the quick muscle action used to catch your balance may hurt your back or cause other strains or sprains. Here are some precautions to take to avoid slips or falls.• Keep areas well-lit. Look before you walk to make sure your path is clear.• Clear any clutter from walking areas. Keep walkways between furniture as wide as possible.• Keep drawers and cupboards closed and furniture in its accustomed place.• Wear supportive, well-fitting, low-heeled shoes.• Clean up all spills immediately. Block off a freshly washed floor.• Secure loose mats, rugs and carpets. Use slip-resistant tiles and floor coverings.• Use rubber mat or nonskid accessories on the floor of the tub or shower.• Keep cables and wiring out of traffic areas. On Stairs and StepsFalls from stairs and steps can cause serious injury and even death. To prevent these incidents, take these precautions:• Always keep stairs and steps free of clutter.• Locate light switches at both ends of the stairway and turn the switch on before using the stairs.• Hold onto handrails when going up or down the stairs.• Avoid placing rugs on the staircase• Block access to the stairs at both ends with safety gates if you have small children in the houseFrom a Ladder and StepladderLadders can be invaluable for reaching high places. Unsafe ladder use, however, accounts for many injuries. Here are some safety suggestions to help prevent ladder incidents.• Use the right kind and size of ladder for the work you want to do.• Inspect the ladder to ensure that it’s in good condition. Make sure that the spreaders can be locked in

place; the rungs and steps are intact; the rungs are clean and free of grease and oil; and all nuts, bolts and rivets are tightly in place. Do not use a ladder with broken parts or rust.

• See the ladder’s base solidly on level, stable ground and have someone hold the base.

• Follow the 4-to-1 rule when positioning a straight ladder: set the ladder’s base 0.3 meters (1 foot) away from the wall or other support for every 1.21 meters (4 feet) of ladder height.

• Face the ladder when climbing and stay in the centre of the rails

• Maintain three points of contact at all times (i.e; two feet and one hand or two hands and one foot)

• Don’t step on the top three rungs.Remember to always pay attention to where you are stepping

T r a n s C a n a d a Corp., four large pipeline unions, and the Pipe Line Contractors Association of C a n a d a h a v e signed a

memorandum of understanding committed to the hiring of PLCAC and union members for work on the proposed Energy East Pipeline (OGJ Online, Aug. 24, 2015).The pipeline, after conversion of the Canadian Mainline natural gas system and new construction, would carry 1.1 million b/d of crude oil from western Canada to refineries in eastern Canada and an export terminal in New Brunswick.TransCanada filed the initial application for the 4,500-km project with the National Energy Board in October 2014 and a consolidated version of the application last May. A federal decision is expected in about 2 years. The project faces opposition from environmentalists and some First Nation groups, especially in Ontario. First Nation opposition has stymied pipeline construction and expansion in western Canada.Unions signing the MOU are the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada, Laborers International Union of North America, International Union of Operating Engineers, and Teamsters International.A joint statement by the MOU signatories cited a Conference Board of Canada estimate that the Energy East project will create more than 14,000 direct and spin-off jobs/year in Canada during 9 years of development and construction and 3,300 direct and spin-off jobs/year during the first 20 years of operation.

Cameron LNG has received authorization from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export an additional 1.41 bcfd from its proposed Louisiana liquefaction expansion project to countries that do not have a free trade agreement with the US. Following approval, Cameron LNG›s export capacity will be 24.92 million tons/year, or 3.53 bcfd.Earlier this year, Cameron LNG received clearance from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to site, construct, and operate the proposed expansion project, which will include up to two additional liquefaction trains—trains No. 4 and No. 5—and a fifth full containment LNG storage tank.

The project will be next to the Cameron LNG terminal and liquefaction facilities that were approved for construction in 2014 in Hackberry, La.Construction on the first phase of the $10-billion Cameron LNG liquefaction project, encompassing trains No. 1-3, is under way. The facility is expected to commence operations during 2018, with the first full year of operations in 2019.Cameron LNG Holdings LLC is a joint venture owned by affiliates of Sempra Energy, Engie (formerly GDF Suez), Mitsui & Co. Ltd., and Japan LNG Investment LLC, itself a joint venture formed by affiliates of Mitsubishi Corp. and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha.

The US light, sweet crude oil price for the August contract settled at just under $46/bbl on the New York market July 15, rising modestly on better-than-expected Chinese economic statistics, which boosted expectations for China’s oil demand. But a rising US rig count helped cap the gains for July 15 oil prices.China’s National Bureau of Statistics said second-quarter gross domestic product grew 6.7% from a year earlier. The gain was higher than had been anticipated by economists who participated in a Wall Street Journal survey. Some analysts said that China’s oil demand is likely to hold up in coming months, noting the China’s oil production is declining with mature oil fields and budget cuts.Baker Hughes Inc. reported a US drilling rig count of 447 for the week ended July 15, up 7 units from the

previous week. Most of the increase came from rigs drilling for oil (OGJ Online, July 15, 2016).Justin Jenkins, analyst with Raymond James & Associates in Houston, said RJA remains bullish on oil prices and maintains its June forecast for the US benchmark crude price to average $80/bbl during 2017 even though many analysts suggest that a global crude glut has turned into a refined product glut.“The thinking goes that this glut will weigh on refining fundamentals, and therefore will reduce crude throughput (demand) at refineries, which will filter through to lower crude oil prices in a vicious cycle,” Jenkins said.US inventories of gasoline and diesel are significantly above historical averages (OGJ Online, June 13, 2016).“However, keep in mind that as demand has grown so should inventory levels,”

Jenkins said, adding that experience from previous years has shown that US product inventory surpluses can clear quickly. “We believe any impact of the product inventory overhang on the crude market will be short lived.”Energy pricesThe crude oil contract for August gained 27¢ to settle at $45.95/bbl on the New York Mercantile Exchange on July 15. The September contract gained 23¢ to close at $46.65/bbl.The natural gas contract for August was up a rounded 3¢ to a rounded $2.76/MMbtu. The Henry Hub gas price was $2.67/MMbtu, down 10¢ on July 15.Heating oil for August delivery declined nearly 1¢ to a rounded $1.40/gal. The price for reformulated gasoline stock for oxygenates blending for August edged up by less than a penny to a rounded $1.42/gal.The September Brent crude contract on London’s ICE rose 24¢ on July 15 to $47.61/bbl. The contract for October increased 19¢ to $48.12/bbl. The August gas oil contract settled at $413/tonne, up $1.The average price for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ basket of 12 benchmark crudes was $43.24 on July 15, up 36¢.

Kazakhstan’s state-owned KazMunaiGas (KMG), through a contractor, has let a contract to Ergil Group, Istanbul, to supply equipment for the second phase of the $2.9-billion revamp of its 5 million-tonne/year refinery Atyrau, Kazakhstan (OGJ Online, Jan. 7, 2015).Ergil will manufacture and supply shell and tube heat exchangers to be installed as part of the Atyrau refinery’s deep oil refining complex (DORC) project, the service provider said.Scope of delivery for the order will include a mix of 11 heat exchangers total comprised of the following types:•Diethanolamineregeneratorreboiler.• Methyldiethanolamine regeneratorreboiler.•Reboilersour-waterstripping.•Hydrogenationcooler.•Stripped-watertrimcooler.Ergil disclosed neither a value of the contract nor a timeframe for equipment delivery.

Atyrau overhaulInitiated in 2010, the Atyrau modernization and reconstruction comes as part of KMG’s program to boost Kazakhstan’s overall crude processing capacity.KMG commissioned Stage 1 of Atyrau’s overhaul, which involved construction of a complex for production of aromatic hydrocarbons, in December 2015, according to the company’s latest annual report.Designed to expand the refinery’s crude processing efficiency up to 5.5 million tpy as well as increase its ability to convert residual heavy oils into finished fuels that meet Euro 4 and 5-equivalent specifications, Stage 2’s deep oil conversion complex, or DORC, is scheduled for startup by yearend.Modernization and reconstruction projects under way at KMG’s 6 million-tpy Shymkent refinery and 6 million-tpy Pavlodar refining and petrochemical complex are due to be completed by yearend 2017, the company said.

A Chat with Steve BrownOperational Excellence Specialist

Bapco’s Steve Brown has recently lent a helping hand to support the needy. The Islander caught up with him for a quick chat…What inspired you to take up this community initiative?I first became aware of Helping Hands and the support they give to the men in the labour camps back in 2012 when Alan Goulden’s wife Kathy organised a clothes collection drive in Awali. Helping Hands are a group of Indian ladies who spend some of their free time trying to help the labourers have a better life here in Bahrain. They focus on individuals earning less than BD 60 per month! How did you get in touch with Helping Hands? When the Gouldens left Bahrain, I decided to continue Kathy’s good work and made contact with Helping Hands and organised two clothing collections for them from the Awali Community. Clothing, bedding and furniture flooded in - the Awali expats are so generous. Can you tell us about any such initiatives that you have been involved with in the past?In 2013-2014, I was Captain of the Awali Golf Club and my Captain’s Charity collection raised BD 600 which I donated to Helping Hands. The money purchased four refrigerators and two gas cooking stoves which have been supplied to labour camps to make the life of the men slightly more comfortable and safe. They now have chilled water, they can keep food fresh, and they have a reduced risk of fires. How have you been involved personally? Has anybody else contributed?Earlier this year, Helping Hands contacted me with an urgent request for clothes. One of the labour camps in Riffa had been destroyed by fire and the labourers had lost all of their possessions. I had eight bags of clothes which I immediately donated and I offered to get involved. I assisted Helping Hands in distributing bedding and basic foodstuffs to the 24 men involved. They were going to need to find new accommodation and they would need to provide all the major appliances, AC units, fridge/freezer, cooking stoves and equipment etc. So I decided to do some fundraising.I approached all the Bapco expatriates and in 2 days raised BD 935. Furthermore, the Awali Ladies Hospitality Group (ALHG) generously contributed a further BD 500. The Migrant Workers Protection Society and Helping Hands provided 6 new 1.5 ton ACs, plus cooking stoves, utensils, a fridge, and a freezer. My collection also paid for some appliances to be repaired and for the purchase of a second hand washing machine. With the leftover money I recently purchased BD 400 worth of food parcels to hand out to the labourers during Eid and the balance will be used to provide ACs (second hand),refrigerators, and gas cooking stoves etc. for the many labour camps around the island that are badly in need of these basic but essential items. I just feel like I’m giving something back to those less well-off in our community.

Murray, Serena Crowned Wimbledon Champions

Tournament hosts Spain celebrate after winning the 1964 European Nations’ Cup finals, beating defending champions Soviet Union 2-1 in the final. The final was contested at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.

Memorable Moments

The 31st Olympic and Paralympic games are scheduled to begin on Friday, 5 August 2016 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Over 10,000 athletes are expected to descend upon Rio to participate in the Games, which will include 306 events in 208 sports. The Olympic Games will be held from 5-21 August 2016, while the Paralympic games are scheduled from 7 to 18 September 2016.Watch this space next month for interesting coverage from Rio 2016…

The 2016 Wimbledon Championships came to an end on Sunday, 10 July 2016 with Britain’s Andy Murray and American Serena Williams being crowned the champions for 2016.Murray lifted his third grand slam title after ending Canadian Milos Raonic’s inspiring run at the Championships, which included a thrilling five-set triumph over Swiss legend Roger Federer in the semis. The score line after the final read 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 in Murray’s favour. On the day of the final, Raonic was unable to sustain the level that he had shown all summer, the 196cm tall Canadian consistently hammering serves at speeds of 240 km/h and playing a much-improved all-court game under the guidance of former great John McEnroe and Spanish Carlos Moya. The men’s doubles title was won by Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut after they beat compatriots Julien Benneteau and Eduard Roger-Vasselin in an all-French clash.

On the women’s side, Serena Williams finally got to Grand Slam No. 22 after beating German Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in a rematch of the Australian Open final in January, which Kerber won in three sets. It was a big relief for Williams after being ousted from the last three grand slams by three

different up-and-comers, most recently Spain’s world No. 3 Garbine Muguruza at Roland Garros. There was more delight for Serena at Wimbledon, as she paired up with sister Venus to beat Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova for the women’s doubles title.

Tourists India kicked off their four-test tour of the Caribbean with a thumping victory of an innings and 92 runs inside four days of play at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.Skipper Virat Kohli made a mockery of his poor record in the Caribbean posting a career-best 200 from 283 deliveries in front of the legendary Sir Richards himself, while Ravichandran Ashwin scored a commanding 113 of 253 deliveries with twelve boundaries.Ashwin’s hunger was clearly not satiated as the Chennai off-spinner tore through the West Indian line up in the second innings, to finish with figures of 7-83 and win the Man of the Match award for his thorough performance. West Indies were unable to avert an innings defeat, with only Marlon Samuels and Carlos Braithwaite offering some resistance with half-centuries to their credit. The second test match is poised to begin on Saturday, 30 July 2016 at Sabina Park in Jamaica.
