THE M A N A H A N FAMILY

(1750 — 1950)

Sketch by John Eacott Manahan, Radford, Virginia

Our coat of arms is a blue shield with a gold chevron between three gold stars. The crest is a man in full armor with left hand on the hip and holding in the right a silver forked pennon charged with a shield of the arms as above.

Our motto, FELIS DEMULCTA MITIS, means "The Stroked Cat is Meek."

Although our name, one of the oldest in Europe, dates from the year 866 A. D. when there flourished in Ireland a noted warrior named Manachan, the chieftains who bore his name on the banks of the Shannon—Ignatius, Muireadhach, Teige, Cathal, and Donn—proved no match for the mighty clan of the O'Beirnes, whose chief on June 6, 1249 killed O'Monahan with a blow of the fist. To O'Beirne we lost the Chieftainship of Hy-Briuin-na-Sionna and the Lordship of the Three Tuathas in the fateful year 1249, as recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters of Ireland, since which time, according to Rev. P. Woulfe of Dublin, our name has been scattered. The American Manahans have little from the past except the tradition that their forefathers were Orangemen in Erin, migrants to Canada, and in some way descended from personages prominent at the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, beheaded by her cousin Elizabeth of England. In the opinion of the present writer this legend comes from mixed sources. Probably the Monahans were Hibernian Catholics who were shipped for political reasons either to Virginia or Maryland and there they intermarried with the families of Crawford and Lescallete, one Scotch from whom the legend and the other French from whom the black eyes of the early Manahans in Maryland. The Crawfords figured largely in the annals of the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots, were Orangemen in Ireland where Alexander Crawford of Killybegs lived, and some of his descendants may have come by way of Canada. The Lescalletes may have been Irish Huguenots, or what is more likely, Acadian Catholics in the Baltimore Acadian Church following the uprooting in Nova Scotia of "Evangeline" and her race. Doubtless the Crawfords were descended from the Sandi-lands family in Chester County, Pennsylvania, one of whom bore the title, Viscount Canada. From conjecture as to origins, we come to solid fact as nearly as it can be arrived at:

THOMAS M A N A H A N of Baltimore County, Maryland (who may have been son of the James Monahan who in 1768 voted to move the county seat from Joppa to Baltimore Town) b. ca. 1750, d. 1787. The Journal of the Committee of Observation of the Middle District of Frederick County shows Thomas Manahan as an Associator and as a Corporal in Capt. Henry Baker's Company in the American Revolution, Sept. 12, 1775-Oct. 24, 1776. His creditors in 1787 included Jameis Crawford, Matthias Cralwford, John Crawford, Martin Winter, George Winter, Jacob Winter, and Michael Heans. Joshua Howard and Conrad Dudderer appraised his estate, which was administered by his widow, Margaret Manahan. Listed as his next of kin were Sarah Manahan and Mary Manahan. His name appears as witness to the marriage of Jacob Loewele to Salome Pitersen on August 13 ( ) in the records of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick City. Lived at "The Barrens," near Libertytown.

m. Margaret, possibly sister of James, Jonas, Matthias, and John Crawford. As Margaret Manaham she was living in 1790 at the Census in Lower Delaware Hundred, Baltimore County, where her sons later list themselves as having been born. In 1790 Margaret appears with a family of 1 male over 16, 3 males under 16, and 3 females including herself. Alexander Crawford of Montgomery County and Prince-George's Maryland may have been her father.

LETTER OF AUGUSTUS C. M A N A H A N FROM FREDERICKSBURG, V A .

Camp Near Falmouth December 19, 1862

Dear Father: 'It is with pleasure I take my pencil in hand to inform you

that I am yet alive, and I hope when these few imperfect lines reach you they will find you all alive and well I suppose you have been very uneasy about me since the battle of Fredericksburg. We went across the river on Saturday morning. We got into the fight about four o'clock in the evening: about sunset we made a charge against the rebel works, but we were driven back with a great loss. We lost about one hundred men out of our Regiment. Thank God I came out safe. On Monday night and Tuesday morning we held the most dangerous position that was held during the fight. We were the last Regiment to cross the River coming back. Such sights as I saw there I never want to see again, and I hope to God I never shall. I can give you no idea, the mourning of the wounded and the groans of the dying was awful. The man to my left was shot dead, Simon P. Rouzer, and the one to my right was wounded in the hand, Daniel Wolfe. There was only two killed in our Company and four wounded; but the dead and wounded lay thick over the field.

Well, I must bring my letter to a close. You must excuse me for not writing sooner, I have not been very well ever since I crossed the river, or I would have written sooner. I hope you will answer this soon as it comes to hand, for I am very anxious to hear from you all, nothing does me more good than to hear from home. I wish this war was over. Well I hope we may all meet again in this life, if we do not meet in this world I hope we may all be happy as to meet in Heaven. Give my love to all inquiring friends. No more at present but remain your affectionate son.

Augustus

Good-bye dear father, mother, brother, and sister, to one and all farewell. Do not forget to answer this.

Note: On December 21, 1862, two days after writing this letter Augustus Manahan was killed by foul play on the part of his fellows. The original of this letter is owned by Walker Garfield Manahan of Gettysburg, Penn. and was copied for this sketch by Marian Manahan of Littlestown, Penn.

Al l persons to whom a copy of this sketch comes can be of great help to the author by sending to him family records to make the above more complete and fi l l in the gaps. If there is a gratifying response a complete book on the family may follow. Merely write John E. Manahan, Radford, Virginia, professor of history and political science in Radford College. He wishes particularly to thank for help Mr. and Mrs. George W. Manahan, Miss Adelia Manahan, Francis McClellan Manahan, Marian Manahan, Clarence Manahan, and Harry Warren of Sabillasville, relative on the Tresler side, and Mrs. Si Mange, Hanover, Penn.

Since this book went to press the Author has obtained five deeds dating from 1736 to 1748 of the Sandelands family of Chester Co., Penn. It appears that Jonas Sandelands, Gent., died before 1734 leaving a widow, two sons and six daughters: James (died ante 1748, no c ) , David (of the island of Tinnicum, Anne (m. Richard Venables Ante 1744), Mary (m. James Claxton ante 1737), Sarah, Rebecca (widow of Henry Maddock by 1740), Eleanor, and Margarett (youngest child d. without lawful issue ante 1748). Eleanor m. George Polley.

From the striking similarity of Christian names the Manahans and Sandelands would appear to be allied. There were a number of early Manahans in Chester Co., Penn. and across Mason-Dixon line in Harford Co., Md. Arthur and Barnard Manahan were living in Harford Co., Md. at the 1790 census. In 1800 Mary, daughter of James and Margaret Manahan was baptized at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Baltimore. The "Barrens" near Libertytown were owned by Francis Clarvon, Capt. Ninian Beall, George French, Mr. Tasker, Daniel Dulany, and after 1746 by Jacob Stoner. It then included only 103 acres.

The only Manahan immigrant to America so far located by the Author is William Manahan, imported to Rappahannock River in Virginia by James Yates in 1654. He may well have been father of John Minnahane in the Md. Census of 1678.
