THE IVY Official Newsletter of Sigma Omega Chapter

It’s time to spring into March and this month’s theme is “Getting our House in Order”, our chapters’ version of spring cleaning.

Our Strategic Planning and Standards committees are diligently working to create a long-term vision for our chapter. Our community and world are changing. We must work to ensure that our operations and goals are moving us forward into a brighter future. We are completing our internal audit in conjunction with preparing for our chapter audit. We look forward to receiving a clean bill of operational health.

Basileus Speaks

I want to recognize our Sisterly Relations committee for hosting the dinner and a movie activity. I enjoyed learning about one of our greats, Jesse Owens. I also want to extend a special thank you to our Founders’ Day chairmen and everyone who came out to our Founders’ Day celebration. I know that I had a great time. Soror Marshall’s words truly inspired me and I am excited to see us keep up the great work as we move forward this year. As we bid farewell to another Black History Month, it is important to remember that our history is to be celebrated year round. Our sorority is built on the shoulders of women who have made our world a better place and we will continue to do the necessary work to continue our legacy.

Sigma Omega is getting bigger and better. If we work together, our potential is limitless, but, only by working as a unit can we succeed. I thank everyone for their continued contribution and eagerly await to see what will happen next. Let us be great.

Sisterly love,

Soror Whitney B Gaskins Basileus

March brings positive changes in weather and hopefully signs of spring. We can eventually shed coats, hats, scarves and all other winter gear and to prepare for spring. As we do, please remember to bring spring seasonal wraps, i.e. ponchos, umbrellas, raincoats, light sweaters and sunscreen products to the March chapter meeting.

If you are unable to attend the conference, please bring your school supplies and book bags to chapter meeting or my home, 2505 Twigwood Lane Cincinnati OH 45237-2215.

March 15, 2016 is Ohio Primary Election Day

Voting Tips for the Primary Election:

On March 15, registered voters will be asked to declare their party affiliation in order to receive a ballot. A voter has the option of switching party affiliation by kindly asking a poll worker about this option or you may vote only on issues if there are issues on the ballot in your area.

The Secretary of State in Ohio has added a feature to the various County Board of Elections’ websites that allow you to now obtain your voting place as well as a copy of the ballot you will be voting on. Go to the website and obtain that information before you go to the polls. You can actually select your candidates before you vote and use that as an aid to assist you in the voting booth.

We have noticed a number of Offices on the Ohio ballot has write in Candidates. This is important because the poll workers are limited in the information and assistance they can provide. Make sure you know who the write-in candidate is and carefully write in their name and darken the box next to the name to make sure your vote counts. Ask your election officials to see the names.

Because of all the resources available to you please complete your entire ballot, local elections are equally as important as the Presidential election. Additionally, we have Sorors on the ballot who could use your support if they are in your voting precinct. Most appear as the last Candidates on the ballot.

Remember that 17 year olds can vote if their birthday is on or before the Nov 8th election. If they missed the first registration deadline don’t panic, get them registered before the general election. Connection Committee members will be glad to assist you.

Also if you can vote early, the dates and times in Ohio are the same throughout the state go on line or call your local Board of Elections for details.
